The Reclusive Chimp

Michael Dell Author Interview

Monkey Flip follows a pair of precocious kids whose father is accused of murder, so they call in a reclusive and grumpy, yet brilliant, talking chimpanzee detective to find the real killer and clear their father’s name. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

The book is set in the world of professional wrestling, and many wrestling personalities and storylines inspired the central mystery. Originally, the father was going to be a firefighter, but I love wrestling, almost as much as I love monkeys, so making him a wrestler felt natural. However, it wasn’t until CM Punk held a now-infamous press conference that the mystery truly came together. For the other themes, such as grief and overcoming loss, I drew on my own experiences, as I can be quite the reclusive chimp.

I enjoyed your characters, especially Sebastian Winthrop. What was your favorite character to write for and why?

I actually created Sebastian, the book’s chimp detective, when I was a teenager. Back then, he was Sebastian Winthrop, Millionaire Chimp, and I intended to turn him into a comic strip. Nothing came of it, but I never forgot about him. Writing Sebastian is easy because he’s just an exaggerated version of myself. I also really enjoyed writing Addie, the little girl. I tried to make her like a character in an old Bugs Bunny cartoon. Her interactions with Sebastian were always fun to write, and their love/hate relationship is the heart of the story.

How did the mystery develop for this story? Did you plan it before writing, or did it develop organically?

When I earned my MFA in Writing Popular Fiction from Seton Hill University, one of my mentors was Victoria Thompson, who wrote the Gaslight Mystery Series. Vicki was the best and taught me everything I know about plotting a mystery. Monkey Flip is my third novel, and I always start with the victim, the suspects, the suspects’ motives and secrets, and the key clues. From there, I structure a loose plot outline, where I know the beginning, the end, and about five “tent pole” scenes that have to be there. That provides the backbone, and then I still have the freedom to discover things along the way. I do a more detailed outline before each chapter, noting the characters’ motivations, obstacles, and goals.

I find a problem in well-written stories, in that I always want there to be another book to continue the story. Is there a second book planned?

Yes, a second book is in the works. This time, the story will take place at a comic book convention. Still ironing out the details, but the actual writing will commence soon. With luck, it should be out next summer.

Never send a monkey to do a chimp’s job.

When Addie and Bennett Pajakowski learn that their father, the fearsome Bonecrusher Brannigan, is accused of murdering one of his fellow professional wrestlers, they seek the help of Sebastian Winthrop, the world’s greatest detective. So, imagine their surprise when they discover that the reclusive Sebastian is a talking chimp!

Monkey Flip chronicles Sebastian’s investigation into the death of Mitch Mayhem, the heavyweight champion of a local independent wrestling federation. Along the way, Sebastian teaches Addie and Bennett what it takes to be good detectives while they show him that life should be lived and not mourned. The book takes a comedic, satirical look at the fanatical world of professional wrestling and touches on such themes as grief, acceptance, and the importance of family.

Some are already calling Sebastian one of the best detectives in fiction. Others call him the best. Just don’t call him a monkey.

Ngoc Khanh Schmidt Author Interview

Happy Bumble Bee follows a cheerful little bee on his daily nectar-gathering adventures, teaching children about pollination, friendship, and the beauty of working together in nature. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

I always love animals and nature, and I love bees. And so is my 4-year-old son. One day, he asked me if I could find a book about round bumble bees for him, and I decided that I should be the one who wrote and illustrated that book. That’s how Happy Bumble Bee was born. It is the book per my son’s request.

How did you balance scientific facts with storytelling to keep the book both educational and engaging?

I did a bit of research about bees, and I also read other authors’ works regarding bees.

Can you describe your illustration process and the choices you made along the way?

As a self-taught illustrator, it is not easy at all to write and illustrate the book yourself. I had to do research on how to do mood boards and format the book. I looked for different references, did many sketches, and learned more about color theory when I started coloring the book. There were a few artists that I admire and I joined their online courses, it did help me a lot through the process of illustrating the book.

What is the next book that you are working on, and when will it be available?

