Through vivid storytelling, Mecham takes readers on a journey through his tumultuous childhood, marked by abuse from drug-addicted parents and the harsh realities of a loveless household. At the tender age of 18, he was sent away to support his family, yet he remained steadfast and true to himself, overcoming the adversities that life threw his way.

Mecham’s courage in sharing his story is commendable, and his survival tale is one from which we can all draw valuable lessons. Find Peace With the Present

Rachel Vogel Author Interview

Remember Me is a celebration of your mother’s life honoring her memory in the form of stories that shine light on her strength, humor, and incredible resilience. Why was this an important book for you to write?

This was my most important book to date because the message of love and remembrance is crucial to me. Throughout life, we meet many people. Some become friends; others become close like family (or closer). It is these people who have helped shape a piece of us. Even though no new memories can be made, remembering the joy and happiness of the time we had is one of the best ways to turn our grief into strength. It is hard and some days it can feel impossible but we will be comforted by our memories and continue to make new memories with other loved ones, friends, and within our community.

I appreciated the candid nature with which you told your mother’s story. What was the hardest thing for you to write about?

This journal is to honor my Mother’s memory after her passing in December of 2021. That was the hardest Christmas of my life. It was during that Christmas that I knew I wanted to create something that would resonate with more than just my family and friends. While all of this was hard to write and took me over two years to complete with plenty of tears and tissues, the “About my Mother” section was beyond hard. Writing about Mom not in the present or future but the past made my loss feel fresh again.

What is one thing you hope readers are able to take away from your book?

I hope readers find joy in their memories. It is my hope for every reader that they can find peace with the present and be excited for the future; even though their Mother will not be sharing new experiences by their side, a piece of her is always in their heart. A mother’s love is forever, in life and beyond.

Can we look forward to seeing more work from you soon?

We are very excited to be penning our first adult romance book with an anticipated release in 2025. This WIP (work in progress) was inspired by my cat, Coors White, an adorable black and white tuxedo kitty. He is aptly named because of his larger than body personality and tendencies that make a stiff drink sound good (or even mandatory). Inspired by some of the escape schenegains of Coors and his kitty siblings, Crazy Cat Lady Love takes you on his journey to find his owner’s true love. Will his mission turn into a dog-gone cat-astrophe? Only time will tell as Coors’ escapes become more hilarious.

Abbey’s Road

Book Review

Abbey’s Road, by Danna Schweitzer, is a heartfelt exploration of family dynamics, secrets, and the journey of self-discovery. The novel centers on Abbey, a grandmother dealing with the recent death of her husband, Albert, who left behind a significant secret that unravels throughout the story. Abbey’s life, filled with seemingly ordinary moments, takes unexpected turns as she navigates her relationships with her children and the hidden past of her late husband.

From the outset, the book captivates with its strong character development and emotional depth. Abbey is portrayed as a relatable, multidimensional character whose struggles and resilience are both poignant and inspiring. The author skillfully reveals her backstory, including her marriage to Albert and the complexities of raising his child from a previous relationship as her own. This narrative thread adds layers of intrigue and sympathy for Abbey, particularly in how she manages the delicate balance of family secrets and her own need for closure.

One of the novel’s strengths is its portrayal of familial relationships, especially the bond between Abbey and her children, Margaret, Steven, and Shelley. Each child’s reaction to Albert’s death and the revelation of his secret is unique and reflective of their individual personalities. For instance, Margaret’s struggle with her identity and the truth about her birth is deeply moving, highlighting her internal conflict and her eventual acceptance of Abbey as her true mother. This dynamic is further complicated by Steven’s pragmatic approach and Shelley’s emotional responses, making for a compelling and realistic depiction of family life.

Schweitzer’s writing style is straightforward yet evocative, drawing readers into the everyday moments that define Abbey’s existence. The author’s ability to convey the passage of time and the evolution of Abbey’s character is particularly noteworthy. Scenes such as Abbey’s solitary visit to the zoo, where she reflects on her past while observing families, underscore the themes of loneliness and longing. These moments of introspection are beautifully balanced with interactions that reveal Abbey’s resilience and her capacity for love and forgiveness.

Abbey’s Road is a touching and thought-provoking novel that will resonate with readers who appreciate stories about family, secrets, and personal growth. Schweitzer’s ability to craft believable characters and a compelling narrative makes this book a worthwhile read. It’s particularly suited for those who enjoy contemporary fiction with emotional depth and a focus on relationships. Abbey’s journey is one of courage and self-discovery, making her story both relatable and inspirational.

Curiosity and Wonder

Gel See Author Interview

With Love from Mom: The Journey of Dreams centers on a mom reassuring her daughter that she will always be there for her in life and perhaps even in dreams. What was the inspiration for your story?

