A Forbidden Relationship

Jasmine Wallace Author Interview

Demon’s Choice follows a demon in human form who finds himself intensely attracted to a human waitress despite the idea of a human/demon romance being ill-advised. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

My husband and I were rewatching Supernatural for possibly the fifth time, and the season where Dean becomes a demon, however short-lived that was, made me wonder how a demon would react if their loved one was threatened. Dean as a character is very protective of his family, and the thought occurred to me that as a demon this characteristic could be magnified. This went on to consider how a demon would react if their loved one ending up being the sacrifice used to summon them.

But I didn’t want to just repeat stories I had read where the sacrifice was merely sent to the demon and they end up sparing the sacrifice’s life with a new deal. I wanted it to be something that stood out, that pulled on heartstrings from the beginning. The only way I could see that being done was to turn the sacrifice into a blood ritual, meaning the sacrifice would already be dead on the demon’s arrival. Obviously, with this being the love interest that would bring the story to a very abrupt end before it even begun. That in turn birthed the creation of boundlings, sacrificed souls that agree to live on to serve Hell. From that, I delved into creating a full world with intricate lore for how Hell functioned, and how each demon served a purpose.

The relationship between a demon and a human developed naturally from that. Demons are immortal and serve a very specific purpose in the expansion of Hell. If humans knew about them, that would greatly hinder their work, so logically demons that operated on Earth had to be secretive. And everyone loves a forbidden relationship.

Your characters are richly developed, making readers want to get to know them. What character did you enjoy writing for? Was there one that was more challenging to write for?

Ambrose was my favourite character to write in Demon’s Choice. He is a character that has lived in my head for I’m honestly not sure how long anymore, but he never really fit into a story until now. When the concept for Demon’s Choice came to me, I knew instantly he was made to fill the shoes of the main male character and love interest. The story itself focuses on Lena’s journey, but it is through the patience, support and love that Ambrose provides her that makes that journey possible.

However, one character that gave me the greatest challenge was Cyrus. Not because he was difficult to write, or that I didn’t enjoy developing his character, but because he wanted to be the focus of any scene he was a part of. I am a firm believer that our characters are real to us and Cyrus absolutely proved that to me. I frequently had to have conversations with him to tone his attitude down, to the point where I promised him the second book in the series so he would get his time to shine. And boy, did he.

In fantasy novels it’s easy to get carried away with the magical powers characters have. How did you balance the use of supernatural powers?

Before delving into the power systems of Hell, in a rare moment of actual planning, I wrote out how each power manifested. The different kinds of elemental power I wanted to introduced and how they interacted, or counteracted, with each other. Self-healing was a necessary for some demons, but much like with sports, some are better at it than others, and some cannot harness this ability at all. This was helped by introducing demonic rankings, creating lower and higher-level demons, all with varying ranging of abilities and powers. The key was simply to be consistent, and to refer back to my lore as and when needed.

Where does the story go in the next book, and where do you see it going in the future?

The purpose of the series is to build to the actual Apocalypse. Book 2, Demon’s Faith, focuses on Cyrus and Marcus, characters introduced in Book 1, and their developing relationship as they support and serve Lena in her new role. Likewise, the following books will focus on different couplings, but all driving towards the same goal. Bringing about the Apocalypse.

The final book in the series will be told from four perspectives or one character from each of the preceding books. It will be the ultimate end and culmination of all previous narratives. All will be tested more than they ever have been, and not all will survive. It’s the end of days after all.

I also plan to have a number of spin-off novellas, features characters we have met along the way, but that have no real bearing on the main storyline. Giving me the opportunity to continue living in my world of demons.

Lena moved to town to disappear, but found herself drawn to a man that could do anything but…

Sacrificed to a demon she finds herself thrown into a world where she is the centre of attention, completely dependent on the man she longs for. Others now covet her and her growing power, seeking to tear her apart from the only person who has truly cared for her. The one she chose to be with.

Can she find the strength to save both her and her heart?

New Trails

New Trails by Jody Norman is an engaging fantasy novel that transports readers to the world of Abhaile, a realm where ancient powers, complex societal structures, and the eternal struggle between light and darkness shape the destinies of its inhabitants. The story follows Troy Kirkland, a young man from Earth who finds himself inexplicably drawn into this mystical world, and Kieran, a native Guardian, as they navigate the intricate web of alliances, betrayals, and hidden truths that bind their fates.

