Five Trips: An Investigative Journey into Mental Health, Psychedelic Healing, and Saving a Life

Kendis Gibson delivers an unforgettable memoir in Five Trips, charting the author’s journey from a turbulent upbringing in Belize to a remarkable career in American media. Gibson’s narrative grips readers with a blend of humor, raw vulnerability, and heartbreak, addressing themes of resilience, healing, and the pursuit of self-acceptance. The vivid settings—from the lush landscapes of Belize to the frenetic pulse of Brooklyn and the spiritual depths of the Peruvian Amazon—set the stage for a story that feels deeply alive and profoundly moving.

Gibson’s gift for storytelling stands out, marked by his fearless honesty. He masterfully balances humor with moments of intense emotional gravity, creating an authentic portrayal of his struggles. The memoir shines as he delves into pivotal relationships, like his friendship with Manny, and transformative experiences, notably his powerful ayahuasca ceremony in Peru. These moments reveal layers of trauma, love, and the ongoing quest for inner peace.

Gibson’s narrative voice is introspective yet animated, inviting readers to feel the highs and lows of his journey. It is worth noting that transitions from professional triumphs to spiritual and emotional crises can sometimes feel jarring, and the pacing occasionally wavers. Sections devoted to deep introspection or explorations of psychedelics may feel drawn out for those less familiar with these themes. However, these instances are overshadowed by the raw, insightful depth Gibson offers throughout.

Five Trips emerges as a courageous and thought-provoking memoir. Gibson’s candid reflections resonate with anyone grappling with identity, career hurdles, or the pursuit of healing. His story transcends surface-level narrative, making it a must-read for those who appreciate memoirs that lay bare the human experience with grace and grit.

Holistic Guidance

Breanna M. Washington-Weatherford Author Interview

The Creative Composition Guide to Self-Publishing and Marketing Children’s Books is a comprehensive guide that breaks down the entire process of self-publishing a children’s book. What inspired you to write this book?

I began my career as an illustrator, initially focused solely on drawing, but I soon found myself diving headfirst into other aspects of the book world—marketing, fundraising, developing supplemental resources, and booking events. Along the way, I had to learn about contracts, distribution platforms, print guidelines, and so much more. Supporting new authors over the years, I committed to learning as much as possible to provide them with holistic guidance.

I offered experiential advice in various online groups, and the most common question that came up was “I’ve written my children’s book, so now what?”. It hadn’t occurred to me at the time, but that would ultimately be the golden question to guide my writing process. It wasn’t until I booked my first multi-school, book tour and parent-teacher night when I thought to myself “There might be some educators and parents who may want to self-publish their own books … and I can help them.” From that realization, I began working on a 10 point 1-pager which quickly turned into a 10-page e-book, and gradually blossomed into the 10 chapters of The Creative Composition Guide to Self-Publishing and Marketing Children’s Books: A 3-in-1 Reference Guide for New and Aspiring Authors.

What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?

One of the most important concepts I share in The Creative Composition Guide is preparing your mind for the expansive path of becoming a children’s book creator. It’s far more than just writing a book and putting it out there. As an independent publisher, you have complete control over how your book will be presented to the world. I cover this in Chapter 0: “Nurturing a CREATOR’s Mindset,” which I lovingly refer to as the “seed” of your creative expansion. Another concept I emphasize is the importance of doing extensive research before committing to hiring any contractor to support your project. Your creative team can either enhance and expand your publishing experience or diminish and delay it. Taking the time to understand their interests and experience with your topic and genre is crucial.

What is one piece of advice you wish someone had given you when you were starting out as a writer?

Throughout my writing journey, I did my best to be as informed as possible by attending writers’ conferences, hiring a business coach, and conducting extensive market research. However, one piece of advice I wish I had embraced earlier and with more consistency is outlining and committing to a strategic marketing plan. Writing and publishing a book are only small parts of the bigger picture. Building and expanding your community of fellow writers and aligned readers makes the process much more enjoyable and fulfilling.

What is one thing that people point out after reading your book that surprises you?

I’m always pleasantly surprised when people comment on how much they enjoy the design of The Creative Composition Guide. As publishing day approached, I was hesitant to commit to the interior design, but I had a very specific creative vision. I’m grateful that I was able to see that vision manifest in its full form, and I’m thrilled that readers have responded so positively to it.