I’m currently sketching my 2nd book. It is another children’s picture book, age group is 2-6. It is about the friendship of a little boy and his rescued cat. This one will be a little longer, 44 pages. Therefore it may take me a while to finish. Hopefully early 2026 it will be available.

Leaving the Nest

Tuula Pere Author Interview

Carried by Wings follows a young condor learning to fly who is terrified and experiencing self-doubt as his brother eagerly soars into the sky. What was the inspiration for your story?

I listen to a wide range of music, from classical to folk and popular genres. I have many favorite songs in the lighter realm of music that evoke nostalgic memories and experiences. The concept of children’s books, even when loosely connected to my favorite songs and the emotions they inspire, has led me to create the Lyrics of Life book series.

I immediately listed my five favorite songs over the years, and my imagination began creating stories for children. While writing the Carried by Wings storybook, tunes from the Andes played in my head. I sometimes hummed along to the imaginary pan flute in “El cóndor pasa” or the vocal version “If I Could” by Simon and Garfunkel.

There is something very appealing about both versions of this well-known song. One can easily imagine scenes associated with high mountain peaks and steep slopes on stormy shores. The birds that live there represent a kind of primitive courage and survival that one cannot help but admire. – I wanted to include that in my story of two condor siblings.

What scene in the book did you have the most fun writing?

I want to highlight a scene that felt special to me. Writing that spread wasn’t just fun; it evoked a deeper feeling I would describe as a mix of freedom and happiness. I’m referring to the particular morning in my story when anticipation, excitement, and self-conquest culminated in Walter’s takeoff.

I’m especially moved when I think of young people who constantly face new situations requiring new skills, courage, and self-control. Life is full of these challenges as children grow up. Things become even more complicated when they have to reconcile their dreams and fears with the demands and expectations of their environment.

As I wrote that scene, I felt joy for all the main characters. The condor family’s nestling had truly crossed a significant threshold by stepping out of the nest and soaring into the skies. The parents had also accomplished their essential mission. They had nurtured their child and helped him develop to the point where his independent life could begin.

That part of the story is closely connected to the song “El cóndor pasa” playing in my mind. Although I have never been to the Andes, I enjoy watching nature documentaries about the highest slopes and their wildlife. For instance, the survival of birds in such harsh conditions is incredible.

What were some educational aspects that were important for you to include in this children’s book?

This book on growth and development benefits both children and the adults who guide them.

In this story, we can view the same situations from the perspectives of different characters. The young condor eagles, representing the child, perceive the challenges of growing up very differently from their parents. Even the two siblings interpret their current challenge of leaving the nest in quite opposite ways. One chick is filled with enthusiasm and takes its daring step too early, leading to tragic consequences. The other chick becomes increasingly cautious, effectively paralyzed by fear, and no longer believes in its abilities or chances of success.

This situation contains an important observation. Children starting in their own lives are individuals, and they should not try to follow others but instead trust their own judgment. Parents should also respect this. No matter how well-intentioned the educator may be, they can act against the child’s best interests.

Harm occurs when the adult rushes the learning schedule or pressures the child to do more or different things than are actually good for them. Additionally, there is a risk that parents may feel inspired through their children to pursue something they themselves have failed to do or achieve.

What is the next book in the Lyrics of Life series that you are working on and when will it be available?

The next two books in the Lyrics of Life series will be illustrated by Nyamdorj Lkhaasuren from Mongolia. One will direct our thoughts to space, while the other will immerse us in the life of a writer and his shepherd friend on a mountainside.

A Stargazer tells the story of a child fascinated by space who believes he sees more than others. Whether this is merely the child’s imagination is for the reader to decide. I’m looking forward to this book because I was interested in space as a child and often wondered what might be found there.

The main characters in The Hermit’s Hut represent the older generation. Some might argue that it’s odd to choose them this way. However, to me, this feels natural because I have always valued the connection and cooperation between different generations. In this book, the author of many books unexpectedly discovers a new way to pursue his life’s mission. Combining idealism with a new approach proves to be the solution. Of course, there are also children in the story, because a storyteller needs a diverse audience.

