Hope is Our Story

Jessica Goldmuntz Stokes Author Interview

In Seeking Clarity in the Labyrinth: A Daughter’s Journey Through Alzheimer’s, you share your family’s experiences following your mother’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis, how you navigated her care, and the grief of losing her to this disease. Why was this an important book for you to share?

When it was clear we were well into our journey with Alzheimer’s, and my Uncle and Aunt passed (complications with Parkinson’s & Alzheimer’s) I started writing to heal myself. As I shared it with my Dad, it became clear our story may be able to help others. The journey of losing a loved one includes so many emotions–fear, anger, pain, sadness, love, grief. My hope is our story can help others in their journey.

I appreciated the candid nature with which you told your family’s story. What was the hardest thing for you to write about?

Much of the story was written in relatively ‘real-time.’ As I read it now, I am not sure if I would have been able to capture some of the raw, intense quality of my writing. Her passing ended up being this beautiful gift for both myself and my dad. If I went back and wrote it now, I do not know if it would have translated. This, however, was not the hardest part–those sections in the middle, when I was angry with her and the situation…those parts were hard to write about.

What is a common misconception you feel people have about caring for a family member suffering from Alzheimer’s?

Too often we believe we have ‘lost’ our loved ones. Yes, in many ways they are lost or ‘gone’ but, truly, we have just lost a version of them. Their essence is still there. They may not talk or walk, and often our loved ones may be angry or even nasty, but they are still human. They are still our people. If we are able to remember that, remember them in their entirety, we can help care for them more easily. If we can meet our loved ones where they are, we are truly seeing them.

What is one thing you hope your readers take away from your experience?

I hope my readers laugh, cry and embrace the sweet and fragile joy of life, in its raw, sometimes nasty and tragic ways. Life is beautiful, in all the ways we are able to see it.

Protecting Mama: Surviving the Legal Guardianship Swamp

Léonie Rosenstiel’s Protecting Mama: Surviving the Legal Guardianship Swamp is a poignant exploration of love, loss, and the relentless pursuit of justice. When her mother falls victim to the ravages of Alzheimer’s disease, Léonie faces an arduous battle against a complex and often opaque legal system. A court-appointed guardian, shrouded in secrecy, becomes a formidable barrier between Léonie and her mother’s wishes. At the heart of this compelling narrative is the profound bond between a daughter and her mother. Léonie’s unwavering determination to honor her mother’s desire to share their story highlights their unbreakable connection. As she navigates a maze of legal and ethical challenges, the author provides a candid look at the devastating impact of Alzheimer’s on families.

Beyond the personal tragedy, the book serves as a scathing critique of the guardianship system. Rosenstiel exposes a framework often more focused on control and financial gain than on the well-being of its wards. This critique extends to the hospitality industry, where vulnerable individuals and their families can become targets of exploitation. Through Léonie’s experiences, readers gain valuable insights into the importance of financial planning and meticulous record-keeping. These practical lessons are crucial for safeguarding the future of loved ones and underscore the necessity for compassionate care and companionship for the elderly. Protecting Mama is a powerful story of resilience and the human spirit. Léonie’s tenacity in challenging the status quo is truly inspirational. The book provides a significant perspective on a complex issue that affects countless families.

I highly recommend Protecting Mama to anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by families with elderly members, the intricacies of the legal system, and the importance of advocating for those who cannot advocate for themselves. While the narrative is intense at times, it is essential reading for anyone interested in elder care, legal reform, and the human condition.

Enough About Me

Richard Liu is an excellent storyteller. He eloquently and enthusiastically tells his story in Enough About Me: The Unexpected Power of Selflessness. His narration style is exceptional, with the reader getting to virtually live through his life. Richard Liu tells of his experiences like they happened yesterday. The words he uses to describe close relations, phrases he uses when describing events, objects, or people he has worked with, and his general tone make you want to interact with him in real life. In his beautifully written book, Richard Liu documents his life, the journeys he has taken, his highs, lows, good times, challenges, and everything in between.

At the start of the book, Richard Liu takes readers back to the days he worked with Channel News Asia, a significant period in his life. Liu talks about his father and his relationship with other family members. Reading about someone’s life is mesmerizing, as one gets to view life and its experiences in a different light. The author made the reading more attractive by including personal encounters without filtering out what he stumbled upon. The authenticity displayed by Richard Liu is charming and gets the reader excited to move to the next chapter.

More than a dozen personal stories are shared in this intimate book, with life lessons and stories that readers can relate to. The most touching story is about Richard Liu’s father, his battle with Alzheimer’s, and how readers can draw lessons on caregiving and compassion from the story. Richard Liu’s selflessness can be seen in more than one instance. I applaud the author for never giving up on his father and being the caring, loving, and hardworking son every parent strives to have. From this single story, I also learned to be grateful for good health. Having your body function as it should without complications is not something to take for granted. Finally, we also understand that family is essential from Richard Liu’s story.

Enough About Me: The Unexpected Power of Selflessness is filled with inspiring stories and motivation to keep moving. This biographical look into Richard Liu’s life will inspire readers to look beyond themselves and see the good they can do.

The Caregiver’s Journey

The Caregiver's Journey: A Roadmap for Navigating Your Path by [Pamela S. Showalter, Raylene Bell]

The Caregiver’s Journey: A Roadmap for Navigating Your Path, by Pamela S. Showalter and Raylene Bell, follows Margene Saxon Bell’s descent into dementia and her caregivers’ difficult journey through it. The book details a five-year path through the illness and through the numerous ups and downs, all-the-while giving insight into what caregivers do and how difficult dealing with such illnesses can be, especially on a psychological level.

Showalter and Bell write in a practical and descriptive way. The book is written from Pamela’s point of view, and she never forgets to give readers effective advice on how to look after their loved one or how to find the issue’s origin. All of it is explained in the chapter takeaway and more in detail in the appendix.

As a reader keen on details, I appreciated the appendix at the end of the book, which focuses on important aspects concerning caretakers and caregivers. This will definitely be helpful for anyone in the same situation as the writers.

The aim of this book is to give aid to anyone that might find themselves with an ill loved one who needs medical care. The anecdotes within this book are touching, but the book does a fantastic job of providing readers with ample advice, tips, and inspiration.

The Caregiver’s Journey is an excellent guide on eldercare. What I liked best about this book is that is provides a plethora of actionable advice and tips, where other books speak in generalities this book gets into the details. I also liked how the books suggestions are coupled with guidance developed through real world experience. With its emotional charge and practical advice for readers, this book will prove to be a quick and touching read.
