A Combined Love for Murder Mysteries
Posted by Literary_Titan
Blood, With A Drop Of Sherry, follows an inquisitive older woman who is determined to find out who murdered an insufferable and arrogant man at a grand gala. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?
The inspiration for this plot was a real life person known to us personally and whom we depicted as the victim in the plot. As, sadly, although he was a friend, on more than one occasion, during a countryside weekend, we saw another side to him, that brought on the idea of writing a murder mystery book, in which such an arrogant character is murdered. Although the ‘friends’ gender, age etc. is changed in the book, the core negative aspects of our ‘friends’ personality is brought out in the book. Once this was decided, we were also keen to bring into the storyline, the extraordinary aspects of the beauty of The Nilgiris, India’s first UNESCO biosphere reserve. In essence, this book was brought on by our combined love for murder mysteries (particularly those that are based in the countryside) as well as for the land we live in.
What was your writing process to ensure you captured the essence of the characters?
Most of our characters evolved and developed from decades of meeting and getting to know people from very different and diverse backgrounds and cultures. There have been many who have stood out in our minds ~ for both positive and (quite often) negative reasons. These traits provided an invaluable compendium of useful information for realistic and ( we hope ) engaging character development. We were also keen that each character stood out as an individual against their own backdrops.
How do you balance story development with shocking plot twists? Or can they be the same thing?
The plot’s twists and turns were woven into the storyline’s development; inextricably linking the two. Thereafter, various aspects of the natural environment were entwined with scenarios which brought out different undertones to the story.
What is the next book that you are working on and when can your fans expect it to be out?
The next book we are working on is a sequel to Blood, With A Drop Of Sherry, featuring, of course, Sherry Darling and many of the characters in the first book. The plot is currently in its infancy, but will feature the art world in a sinister light, as the core subject, around which more than one murder occurs. Needless to say, the plot will, once again, be based on the Nilgiri Hills. We don’t expect the second book in the series to be published for another year.

The Stanton Falls Mysteries – Undercurrents of Betrayal
Posted by Literary Titan

In Undercurrents of Betrayal, the third and final novel of the Stanton Falls Mystery trilogy, Susan Reed-Flores delivers a fitting conclusion filled with intrigue, long-buried secrets, and the battle between good and evil. As the skilled law enforcement officers of Stanton Falls return, their mission is clear: uncover the sinister forces that have haunted the town’s history. The discovery of skeletal remains during the reconstruction of Stanton Falls Mansion sets off a chain of events that leads Chief Ross and his detectives on a gripping investigation. As the story unfolds, the team discovers that the remains belong to Evelyn Stanton, a woman who has been dead for nearly 50 years, with evidence pointing to murder. Detective Reed, despite being temporarily handicapped, uncovers a hidden basement in the mansion. This find links Evelyn’s murder to her love life and a powerful secret group known as the Guardian, whose influence over Stanton Falls runs deep. The town’s history, rife with murder, greed, and secrets, forms the backbone of this intense mystery.
It’s bittersweet to see the Stanton Falls trilogy come to an end, but Undercurrents of Betrayal does not disappoint. Reed-Flores expertly ties together the complex history of the town with the present-day investigation, revealing long-held truths that have shaped the town and its residents. The novel offers a deep dive into the mystery behind Stanton Falls, with historical events and the shadowy Guardian group creating an intriguing backdrop for the investigation. As always, Chief Ross, Detective Scalari, and Detective Reed are a compelling team. Their unwavering dedication to Stanton Falls’ safety, along with the support of their close-knit relationships, adds heart to the suspense. Reed-Flores creates characters who feel real, each with their strengths and vulnerabilities, making the reader invested not only in solving the mystery but also in the personal journeys of these officers.
The final installment emphasizes the importance of family and friendship, which grounds the high-stakes drama in emotional depth. While the plot is engaging and the characters well-drawn, I feel the tone can be somewhat inconsistent, occasionally shifting between formal and natural styles in a way that can be a little distracting. However, this doesn’t take away from the overall enjoyment of the book. The story’s intrigue, pacing, and character-driven narrative make it a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy.
I highly recommend Undercurrents of Betrayal to fans of mystery thrillers, particularly those who appreciate richly layered plots with strong character development. It’s a thrilling end to a series that has consistently delivered suspense, emotion, and gripping storytelling.