I hope this new series of mine, the Lyrics of Life, will resonate with readers. I believe it has the ingredients to work on two levels: one for children and one for adults. I’m sure a few imaginary background melodies won’t hurt either!

Realizing Our Dreams

Shain Stodt Author Interview

Sally Mitts and the Land of Imagination follows a curious cat who steps through a magical door into a world where creativity knows no bounds, embarking on an adventurous journey to restore the joy of imagination. What inspired you to create a character like Sally, a curious cat?

Sally’s a real persona to me. She isn’t a superhero, she’s vulnerable but she finds the courage to explore and grow in her stories. In her first book, she faces tough circumstances in a shelter and follows her instincts to choose a kind man for her new family.

In this second book, Sally Mitts And The Land Of Imagination, she discovers how powerful her creativity is when she embraces it and learns to believe in herself. Her potential for real friendships, aspiring, and healing all bloom when she enters the Land Of Imagination, where you can be whatever you imagine. And so can everybody else – sometimes hilariously. But that’s part of the joy of it.

The theme of imagination plays a central role in the story. What message do you hope young readers take away about the power of creativity?

I believe that a healthy imagination is essential to our well-being. It’s the path to realizing our dreams and desires. But this priceless gift is too often repressed as we “grow up.” Something invaluable is lost, without which our capacity for hope and beauty withers. Where there was life and color, there is only sterility and fitting into the status quo.

I hope Sally Mitts And The Land Of Imagination encourages young readers to treasure their unique creativity and facilitates a life-long love affair with their capacity to imagine. Wouldn’t that be wonderful?

Can you share more about the process behind the hand-drawn illustrations and how they complement the narrative?

I draw by hand because it allows me the greatest ability to capture the emotional content of my stories. Although time-consuming, I find this way I can best express the story’s nuances – from my heart to the readers.

When and where will the book be available?

Sally And The Land Of Imagination is available for half-price with pre-order on Amazon. It will be published on October 26th on Amazon and Ingram Spark. Audiobooks will be available on Audible and Find-A-Voice.

It all begins on an ordinary day when Sally spies a pair of shoes walking – without any feet! Curious, she follows them to a mysterious red door with the word Imagination etched above it. Beyond its threshold, Sally discovers a fantastical world of creatures living out their dreams:

A tender-hearted rabbit who loves long blingy gowns and singing opera. A shirty mole who believes he’s too smart to bear other’s company. A snail who floats through the stars and the joyful dancing Gollyphants who make the Rainbow Lake’s waves shake. And threatening them all; the hungry fog monster who steals hopes and dreams.

Full of wonderfully odd characters and unexpected twists and turns, this enchanting tale is a must-have for every child’s library.

Love is a Choice

Nicole Collazo and Michael Collazo Author Interview

Cozy Critters on the Ark follows a little mouse living in peaceful solitude who goes on an exciting adventure on Noah’s Ark and learns the meaning of friendship and happiness. What was the inspiration for your story?

My husband and I created the Cozy Critter world because of our love for small pets that make a lasting impact in one’s lives. Our guinea pig, Cooper, means a lot to us and we wanted to create a world where small creatures can make huge impacts in things and people around them. Kids can sometimes feel like they’re small and they don’t matter but our story hopefully teaches them that they do matter and their acts of kindness can change others and themselves.

The art in this book is fantastic, really bringing the story to life. What was the art collaboration process like with illustrator Michael Collazo?

Working with my husband was an absolute privilege and honor. We learned a lot about our marriage and working together as a team. Michael is a unique artist because he doesn’t use any image references when he illustrates and everything you see in our book comes from his heart. In this book, he would draw the images first and then we would both add words to it, which is normally the opposite of the story writing process. This made it so that the illlustrations became the primary focus and our story weaved in and out of them. Michael has never taken an art class in his life. He is truly a unique artist and I pale in comparison to him and have a more realistic art style.

What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?

