Words And Labels Can Destroy

Pamela Pech Author Interview

“Eye to Eye, Heart to Heart” follows a misunderstood dog and an incarcerated man who cross paths and discover a chance at redemption and the transformative power of connection. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?”

The awareness of several circumstances caused the writing of this book. As I learned of our rescue dog’s history with “Pups on Parole,” it just so happened that one of my dearest friends had also been a doctor in the same prison system for 30 years. When asked what she believed was the percent of prisoners she worked with (thousands) that could not be “reached” or helped, she said 5%. It made me realize the immense number of prisoners who, like Gabbi, felt trapped in a label. At the same time, I became aware of stories of foster children, abused children, one of whom (9 years old) tried to hang herself with her jump rope…who also wondered…why am I back in this situation? Am I “bad?” The collective stories of how words and labels can destroy a life were the setup for the story.

The theme of looking beyond societal labels is strong in the book. Can you share a personal experience that influenced your perspective in this matter?

As a teenager I volunteered to work with Cuban refugee children coming into the United States without their parents. I heard their heartbreaking stories and felt their sadness. At my high school I overheard comments of several students calling them derogatory names. I felt that if people could only “know” an individual and the stories behind each person, they would not be so quick to ridicule, shame, or label them.

Joan Zander Millard’s illustrations are fantastic. How did the collaboration process work between the two of you?

Joan lives in Wisconsin and I in Nevada…but our collaboration was close and personal. From day one, we were a team. We discussed many times how her pictures told the story just as much if not more than my words. They were what the kids would look at and remember. She has an amazing way of feeling the words and creating the picture she felt while reading. We wanted to make sure the “eyes” sent an important message, …given the title of the book. Numerous times she would, on her own, redraw the picture as she felt adjustments would tell the story with more impact. She is an amazing, sensitive artist and I am eternally grateful to have worked with her and hope to continue doing so in the future.

What is the next book that you are working on and when will it be available?

There are two ideas I am working on. One is a continuation of Gabbi’s story as she finds herself in a “forever” home… how we feel doesnt change overnight – it changes when we finally believe in ourselves. It takes continuous love and reinforcement. The second story is relevant to being in Nevada, where we have hundreds of wild mustangs not having a chance to live their full potential. Learning of the amazing healing power of horse therapy for adults and children alike, my intention is to write about the value of every living being…through the eyes of animals and nature with parallel themes as in Eye to Eye, Heart to Heart. I hope to have them ready by the end of 2024.

Eye to Eye, Heart to Heart is a heartwarming story based on the real lives of a prisoner and a rescue dog who both feel extremely sad and trapped in their own personal cages. When they work together in Pups on Parole, a program for dog training in prisons, they each find their second chance. Ben and Gabbi go from cell mates to soul mates as they show us how honest work, an effort to learn, and a deep love can outshine any past “mistakes.”

Chess Fiction For Kids

Victoria Winifred Author Interview

“No Time for Halloween: The Frankenstein-Dracula Defense” follows the Cozy Chess Club’s desperate race against time to solve the mystery of the missing chess clock so as not to let their epic Halloween celebration be ruined. What was the inspiration for the setting and setup of your story?

When I first felt the inspiration to incorporate chess into my own classroom, I was observing children play the game at a colleague’s afterschool club. It seemed fitting to choose that moment as the inspiration for the name and setting of my new series, The Cozy Chess Club Mysteries. Also, my own chess club location was indeed quite cozy, as I provided two couches, bouncy balls, and various creature comforts and treats in my classroom.

As is my ongoing goal when writing chess fiction for kids, the setting is always in some way immersed in chess, but the story stands on its own and does not require chess knowledge. However, towards the end of this book, I do teach a quick Halloween-themed chess opening (the “opening” is a short series of moves to begin a chess game) to add extra enjoyment for my readers.

