Death or Volentus: Macabre Masquerade
Posted by Literary Titan

Death or Volentus: Macabre Masquerade, by David V. Mammina, is a dark fantasy tale filled with necromancers, undead armies, and high-stakes political intrigue. The story follows Volentus, a powerful necromancer ruling over a bleak land called Edengard, and his interactions with other factions in a world filled with rivalries, magic, and deep secrets. Volentus is at the heart of a macabre game, facing threats from kingdoms and individuals alike. The novel sets the stage with battles, betrayals, and an eerie atmosphere that constantly hovers over the storyline. The key tension lies between Volentus and various factions, especially as he faces a pending summit where political and magical powers will collide.
The writing is heavy on detail, immersing readers into a world that feels vividly crafted, but at times, it can be dense. Mammina’s strength lies in his ability to evoke haunting imagery. Whether it’s a necromancer’s undead army or the ruins of Edengard, the setting is always atmospheric. The prose is rich with long passages of descriptive text that I feel sometimes slow down the narrative’s momentum. However, these passages contribute to great world-building within a fascinating narrative.
One thing that really stands out is how the novel delves into the psychological and emotional turmoil of its characters. Volentus isn’t just a power-hungry necromancer; he’s haunted by past decisions and relationships, particularly his complex history with Malkira, a priestess and former lover. The moments where Volentus grapples with his isolation and the consequences of his actions bring a depth that grounds the otherwise fantastical elements. I appreciated how the novel explored his internal conflict and didn’t just paint him as a stereotypical villain. A scene where he sits in front of the fire, reflecting on his power and the fear he instills, felt particularly poignant. The dynamics between different factions, like the Koralins and the Apparatum, are intriguing, but I believe they can occasionally impact the clarity of the narrative. While fascinating and well-developed, side stories centered around characters like Dragan and Alicent are engaging but sometimes distract from the book’s central point.
Death or Volentus: Macabre Masquerade is perfect for those who love dark fantasy with intricate political intrigue. Fans of necromancy, morally complex characters, and rich world-building will enjoy this novel. It’s a book that requires patience and attention to detail, but the payoff is a richly woven, eerie tale that lingers long after you’ve turned the last page.

Pushing the Boundaries and Raising the Stakes
Posted by Literary_Titan

Death or Volentus follows a vampire and necromancer who are nemesis who join forces to rescue a woman from the hands of a malevolent queen. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?
I was always intrigued by the idea of a supernatural detective who could raise the dead to obtain the answers to various crimes, whether they be from the deceased victim or the criminal. However, the danger of such a figure turning rogue and raising the dead to enact his/her designs would always be a concern, such as we saw here with Volentus. My overarching thought was: Wouldn’t it be interesting to read a story where the villain must rescue the hero this time – and that hero being the person who put that villain in check? Each character involved would be somewhat conflicted, making for an exciting drama. Adding in the vampire who must rely on Volentus to save the heroine he loves creates that perfect formula.
I find the world you created in this novel brimming with possibilities. Where did the inspiration for the setting come from, and how did it change as you were writing?
First, I needed to think of a place brimming with peril to set the stage for the crux of the plot. The only reason our forces would ever consider employing the aid of the hero’s nemesis would be to navigate a realm too dangerous for anyone else except for a villainous figure, in this case, Volentus, who had expertise in all things dead and undead. Establishing a steampunk-like city where the governing body is somewhat corrupt in its own way proved to be a jarring contrast to the dreaded Land of Wilted Roses. A gilded dystopian city parallel to a dark, forbidden land of doom. It just reads great.
What intrigues you about the horror and paranormal genres that led you to write this book?
I’ve always enjoyed pushing the boundaries and raising the stakes of what dark fantasy and horror could be for readers who have read and experienced so much of it already. Making these elements feel real, yet magical, pulls us into the world before we even know we’ve become invested. I want my readers to feel like they’re in the story, that they’re a part of the action. The haunting themes make for a great setting for characters who have relatable motivations. Every reader wants to escape in fiction. So, I endeavor to provide them with an escape they won’t soon forget.
Will there be a follow-up novel to this story? If so, what aspects of the story will the next book cover?
What a fortunate question. I have already begun planning the sequel and have settled on a great new setting for our characters where the previous tale left off. Be on the lookout for Death or Volentus: Macabre Masquerade before the Summer arrives! Intrigue abounds when a king invites Volentus and other powerful figures to a summit for peace disguised as a masquerade ball where everyone involved suspects a trap.

