Developing Confidence

Greg Keane Author Interview

Big Mick and Little Pete take readers on a heartwarming and daring rescue adventure, proving that the power of teamwork, bravery, and determination can turn even the unlikeliest heroes into life-saving champions. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

Big Mick and Little Pete were born out of necessity; when my son first started to read, after we had finished a book, if he were still awake, he would ask me to tell him a story. There were many characters over the years; however, the one that resonated the most was Big Mick and Little Pete. I wanted to have this story recorded so he might like to read it to his children one day.

The illustrations in the book are fantastic. What was the art collaboration process like with illustrator Amena Jannat?

It was a little difficult as Amena was in another country, so time differences were the main obstacle.

Big Mick and Little Pete highlights values like teamwork, perseverance, and bravery; how do you believe parents and educators can utilize your book as a tool to instill these values in children?

I would love to think Parents/Guardians/Educators would be able to articulate the message to children. Confidence is important for development, and it would be great if they could take that away.

What is the next book that you are working on, and when will it be available?

Yes, Big Mick and Little Pete have a lot of Adventures coming early in 2024.

Big Mick is a Dump Truck and Little Pete is a mini excavator
, Every day they work side by side building projects for their town, But today would be different, Today a School Bus has been trapped on the other side of the Town and the kids can’t get home. The call has gone out and Big Mick and Little Pete are the only ones who can reach the School Bus. Can Big Mick and Little Pete fix the road? Follow along as we watch these two friends save the day.

Instinct to Nurture Wild Animals

R.G. de Rouen Author Interview

Mother to Elephants follows the life of Daphne Sheldrick and her journey from caring for orphaned animals to rescuing elephants and becoming a conservationist. What inspired you about her life that made you want to tell her story?

My wife and I spent many weekends on safari and could not get enough of the Kenyan wildlife – especially the elephants. I guess it was meant to be that I heard about the elephant orphanage and decided to check it out. Little did I know that my visit to the Sheldrick orphanage would start the seeds for this book project and a book launch many years later! Through the years, I participated in the adoption program, the organization, and still receive regular updates (field notes) about a particular elephant’s progress. I learned that this instinct to nurture wild animals started at a young age for Daphne through her various books and film footage. Although there is a lot of coverage and material for adults, I couldn’t find anything for kids to read, and I felt that the younger generations should also have a chance to learn about the work of this remarkable lady. In addition, the determination Daphne showed in facing some setbacks was inspirational to me. Daphne was the first to develop a formula suitable for milk dependent elephants. Sadly, before Daphne’s discovery, unfortunately many of the youngest orphaned elephants didn’t make it.

The art in this book is fantastic. What was the art collaboration process like with illustrator Kateryna Rohotova?

I was lucky to find an illustrator such as Kateryna. In my search, I was primarily looking for 2 things: An artist who is familiar with painting elephants and uses colors that suit the Savannah landscape of Africa. Kateryna’s work stood out right away to me, and when I learned that she was also a great animal lover, I knew this would be a good fit. As this was to be a biography picture book, it was important that the scenes be authentic. Kateryna researched her drawings so that even the plants and smallest creatures were native to Kenya where the story takes place. The process with Kateryna went very smoothly. She would first make a sketch based on my description of the scene, before painting in watercolor by hand, and finally scanning and retouching the scene.

What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?

The main ideas I wanted readers to come away with is through love and determination, many things are possible. Daphne grew up in Africa, not only surrounded by wild things at an early age, but she was given the task by her parents to also care for them. Little did she know then that this would eventually lead to her adult mission in life in rescuing and rehabilitating orphans. I took the word her dad told her that ”If you truly love a wild animal in your care, you must one day set it free when nature calls,” to frame the book. Daphne takes this to heart upon founding her elephant orphanage with the goal of returning these same elephants to the wild. The idea that these marvelous, intelligent animals were born free and should one day be able to live freely in the wild again is another major idea I hope readers take away from the book.

Are you working on other biographies to share with children? Will this be the start of a series?

Thanks for this question. Yes, I have another book started about a young hero who discovered trash in the ocean and is now doing something about it. It was actually kids who brought this issue to my attention during my teaching awhile back. Before that, I am sad to say, I wasn’t aware of areas such as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. I love it when I, as a teacher, learn through my students. In fact, I have thought about the possibility of having a series about kids who, early on, show that they care for the environment enough to do something about it.

Born free – living free! How young, orphaned elephants found a playful temporary home with a different kind of family. A true story filled with love and determination.

No doubt you’ve heard the saying, “Mother knows best!” But what if the baby is a six-hundred-pound elephant, and the mother is of the two-legged kind? Would the saying still hold true?

Mothering elephants is what Daphne Sheldrick did her entire life. As a young girl, she was put in charge of wounded or abandoned animals. As a grownup, Daphne and her dedicated team saved and nurtured countless elephants.

When a tiny, milk-dependent calf arrived, Daphne’s determination would be tested. No one had ever hand-reared an elephant baby this young, but what Daphne learned with Aisha would be the key to saving future orphaned elephants. What’s more, she had an elephant-sized dream of returning them to the wild!