Norman’s writing is immersive and richly descriptive, painting a vivid picture of Abhaile’s landscapes and the mystical elements that define its existence. The opening scenes, where Troy finds himself stranded in the desert with a blown tire, quickly set the tone for the adventure and mystery that follow. The author’s ability to blend the everyday with the fantastical is one of the book’s standout features. For instance, the shift from Troy’s mundane troubles to his encounters with Olaf Henderson, who can see multiple futures, creates a compelling juxtaposition that hooks the reader early on. The author’s character development and the emotional depth of the protagonists are standout features of this book. Troy’s journey from skepticism to reluctant acceptance of his new reality is handled with nuance. His initial interactions with Henderson are particularly striking, revealing Troy’s internal conflicts and his struggle to reconcile his past with his unexpected new role. Kieran’s character is equally well-drawn, and his bond with Troy adds a layer of emotional resonance to the narrative. The dynamics between them, especially during moments of crisis and revelation, drive the story forward and make their journey both believable and engaging. The detailed world-building and intricate plot are strengths that invite readers to fully immerse themselves in Abhaile’s rich society. The multiple layers of Abhaile’s society, the various types of energy workers, and the numerous rituals and customs introduced throughout the story offer a depth that rewards attentive readers. While some may find themselves referring to the glossary frequently to keep track of the different terms and characters, this adds to the experience of uncovering the story’s many facets, making it a deeply engaging and interactive read.

New Trails is a richly woven tapestry of fantasy, emotion, and adventure that will appeal to fans of detailed world-building and character-driven stories. Jody Norman’s ability to blend the familiar with the fantastical creates a narrative that is both engaging and thought-provoking. This book is particularly well-suited for readers who enjoy diving deep into complex worlds and unraveling the intricate relationships that drive the story.

A Sinister Love

In A Sinister Love, by Spencer Hixon, we are introduced to Scribble, a demoness abruptly reassigned from her mundane clerical duties to a role she never anticipated: a Sinister on Earth. Tasked with tempting her assigned human, Paul, into sinning, Scribble struggles not from a lack of cunning, but because she tends to talk more than she tempts. Deciding that a physical presence might improve her odds, she assumes a succubus body with the help of her enigmatic new boss. As Scribble navigates her new form, she not only charms Paul into offering her a job but also grows unexpectedly close to him, leading to unforeseen emotional complications. Is her discomfort due to the new body, or could she be falling for a human?

Hixon’s portrayal of Scribble as an avid reader adds an unexpected layer of relatability to the demoness, making her journey from timidity to bravery quite compelling. Similarly, Paul is a thoughtfully crafted character whose struggles with mental health add depth and relevance to the narrative. The character of Rotworm is vividly realized—his sleazy demeanor is palpable, yet he delivers surprises that leave readers eager for more. While the novel excels in character development and a gripping plot, I feel that some areas seemed a bit underexplored and could benefit from further elaboration. Despite these minor gaps, this book remains a highly engaging read, especially for those who appreciate a blend of supernatural elements with human emotional dilemmas. Hixon’s work is a commendable addition to the genre, promising a level of intrigue that will keep readers looking forward to the next installment.

Spencer Hixon’s A Sinister Love masterfully blends the supernatural with the profoundly human, crafting a narrative that is both entertaining and emotionally resonant. Through the eyes of Scribble, a demoness finding her footing among humans, readers are treated to a story that challenges the traditional boundaries of genre fiction. This book is sure to delight those who enjoy tales of personal growth, supernatural intrigue, and the complexities of love, making it a worthy addition to any reader’s collection.

Selfless Heroes

D. A. Chan Author Interview

The Kindred Chronicles: Tides of War follows a man desperate to delay a war who injects himself with a mutagen, ending any hope for him to have a future with the woman he loves. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

Well, in Book 1 (The Kindred Chronicles: Between Two Worlds), I established the fact that Chris thought he was “all that.” He viewed himself quite highly and was subtly proud of it. But at the same time, he was quite indecisive; decisions were mostly made for him. And that’s what happens to so many of us today. Many of us don’t know what we truly want in life, nor do we stand up for what we believe in. So I ended Book 1 with Chris finally making a decision for himself, and it was one that was both painful and selfless. I wrote it this way because deep down, I believe all of us want to be the kind of selfless heroes that we read in books and watch in movies.

I find the world you created in this novel brimming with possibilities. Where did the inspiration for the setting come from, and how did it change as you were writing?

To be perfectly honest, I’m not sure where the inspiration for the setting came from. I’ve been a fan of fictional worlds for as long as I can remember, and I developed an irrational fear of sharks when I was young (thanks to Jaws). So I believe that the planet Krypton as depicted in Man of Steel was the main inspiration for Demos Geras, while the mystery and terrors of Atlantis come from my shark phobia. It changed even more as I was writing when my brother invited me to go scuba diving, as that one-time experience gave me a sense of how deep, vast, and enigmatic the ocean truly is.

What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?