Five Trips: An Investigative Journey into Mental Health, Psychedelic Healing, and Saving a Life

Five Trips: An Investigative Journey Into Mental Health, Psychedelic Healing, and Saving a Life by Kendis Gibson is a deeply personal exploration of mental health, self-discovery, and healing. Gibson shares his life story, from growing up as the sixth son in a poor family in Belize, enduring love and tragic loss at just eight years old, to immigrating to America and facing a near-lifelong battle with depression and suicidal thoughts. Despite achieving the American dream—a successful career and a happy relationship—his struggles with mental health persisted. The turning point came one day when, waking up with thoughts of ending his life, Gibson realized he needed help. This realization led him on a transformative journey, taking five trips around the world to explore the healing potential of psychedelics.

Calling this book “raw” or “vulnerable” feels like an understatement. Gibson pours his soul onto every page, blending his personal narrative with the profound knowledge of psychedelic healing he gained along the way. From the very first chapter, readers are gripped by his openness. The story of how he survived a fall from his brother’s window as an infant, saved only by the trash piled beneath it, sets the tone for the remarkable resilience he displays throughout the book. The fact that no one came to help him for over an hour only adds to the raw intensity of his story. It’s rare to encounter such courage and honesty, and it’s clear from the beginning that Gibson is unafraid to lay his life bare. As the book unfolds, readers are immersed in more of these deeply vulnerable, tragic, and yet beautiful experiences that have shaped Gibson into the person he is today. Each chapter reveals another layer of his emotional depth and resilience, from surviving abuse and loss to navigating the complexities of immigration and identity. Gibson’s storytelling transports readers directly into his world, allowing us to see through his eyes the pain, triumph, and transformation that each stage of his life has brought.

What truly sets this book apart is Gibson’s straightforward yet emotionally intelligent writing style. He doesn’t waste words but still manages to create a strong emotional connection with the reader. His descriptions of psychedelic healing feel both grounded and deeply personal, offering a fresh perspective on a topic that’s been explored in many books but rarely with this much authenticity and lived experience.

Five Trips is more than just a memoir—it’s a gift. It offers a powerful narrative of hope and healing, especially for those grappling with their mental health. Gibson’s story isn’t just inspiring; it’s a reminder of the strength found in vulnerability and the transformative power of seeking help. This book is a must-read, particularly for anyone searching for a path through their own mental health struggles or those curious about the potential of psychedelics as a tool for personal healing.

Being Delivered Through Hard Times

Being Delivered Through Hard Times by Guy Gray and Cheryl Ward-Kaiser narrates the journey of two souls intertwined by fate through the adoption process and their shared belief in the redemptive power of faith. This narrative unfolds through the hardships and incredible coincidences that bring them closer to understanding and reconciling with their pasts. The tale is one of survival, resilience, and the unshakable grip of faith, even in the bleakest moments.

The writing is raw and forthright, which suits the story’s gravity. For instance, the straightforward recounting of events in Cheryl’s life, such as the traumatic crime that impacted her family, conveys an authenticity that I felt was harrowing and compelling. This kept me glued to the pages and constantly awaiting resolution or relief.

While the book presents compelling individual stories, there are moments where the shifts between Guy’s search for his birth mother and Cheryl’s personal experiences feel abrupt. These transitions may affect the overall narrative flow, potentially making it harder for some readers to follow the progression of events smoothly.

The book’s most resonant theme is its exploration of faith as a lifeline in desperate times. Both authors articulate how their belief systems provided solace and a path forward from their individual problems. For instance, Cheryl’s use of faith to handle the aftermath of her family’s attack and Guy’s reliance on faith in his search for identity and familial connection shows how deeply personal and transformative faith can be.

Being Delivered Through Hard Times is a testament to the human spirit’s capacity to overcome severe adversity through faith and inner strength. I recommend this book to readers interested in stories of personal triumph and the complexities of familial relationships influenced by adoption. I think the book will resonate well with anyone who appreciates narratives that do not shy away from the reality of pain but also highlight the potential for recovery and new beginnings.

Be Novel and Surprising

Deborah Shames & David Booth Author Interview

Your three-book collection, Briefly Speaking, is more than just a guide to public speaking; it is an entire educational course presented in an easy-to-understand and relatable manner. Why was this an important book for you to write?

We wanted those who aspire to become better presenters and communicators to have a comprehensive guide so they can achieve their ambitions. We designed the three-book series to focus on Prepare, Present, and Communicate to make it easy to find a topic and get practical, useful skills that can be incorporated immediately. Plus, each tip takes under 30 seconds to read—whether it’s how to open, close, tell a story, structure a presentation, or engage an audience. And each book is small enough to carry with you for easy reference.