When it comes to the story setup, all students have a strong attachment to their classroom belongings and special activity items. In this case, a specific piece of equipment goes missing at a highly inconvenient time, providing a high-stakes dramatic beginning of a mystery to which young children can relate.

The characters Jasmine, Dondre, Abbie, and Zack each have unique traits. Can you share some insights into your inspiration for these characters?

I thoroughly enjoyed experiencing these characters spring to life as I wrote this book. Each child possesses multiple traits inspired by the countless students I have known throughout the years. There is the endearing spontaneity of Dondre, the emotionally resilient Abbie, the wise-beyond-her-years Jasmine, and the dependable and unassumingly self-assured Zack. I adore the camaraderie they cultivate as a team, as well as the various dynamics that unfold when they engage one-to-one. Writing these books rejuvenates my connection to the classroom, allowing me to relish the company of my students once again.

What message or lessons do you hope young readers take away from this installment of the Cozy Chess Club Mysteries series?

Firstly, I hope young readers thoroughly enjoy reading the mystery from start to finish. Additionally, I hope the regard, friendship, and support exhibited by the students toward one another, as well as the mutual respect between the teacher and students serve as an inspiration to individuals of all ages. Another objective of this book is to encourage schools to incorporate chess into their activities. Chess plays a vital role in helping the characters in the story solve the mystery by promoting logical and analytical thinking. Lastly, should readers feel motivated to try out the Halloween chess opening and even acquire their own chess set after reading this book, that would check off another box on my wish list!

What is the next book that you are working on and when will it be available?

I am currently working on the second book in the Cozy Chess Club Mysteries series, which will take place the day before winter holidays begin. As you might guess, that day brings a new mystery and much drama for the club members! Abbie’s Angel: A Christmas Puzzle should be available by November 1, 2023. A special holiday-related chess strategy will also be included.

This book is a valuable resource for parents seeking to introduce their children to the practice of prayer. Acknowledging that the traditional vocabulary might be challenging, Abraham skillfully dissects each line of the prayer into simpler words. This approach allows children to grasp the prayer’s significance, facilitating a meaningful connection with their parents and active participation in prayer rituals. Enhancing the book’s appeal are its vibrant illustrations. These visuals not only captivate readers but also celebrate the rich diversity among God’s children. With each turn of the page, a multitude of characters come to life, serving as a visual testament to the unity that threads through the essence of spirituality.

The Lord’s Prayer for Children, by Claire Abraham, merits a prominent place on any child’s bookshelf. Beyond simplifying a sacred prayer for young readers, it fosters an understanding of faith and its personal connection. Being The Best You

Christal Majestic Author Interview

Ruby the Emotional Stingray follows a stingray family who, together, teach and learn how to manage their emotions. What was the inspiration for your story?

As an adult, I have struggled with understanding and processing my emotions, and I’ve always said I wish I would’ve had a way to learn this sooner. After my grandfather passed away, I was at the beach by myself, watching the sun come up, and I finally decided that I was going to be the one to create such a book. If I could help just one child learn and understand their emotions, what causes them, and how to control them that’s the difference I want to make.

Children are often fascinated by aquariums and all the different sea life in the ocean. What made you choose a Stingray for your main character?

I have always been drawn to aquariums myself, so much so that it is my goal to visit every aquarium. I came up with Ruby when I was at the beach last year. I got up every morning before the sun came up to welcome the day and spend time with the animals. every morning I would walk the beach and I would see the same baby stingray every morning. I would sit and watch it, and that’s when I knew I had to finally start my dream of writing a book. Stingrays are amazing creatures, and it seemed very fitting. Stingrays have always been my favorite.

What were some educational aspects that were important for you to include in this children’s book?

My main goal was to give tools that would be easy to remember but strong enough to make a difference. Emotions can have a huge impact on your day-to-day life, and having that outlet and understanding can make a major difference.

Is this the first book in the series? If so, when is the next book coming out, and what can your fans expect in the next story?