One of the main themes I really wanted to push was the idea that duty and selflessness can be more noble, admirable, and fulfilling than following one’s heart (which is usually quite selfish or self-centered). The world today has become more and more individualistic, and I don’t see it going back to more traditional, community-centered, family-based values. So this book/ story is my humble attempt to show that there is still much value in thinking of others before thinking of one’s self.

What will the next book in that series be about, and when will it be published?

The next book will be The Kindred Chronicles: Gathering Storm. It will follow Chris, Elline, Empyrean, and the rest of the group all the way to Sol Thalen, the secret floating city of the blade dancers. There, we will find out more about thalenar ways, their connection to the wind, their traditions, values, rituals, and training. The backstories of several thalenar characters will also be given more focus, including Adriel who is half-weaver, half-thalenar. My goal is to publish Gathering Storm by June to September 2025.

EVEN MONSTERS DARE TO DREAM.
In a world teetering on the edge of war, Chris clings to a singular belief: even monsters dare to dream. But his decision to inject himself with the feras gul mutagen, a desperate bid to delay war between humanity and kindredkind, shatters any hope of a future with Elline.
Elline’s heart belongs to the Magister, Empyrean; theirs is a promise made in earnest. Yet as her father, the High Lord, prepares for the invasion of Atlantis, she finds herself drawn to Chris’s selflessness—a dangerous allure that jeopardizes her carefully constructed life with the Magister and the tremulous alliance between the kindred races.
This eagerly awaited sequel to Chan’s gripping debut pits convictions against the greater good, as Chris, Elline, and Empyrean must tread treacherous waters, torn between trusting a renegade atlantean faction that has betrayed their queen or a known traitor showing signs of redemption, while navigating the costliness of love and the currencies of war.

The Kindred Chronicles: Tides of War

Preparing for battle is never an easy task, especially when the survival of entire races and worlds hangs in the balance. D.A. Chan captures this intensity in The Kindred Chronicles: Tides of War, the compelling second installment in his series. Picking up immediately where its predecessor left off, this novel throws Elline, Chris, and their allies back into the fray. Fresh from a taxing yet inconclusive battle, they soon realize that their struggles are far from over. With the threat of Havet’s schemes still looming and the ambiguous loyalties of their allies adding to the uncertainty, the tension escalates as they train for the unknown challenges ahead.

Chan excels in immersive world-building, drawing readers into the richly detailed realms of Demos Geras with deft descriptions and meticulously crafted language complete with a helpful appendix for translation. The pace is brisk, propelling the story forward through vivid scenes brimming with action and intrigue. While the characters may seem familiar to aficionados of the genre, fitting well within established archetypes, they are nonetheless crafted with enough depth and flair to keep them engaging. The narrative deftly balances the thrill of battle with the complexities of interpersonal relationships, weaving in a romantic subplot that, while expected, is handled with finesse within the broader epic stakes.

Chan’s narrative is a testament to the importance of solid world-building in fantasy literature, offering not just escapism but a fully immersive experience. The book concludes with a tantalizing cliffhanger, promising more adventures and ensuring that readers will be eager to return. The Kindred Chronicles: Tides of War stands out as a noteworthy addition to the genre, offering both a thrilling tale and a deeper exploration of its expansive setting.

That Magic Mischief

In That Magic Mischief, by Susanna Allen, readers are treated to a delightful blend of romance, humor, and a touch of the mystical. The novel centers around Annabelle, an amateur witch grappling with the upheavals of life — a sudden breakup and joblessness. Her encounter with a mysterious witch leads her to acquire a hazelnut-turned-Pooka, a shape-shifting creature from Celtic mythology tasked with helping their human find love.

The story weaves its charm as Annabelle’s life becomes a whirlwind of new job opportunities and unintentional run-ins with a talented Irish artist, the antithesis of everything she seeks in a man. The Pooka, with its mischievous agenda, adds layers of humor and enchantment, transforming her life into an unforeseen adventure. Annabelle’s journey is not just about finding love; it’s a path of self-discovery, resilience, and openness to new experiences. This novel excels in blending the fantastical elements of Celtic mythology with contemporary life, creating an engaging world where magic seems almost plausible. Annabelle’s character is particularly commendable for her unwavering dedication to her friends and her willingness to embrace love despite past heartaches. The narrative also subtly underscores that while magic might initiate connections, it is the personal choices of the characters that truly shape their relationships.

That Magic Mischief offers an absorbing narrative. I do feel that a deeper exploration of Jamie’s perspective would have added richness to the storytelling. Nonetheless, this book is an excellent pick for those seeking a light, magical romance. Allen’s skillful writing and well-crafted characters ensure an enjoyable read for enthusiasts of paranormal romance with a humorous twist.
