Digital Medical Home: The Telemedicine Revolution Ignited the Creation of Precision Health examines the progression of telemedicine and how it has impacted the quality of health care as well as the future possibilities for patient care. Why was this an important book for you to write?
Telemedicine took a very long time from its inception to becoming mainstream. The journey was filled with challenges and surprises that would entertain many readers, teach entrepreneurs, and educate the reader. Dr Sanders, the Father of Telemedicine, is now 86, and we wanted to record his story while he was young and sharp enough to relay it in a meaningful way.
This is such a fast-changing field, both from the medical side and the technology side. How much research did you undertake for this book, and how much time did it take to put it all together?
The book took three months to write. It is intentionally short because we wanted to hold the reader’s attention in a concise document. Dr. Sanders and I (Michael Gorton) lived the history, so research was more about pulling old notes, emails, and documents.
Did you find anything in your research of this book that surprised you?
Again, we lived the history, so the main surprise is just how little people are aware of the history. Interestingly, acceptance of telemedicine has grown exponentially, as shown by an ATA study two years ago. See graph:

What is one thing that you hope readers take away from Digital Medical Home?
The story and history are great, but mostly, we wanted to entertain and educate.
This book shares the many tales that led to the Telemedicine revolution and brought us to where we are today. Now, with the Digital Medical Home, technology will deliver care, labs and sometimes treatment to wherever the patient is, not where the doctor is. This new platform will continuously monitor data, and catch things before they become dangerous and expensive. Find out how technology can create patient empowerment and enhanced personalization of health care.

Fifty Shades of Gray Matter
Posted by Literary Titan

Imagine if Dr. Derek Shepherd and Dr. Gregory House had a baby. Dr. Teresella Gondolo would be the result. In her hallowed space, tales of perplexing symptoms and peculiar behaviors unfold like the pages of an intricate novel, chronicling days, months, and years of daunting medical mysteries. She welcomes the unusual like House and handles each case with the expertise of Shepherd. In a mesmerizing dance between patients and their families, an unassuming office becomes a sanctuary for the extraordinary.
She narrates stories of patients who visit her office with worry lines etched on their faces and sadness in their eyes. A virtuoso of the medical realm, Dr. Gondolo is audience to a wide range of human conditions. She bravely encounters a number of neurological conditions and allows the reader into her office as she treats each one of them.
Dr. Gondolo tells her stories with the flair of a pen-driven Picasso. Her passion for her work is obvious in her writing. Bound within the pages of Fifty Shades of Gray Matter are segments each different from the other. These sections give voice to narratives that resonate with strength and simplicity, occasionally revealing the tender hues of her own life’s canvas. She is not afraid to let a little bit of herself peer through the lines.
This book is the perfect treat for lovers of medical shows. It is the literary equivalent of Grey’s Anatomy woven with House MD episodes. Like a medical MacGyver, she accurately highlights the urgency of her cases and the technical artistry it takes to diagnose and treat before the patient runs out of time or deteriorates beyond the point of no return. Fifty Shades of Gray Matter is much more than an interesting read–it is an experience. Dr. Gondolo’s grasp of imagery and the writing craft creates mental images that put the reader right in the room with her looking into the eyes of her patients or leafing through medical files.
Dr. Gondolo understands that the magic of clarity holds the key to reader engagement. Just as she peers into a patient’s eyes and deciphers their ailment, she gazes into her readers’ minds and tailors her prose with precision. My only wish is that the sketches at the end of the chapters would come at the beginning instead. Otherwise, she has written a wonderful collection of stories.
As readers take in her last commentary on mortality, there will be a resounding verdict: Fifty Shades of Gray Matter is an eloquent tapestry of wisdom and wonder, masterfully woven by an insightful physician who intertwines her patients’ chronicles with the threads of her own narrative. Dr. Teresella Gondolo has taken what could be a boring series of M&M conferences and bound them into playful yet serious bits of intriguing stories. She does not mean to entertain, but she will keep you glued to the pages to the very end.

