Butterfly Ink

Butterfly Ink by Lori Keating is a compelling tale of self-discovery and transformation. The story follows Calli Stockton, a young woman whose life of fame, beauty, and fortune is upended by a magical tattoo that changes her outward appearance. Through a series of emotionally charged events, Calli learns profound lessons about authenticity, friendship, and inner beauty, ultimately leading her to a heartfelt decision to embrace her true self.

Keating’s writing is engaging and relatable, making it easy to become immersed in Calli’s journey. The character development is particularly strong, with Calli’s evolution from a superficial social media star to a genuine, self-aware individual being both believable and inspiring. One of the most poignant moments is when Calli decides to write an open letter to her followers, revealing her true self and rejecting the pressures of societal beauty standards. This act of vulnerability not only marks a turning point for Calli but also resonates deeply with readers who have felt similar pressures.

The book’s ideas on beauty and self-worth are thought-provoking. Keating challenges the conventional notions of beauty through Calli’s experiences with her magical tattoo, which initially provides her with physical perfection but ultimately leaves her feeling empty. The contrast between Calli’s superficial relationships and the genuine connections she forms when she embraces her true self is striking. For instance, the bond she forms with Daisy, a young girl at the camp, underscores the theme that true beauty and worth come from within. Keating also excels in creating vivid and memorable scenes that stay with the reader. The description of Calli and Amanda’s butterfly-themed photo shoot is particularly enchanting, capturing the magical realism that permeates the story. These imaginative elements add a layer of depth to the narrative, making it not just a story of personal growth but also a whimsical adventure.

Butterfly Ink is a heartfelt and beautifully written novel that I would highly recommend. It is especially suitable for young adults and anyone grappling with issues of self-image and authenticity. Lori Keating’s ability to weave a magical tale while addressing real-world issues makes this book a valuable read for those looking to find the courage to be their true selves.

Desperate for Love

Alyssa Milani Author Interview

Breaking Through To You follows a twenty-three-year-old woman who, after being stood up, meets a man who helps her onto a road of self-discovery and finding what she truly wants in a relationship. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

I wanted to write a story about a girl desperate for love and a boy desperately trying to avoid it, and then have them meet. Thus Breaking Through To You was born.

Did you plan the tone and direction of the novel before writing, or did it come out organically as you were writing?

I never outline or plan. I come up with a scene and let the story unravel as I go.

Your characters are wonderfully emotive and relatable. Were you able to use anything from your own life to inform their character development?

Bits and pieces of their lives are similar to the lives of the people I know and love. I’m an observant person, and I always pay attention to details when it comes to conversations and personalities. Much of what I write is based off of that.

What is the next book you are working on, and when will it be available?

I have a few in the works. As Far As We Knew will be available February 14, 2024. The Stowaway: Series will be available March 17, 2024. Meeting You will be available April 23, 2024 (which also happens to be my birthday)! I’m also working on a sequel for Breaking Through To You which I hope to have released by November 2024.

About That Brit

Erin Lynne’s fourth installment in the ‘About That’ series, About That Brit, delivers a delightful contemporary romance that treads the often treacherous path from roommates to lovers. Elena Bianchi, freshly single and in dire need of a new residence, finds herself sharing a living space with the charming British playboy, Jasper Notting, a friend’s acquaintance. The palpable attraction between the two characters is instant, leading to a swift and passionate involvement.

This carefully crafted narrative promises a casual liaison with no strings attached, yet as emotions gradually seep into their arrangement, the duo is thrown into a tangle of dilemmas. Will the commitment-phobic Jasper change his ways for Elena, or will the latter once again find herself seeking a new home?

About That Brit is a heartily enjoyable read, interspersed with humorous elements that elicit outright laughter. One particularly compelling aspect of the narrative is the protagonist Elena, an aspiring writer and publishing industry professional whose career progression aligns perfectly with my personal affinity for such characters. Her collaboration with Jasper on her book idea and her bold decision to abandon a stable job to pursue her dream is inspiring and engaging.

I think the narrative could have benefitted from a more detailed exploration of Elena’s contributions to the book she co-authored with Jasper. The vividly described escapades in London, which see Elena and Jasper soaking in the city’s renowned tourist attractions, offer a refreshing detour in the plot.

While the book is part of a series, it stands its ground as a compelling standalone read. The subtle references to characters and past events pique interest, inciting a desire to delve into the preceding volumes. Lynne masterfully hooks readers with an enticing hint for the next installment towards the end of this narrative.

The author exhibits an innovative command over language, cleverly modifying familiar idioms to convey unique implications – an example being the transformation of “curiosity killed the cat” into “curiosity had gotten the cat,” eliminating negative undertones and altering the phrase’s traditional interpretation.

Lynne’s writing style, a delightful fusion of warmth, humor, and sincerity, is highly commendable. About That Brit is recommended for anyone who relishes a charming, humorous, and heartfelt romantic tale.

This novel offered an array of perspectives that could be seen as authentic representations of diverse characters, adding to its appeal. There were moments of body positivity that could have been emphasized more, and it would have been rewarding to see the characters embracing all body types with more acceptance. Some scenes may have felt a bit prolonged, but they could also be seen as opportunities to immerse oneself deeper into the narrative’s intricate world. One particular scene included multiple text message conversations, which added a layer of realism, though it would be helpful if the formatting could be tweaked for better readability. Furthermore, the inclusion of specific Indian phrases and references enriched the cultural texture of the book. It would be fantastic if a glossary or index could be provided for those unfamiliar with the culture, enhancing understanding and appreciation of the narrative.

Operation Mom is a heartwarming exploration of Indian culture and the intricacies of mother-daughter relationships, all wrapped up in a humorous narrative. This book is a must-read for those who revel in culturally rich stories and enjoy an engaging romp through the labyrinth of love, family, and friendship.
