The Mouse, the Llama and the Sheep

Rayner Tapia delivers a delightful tale in The Mouse, the Llama and the Sheep, an engaging and heartwarming story. The narrative begins with Mouse enjoying a piece of cheese when he encounters a new friend, Llama. Through their conversation, Mouse learns that Farmer Joe has brought Llama to the farm for his wool. With a spark of determination, Mouse sets out to find the sheep, believing that Llama and Sheep would make great friends since they share something in common.

Mouse’s journey across the farm introduces readers to an endearing cast of characters, including Dog, Pig, and Cow, before finally reaching Sheep. In the end, all the farm animals gather to meet Llama, and together they form a wonderful bond, showcasing the true spirit of friendship. Tapia’s storytelling is both simple and captivating, making it easy for young readers to follow.

The illustrations evoke the nostalgia of Little Golden Books, offering a visual charm that harks back to childhood memories. Children will especially enjoy the whimsical portrayal of the farm animals, such as the chicken wearing heels, which adds a playful touch to the artwork. The author skillfully weaves in the unique sounds of each farm animal, adding an interactive and engaging element that young readers will adore.

The Mouse, the Llama and the Sheep, by Rayner Tapia, beautifully imparts an important lesson: the value of friendship transcends appearances. Young readers will be enchanted by the story’s warmth and its timeless message of inclusivity and kindness. I highly recommend Tapia’s touching tale to parents or teachers looking to add that next beloved selection to their libraries.

Slinky Dinky Doo and the Razzle Dazzle Sprinkles

Slinky Dinky Doo and the Razzle Dazzle Sprinkles is a sweet and adventurous picture book about an adorable dachshund, Slinky, and his human friends, Evan and Emily. Together, they set out to solve a sprinkle mystery that threatens to ruin their favorite cupcakery’s big day. With determination and Slinky’s trusty nose, the trio explores their town, meeting charming locals and discovering that the missing sprinkles were hiding in plain sight all along.

This children’s book had me hooked from the start with its whimsical charm. Slinky’s personality shines bright, just like the book’s illustrations. The writing pulls you in with its playful energy and keeps you cheering for Slinky and his friends. The part where Slinky and his sneeze that sent sprinkles flying had me laughing.

What really stood out for me was the clever way the story teaches problem-solving and teamwork. When the florist and ice cream parlor turn out to be dead ends, the group doesn’t give up. Instead, they think of new leads and keep searching. Slinky’s sharp nose saves the day, and I loved how everyone came together to celebrate his efforts with a cupcake made just for him.

The illustrations are absolutely delightful. Mariana Ostanik did such a lovely job bringing Slinky’s world to life. The cobblestone streets, the colorful sprinkles, and Slinky’s adorable expressions all add so much warmth to the story. My favorite illustration was the one where Slinky is dreaming of playing under a cupcake rainbow—it’s just too cute to handle!

I’d recommend this book to anyone with young kids or even dog lovers who want a feel-good story to share. It’s perfect for bedtime or a cozy story time on the couch. Slinky’s adventure is fun, lighthearted, and full of heart.

Harry the Hedgehog and the Missing Pumpkin

Harry the Hedgehog and the Missing Pumpkin, by Rayner Tapia, is a charming little tale that follows Harry the Hedgehog on a Halloween morning as he wakes up, ready to enjoy his treasured pumpkin, only to find it is missing. Determined to solve the mystery of the vanished pumpkin, Harry dons his detective “hat” and ventures out, meeting various woodland friends who help him along the way. Eventually, he discovers a family of mice who have found the pumpkin and offers to share it with them, learning a valuable lesson about the joy of sharing.

I found this children’s book utterly delightful. The writing is simple and engaging, perfect for its young audience and beginning readers. The scene where Harry interacts with Donna the Duck, who suggests the pumpkin might have been carried away by the wind, made me chuckle. The dialogue felt warm and playful, and I appreciated each animal’s unique personality, like Ollie the Owl’s wise demeanor and Sally the Squirrel’s cheeky energy.

Harry’s decision to share his pumpkin with the mice showed incredible kindness and generosity, which is a wonderful message for young readers. The idea of sharing as a source of happiness was woven beautifully into the narrative without feeling preachy. The feast scene, with pumpkin stew, pie, and roasted seeds, left me craving something pumpkin-flavored myself.

The vibrant watercolor illustrations bring the pages to life and are the perfect complement to Tapia’s lively tale. From Harry’s bright yellow pumpkin to the cozy cave of the mice, each illustration added charm and excitement. The scene I loved most was when Harry put on his detective hat, which was just a leaf–an adorable scene that is sure to delight young readers.

