Mysterious Depths of the Sea

Feather Chelle Author Interview

Stranded: Cetacea Chronicles follows a group of immortal Dolphin Riders who are responsible for helping to maintain the marine ecosystem. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

I had been sketching out ideas for the characters and the stories that I wanted them to tell for many years, but I didn’t have time to actually write it until my newborn was diagnosed with cancer in 2014. It seems ridiculous that I would actually have more time to do something like this during such a time, but there was a lot of sitting and waiting at medical facilities. So, naturally, I rocked my baby and wrote a book on my phone. I wanted the first book to deal with the stranding of cetaceans because it is one of the most baffling behaviors they exhibit. After lots and lots of research, I discovered The Morbillivirus, dubbed it “The Great Sickness of Old,” and I was on my way.

What educational aspects were important for you to include in this book?

I fell in love with the ocean at age five, and I devoured every piece of literature I could find on the subject. Sadly, the few books I found did not sweep me away into the mysterious depths of the sea quite the way my own imagination did. I wanted to share these dreams with others as well as teach them as much as possible about these majestic creatures that I love so much. By leading young readers to fall in love with these animals, I just might help ensure another generation of sea guardians.

What was one scene in the novel that you felt captured the morals and message you were trying to deliver to readers?

When the whales are stranded on the beach at the end of chapter 4, they have a quick discussion about calling out to get help from people. Their matriarch, however, has heard troubling stories about “Those Who Walk on Two Legs.” This makes her decide to keep her family quiet. Although brief, this scene offers a glimpse at the long and rocky relationship that we have had with whales over the centuries. I wanted children to think about why this caution exists as well as ways to improve the relationship in the future.

Is this the first book in the series? If so, when is the next book coming out, and what can your fans expect in the next story?

This is the first of many stories I hope to write in this series. Even though I finished writing the book in 2015, I was unable to find time to publish until the Covid lockdown. It was only a strange coincidence that I published a book about a virus during that time, but I immediately began work on the next book. Entangled: Cetacea Chronicles Volume 2 is complete and with the editor now. I hope to release it within the next few months.

Whales and dolphins are falling ill all throughout the Atlantic Ocean! Cherish and her family of Pilot Whales have been fleeing as far from other animals as possible, but some of them have begun to show symptoms. When danger closes in from all around them, will the Dolphin Riders make it in time to save the day?

In this highly original book, the author combines a gripping fantasy story with impressive amounts of factual information about marine life. While the beautiful color photos illustrate the real world of marine mammals, aquatic plants, and sea birds, readers of all ages will enjoy using their imaginations to picture the magical Isle of Cetacea and its eternally young inhabitants.

Acceptance Starts With Asking Questions

Lisa Jacovsky Author Interview

In Happy Thoughts: Going to the Aquarium, a young girl with autism overcomes her anxieties with the help of her friends when she visits the aquarium and makes a new friend. Why was this an important story for you to share?

It was important because it’s rare to see anything let alone a book from a child with Autism’s point of view. Also, it was because Emma does not use her mouth to talk; she uses her cards and writing. This is something not seen at all in the literary book world. I thought that should be changed. I wanted to children to see themselves in Emma and families to see their loved ones. There is something so magical in seeing yourself in a book, and I wanted to bring that to children and families.

Is there anything from your own life in the characters in Happy Thoughts?

Yes, I am very passionate about animals and animal conservation. What better way to encourage children to want to learn about animals than to write about a visit to the aquarium? In the book, some of my favorite marine animals are shown, too. There really are no books that show Beluga whales, and that was important to me. They are beautiful, smart, and silly creatures that I thought should be showcased.

What is one thing you hope young readers can take away from Emma’s experience?

There are many different ways to talk. Also, talking differently makes us beautiful. Embrace your friends and family members who may talk differently or have anything that makes them different. Or go up to the little different one and become friends with them. Ask your teachers how and about what Autism is. Acceptance starts with asking questions to learn.

