The inspiration for Quantum Genesis came from my fascination with the intersection of science, consciousness, and the environment. I’ve always been intrigued by the idea that a planet itself could possess awareness and agency—what if the very ground beneath us could respond to our actions? That idea, combined with concerns about ecological balance and humanity’s responsibility toward nature, became the foundation for Ghia and its relationship with Ode. The story evolved into a what-if scenario about creation, consequence, and redemption on a cosmic scale.
One thing that stands out to me in your novel is the creativity embedded in this world. What was your inspiration for creating such an imaginative world?
I wanted to create a world that felt both alien and familiar—a reflection of Earth’s potential future if we continued down a path of unchecked experimentation and environmental strain. The planet Ghia is a canvas for exploring how life might adapt and evolve under extreme conditions, blending advanced technology with an almost spiritual symbiosis between humanity and nature. The visual and atmospheric elements of Ghia were inspired by a mix of astrophysics, quantum theory, and my love for cinematic world-building, similar to how films like *Avatar* or *Interstellar* immerse audiences in otherworldly yet believable settings.
What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?
Several key themes run through Quantum Genesis—sacrifice, faith versus fear, and humanity’s fragile relationship with its environment. I wanted to explore what happens when science reaches a point where it begins to blur with spirituality, and how people respond when their entire existence is threatened. Ode’s journey from scientist to reluctant savior mirrors a larger story about growth, humility, and trust in something greater than oneself. Ultimately, it’s a story about survival, connection, and the cost of both progress and redemption.
Will there be a follow-up novel to this story? If so, what aspects of the story will the next book cover?
Yes, *Quantum Genesis* kicks off this trilogy. The second book, *Quantum Mind*, is out now (https://www.books2read.com/quantummind). The third, *Quantum Entanglement*, is in the works, and will delve further into the future. The Quantum Guild of Planets is constantly pushing the boundaries of universal mysteries, and they encounter an alien race intent on severing the bond between planets and their dominant species. This all culminates in a final showdown that could forever reshape the quantum limits of mind, matter, and destiny.

It’s a story about Ode Tillmook, a scientist on a distant planet called Ghia, who’s torn between duty and conscience. His creation, a powerful compound meant to protect civilization, ends up threatening to destroy it instead. What begins as a tale of technology gone wrong evolves into something much larger, touching on consciousness, rebirth, and humanity’s place in the universe. It’s science fiction, but it feels philosophical, even spiritual. The pacing is cinematic, with scenes that swing from tense corporate politics to moments of haunting stillness and cosmic introspection.
Hanley’s writing isn’t just descriptive, it’s alive. Each sentence is humming with curiosity and heart. Sometimes I had to stop and breathe after certain passages because they carried a quiet power. The story takes big swings with its science, talking about quantum coherence, photosynthetic energy, and living planets. Yet, what hit me hardest wasn’t the technology but the emotion beneath it. Ode’s guilt, his love for his family, and his desperation to undo what’s been done all feel painfully relatable. I liked that Hanley doesn’t hold your hand. He lets mystery sit in the room with you. A few sections got a bit heavy with scientific jargon, and I found myself rereading paragraphs just to keep up. But even then, the sense of wonder kept me going.
By the time I reached the final chapters, I was both wrecked and strangely uplifted. The story turns from destruction to renewal, and that shift, from man breaking the world to man helping it heal, felt beautifully earned. Hanley writes with a sincerity that’s rare. An Elegant Symmetry
Quantum Mind follows a brother and sister who encounter a being on a mission to Earth from over 5,000 years ago who is trying to reconnect Earth to other sentient planets. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?
I’m fascinated by anything involving science, especially quantum physics, and also ancient Irish folklore and myth. I learned about the Warrior Queen Boudicca, and I thought she was an extremely interesting character to use in this story. I also couldn’t tell this story without including some of the incredible stone monuments, like Newgrange or Stonehenge, which exist in Ireland and England. It still amazes me these various stone monuments were built almost 5000 years ago.
The science inserted in the fiction, I felt, was well-balanced. How did you manage to keep it grounded while still providing the fantastic edge science fiction stories usually provide?
I really enjoyed this part of writing Quantum Mind. The Quantum science behind this is incredibly complicated, but I really wanted the reader to be able to follow the story and not get lost in the math or complexity of the science. All the fantastic properties and abilities of quantum science are really amazing and were a tremendous amount of fun to include in this story.
What were some of the trials that you felt were important to highlight the characters’ development?
In quantum physics there is an elegant symmetry found throughout many of the different aspects of the quantum particle relationships. I wanted to bring this symmetry to many of the characters’ relationships by being twins, which can share many similar traits but can also be exact opposites. Quantum particles also have an important characteristic of the direction the particle is spinning. Being left handed, I thought it would be a great way to incorporate having different things happen when you hold a quantum stone in your left hand versus your right hand. A simple ‘shout out’ to all the lefties out there!
Where does the next book in the series take the characters?
The next book, called Quantum Entanglement, will take place on Ghia in a race to save the Quantum Guild from the destruction and enslavement by the alien Egrans. While the others are fighting the Egrans, Brian’s 10 year old son, Malcolm, discovers he controls a quantum ability to create unlimited copies of himself. Being in two places at the same time might be the key Ghia has been searching for to restore the Quantum Guild. Is Malcolm’s new ability enough to fight off the Egrans and restore the Quantum Guild? Is this the only power Malcolm has, or did he unlock an ability that could potentially destroy the whole universe?