Love is a choice and every day is full of choices to make. We can strive to make this world a better place by loving people just as they are, which is a biblical principle my husband and I try to live out daily and requires an internal decision of us even when it might be hard. Rufi has his flaws by taking on tasks harder than he expects, not asking for help, and letting his introverted nature create a barrier between him and people who might enjoy him. The Cozy Critters accept him just as he is and we did not want to change him- he is still a guarded little workaholic mouse. But he does learn a thing or two about the value of loving others and letting one be loved in return. Friends can easily become family, especially if you did not have a traditional family upbringing and this book also has friendship, belonging, kindness, and displacement themes.

When will book two be available? Can you give us an idea of where that book will take readers?

Our next book in the Cozy Critter Storytime Series will focus around Henrietta, the bossy go-getter bunny. She will want to take over the Christmas planning and readers will see what happens when her long list of action items gets fulfilled. Although she is a bit of a control freak, she is just as fragile as Rufi and has endearing qualities we will be developing. The book, Henrietta Ruins Christmas, will be released in the Fall of 2025.

YOU are about to embark on an adventure with the world’s greatest friends, the Cozy Critters! Join us for the first heartwarming story in the Cozy Critters Storytime Series, which takes place alongside the biblical record of Noah’s Ark. The events that transpire will leave you saying…

“Why am I cheering and clapping for a mouse?!”

Rufi the workaholic mouse has friends but lives a solitary life. When he isn’t working hard, he enjoys reading a good book with a nice cup of coffee. His world is quickly turned upside down when he finds himself thrust into an adventure alongside new companions. When Rufi is displaced from his solitary treehouse, he may just discover that sharing the world with unexpected friends is what brings him true happiness!

Join Rufi as he is caught up in the action aboard Noah’s Ark and learns that any place can be a home if it is filled with love. This whimsical tale demonstrates a simple truth which is held dear by its authors, “Love never fails.” This book was created to support connection between children and the adults who are teaching them about life. While it contains fictional elements and absurdities, it aims to provide children with examples of belonging and kindness and demonstrate how friendship can rescue you from life’s biggest storms.

We understand that children navigate many of the same kinds of problems as adults, including finding ourselves in new living situations, situational family dynamics, and unexpected displacement. This book encourages children to broaden their ideas about belonging and helps them to see that they are surrounded by others who are willing to share their world.

Note: Side effects of this book may include wearing a red shirt, being a better friend, and cozy behavior.

Pigs Have Wings

Pigs Have Wings, by Kathleen Welton, is a charming and whimsical tale that follows Miz Peg, a pig with big dreams of dancing and singing. Despite the challenges that come with being a pig, Miz Peg is determined to pursue her passions. With the support and encouragement of her friends, she discovers that she is capable of much more than she initially believed.

What I love most about this book is its uplifting message about perseverance and the importance of having a support system. Miz Peg’s journey is a heartwarming reminder that even when things seem difficult, having the right people around you can make all the difference. The story is filled with positivity and optimism, making it a delightful read for both children and adults alike. The writing is engaging and accessible, with a rhythmic quality that adds to the book’s charm. The language is simple yet effective, allowing readers of all ages to connect with the story and its characters.

The illustrations, by Chau Pham, perfectly complement the narrative, bringing Miz Peg and her world to life with vibrant colors and expressive details. One of the standout aspects of Pigs Have Wings is how it subtly weaves in lessons about self-belief and the power of community. Miz Peg’s dreams might seem far-fetched for a pig, but the story shows that with determination and the encouragement of friends, even the most unlikely goals can be achieved. It’s a beautiful message that resonates well with readers and leaves a lasting impression.

Pigs Have Wings is a delightful and inspiring book that would be perfect for young readers who love stories about animals and dreams coming true. It’s also a great choice for parents and educators looking for a positive and engaging story to share with children. Kathleen Welton has crafted a lovely tale that reminds us all of the importance of dreaming big and supporting one another along the way.

A Happy and Uplifting Character

A.M. Berkowitz Author Interview

Gigglet, The Happy Little Piglet Goes To The Beach, follows an energetic piglet on an adventure exploring the beach. What inspired your story?