The inspiration for With Love, From Mom: The Journey of Dreams comes from my own experiences as a mother to my daughter, Audrey. Since she was little, we’ve bonded over bedtime stories, and I wanted to write a story that celebrates the bond between a mother and her child. I aimed to capture the warmth and comfort of knowing that a parent’s love is constant and unwavering, both in waking moments and in dreams. It’s a love letter to my daughter and children everywhere, reminding them that they are always cherished and supported.

The art in this book is fantastic. What was the art collaboration process like with the illustrator Gail Rae Javier?

I feel incredibly fortunate to have collaborated with Gail Rae Javier. As a new author, working with her has been wonderful. She brought her own artistic vision to my words, creating whimsical, dream-like illustrations that resonate with both children and parents. Gail’s talent for capturing gentle, heartfelt, and dreamy themes was exactly what I envisioned for the book. I appreciated her artistic point of view, and each illustration beautifully complemented the narrative, conveying the emotions and adventures of the mom and daughter. Her ability to translate my words into vivid, enchanting visuals brought the story to life beyond my expectations.

What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?

There were several key ideas I wanted to convey. First and foremost, the theme of unconditional love and the strong bond between a mother and her child. I also wanted to emphasize the power of dreams and imagination, encouraging children to believe in themselves and explore the world with curiosity and wonder. Additionally, the story supports social and emotional learning (SEL), highlighting themes of love, self-worth, and emotional bonding. It’s important for me that children feel secure in their parents’ love and grow up confident in their individuality.

What is the next book that you are working on, and when will it be available?

I am currently working on a new book that continues the adventures of the girl and her bunny from With Love from Mom: The Journey of Dreams. This time, they travel around the world, learning about different cultures, respecting customs, and immersing themselves in local traditions. It combines education with whimsy, aiming to broaden young readers’ horizons and foster a love and appreciation for the world around us. I’m excited to share that it will be available next year, and I can’t wait for readers to embark on this new journey with us.

I will also be releasing two more books this year in a series called Blossomvale. Curly’s Giving Heart follows Curly the Caterpillar as he learns the importance of balance and self-care while helping his friends. Feather’s Healing Song is a touching story about dealing with loss and finding joy again. Both books explore universal themes of friendship, self-discovery, and resilience, designed to entertain and impart valuable life lessons to young readers. I’m excited to share these heartwarming tales with children and families everywhere.

Control is an Illusion

Melanie and Amanda Huggard Author Interview

In Rootbound: A Mother’s Journey, A Daughter’s Pain., you share some of the most challenging aspects of your mother-daughter relationship and the fears and traumas that preceded your amazing healing journey. What inspired you to share your story with readers?

Melanie- I wanted to help other moms avoid the mistakes I made because of fear. I also wanted to help the moms who already made those mistakes make efforts toward repairing the damage. I knew that if I shared my experience, it would only be half of the story. That’s when I asked Amanda to write the book with me. She of course said yes.

Amanda- My mom approached me with the idea and felt like the work we had done to heal ourselves and our relationship could be beneficial for others to find freedom in their own stories. We had multiple people make comments on our relationship and how they wished they had the type of connection with their mom or daughter as we did. I have always wanted to write a book and loved the idea and said yes without hesitation.

I appreciated the candid nature with which you both told your story. What was the hardest thing for you to write about?

Melanie- Chapter 6 titled Rootbound was the hardest for me. I share some heart-wrenching awakenings and losses in that chapter.

Amanda- I think the depth of vulnerability we get into throughout the book felt very scary to share with the world. You can’t take those things back once it’s out there. I was very aware of the potential backlash that may come with sharing various traumatic life experiences in such a candid way.

What is one piece of advice you wish someone had given you when you were younger?

Melanie- I wish someone would have told me about control being an illusion and taught me how to have boundaries instead.

Amanda- I wish someone had told me to take the pressure off myself and helped me understand how to do that.

What is one thing you hope readers are able to take away from your experience?

Melanie- I want the reader to know they are not alone. I hope they can take away a little bit of bravery to face the unaddressed parts of their story.

Amanda- I hope they can connect to it and find themselves in our story. And for those that do connect to it, I hope that it brings a sense of feeling seen and that they are not alone in this journey, and that restoration in parent/child relationships is possible.

Mental Illness and Its Triggers

John McCluskey Author Interview

Ogden’s Proverb follows a teenage boy enrolled in a prestigious private academy who struggles under the weight of familial expectations and self-discovery. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

I did attend such a school as a teenager, so I thought it would be a good setting and lead to a good story, and that my personal experience would lend a sense of authenticity as well. I realize the setting itself might not be familiar to everyone, but the issues Ogden faces are universal as your review points out, and I think it’s very important to see similarities among people regardless of whether their life circumstances are familiar or not. I’m hoping this is the case. Alcoholism, alienation, first love, and pressing life experiences transcend the setting and hopefully connect with all readers. And I like to think humor helps.