What next book are you working on, and when will it be available?

The next book that will come out is called Mischievous Cat Brothers, and it is book two in the Cat Brothers series. It should come out this summer and will be illustrated by the amazing individuals of Brainstorm Productions. The younger brother will narrate it, Snowball, making it a bit more silly.

Being The Best You

Christal Majestic Author Interview

Ruby the Emotional Stingray follows a stingray family who, together, teach and learn how to manage their emotions. What was the inspiration for your story?

As an adult, I have struggled with understanding and processing my emotions, and I’ve always said I wish I would’ve had a way to learn this sooner. After my grandfather passed away, I was at the beach by myself, watching the sun come up, and I finally decided that I was going to be the one to create such a book. If I could help just one child learn and understand their emotions, what causes them, and how to control them that’s the difference I want to make.

Children are often fascinated by aquariums and all the different sea life in the ocean. What made you choose a Stingray for your main character?

I have always been drawn to aquariums myself, so much so that it is my goal to visit every aquarium. I came up with Ruby when I was at the beach last year. I got up every morning before the sun came up to welcome the day and spend time with the animals. every morning I would walk the beach and I would see the same baby stingray every morning. I would sit and watch it, and that’s when I knew I had to finally start my dream of writing a book. Stingrays are amazing creatures, and it seemed very fitting. Stingrays have always been my favorite.

What were some educational aspects that were important for you to include in this children’s book?

My main goal was to give tools that would be easy to remember but strong enough to make a difference. Emotions can have a huge impact on your day-to-day life, and having that outlet and understanding can make a major difference.

Is this the first book in the series? If so, when is the next book coming out, and what can your fans expect in the next story?

Yes, this is the first book in the series but not the last by far! I expect the next book will be out before Thanksgiving of this year. Right now, there is a journal that goes with the lessons that Ruby has learned that children can use to put these tools to use. The next book will cover some very important topics essential to learn at a young age such as self-love, being the best you, and other topics that will help make kids feel like they are not alone. It will give them easy tools that will have a positive impact on their growth.

Oliver the Oyster and the Lost Lab

Understanding friendship is a crucial lesson for children as it aids in the development of their social skills. An exemplary illustration of this concept can be found in Oliver the Oyster and the Lost Lab, by Jared Auchter. The story opens with Oliver’s playful escapades on the seashore, where he encounters Mac, a Labrador retriever who has lost his way. Mac strayed from home earlier in the day while pursuing a rabbit and found himself disoriented. The story unfolds with Oliver and his companions deciding to assist Mac in locating his family by searching various locations in town. This endeavor leads them on an engaging and enlightening journey.

J.B. Auchter’s narrative masterfully blends entertainment with meaningful lessons for young readers. One particularly appealing aspect of the story is the diverse cast of characters. Oliver’s friends include Cathy the Crab, Miriah the Mermaid, and Clara the Clam. Their ingenuity in covertly exploring the town adds a little bit of intrigue to this children’s narrative. The scenarios they encounter are lighthearted, and their ability to adapt to unforeseen circumstances with humor will appeal to young readers.

The story also delves into the lives of Mac’s owners and the townspeople, contributing depth to the storyline. Auchter expertly captures the essence of the settings and characters’ emotions through vivid descriptions. The interactions between Oliver and his friends exemplify values like unity and collaboration, serving as positive examples for young readers. Persistence in the pursuit of goals is a central theme, reinforced by the characters’ unwavering determination. The inclusion of colorful illustrations and actual photos of Wellfleet is a welcome addition, providing an alternative perspective to the narrative.

Oliver the Oyster and the Lost Lab stands as an ideal reading choice for children seeking both an enjoyable story and an exploration of the significance of friendship. J.B. Auchter’s narrative craftsmanship and the valuable life lessons embedded within the tale make it a worthwhile addition to any young reader’s collection.