Knowledge Is Power
Posted by Literary_Titan

The Power of Your Spine: How Back Strength and Posture Pilots the Entire Body explains to readers the vital function of back muscles and the spine and how to care for this important area of the body. Why was this an important book for you to write?
One reason this book was important for me to write, which is the core of all my books, is to help educate people to help them heal, support, maintain, and exercise their bodies safely. I often say, “Knowledge is power.” I wanted to teach the power of this spine.
What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?
In this book I share illustrations of muscles that we all have. In order for me to teach the “Power” of the spine, readers need the visuals in these illustrations for better learning and understanding.
What is a common misconception you feel people have about back pain?
I find a big misconception about back care and muscles is the “cliche” of what the core muscles are. In social media we often see posts and videos with strong titles like “3 best exercises for your core” or “number one exercise everyone should do for their core” etc. The “core” also includes the many deep muscles in the spine.
These deeper muscles play essential roles in walking, standing, posture, balance, stabilization, and movement. If they are weak and/or ignored the larger muscles try to do the smaller muscles jobs and this causes malfunction, injury, and pain.
What is one thing you hope readers take away from your book?
A gain of knowledge. Once the knowledge shared in this book is known, this can help the reader find a knowledgeable trainer, chiropractor, physical therapist, and more. If professionals helping me heal or in therapy do not know the purpose of all the muscles and how they work together as a team, they cannot help to the extent most people need. For example, if someone is going to a personal trainer, physical therapist, or massage therapist for back care (posture, pain, strengthening, etc.), these professionals should know all the muscles in this book.
Also, many professionals hand a patient/client a piece of paper with exercises to go home and do. Well, the paper is usually the same for every person with back pain. Its usually not based on the individual’s personal situation. This leaves people unable to heal or get more injured.

I’m Not Stupid I Have Hearing Loss – A Story of Hearing Loss & Hearing Aids – Including Hearing & Brain Care Tips
Posted by Literary Titan

In I’m Not Stupid, I Have Hearing Loss: A Story of Hearing Loss & Hearing Aids Including Hearing & Brain Care Tips, Tracy L. Markley delves into her journey with severe hearing loss. From her earliest years in grade school, Tracy encountered challenges with writing, comprehension, and mathematical tasks. Little did she realize that her struggles stemmed from her hearing loss, which may have been present since birth. Instinctively, at a tender age, she taught herself to read lips, a skill that greatly enhanced her ability to comprehend and communicate effectively. However, it wasn’t until her thirties, when Tracy sought professional help, underwent a hearing test, and obtained her first hearing aid, that her life underwent a transformative shift.
Tracy’s story takes us on a captivating journey as she navigates through various stages of her life, experimenting with different hearing aids and encountering diverse reactions from those around her. Throughout her experiences, she emerges as a strong advocate for treating individuals with kindness and patience, advocating for greater understanding and support for those with hearing loss. Tracy’s remarkable honesty and the raw emotion she infuses into her story. Fearlessly, she confronts the instances where she was made to feel inferior or unintelligent, recognizing that her hearing loss was the underlying cause. Through self-acceptance and embracing her past, Tracy now approaches each day with enthusiasm, embracing her hearing aids as essential tools in her journey. Reading this book is akin to having an intimate conversation with a close friend over a refreshing beverage. Tracy writes in a warm and approachable tone, skillfully weaving her chapters into concise, anecdotal stories from her childhood and her experiences with acquiring and adapting to different hearing aids. As readers, we are offered a comprehensive understanding of the hearing loss experience, even if we have not personally encountered it.
The book’s informative yet accessible style makes it an excellent choice for anyone seeking to broaden their understanding. This is the second book I have read by Tracy, and her kindness, knowledge, and expertise continue to impress me.

The Power of Your Spine: How Back Strength and Posture Pilots the Entire Body
Posted by Literary Titan

The Power of Your Spine: How Back Strength and Posture Pilots the Entire Body by Tracy L. Markley is an exceptionally enlightening and valuable book that takes readers on a profound exploration of our physical beings. Tracy’s motivation to write this book stems from her interactions with individuals, aiming to foster an understanding of our bodies’ fundamental composition: bones and muscles. She emphasizes that comprehending the intricate workings of each muscle, both independently and in synergy with others, holds the key to cultivating a healthy and pain-free physique. By prioritizing good posture, exercise, and providing our bodies with proper care, we can significantly enhance our physical well-being, thus elevating our overall quality of life.
The book’s composition showcases Tracy’s masterful craftsmanship, characterized by an amiable yet highly informative tone that resonates with readers of all backgrounds. One notable example is Tracy’s inclusion of anatomical terms. The author thoughtfully incorporates illustrations throughout the book, facilitating clear comprehension of muscle identification and function. Consequently, readers can grasp the knowledge imparted by the book and overcome the challenges associated with anatomical terminology.
While the author acknowledges the relevance of the book to individuals in recovery or older age groups, I firmly believe that its usefulness extends to people of all demographics. In our contemporary society, where rapid-paced living and technological advancements dominate, many of us find ourselves bound to chairs or computer screens for prolonged periods. Moreover, poor posture, although an individual concern, affects a substantial portion of the population. Understanding the root causes of bodily discomfort and equipping ourselves with the knowledge to alleviate such pain becomes imperative for leading a pain-free existence.
The Power of Your Spine: How Back Strength and Posture Pilots the Entire Body by Tracy L. Markley is a book that should be embraced by everyone, as it empowers individuals to alleviate existing pain and prevent future discomfort. Personally, I intend to return to this invaluable resource repeatedly, employing it as an essential tool to guide my exercise routines and self-care practices.