You Are…Volume One

In You Are…Volume One, Lauren Brownrigg embarks on a beautiful journey, artistically intertwining gentle illustrations and melodious rhymes to convey integral messages of love, self-worth, kindness, and remembrance to readers. The book tenderly starts its thematic exploration by delineating that love transcends mere emotion; it encapsulates the very essence of protective, caring, and unconditional gestures, affirming that to bestow love upon another is a treasured gift.

Brownrigg elegantly threads other themes in a harmonious fashion, each illustrated and described with equal tenderness and depth. Notably, the inclusion of journal pages provides a space where readers—whether they be children or adults—can write down their cherished memories and reflections pertinent to each theme. The delicate watercolor illustrations of animal mothers and their offspring illuminate the initial themes, while the theme of remembrance is poignantly symbolized by a solitary, ethereal butterfly.

A boundary-blurring narrative, You Are…Volume One serves as a heartfelt tapestry, equally captivating for both children and adults. The illustrations and poetic eloquence unravel each subject in a manner that is both comprehensible and relatable to children, while the journal sections offer a canvas for introspection. The dialogic nature of the narrative—emulating a parent speaking to their child—is particularly enchanting. A striking example from the book encapsulates this: “My love will remain as sure as the setting sun, And I will remind you each time the day is done…”

The illustrations are executed with a sublime and gentle sophistication, both interesting and uncomplicated, while the small poems punctuate the book with well-crafted and emotive prose. Brownrigg has cultivated a nurturing ground to foster emotional intelligence and confidence within young minds. It presents numerous avenues for parents and guardians to embolden and convey their love and care.

You Are…Volume One unfurls as a uniquely crafted and heartwarmingly resonant book. This comes as a heartfelt recommendation to any parent or guardian who wants to embark upon a literary journey that is as emotive as it is insightful, gently steering through the essential teachings of love, kindness, and memory.

There is Beauty in Being Different

Lisa Jacovsky Author Interview

Purrrfect As I Am is the heartwarming tale of three kittens, all with special needs, who prove that there is indeed beauty in being different. Why was this an important book for you to write?

Working in the field with children that are special needs has created a view into this beautiful world that most people don’t try to see. Along with this I am very passionate about animals. Having a different view has enabled me to see things in animals too most people don’t see or even know about. I had landed on different foster organizations for cats with special needs. I have been following these amazing organizations for a few years and that is really what the inspiration was. I realized that there are barely any books about animals with special needs. And there are people that when I would show them the pictures would think they are not cute or adorable like I do but once I explained their story they had a totally different view. Following these fosters showed me the beauty in these special animals. I wanted to share that with the world so that maybe someone out there would not give the animal back but would seek out help. Or that someone would be open to adopting one of these amazing animals. Its about showing the world the beauty in being different, not just for humans, but animals too.

What kind of research was required to make sure you portrayed the kittens’ special needs accurately?

I follow three different amazing foster organizations for special needs cats specifically. What I did was go through their pictures and posts again to ensure I had the correct information for the disorders. Also, for the behaviors the cats could be seen engaging in. Then I found online through searching some pictures that I wanted to use for my characters. I also used an amazing company named Brainstorm Productions to do the illustrations. For the style I asked one specific individual if she would do all twelve for me. I used the first book in Cat Brothers series, Rascal Cat Brothers, to decide on a specific style. With characters that need to be specific and wanting them to be cute and adorable, I took my time in deciding on a style. I got very lucky in that she agreed to do the illustrations for the whole book.

What is one thing you hope young readers take away from Purrrfect As I Am?

Even though an animal is different looking, they can still be silly and funny and adorable lap cats if that is what the family Is looking for. Look beyond the differences on the outside and adopt the cat anyways. They can be just as amazing friends and companions as any other. However, if the cost is too much, to please find a suitable foster organization; please do not surrender them to a shelter they cannot help. Be kind to these beautiful creatures.

What is the next book you are working on, and when will it be available?

The next book I am working on is actually a spin off Purrrfect As I am. The three characters are going to use their specialness to solve cute mysteries. The first book is going to be available sometime in 2024. It will have the same illustrator as well.

Its never a dull day when there are three kittens with special needs in the house! Narrated by an adorable kitten with Hydrocephalus, this is the story of three kittens with special needs that do not slow them down at all. Bones loves to cuddle and chase the little red dot with his friend Bender who has three legs. Bender also loves to play and try to catch the spinning mouse. Then there’s Beau who happens to be blind. This doesn’t stop him from jumping to the highest point on the cat tree or chasing after the crinkle ball though. A fun, sweet story of three friends who show the beauty of being different and the love that a human can bring to special needs to cats.

To Be Loved Unconditionally

Author Interview
Sarah M Thomas Mariano Author Interview

I Will Love You Forever and Always helps children work through the complicated emotions they feel when they are struggling with meeting their parents’ expectations. What was the inspiration for your story?