Communication techniques and approaches are highly personal, but there are some key factors that are essential for getting your message across. What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?

First, decide on your message and identify a singular intention or what you want to achieve. Then scan your life for material that will illustrate your message so that it best engages your audience. Use structure so you don’t ramble, and always speak in a genuine, authentic way to build trust and reduce stage fright. And when you communicate, speak with commitment and certainty.

What is the one most important piece of advice you think all presenters should consider when preparing to give a speech, no matter what the topic is?

Determine what you want to achieve (i.e. your Intention) and what will best serve your audience. Then speak in specifics, not generalities so the audience can visualize your content. And be novel and surprising so that you grab and hold the attention of your audience.

Do you have additional books or materials planned that will complement this collection and help readers continue on their journey to improving their communication skills?

A Place of Love & Light

Ellen Edmondson’s A Place of Love and Light is a journey into the depths of spirituality and its practical implications in daily life. Through her meticulously crafted chapters, Edmondson not only invites readers on a path toward personal enlightenment and universal love but also offers a transformative experience. This book is more than a read; it is a catalyst for a deeper connection with the divine and with oneself, inspiring hope and optimism.

Edmondson’s writing style, a blend of clarity and deep compassion, makes complex spiritual concepts accessible and engaging. Her use of vivid metaphors and personal anecdotes enriches the narrative, demonstrating the practical application of her teachings in everyday life. Particularly compelling are her discussions on the “GOD Spark” and “God’s Presence,” which not only provoke thought but also instill a sense of empowerment and optimism about the human capacity for goodness and change.

The book’s content is enriching. Each chapter serves as a standalone meditation on aspects of spirituality, which some may appreciate as it allows for non-linear reading tailored to personal spiritual needs. The chapter on Self Mastery was particularly impactful to me as it dives deep into the essential practices of self-reflection and self-improvement, encouraging readers to cultivate virtues that enhance personal growth and societal contribution. One standout example from the book discusses the significance of “Be Still,” where Edmondson eloquently describes how moments of stillness are not just pauses but opportunities to connect deeply with the divine and listen to the subtle guidance of our inner selves.

A Place of Love and Light is a heartfelt guide to spiritual living that resonates with warmth and wisdom. It’s particularly recommended for those at the beginning of their spiritual journey or anyone seeking to deepen their understanding of a life led by love and light. The book acts as a gentle reminder of the divine within and around us, making it a valuable addition to any spiritual seeker’s library.

Divorce Is Not A Destination: A.A.C.T. In Joy!

In Divorce Is Not a Destination, Dr. Lisa Summerour presents a heartfelt exploration of divorce, drawing from her experiences and extensive work as a breakup and divorce coach. The book aims to transform the perception of divorce from a tragic end to a pivotal point of growth and self-discovery. Through personal anecdotes, practical exercises, and insightful reflections, Summerour encourages readers to embrace accountability, align their values, communicate effectively, and trust themselves as they navigate post-divorce life.

Dr. Summerour’s writing is both engaging and deeply personal. Her ability to share her vulnerabilities and triumphs makes the book relatable and inspiring. For example, her story of moving at the age of four due to her parents’ separation sets a poignant tone that many readers can empathize with. She doesn’t shy away from discussing the complexities of her multiple marriages and divorces, which adds a layer of authenticity to her guidance. The way she reframes these experiences, particularly through the concept of accountability, is empowering and refreshing.

One fantastic aspect of the book is the practical advice interwoven with personal stories. The chapters on creating alignment and clear communication were particularly impactful for me. Summerour’s emphasis on aligning one’s actions with personal values and her candid discussion on the importance of self-trust provide concrete steps for readers to follow.

The inclusion of cultural perspectives on marriage and divorce, such as the Mosuo’s walking marriage and Mauritanian divorce celebrations, offers a broader context that challenges traditional Western views. This enriches the reader’s understanding and fosters a more inclusive dialogue on what it means to be in a relationship and what it means to end one.

Divorce Is Not a Destination is a compelling read for anyone navigating the aftermath of a breakup or divorce. Dr. Summerour’s blend of personal narrative, cultural insights, and practical advice makes it a valuable resource. This book is particularly beneficial for those who feel stigmatized by their divorce or are struggling to rebuild their self-confidence.