I wholeheartedly recommend Harry the Hedgehog and the Missing Pumpkin, by Rayner Tapia, to parents, teachers, and anyone looking for a heartwarming story to share with young children. It’s perfect for bedtime or a classroom read-aloud. The themes of kindness and community are timeless, and Harry the Hedgehog is sure to be a beloved character for many.

Bruce and the Trouble with Antlers

Bruce and The Trouble with Antlers, by Gina Frisby, is a heartwarming children’s story set in the breathtaking landscape of Jasper National Park. Bruce, a young, fun-loving moose, becomes the center of attention in town, charming visitors with his gleaming antlers and playful antics. However, when Bruce experiences a dramatic, unexpected loss of his prized antlers, his world turns upside down. The book follows Bruce as he navigates insecurity, isolation, and eventually self-acceptance, culminating in the joyful realization that change is natural and beautiful.

From the get-go, I was drawn into the story by Bruce’s lively character. The way he photo-bombs tourists and wears his iconic blue Jasper ball cap makes him delightfully relatable. His antics bring so much joy to everyone around him that you can’t help but smile while reading. Yet, the moment Bruce’s antlers fall off was genuinely emotional. The scene, where Bruce stares in disbelief at his reflection and tries not to faint, captured vulnerability in a way that even young readers would understand. It struck me how the author managed to convey the anxiety of losing something that defines you—what a way to connect with kids experiencing their own moments of change.

The writing itself felt refreshingly playful and rhythmic. Gina Frisby’s use of repetition and onomatopoeia added humor and drama in all the right places. Bruce’s disguises as a barista or a ski instructor after losing his antlers were funny and adorable. These parts cleverly illustrate how far someone will go to hide vulnerability. And the descriptions of Bruce strutting around town in silly costumes made me laugh out loud. It’s clear the book balances humor with heartfelt moments, making it engaging for both children and the adults who read to them.

Visually, the story shines through its vivid imagery of Jasper National Park. Angela Gooliaff’s illustrations must be quite something, even if I couldn’t see them here. The written descriptions, though, were vivid enough to make me imagine the snowy, bustling park full of ice skaters, snowboarders, and adventure seekers. But what stands out the most is Bruce’s journey of self-acceptance; the message is clear: change isn’t something to fear. The crowd cheering Bruce on made my heart feel full. It’s a triumphant moment, one that celebrates embracing growth, inside and out.

Bruce and The Trouble with Antlers is a delightful read for anyone looking to explore themes of self-worth, change, and community. It’s perfect for children who might be struggling with growing pains or any sort of transition. Gina Frisby has a knack for taking serious themes and making them light and engaging, and I’d recommend this book to families, educators, and young readers who enjoy a good laugh mixed with a meaningful lesson. Bruce’s story is as heartwarming as it is humorous, and it will leave a smile on your face long after the last page.

Just a Puppy

Peni Clark Author Interview

Heart Trouble for ZZ follows a playful dog who receives a lot of help from his loving family when he has a difficult time remaining calm after being diagnosed with a heart condition. Where did the idea for this story come from?

I love golden retrievers. I have had many of them over the years.

When I got my newest English golden retriever, Zawadi, (his nickname is ZZ), he was a handful. Just kooky!

But that was okay, I loved him regardless.

Then, I took him to the vet for his first check-up.

They told me they thought ZZ had a heart problem!

What…?

A heart scan was done, and I had to wait days for the results.

I was a crazy dog mommy, trying to keep both ZZ and me calm.

One of the worst weeks.

Then, I thought, If this is tough for me, it must be even harder for ZZ. He’s just a puppy! He doesn’t understand what’s happening.

Then…ding, ding, ding! The idea of Heart Trouble for ZZ came to me.

Is there anything from your own childhood experiences included in ZZ’s story?

When I was young, my family had an absolutely nutty dog called “Maxwell Smart.” I included some of his antics in this story.

The art in this book is fantastic. What was the art collaboration process like with illustrator Zoe Saunders?

Zoe was a dream to work with. Every day, she would send me a page she worked on to get my approval or for me to tell her what to “tweak.” She took any suggestion with a positive attitude and changed anything I asked for. Zoe is quite talented! I was amazed at the variety of expressions she was able to give to ZZ! After six weeks of working with her daily, I had Zoe withdrawal when the book was completed!

Can young readers look forward to more books from you soon? What are you currently working on?

Yes, I have three more picture books coming out in 2025.

Fried Taters is about a little girl in W.V. who is on a quest to find potatoes so her grandmother can fix her fried taters again.

LillieMae’s Safari Hat (Zoe illustrated this book too!) is about a girl who goes on safari wearing her favorite hat, but when it blows off her head, different baby animals find it and use it for their own devices!

Old Long Snout is about a shy little girl who befriends an invisible pig that helps her overcome her loneliness and timidity.