Scars of Gold
Posted by Literary Titan

Scars of Gold is Sharon Stoliar’s true story of giving birth in the hands of a system that failed her and the long-lasting effects it has had on her life. In November 2011, Sharon Stoliar became a mom for the first time. After a fairly unproblematic pregnancy, she was sent off to an emergency cesarean section due to her posterior-facing baby. However, instead of getting to heal and enjoy the precious first moments of her baby’s life, she was faced with the fact that she had developed acute compartment syndrome, a rare complication in the postpartum period that requires urgent decompressive surgery (a fasciotomy) to prevent permanent damage and amputation. Sharon’s case, however, was not handled as it should have been despite her being a midwife herself and trying to open the medical staff’s eyes in order to treat her properly. The poor care she obtained left her with immense problems in her right leg that continue to cause physical challenges in her daily life.
This eye-opening book left me speechless reading the author’s story. Why is the most beautiful thing in the world handled so poorly? Another thing I thought of while reading is all the women whose healthy babies die during birth due to various causes; I can’t even imagine the pain these women face. And finally, the fact that this doesn’t just happen during childbirth; it occurs in all aspects of seeking medical help and all around the world. People end up with a worse prognosis, are severely injured, or even die because of the lack of medical attention or the carelessness of the medical practitioners they relied on to help them.
Sharon is truly a hero and inspiration both as a mother who went through a horrible experience leaving her with lifelong health issues and as a midwife who is passionate about making a change. And on top of that, she doesn’t put the blame on anyone, knowing that there was nothing they could do to prevent her syndrome, but rather encourages her colleagues to listen because if they did, she might have ended up with fewer consequences now.
I genuinely applaud the author for sharing her experience, no matter how painful it is for her, and how time doesn’t heal everything. I commend her for dedicating her life to helping better a somewhat broken system, and I think that this book should be a conversation starter for people who have been wronged and scared by the hands who were supposed to heal them, no matter if it was new moms or patients suffering from anything else.

The Villains Who Snapped My Spine
Posted by Literary Titan

The Villains Who Snapped My Spine: A Memoir by A. H. Nazzareno recounts the experience of the health crisis that the author suffered, which culminated in 2021. The book begins when he is admitted to the Boston hospital for surgery in June. As he prepares to undergo the operation, he wonders how long he has left to live. The following chapters switch back and forth from his time in the hospital to descriptions of several previous events the author refers to as “villains.” Showing these snapshots of various points in the author’s life over the preceding ten years provides insight into the past to help the reader understand what contributed to bringing him to this current point in his life.
The author of this memoir has a unique and interesting writing style filled with unexpected and often amusing descriptions and metaphors that I enjoyed reading. I liked that he avoided using typical cliches and found original ways to describe events and express his feelings throughout his experience dealing with what he eventually learns is a rare medical condition. The introduction to the book provided hints about the significant event that affected the author’s life, and these hints had me interested in continuing to read to find out exactly what happened. I liked the hopeful tone at the end of the book, especially given the author’s uncertain prognosis.
There were sections of the book that were a little hard to follow for me because the narrative did not always progress in chronological order and jumped forward or backward on the timeline in several places or went off on seemly insignificant tangents. I would have liked a little more clarification at the very beginning of the book, when the author was being admitted to the hospital in Chapter One, as to the details of the surgery he was about to undergo to better understand why he had such a grim view of the outcome. Without this information, I found my focus pulled away from what was happening in the present to wonder about the things that had not been fully explained. It wasn’t until later chapters, after the author went back to describe some of the previous events in the past, that the reader finally learns what had led up to that moment.
The Villains Who Snapped My Spine: A Memoir is a personal account of rare nervous system diseases and what life is like living with this condition. The author is candid, and readers will get to know him and develop an understanding of the life-changing impact this has had on him and others with similar conditions.