Yes, this is the first book in the series but not the last by far! I expect the next book will be out before Thanksgiving of this year. Right now, there is a journal that goes with the lessons that Ruby has learned that children can use to put these tools to use. The next book will cover some very important topics essential to learn at a young age such as self-love, being the best you, and other topics that will help make kids feel like they are not alone. It will give them easy tools that will have a positive impact on their growth.

A Star-Dusted Feat

Patricia Bossano Author Interview

Cuentan Mis Estrellas takes young readers on a journey into the cosmos to learn about how constellations influence our personalities and destinies. Why is this an important topic to teach to children?

Astrology has been a favorite topic of mine since I was very young—I love my horoscope sign! (Aquarius). The fact that thousands of years ago, humanity had the wisdom and patience to observe the heavens, map out the constellations, and pinpoint their influence over the earth and its inhabitants, is a star-dusted feat that has shaped minds since the beginning of time. Cuentan mis Estrellas introduces young readers to that vast, ancient world, in a relatable, whimsical way.

How did you approach writing about zodiac signs, ruling planets, elemental affiliations, and how they relate to birthdates in a manner that would appeal to and be understood by children?

There is plenty of information out there on astrology, the zodiac, horoscopes, etc., but my most trusted source is The Secret Language of Birthdays by Gary Goldschneider and Joost Elffers. It contains “personology profiles for each day of the year”. Cuentan mis Estrellas identifies each sign (dates, elements, constellations, etc.) and highlights a couple of the main traits with a fanciful verse and lively illustration.

What were some goals you set for yourself as a writer in this book?

As ever, my goal in writing is to amuse and provide an escape. Cuentan mis Estrellas was a challenge because each sign included only a short verse. I’m not a poet, so as a writer of prose, condensing large amounts of information into mere sentences with a degree of musicality, was difficult, but after various re-writes, I think each page is bound to put a starry smile on the young reader’s face.

Is this the first book in the series? If so, when is the next book coming out, and what topics will the next book cover?

Alas, Cuentan mis Estrellas, is not a series. I do have an unrelated project coming out in December 2023. It is the translation into Spanish of Cradle Gift, book 2 in my Faerie Legacy Series. The new book is entitled: Un Don de Cuna.

Oliver the Oyster and the Lost Lab

Understanding friendship is a crucial lesson for children as it aids in the development of their social skills. An exemplary illustration of this concept can be found in Oliver the Oyster and the Lost Lab, by Jared Auchter. The story opens with Oliver’s playful escapades on the seashore, where he encounters Mac, a Labrador retriever who has lost his way. Mac strayed from home earlier in the day while pursuing a rabbit and found himself disoriented. The story unfolds with Oliver and his companions deciding to assist Mac in locating his family by searching various locations in town. This endeavor leads them on an engaging and enlightening journey.

J.B. Auchter’s narrative masterfully blends entertainment with meaningful lessons for young readers. One particularly appealing aspect of the story is the diverse cast of characters. Oliver’s friends include Cathy the Crab, Miriah the Mermaid, and Clara the Clam. Their ingenuity in covertly exploring the town adds a little bit of intrigue to this children’s narrative. The scenarios they encounter are lighthearted, and their ability to adapt to unforeseen circumstances with humor will appeal to young readers.

The story also delves into the lives of Mac’s owners and the townspeople, contributing depth to the storyline. Auchter expertly captures the essence of the settings and characters’ emotions through vivid descriptions. The interactions between Oliver and his friends exemplify values like unity and collaboration, serving as positive examples for young readers. Persistence in the pursuit of goals is a central theme, reinforced by the characters’ unwavering determination. The inclusion of colorful illustrations and actual photos of Wellfleet is a welcome addition, providing an alternative perspective to the narrative.

Oliver the Oyster and the Lost Lab stands as an ideal reading choice for children seeking both an enjoyable story and an exploration of the significance of friendship. J.B. Auchter’s narrative craftsmanship and the valuable life lessons embedded within the tale make it a worthwhile addition to any young reader’s collection.
