The Women of the Philippines

W. B. Edwards Author Interview

Finding Rosie follows a young man fresh out of high school, trying to navigate his way through post-Vietnam War America, from his carefree surfing adventures to losing the love of his life in the Philippines. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

Actually, the book begins during the height of the war in Vietnam. And just like Sutton, I joined the Navy Reserves to avoid being drafted into the Army and ended up stationed in the Philippines. While I was there, I told all my pals that I was going to write a novel about Olongapo City and all the bars when I got home, and I did. It just took me until 2017 to finish it.

Were you able to achieve everything you wanted with the characters in the novel?

I wanted people to see what the women of the Philippines had to do to survive the conflict in Vietnam. I tried to paint them as seen through the American characters’ eyes, the way I saw them, the way I remembered them, and avoided trying to see things through their eyes. Besides Rosie, there was Raquel, Flora, and Rosie’s sister, Margaret. I’m disappointed the reviewer didn’t hear them as well as I’d hoped. To me, they were the heart of the story. But it is a good, honest review, and I’m very grateful for it.

What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?

That love can outlast our hopes and dreams, but there is always a price for hesitation. And that war will create casualties everywhere, not just on the battlefields.

What is the next book that you are working on, and when can your fans expect it to be out?

My next book will be called HYPNOTIZED, a tale of love and mystery that takes place in the town of Whittier, California during the summer of 1969. I’m hoping to publish it in early 2025.

Childhood Memories

W. B. Edwards Author Interview

Surf and Sand follows an adventurous twelve-year-old girl living in a seaside hotel with her mother and brother, who helps a detective to solve a missing person’s case, which is similar to a case in which he worked at the hotel before. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

I used my childhood memories of the old Hermosa Biltmore Hotel for inspiration. I was 13 or 14 years old, and my mother often booked a room for weekends during the summer of ’58 and ’59. While the adults visited a nearby casino in the evenings, my pals and I explored the old hotel’s dark hallways and basement for hours. Plus, they rented surfboards on the strand outside. So, my novel is based upon childhood memories and not so much on any research, although it was in fact called the Surf and Sand when it was built.

How did the mystery develop for this story? Did you plan it before writing or did it develop organically?

Organically. Mary Nell Morgan is 11 years old, sitting on the roof of the hotel, watching her brother and his friends surf, I was listening to her, and I suppose the mystery was something she needed because it kind of popped into my head.

Why choose this place and time for the setting of the story?

While reminiscing with my oldest friend one evening, he asked if I remembered our visits to the old hotel, and then suggested I write a story “where they find a body in the swimming pool!” Thanks, Fred!

What is the next book that you are working on, and when will it be available?

Hypnotized should be published by summer, 2025. I am still working on it.

During the summer of 1959, young Mary Nell becomes obsessed with solving the mystery that happened in the same beachside hotel where she now lives with her mother and 14-year-old brother. She also learns about the ocean, her mother’s history, and a few things about love and friendship. Then, after her brother’s girlfriend vanishes under eerily similar circumstances to the old mystery, the original detective reappears, and Nell works to help him solve both mysteries.

Originally published in 2019, the author thoroughly revised this work in 2023.

Surf And Sand: The Girl in the Seaside Hotel

Surf and Sand is a heartfelt, evocative story set in the 1950s, following Mary Nell Morgan, an adventurous twelve-year-old girl living in a seaside hotel. The narrative immerses readers in her world, filled with surfing, secret passages, and the enigmatic history of the Surf and Sand Hotel. Her journey of self-discovery unfolds against a backdrop of coastal beauty and echoes of mystery, particularly revolving around a ghostly tale of a missing girl tied to the hotel’s storied past.

W.B. Edwards captures the 1950s beach culture with a vivid nostalgia that feels deeply personal. The detailed surfing scenes are pure magic, especially when young Nell conquers her first wave. The author brings the sea to life; you can feel the salt spray and the tug of the tide as Nell finds her confidence. The descriptions of her tight bond with the water were some of my favorites. I did feel that some passages about the hotel’s history, while rich, wandered a bit long, but they added to the world-building. The writing truly shines when it focuses on Nell’s emotional growth. Her loneliness and determination are palpable, especially when she explores her “haunted” pool or secretly learns to surf. There’s a sweet mix of bravery and vulnerability in her character. Her budding relationship with the local surfers, like Mike, added warmth and realism to her story. However, I thought some side characters, like her brother Lonnie, could have been developed more deeply. His subplot in the kitchen seemed promising but fizzled without much resolution. The story’s mystery element, centered on the vanished Irene Young, provides a subtle but haunting undercurrent. Nell’s fascination with the tragedy felt genuine and age-appropriate, adding a layer of intrigue. The blend of her innocence with her drive to uncover the truth gives the book its emotional weight. Still, the ghostly aspect felt underused—more could have been done to tie Irene’s story more tightly with Nell’s journey.

Surf and Sand is a beautifully crafted slice of life from a bygone era, perfect for readers who enjoy nostalgic tales of youth, summer adventures, and light mysteries. It’s ideal for younger readers or adults who remember growing up near the sea. If you’ve ever felt the tug of the ocean or the thrill of learning something new, this book will take you back there.
