Strength in Motion : The Next Chapter of Stroke

Strength in Motion, the final installment in Mr. Ang’s enlightening trilogy, delves into the nexus of exercise, physical therapy, and stroke recovery. This insightful book, enriched by contributions from several experts, extends its relevance beyond stroke survivors, advocating for a universally active lifestyle.

Mr. Ang’s narrative is rooted in his personal journey of recuperating from a stroke. He presents himself as a fortunate individual blessed with access to medical facilities, a caring support network, and a community earnestly invested in his recovery. His humility, kindness, and unwavering determination resonate deeply throughout the book, offering inspiration and hope.

A particularly poignant aspect of Strength in Motion is its contrast with the experiences of those who lack such support. This disparity is skillfully highlighted, underscoring the significance of a nurturing environment in the recovery process. Dr. Shamala Thialrajah, among others who have been part of Ang’s journey, provides valuable insights and expertise on the challenges and requirements faced by stroke survivors. The book also serves as a personal reflection for the reviewer, evoking memories of a grandfather who suffered a stroke and the painful realization of the limitations faced without a supportive network. This personal connection adds a layer of emotional depth to the review, bridging the gap between Ang’s experience and the universal challenges of stroke recovery.

Strength in Motion emerges as a significant contribution to our understanding of stroke recovery, symbolizing hope and the potential for renewal even in the face of adversity.

While I Can: Finding Purpose and Legacy in a Distant Land

While I Can by Jo Dibblee is an inspirational travel memoir that documents the author and her husband’s decision to throw caution to the wind and leave their home in Canada to embark upon an adventure of a lifetime to Baja, Mexico.

What starts out as a plan to spend a winter there turns into something so much more as they fall in love with Baja, the community, and the people. While Michael pursues his dream to master kitesurfing in one of the best places on earth for the sport, Jo gets involved in fostering dogs and eventually helping set up Team Baja Humanity, a grassroots project that aims to uplift communities in need in Baja.

Their travels end up being a life-affirming journey of discovery that changes them and their lives in ways they never imagined when setting out on this epic adventure.

I absolutely loved this book. It’s gloriously optimistic and brimming with raw emotion. As Jo Dibblee takes the reader along for the ride, her writing vividly conjures up the experience of embracing the unknown and opening yourself up to life’s possibilities. The writing is top-notch, and I really enjoyed feeling part of the author’s emotional journey.

A key theme of the book is grasping life by the horns “while you can.” It is this moto that propels Jo and her husband onto their path of Baja after recent health scares put their own mortality into sharp focus. Overall, Jo’s book is full of hard-won life wisdom and is a pleasure to read.

Most things in life must be experienced and learned; there’s no shortcut or free pass. It is from these moments we know and do better, or, at the very least, become wiser. It wasn’t as though we hadn’t done our research and talked to others, but there were plenty of things we did not, or could not, know.” (p 43)

Through her words, Jo portrays the transformational effect of travel and weaves a story that is full of love not only for travel but for people, relationships, communities, and the wider world. She effectively brings her experience to life with well-written, vivid descriptions and extraordinary emotional intelligence. Her words are sure to inspire a healthy dose of wanderlust in her readers! Her commitment to other people and being of service to those in need is both touching and inspirational.

Winning: A Story of Grief and Renewal, by Harriet Hodgson, is a moving memoir that delves into the author’s intensely personal journey. Hodgson’s brave narrative offers readers a raw exploration of the emotional rollercoaster that accompanies profound loss, but it also showcases the human capacity for resilience and healing.

Hodgson’s storytelling is both heartfelt and compelling, drawing readers into her world from the very first page. Her ability to convey the depths of her grief is nothing short of remarkable, making it easy for readers to empathize with her pain and sorrow. The book’s strength lies in its authenticity. Hodgson doesn’t hold back when describing the most challenging moments of her grief. She candidly discusses the physical and emotional toll that grief takes on her, from sleepless nights to the isolation and confusion she experienced. Her willingness to share these personal experiences is both courageous and reassuring for those who may be navigating their own journeys of loss and grief.

The title, Winning, aptly reflects the resilience and determination she displays throughout the book. One of the book’s outstanding qualities is the way Hodgson weaves practical advice and insights for those dealing with grief into her personal narrative. While I enjoyed the book, I feel that there were moments when the narrative felt somewhat repetitive, and some readers may find the pacing a bit slow. While the book offers an intimate look at the author’s journey, I would have loved to have had more insight into her emotional and psychological evolution.

Winning: A Story of Grief and Renewal, by Harriet Hodgson, is a heartfelt memoir that offers a powerful portrayal of one woman’s journey through the darkest moments of her life. Hodgson’s openness about her grief and the steps she takes to reclaim her life provide valuable lessons for anyone dealing with loss and searching for hope. Understanding Psychodynamic Therapy

Jaime Grunfeld Author Interview

Aliya, The Girl From Ukraine tells the story of a young girl who escapes Russian expansionist indoctrination and seeks to emigrate to the United States. Why was this an important book for you to write?

Firstly, because it’s something going on nowadays. Unlike historical facts that are of interest to a certain segment of people, what’s going on in Ukraine is something that we all follow daily in the media. Second, because Aliya, the protagonist, is a bright intelligent woman, more mature than average girls her age, which made our sessions to be very interesting.

What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?

In each chapter there’s something that can be learned from us. I emphasize “us” because in psychoanalysis, analyst and analysand (the patient) embark together in an exploration journey. By accompanying the patient in his growth, the analyst grows together, and the sessions become richer. There’s something to be learned from both of us.

What were some goals you set for yourself as a writer in this book?

To convey to my readers an accurate portrait of what happens in therapy sessions, thus dissipating misconceptions about psychodynamic therapy.

What is one thing that you hope readers take away from Aliya, The Girl From Ukraine?

I want people to know that psychodynamic therapy is not only to treat something pathological, like debilitating anxiety or depression. Like a gym for your physical health, it keeps your emotional health in check. It helps us to understand and accept our selves, so we become prepared to face life’s challenges with much more peace of mind.
