I Love Mysteries

Deborah Hunt Author Interview

Detective Natty and Doggy Dale Follow the Clues is a collection of engaging mysteries for children featuring Natty and her invisible friend Doggy Dale. What was the inspiration behind this children’s book?

My inspiration for writing this mystery book series was my love of mysteries. I have always loved reading mysteries from Nancy Drew to Agatha Christie and enjoyed reading mystery books with my kids. These books included Cam Jansen, Encyclopedia Brown, and The Baby-Sitters Club. Scooby-Doo has always been a favorite of mine and makes an appearance in one of the mini mystery books. As I worked through the various iterations of the book the idea of a ghost dog and how he helped Detective Natty’s famous great-grandparents solve mysteries.

What is your background and experience in writing, and how did it help you write Detective Natty and Doggy Dale Follow the Clues?

I have always loved reading and writing and have been writing for most of my life. Throughout the years I have taken many writing courses and belong to several writing groups to continue to develop my skills as a writer. I have published several award-winning children’s books in addition to four nursing books.

The art in this book really meshes well with the storyline and adds to each mystery. What was the art collaboration process like with the illustrator?

Ashleigh Heyns (illustrator) is a talented and creative illustrator. We collaborated on one of my picture books No Dinosaurs Allowed and she was a delight to work with. The illustration process for Detective Natty and Doggy Dale Follow the Clues was a collaborative effort between Ashleigh, Callie (Editor and Publisher from Clear Fork Press) and me. I shared my vision for the book and then Ashleigh did her magic and we all reviewed and agreed upon the illustrations. I am blessed to be a part of this “Dream Team” and look forward to creating the future books in this fun new mystery series.

Can you give readers a hint as to what Natty and Doggy Dale will be up to in book two of the series?

I am excited to share some hints about the next book in the series. Readers will also find some clues
about the next book at the back of the current book.

Book two takes place at the amusement park and will include the main characters and a cast of diverse supporting characters. Detective Natty and Doggy Dale will be on the case as they follow the clues to help their friends find their missing items.

Siblings Learning Together

Lisa Jacovsky Author Interview

The Rascal Cat Brothers follows a black cat who, up until now, was a solitary cat, and now has a kitten moving into his home and has to adapt. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

The story is the true events of adopting my two cats. The black cat, Midnight is actually my first cat I adopted from a shelter. The second cat, Snowball, is actually my silly younger cat, and this is the story of the day I brought him home. Ever since, the two boys have been amazing brothers, and Snowball has been super silly. I was inspired to write their story and their amazingly funny behaviors into a book series. They are my first pets, and I had no idea how silly and funny they could be. I thought their behaviors could be a great book, and what came out also came with a beautiful message.

Getting a new sibling can be challenging and confusing for children, as can bringing a new animal into the home with existing ones. Both situations can be the scene for humorous moments. What was your favorite scene in this story?

My favorite scene in the story is definitely when I find Snowball on the top shelf in my closet. That is a true event, and the illustrations in the books are my actual pictures. I just heard something in the closet one day and walked in to see this tiny 8.5 pound kitten on the top shelf of my closet. Midnight, of course, came to check it, too, but I was surprised and could not stop laughing. I think that is one of my favorite memories of Snowball. A favorite memory of both boys is definitely anytime they are cuddled up with me sleeping. I love when they cuddle with me and together. Snowball is bigger than Midnight in real life, and it is so cute and funny when he lays down on top of his brother rather than next to him.

What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?

I really did not set out to explore themes. I wanted to write down the silly and adorable things I have seen my two cats do. I thought starting with how I brought him home and the silly things Snowball did along with the cuddles that Midnight loves would be perfect. I did not know then I would make it into a series. I thought the way I wrote it could be either a series or a stand-alone book. It just morphed into this adorable funny story of siblings learning together and becoming family. I am very lucky to have it unfold that way.

What is the next book you are working on, and when will it be available?

I am working on the next book in the Lets Talk! series called Lets Talk! Celebrating the Holidays. It is available November 1, 2023. The second book in the cat brothers series is going to come out sometime in 2024. Stay tuned for updates because that one is Snowball’s point of view.

Sometimes we all have to make room for new additions to our family. It can be hard but it also can be fun. That is exactly what happened to Midnight one day when his mommy brought home a new little brother named Snowball to be his best friend. Little did he know how silly and fun this new little brother can be. This story follows the silly shenanigans of two cats who are learning to get along and become family.

Chato, the Puppy-Cat follows a homeless puppy who is adopted by a loving woman who thinks he is a cat, and he is afraid to show her he is a dog. What was the inspiration for your story?

The story presented itself in my head one day, as if it wanted to be told. It wasn’t until later that I realized it came from childhood experiences, and from watching both children and adults around me having to conform and behave in ways that went against their grain.

Chato struggles with wanting to belong and with showing his true self out of fear of being accepted. Was there anything from your own life that you put into this emotional story?

I was born with a vision disability which affects various aspects of my life, and I often had to conform to fit in and not inconvenience others. I had a lot of trouble in school because I couldn’t see the board or read small print. The bright lights indoors and sunlight outdoors blinded me so recess and gym class were torture.