Ogden’s story is one that many readers will be able to relate to and see pieces of themselves in the story. Are there any emotions or memories from your own life that you put into your character’s life?

I like this question. The answer is yes, specifically as it applies to Adam. While much of the story takes on its own life as a piece of fiction, the character of Adam is very close to the truth. I had this experience while at school and it has stayed with me all my life. I wanted to keep the memory of him alive, so including him in this story not only added to the real complexities facing Ogden, but allowed me to give Adam’s life extended meaning and context. I am so delighted to be able to do this, and I hope Adam’s life touches readers much as it has mine. And this is why I like this question so much.

What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?

I wanted to thoroughly look at alcoholism and its impact upon generations, first love in all its awkwardness, alienation, and the result of familial change in one’s life, and first experience with the intimacy of death. These are large topics but they need attention as they do often happen without forewarning or the ability to prepare. How they impact a coming-of-age teenager gives lots of room to deal with them with the appropriate sensibilities, including humor. I hope these issues transcend the basic story and give a sense of the enormity of life and the imperfect way we all must deal with them, and how we grow as a result of this imperfection.

In addition, it’s important to point out that the main character Ogden begins to realize he suffers from anxiety in an understated way, but doesn’t quite know it yet, so some of his experiences with panic attacks and obsessiveness when encountering life events point to a larger theme of mental illness and its triggers. This is such an important theme – maybe the most important – as it reflects the perceived “imperfect” ways we are forced to deal with life, though there is nothing imperfect about it. I’d like to help raise the awareness of this.

What is the next book that you are working on, and when will it be available?

I am currently shifting back to poetry as that seems to be the muse right now. I never plan when the next book will come out – I just keep writing, whether prose or poetry, until I get something that looks promising. I tend to write slowly, and I don’t really believe in writer’s block. If I’m not able to write for a period of time, I’ve found it’s because I’m processing something that will eventually emerge. So I don’t care how long it takes; I have grown to greatly respect the value of quiet time and subconscious processing. If I could offer any advice to writers, it would be to write however works best for you and be unapologetic about it. What works for one does not necessarily work for another, and it’s much too easy to compare yourself to other writers and their habits and feel diminished. Do you, and don’t look back.

“With All Thy Getting, Get Understanding.” What does that even mean, a teenaged Ogden Skully pondered as he tried to make sense of his new life. And his first girlfriend, his parent’s troubling influence on him, and a tragic episode at the private prep school he had been sent to without his permission, where he knew he didn’t belong, and which sported that perplexing proverb. As an older Ogden looks back at his life and discovers through these experiences, and more, exactly when and how he became the person he would always be, he realizes just what “… Get Understanding” requires.

The Experiences of One Man

Jerry Stephen Ice Author Interview

Indian Billy Ice shares the true story of your great-great-great-grandfather and how he survived being taken by a nomadic Native American tribe in the 18th century. Why was this an important book for you to write?

As the last member of the Ice family line, I felt a profound responsibility to share the incredible life story of my ancestor, Billy Ice. My book was initially a screenplay that garnered significant acclaim, winning 28 writing contests worldwide, including two in Russia. Despite Hollywood’s recognition of my writing talent, the screenplay never made it to the big screen. However, the book has allowed me to reach a wider audience and help people understand the challenges faced by 18th-century frontiersmen.

What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?

In recent years, the colonial period has been scrutinized more critically, often through the lens of political correctness and historical revisionism. While it’s undeniable that atrocities occurred on both sides, my book offers a unique perspective by focusing on the experiences of one man, Billy Ice.

Did you find anything in your research of this story that surprised you?

I was astonished by how an eight-year-old boy could endure 11 years of unimaginable hardship without his spirit being broken. Billy was an extraordinary individual who survived indescribable horrors.

What is one thing that you hope readers take away from Indian Billy Ice?

I often remind friends and acquaintances to “honor your ancestors because history matters.” My hope is that history will once again become a key component of the educational process.

In the 18th century Appalachian frontier, an 8-year-old boy finds himself ensnared by a nomadic Indian tribe, mesmerized by the fiery hue of his family’s red hair, which they believe harbors mystical powers. Years pass, and the boy, now a teenager, manages to break free from his captors, driven by a burning desire for revenge. With each passing season, he hones his survival skills, all the while haunted by memories of his tormentors.

As he matures, the young man becomes a formidable force on the frontier, dispensing his own brand of justice to those who cross his path. Along the way, he finds himself embroiled in the conflicts of the time, serving in every war that marks his era. Despite the turmoil of battle, he never forgets his ultimate goal: to reunite with his family and carve out a life of his own.

Eventually, fate leads him back to his kin, and with them, he establishes a wilderness community, a sanctuary in the untamed lands he has come to call home. Through hardship and triumph, he remains steadfast in his commitment to protect his loved ones and uphold the values of his rugged existence.

This is the true story of my great-great-great-grandfather, William Galloway “Indian Billy” Ice.