Blood, With A Drop Of Sherry
Posted by Literary Titan

Blood, With A Drop Of Sherry, by T.S. Marni, is a masterfully crafted mystery that will evoke a deep sense of nostalgia for fans of Agatha Christie. Set against the backdrop of a high-society murder, the story revolves around the untimely death of AJ, an insufferable new-money figure whose arrogance is palpable from the very first sentence. Marni wastes no time in painting AJ as a thoroughly unlikable character, making readers loathe him before the end of the opening paragraph. His murder, during a grand gala, is hardly a shock—but the real intrigue lies in uncovering which of AJ’s many enemies committed the crime. This whodunit keeps readers hooked from start to finish.
One of the most delightful aspects of the novel is its clear homage to the Agatha Christie formula—complete with a murder among the elite, a small town where nothing seems to happen, and, of course, an older, inquisitive woman determined to solve the mystery. Yet, Marni brings a fresh twist with an infusion of Indian flair, adding cultural depth to the familiar structure. The story deftly moves between the various well-to-do families in the community, slowly peeling back layers to reveal the hidden scandals lurking beneath their polished exteriors.
I appreciated that the author resisted leaning too heavily on modern elements, allowing readers to bask in the classic, often snobbish atmosphere of high society, while still hinting that the story takes place in contemporary times. I feel the novel’s one challenge lies in its large cast of characters. As the narrative moves from family to family, it can sometimes be difficult to keep track of everyone and remember how they are all connected. I believe this could make it a little tricky for some readers to follow the story.
Blood, With A Drop Of Sherry is a must-read for fans of classic mysteries. T.S. Marni skillfully blends suspense, nostalgia, and cultural richness, creating a gripping tale that mystery lovers won’t want to miss. I’ll certainly be looking out for more from this author.

Enemies Domestic
Posted by Literary Titan

Lark Chadwick has reached a pinnacle in her career, a place she once thought impossible. Now, as the White House Press Secretary, she’s preparing to deliver a live TV address that she expects will be memorable. It is, but for reasons she never imagined. A reporter boldly asks her if she plans to abort her unborn child. Stunned, Lark struggles to find the right words. She doesn’t even know the answer herself. Her boyfriend is dead, and the thought of facing single parenthood is daunting. Now, she’s thrust into a public spotlight that threatens not just her career but possibly her very life.
Enemies Domestic, written by former CNN editor John DeDakis, is a gripping, timely thriller. It echoes the intensity of politically-charged TV dramas like The West Wing and the suspenseful storytelling of authors like Lee Child and Tom Clancy. This novel is a page-turner, diving headfirst into the highly charged issue of abortion in a post-Roe United States. For those who underestimate the significance of this topic, it’s likely they’ve never faced the heart-wrenching decision of whether to carry a pregnancy to term or not. Abortion garners extensive media coverage, but it’s hard to grasp the depth of passion on both sides until you’re in the thick of it. DeDakis understands this deeply. Perhaps his background in journalism allows him to craft characters with such authenticity and nuance. Lark Chadwick emerges as a relatable heroine, thrust into an impossible and all too real situation. Her emotional turmoil, coupled with the relentless scrutiny she faces, drives the novel’s tension. DeDakis skillfully navigates through heavy themes like mental illness, the rise of Christian Nationalism, and the world of conspiracy theorists. The result is a potent mix that will leave readers breathless and gripping the edges of their seats.
Too many thrillers fall into predictable patterns, but Enemies Domestic stands apart. DeDakis brings a level of depth and craftsmanship that elevates the material, making this novel an outstanding read in the genre.

The Teetotaler’s Bar
Posted by Literary Titan

Carolyn Summer Quinn’s The Teetotaler’s Bar is a delightful, quirky mystery that blends humor, intrigue, and a bit of heartfelt reflection. The story follows Jazz Kenneally, a young, health-conscious teetotaler who unexpectedly inherits a bar and a fortune from her estranged, half-aunt Lysandra Somersby. However, this isn’t just any bar; it’s a murder scene. Lysandra was shot in cold blood, and Jazz finds herself in the middle of a puzzling whodunit, surrounded by an eclectic cast of characters who each add their own flair to the unfolding mystery.
One of the most engaging aspects of Quinn’s writing is her ability to create a vivid, immersive atmosphere. From the bright, airy bar that defies Jazz’s expectations to the Art Deco elegance of the inherited apartment, every setting is described with such detail that it feels like a character in its own right. The juxtaposition of Jazz’s distaste for alcohol with her new role as a bar owner adds a layer of irony and humor that keeps the narrative lively. Jazz is a relatable protagonist, navigating the unexpected inheritance with a mix of pragmatism and bewilderment. The supporting characters, from the loyal but quirky bar staff to the eccentric tenants of the inherited building, are well-drawn and contribute significantly to the story’s charm. Quinn’s exploration of themes like family estrangement, responsibility, and the dangers of assumptions gives the book a thoughtful edge. Jazz’s reflections on her relationship with her late aunt and the moral dilemmas she faces as a sudden heiress add depth to what could easily have been a light, breezy mystery.
The Teetotaler’s Bar is a charming, offbeat mystery that will appeal to readers who enjoy character-driven stories with a mix of humor and suspense. It’s particularly well-suited for those who appreciate a cozy mystery with a modern twist, where the protagonist’s journey is as important as the mystery itself. This is a delightful read for a relaxed afternoon, offering both laughs and a few thoughtful moments along the way.