Also, I can’t see color. I debated about doing the illustrations as pencil sketches or ask someone to help me with the colors. I was told that black and white would limit the commercial appeal of the book, but I had to think of my brave main character, Chato. What would he do? And I knew I had to stay true to myself.

What were some educational aspects that were important for you to include in this children’s book?

Going back to the previous questions, I think it is good for kids to see that they are not alone if they feel different. Also, it might be educational for them to learn about how someone can still think the world is a beautiful place without color vision.

As a language teacher, however, I love rhythm and rhyme and I believe it can help kids (and adults) learn and remember things. It helps them learn how words with the same sounds can have different spellings, and can also engage them while being read to; predicting the next words based on their sounds. The fact that the book is bilingual English/Spanish makes it great for bilingual families or for children learning one language or the other.

What is the next book you are working on, and when will it be available?

I have just finished a collection of short stories for adults and a few more picture books, one of which helps kids learn to tell time. I hope they will be available soon!

TIP’S Magical Journey: The Ride of Discovery and Inspiration follows a young boy traveling on a train who meets people from all over the world and learns about their homelands. What was the inspiration for your story?

The inspiration for the story was from my father. He was a pharmacist in Center City Philadelphia in the 50s. On the weekends, I would get into bed with my parents, and he would tell me about Little Audrey – a girl without a home he engaged on the train.

I loved the Little Audrey stories and was actually jealous that she engaged with my Dad more than me. It was a true bonding with a working father. When I became a grandmother and had my first grandson, I switched Little Audrey to a boy. Years and years went by, and my grandson kept telling me he remembered those stories on a train, and I should write a book. My father was my first inspiration and grandson David was my second. I took my business, The Inspiration Project, and used the first letters of each word to form TIP.

Nine years ago, I started the not-for-profit, The Inspiration Project, where now 260,000 read my inspirations and over 110,000 follow me each day. I am the founder of this amazing company where I sent over 15,000 frames embedded with my inspirations to 12 charities – and I had at least 10 volunteers help me. The pandemic happened, and I was forced to switch gears. I have not taken any salary, and none of my volunteers did. I was privileged to be written up in the Philadelphia Inquirer and in the Jewish Exponent as a senior making a difference in Pennsylvania.

The artwork really stands out and allows the reader to immersed in the storyline, providing opportunities to enhance discussions with children. What was the collaboration process like with illustrator Jason Shiver?

The collaboration between Jason Shiver and me was wonderful. While my editor told me about Jason, I knew he would surround my dialogue with great pictures. And he delivered! We had a give-and-take with what Tip would look like; it was a joyful collaboration that I will cherish. I had an ongoing conversation with Jason with the pictures every couple of weeks – and I was blown away with his professionalism and his artistic skills. I hope Jason will agree to do my future books. He is a gem.

What were some educational aspects that were important for you to include in this children’s book?

The educational aspects were many. First, I wanted a “clean” look to the book – no distractions – simple dialogue and equally simple pictures, but it had to be equally “friendly” to children who could not read yet. I was hoping the pictures would be important until a parent could read to the child and then the child could read the book themselves. It was important for me to talk about countries that people came from and get a sense of their mores and customs. It was important to talk about the food – which most children would recognize very freely as most go to restaurants. I researched a lot of the geographic aspects as I wanted children who may not travel to get a sense of other countries. I truly wanted the “sunshine of life” to tell children what other people are like, that to open our world to diversity and love would not make it scary and more friendly. I hoped that children reading this book would hold it close to them forever – and perhaps they could discover a world more open to them.

Is this the first book in the series? If so, when is the next book coming out, and what can your fans expect in the next story?

Yes, it will be a series. The next book is going to my editor soon – It is Tip’s Birthday Bash, A Celebration of Friendship.

Tip is now 10 years old – his parents throw him his first party. His friends from the neighborhood are invited – it is a diverse neighborhood. The friends each bring a gift that is important to Tip as it is all about them as individuals. There is a dog mascot and at the end of the book, I tell what each of these children, through inspiration, become in their lifetime. However, a final aspect of the book is that Tip and his friends decide on a summer volunteer project which they all partake. There are the kids we hope are growing up now in our society – they bring love, friendship, and diversity to the lives of many. Many are foreigners where their parents are on visas and they live in Tip’s community. They will provide children to be open with others, provide a community volunteer program and continue on with inspiration for children’s lives.

TIP’s Magical Journey, The Ride of Discovery and Inspiration was written to speak to the celebration of human diversity. The illustrations by an artist/sculptor capture the details that bring the story to life. The book was designed to create and develop conversations between parents and their children to help prepare them for the challenges of life. Each conversation sets forth wonderful advice to TIP. Parent(s) can ask their child what they see in the picture full of detail. The illustrations in the book provide many talking points.

The main character is Thaddeus Isaac Pendleton, but because that is a mouthful, he is called Tip. Tip, an 8 1/2 year old boy, rides a commuter train each day. He meets up with immigrants, travelers and learns much about them. Some are carrying tote bags with their homeland delicacies. The book celebrates the diversity, customs, and morals of those he meets. Just what America needs now. Tip’s journey is filled with youthful buoyancy and innocence. It has thoughtful lessons. There are 23 special illustrations in the 60-page book. The book also gives the reader the chance to find some of the many objects on the train. The story speaks of the importance of learning about the world you and paying attention to detail.