The source of inspiration for this book is two-fold, the first being the children and families I have worked with in outpatient therapy, and the second being my own children. As a clinical social worker and outpatient therapist, I have been allowed to share in some of the most vulnerable emotional experiences that my clients have walked through. Over the course of my career, children have worked to process insecurities about knowing their place in their family dynamic, understanding parent-child love, and understanding that love does not change even in periods of difficulty or difference.

Children tend to be very concrete thinkers and can easily draw assumptions that parents do not intend or are not even aware of, leading to these insecurities in the parent-child relationship. Parents can also struggle with such insecurities, being unsure of whether they express love enough, if they know how to connect with their child in a meaningful way, or if they themselves are good enough. Being in a position to observe and share in these emotional processes with parents and children, I wanted to create a tool to allow children to feel normalized in their experiences, allow parents to hear some of the common insecurities children express and allow parents to reinforce for their children that their love is constant and unconditional.

I initially created a sort of poem that we would read and discuss in sessions, which worked its way into the initial draft of this book (a smaller, informal version that I primarily used with families in sessions), and ultimately, this published version. My intention in creating this book was to give parents a platform to process unconditional love with their children and reinforce that concept, to ultimately give their children a sense of security in knowing that love is unconditional. This book can be used in both the therapeutic setting and in the family setting, and although it is an enjoyable story, my hope is that it would act as a powerful tool in helping facilitate increased security in the parent-child relationship.

Regarding my own children, they were just babies at the time this book was published. Although the content is largely based on conversations and concepts that would need to be discussed and reinforced as my children grow, my mama heart knows that these are conversations I will have with them as they get older. I want them to always know how deeply and unconditionally they are loved, even when we have differences or difficulty, in the ways our individual traits are similar and different, through boogers, stinky feet, bad grades, meltdowns, messy rooms and all.

The art in this book is fantastic. What was the art collaboration process like with illustrator Sarah Gledhill?

Working with the illustrator, Sarah Gledhill, was a very enjoyable experience. I like to draw, and considered illustrating my book, but wanted the illustrations to be more professional and complete. My publisher, Atmosphere Press, had an established relationship with Sarah Gledhill and had worked with her on previous projects, so they facilitated the connection. Sarah’s first sample drawing was of the elephants on the first page of the book. I fell in love with the drawing immediately and felt it captured the message of the page it was drawn for. Sarah and I never met in person and collaborated fully by phone and video. She was easy to work with and was able to portray the message of the book well with her vibrant, energetic and emotion-filled drawings, bringing life to each page. Seeing my words interpreted in her illustrations certainly made the book come to life and was a very exciting part of the process. Many parents have shared with me that their children have nicknamed this book “The Stinky Feet Book” and love the skunk family illustration, stinky feet and boogers included. I so appreciate collaborating with an illustrator who has been able to help connect children to the larger message of the book through her captivating drawings.

What were some educational aspects that were important for you to include in this children’s book?

My hope is that parents would read this book to their children (rather than children reading the book independently) or that therapists would integrate this book into family therapy sessions when working on strengthening the parent-child bond. This overall work in strengthening family connection and understanding the wants, needs and perspectives of other family members involves both psychoeducational and therapeutic components.

The purpose of this book is to help children learn what it means to be loved unconditionally, and for parents to be given child-friendly words and language to facilitate these conversations with their children. The ultimate goal, if this book is used as a tool in the larger process, is that the parent-child emotional connection would be strengthened.

The book includes an activity page at the end, with the question, “What does forever and always love mean to me?” This prompt is intended to emphasize the points presented in the book and ensure the child understands the concepts presented. It is an opportunity for parents to connect the concepts presented in the book to their own circumstances and scenarios at home, and extend the conversation with their children beyond the story into an opportunity for further learning, discussion, connection and strengthening of the parent-child relationship.

In the words of the book’s preface, “Parents know the love they hold for their children never changes, even on days that are tough, days that are smelly and oh-so-yucky, days when nothing seems to go right, days of noticing we don’t look the same or days of noticing we like different things. However, children often need reassurance, reminder and repetition that they are loved unconditionally in such days and such moments…Children can never be told too often they are loved, and sometimes in life’s unpredictable moments, is when they need the reassurance of your unconditional love most.”

Is this the first book in the series? If so, when is the next book coming out, and what can your fans expect in the next story?

My primary profession and career identity is in being a clinical social worker, so the idea of having a series or further books is a concept I am working to integrate into my profession. I wrote a rough draft of a children’s book on grief and have thoughts to complete future similar children’s stories on subjects related to transition, adjustment, coping and navigating life events. My focus is in creating future children’s books that would be used in the therapeutic setting as well as the family setting. Being in a position to walk children through difficult life events or transitions, and simultaneously give parents child-friendly words or language to have difficult or complex conversations with their children, is something I would consider a privilege to pursue in future published works.

This book is a great tool to help families communicate about unconditional love. Unconditional love is something that should be taught and shared with children at a young age.