A Close-Knit Community Reacts
Posted by Literary-Titan

The Stanton Falls Mysteries is a short story collection centered around two police detectives who tackle three murder investigations in a small town in Connecticut. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?
My inspiration came from my fascination with small-town dynamics and the complexities of crime solving. I wanted to explore how a close-knit community reacts when faced with unexpected mysteries and two detectives navigate through these challenges while maintaining the town’s tranquility.
What was your approach to writing the interactions and the developing connections between your characters?
My approach was to create authentic and relatable characters. I focused on their individual backstories and personalities, which influenced their interactions with each other. The connections between the characters were built gradually, reflecting their shared experiences in law enforcement and mutual respect as they solved mysteries together.
What is the hardest part about writing a mystery story; where you constantly have to give just enough to keep the mystery alive until the big reveal?
The hardest part is giving just enough balance between revealing clues and maintaining the suspense. It’s important to give some answers, but not enough because you’ll solve the mystery too soon.
Can readers expect to see more work from you soon? What are you currently working on?
Yes! I am currently working on book Two and book Three of The Stanton Falls Mysteries Trilogy. Book Two is called Promotion to Peril and the third and final book in the trilogy is called Undercurrents of Betrayal. I’m hoping to have both books released by the end of 2024! I’m also currently working on a new book that combines the elements of romance and science fiction. I’m also exploring the idea of self-publishing and am in the process of setting up my own self-publishing company. It has been quite a learning curve, but a wonderful experience!

Pompeii: Till the Stars Fall from the Sky
Posted by Literary Titan

Lorraine Blundell’s Pompeii: Till the Stars Fall from the Sky masterfully intertwines history, romance, and the supernatural in a narrative that spans from the height of the Roman Empire to modern archaeological endeavors. The story follows Lucia, the daughter of a Roman senator, as she navigates life in Pompeii leading up to the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius, and Kate, a contemporary archaeologist uncovering the mysteries of the ancient city. Through these dual timelines, Blundell explores themes of love, loss, and the enduring nature of human ambition and desire.
Blundell’s writing is richly descriptive, vividly bringing to life the opulence and decadence of ancient Pompeii. The Villa Oplontis, a central setting in the novel, is depicted with such detail that it feels almost tangible. Descriptions of the villa’s frescoes, mosaics, and gardens are immersive, highlighting the grandeur of Roman architecture and art. The historical accuracy in the depiction of Pompeii’s final days, alongside the personal stories of its inhabitants, makes the ancient world feel immediate and real. The author’s background in history and archaeology shines through, adding depth and authenticity to the narrative.
One of the strengths of Pompeii is its complex characters. Lucia’s journey from a sheltered senator’s daughter to a resilient survivor is very interesting. Her interactions with historical figures, such as Empress Poppaea, and her budding romance with Amatus add layers of intrigue and emotional depth. In contrast, Kate’s modern-day story provides a fascinating look into the challenges and thrills of archaeological work. Her relationship with Alessandro, another archaeologist, mirrors Lucia’s story, creating a bridge between past and present. This parallel storytelling enriches the narrative and emphasizes the timeless nature of human experiences.
The novel’s ambitious scope ensures a rich and detailed exploration of both timelines. The transitions between the ancient and modern stories keep the reader intrigued, highlighting the contrasts and connections between past and present. The wealth of historical and archaeological details enriches the narrative, providing a deep and immersive experience that complements the characters’ personal stories, making the historical context come alive vividly and educationally.
Lorraine Blundell has written a captivating novel that will appeal to fans of historical fiction and romance. The author’s ability to weave together historical fact and fiction, along with her richly detailed descriptions, make this a novel I highly recommend.

The Stanton Falls Mysteries
Posted by Literary Titan

In The Stanton Falls Mysteries, by Susan Reed-Flores, readers are treated to three captivating short stories: “Murder at the Museum,” “Murder at the Marina,” and “Murder at the Lakehouse.” Set in the picturesque town of Stanton Falls, Connecticut, these tales revolve around two dedicated local police detectives who find themselves at the heart of intriguing murder investigations. Each story is approximately 40 pages long, making them perfect for a quick and satisfying read.
In “Murder at the Museum,” Detective Dan Ross takes center stage as he investigates the murder of Jack Crawford, an employee at the town’s art museum. The list of suspects includes the museum board members and Crawford’s former lover and executive assistant, Charlotte Wayward. The second story, “Murder at the Marina,” shifts the focus to Detective Ross’ partner, Detective Anthony Scalari. Here, Scalari delves into the mysterious death of Joseph Camden, an Assistant VP at an insurance company. This installment also enriches the narrative with callbacks and further character development for Detective Ross and Charlotte. The third story, “Murder at the Lakehouse,” masterfully intertwines elements from the first two tales. Both detectives join forces to unravel the murder of an unidentified man near Detective Ross’ lake house, bringing together threads from their previous cases.
Susan Reed-Flores employs a formal writing style that, despite the grim subject matter, maintains a wholesome tone throughout the book. The detectives are portrayed not only as skilled professionals but also as individuals with supportive personal lives, adding depth to their characters. The seamless blending of the stories creates a cohesive and engaging reading experience. These stories are an excellent recommendation for fans of classic “whodunit” mysteries, those who prefer their crime stories on the lighter side, and anyone seeking a quick and enjoyable read.
The Stanton Falls Mysteries provides a delightful escape into a world of intrigue and well-drawn characters, leaving readers eager to see if personal conflicts might arise for Detectives Ross and Scalari in future installments.