I love everything about the beach and Maui happens to be my favorite island with some of the most magnificent beaches in all the world. When the Maui fires befell this beautiful island and caused such devastation, I felt this book come to life with every fiber of my being. I knew immediately that my sweet little Gigglet would be on my favorite beach in Maui ‘getting her giggle on’ and living her best life. Thus my book’s dedication “To the forever beauty of Maui, my island of inspiration”. Gigglet is such a happy and uplifting character that even on the worst of days, it’s hard not to smile when looking at her, reading about her adventures, or even just having a casual conversation about her being the happiest little piglet in all the land.” Maui will always be beautiful and will always be a symbol of hope, strength, and love.

Gigglet has a wonderful time exploring all the different things at the beach. What is one of your favorite memories of going to the beach, either as a child or as an adult?

I didn’t get to see my first beach until I was 15 years old when my family moved to South TX near South Padre Island. I will never forget that day…The sound of the ocean waves crashing along the shoreline, the warm sand and crushed seashells under my feet, the flocks of seagulls hovering above in search of food, and the sounds of families laughing, splashing, and playing in the water. Everything about that day was magical, exhilarating, and unlike anything I had ever experienced. The beach is the perfect place for me to lose my mind and find my soul.

What is the most valuable piece of advice you’ve been given about writing?

Always write 100% from your heart and follow your gut. Don’t listen to naysayers. Don’t force anything. Writing should always be about ease, flow, and allowing.

Where is Gigglet off to next, and when will that story be available?

I’m so excited to share the third children’s picture book in the Gigglet series! Our giggly little piglet is off to summer camp to have a fun adventure with two of her best pals Dandy and Waddles. They enjoy summer camp to its fullest embracing the fun and activities that wait around every corner! Gigglet The Happy Little Piglet Goes to Summer Camp is available now in hardback and ebook and also has an activity/coloring book that can be purchased as a companion to the book. All three books can be purchased on Amazon.

The Gigglet series can also be accessed via my new website.

A Positive Role Model

Deborah Carter Martin Author Interview

In Hunnie Bunny’s Special Gift, an industrious rabbit with a special gift to share and her hard-working forest friends prepare for the long winter ahead. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

Since the first three books (Hunnie Bunny’s Garden, Hunnie Bunny’s Garden Mystery and Hunnie Bunny’s Christmas Wish) take place in the spring, summer and winter, I wanted to introduce a fall theme where I could show how the woodland animals in the story prepare for the cold months. For example, Mr. Frog hibernates, so he doesn’t appear in Hunnie Bunny‘s Christmas Wish. In this book, Hunnie Bunny’s fur gets thicker, and both she and Mr. Squirrel store food so they won’t go hungry when their food supply is hard to find or non-existent.

Do you have a favorite character? Is there one whose dialogue and traits are especially fun to craft?

Hunnie Bunny is my favorite because, through her, I can present a positive role model for young children by showing her compassionate, helpful nature and loyal friendships. Also, her leadership and problem-solving skills are fun to integrate into the stories, making her personality even more appealing.

What is one thing you hope young readers take away from Hunnie Bunny’s latest adventure?

I hope young children will see how important and special it is to consider the needs of others, and be willing and happy to share, especially with those who are less fortunate.

Do you have more books planned for this series? If so, where can readers expect to see it take your colorful cast of characters?

Yes, indeed! There are eleven books in the Hunnie Bunny series so far. In the upcoming stories, Hunnie Bunny will encounter fairies, new neighbors, a magic flute, a unicorn, and a daring escape. She and her friends will also share in a new beginning and a rescue. The next book in the series, Hunnie Bunny and the Lost Fairy, is currently being illustrated and should be released sometime in August. A list of future titles can be found on my website:  www.simplereadsbooks.com.

Even though the Hunnie Bunny books have been written sequentially, they can be read in any order. The purpose of these stories is to offer some education and learning in an entertaining way, while encouraging imaginative play. My journey thus far has brought me so much joy and happiness knowing that children all over the world are enjoying the adventures of Hunnie Bunny and her friends.