Death or Volentus
Posted by Literary Titan

In Death or Volentus, readers are plunged into a thrilling narrative where Dragan Cellis, a psychic vampire, and Volentus, a necromancer, forge an unlikely alliance. Set against the backdrop of the Land of Wilted Roses, this dark fantasy tale unfolds with Dragan needing Volentus’ expertise to rescue his beloved, Alicent Vale, from the clutches of the malevolent Queen Malkira of Tenebris. The queen’s ambition to amass an army of ‘brands’ – individuals with unique powers – by converting them through torture and manipulation forms the crux of the story.
The dynamic between the characters is compelling. Dragan, initially driven by love, must confront the physical dangers of their mission and the ethical implications of their actions. Volentus, on the other hand, undergoes a transformation. His initial desire for revenge, stemming from a past encounter with Alicent that led to his imprisonment, evolves as he begins to see her in a new light. The narrative deftly illustrates how exposure to Alicent’s suffering alters his perspective, shifting his motivations from vengeance to protection. The plot thickens when it’s revealed what Malkira’s true intentions are. This development elevates the stakes, introducing a sense of urgency and danger as the characters find themselves trapped and facing an overwhelming threat.
The book engages readers from the outset with its action-oriented opening, quickly establishing the central conflict and the unique world it inhabits. The interplay between Alicent, Dragan, and Volentus adds depth to the narrative, ensuring that readers remain invested in their fates. The story’s pacing is well-managed, balancing action with character development and leading to a series of twists that keep the reader eagerly turning the pages.
This novel is a compelling read for fans of dark fantasy and supernatural thrillers. Its blend of action, character dynamics, and a richly imagined world makes it a standout in the genre. The concise nature of the story ensures a fast-paced and eventful experience, making it an excellent choice for those looking for an engaging and immersive narrative.

The Angels of Resistance
Posted by Literary Titan
The Angels of Resistance, by David V. Mammina, is a dark fantasy novel that follows Michael Miuriell as he journeys to conquer the darkness. Miuriell learns he is evil reincarnate, the second coming of a demon lord called Abaddon, and seeks to destroy the demon plague without losing himself in the process.
Michael Miuriell is known as a peacemaker throughout the kingdoms and yields great power. He commands the Staff of Truth and uses his telekinetic powers for good. The story begins with Miuriell stranded at sea after his beloved home of Pommel is destroyed by a demon plague. Michael is taken aboard a ship, headed for Tinaria, and he must warn the King before their kingdom faces the same demonic evil. Throughout the novel, Miuriell bands together the finest warriors the kingdoms have ever known, as well as another sorcerer to defeat the demon plague. Miuriell, along with Princess Shina, have ties yet to be uncovered to the demons they wish to destroy. To defeat the darkness, they will have to overcome the evil within and embrace their inner selves.
Author David Mammina has a very descriptive writing style. Most of the novel gives great imagery and it feels as if you are experiencing each battle with the characters. The story is fast paced, and the plot unfolds steadily throughout. The book is an interesting blend of supernatural demons, medieval fantasy with and sword and sorcery.
While I enjoyed the story, I felt that there was a large amount of characters introduced. So many people spring up throughout the story that they are hard to keep track of. When reading I focused on a small group of characters as they had more development and were a major part of the storyline throughout.
The Angels of Resistance is a riveting dark fantasy adventure. Author David Mammina twists the stereotypical demonic storyline into a gripping fantasy. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys epic fantasy novels with compelling characters overcoming darkness.
