Worth and Hope

Parker C. Wilson Author Interview

In Excalibur’s Pendragon, readers follow a young boy battling with grief and depression as he tries desperately to fit into his newly discovered role as a Pendragon. What inspired you to write this novel?

In my life, I’ve seen how people feel powerless or even worthless because they may struggle with depression or grief. I care about helping them find hope while they learn to handle these emotions, and I believe that reading or telling stories is a great way to accomplish this. In the end, Ryan Walker’s purpose is to show readers that they have worth and hope while they are going through hard times, and if I can take Ryan on a journey that demonstrates the strength he has in his weaknesses, maybe I can help readers to have the mentality to do the same.

I find that while writing, you sometimes ask questions and have the characters answer them. Do you find that to be true? What questions did you ask yourself while writing this story?

I can definitely relate to this. When I write, many of my characters have a special purpose or theme I like to explore even when I don’t immediately have an answer. Sometimes, when the paths and personalities of my characters develop in my mind, or when I am putting my words to paper, I find that they end up teaching me something I hadn’t considered before.

Asking questions is a great way to develop a story. Some of my idea-generating questions include “How do the characters impact their world and vice versa?” or “What theme can I explore through the contrast between different characters?” or “How can I use my story to deliver a message even if it’s not said directly?” or “Will this person’s small choices cause a big impact over a long course of time?”

What scene in the book did you have the most fun writing?

For some reason that is a hard one for me to answer. I have a lot of fast-paced scenes in my book, but I also have moments when protagonists and antagonists take time to contemplate their situation. I like to explore the minds of my characters just as much as I like to see them perform their major plot points. For Excalibur’s Pendragon, I’d say the last few chapters are my favorite because there are a lot of retrospective discussions that lead to a highly anticipated decision, which serves as the delivery of my book’s primary message.

Can you give us a glimpse into Book 2 and where it will take readers?

Book 2 will feature a deeper dive into the magic world of Annwn, the primary setting for The Aethervard Legacy Series. I spent most of Book 1 preparing the characters and readers for this world. Now I am showing how the magic system works and how its practice greatly impacts Annwn for good and bad. I am also excited to explore the conflict between the protagonists and their challenges. Overall, expect a lot more world-building and even more character development.

The modern-day successor of Pendragon Arthur is summoned to the magic realm of Annwn in Excalibur’s Pendragon: Book One of the Aethervard Legacy!

What empowers a legend? What turned a lowly boy into a warrior king? Who says that a new legend can’t be produced in the modern day?

How could a high school boy like Ryan Walker come to know or care about such things when his soul is broken? Even with the support of his father and friends, he lacks the fortitude to face his inner conflict, a struggle that has worn down his spirit for nearly a year. In Ryan’s eyes, the way forward is impossible.

But this pain doesn’t spare the troubled boy from the magic trials that await him. Somehow, he is burdened with powers too great for any human to handle, abilities that make him the target of ferocious demons that seek to taste his blood. Try as he might to escape this, Ryan is pulled toward an ancient legacy built upon the sentient sword Excalibur and its servants known as the Pendragons. The more he learns of this legacy, the more he is surrounded by mystic powers, a secret organization, characters from Arthurian lore, and enemies from the enchanted realm of Annwn.

These extraordinary forces push Ryan to his breaking point, but there is one more challenge that is harder than the rest. Some people are not who they seem, and their secrets could prove harmful when brought to light. This revelation could blow Ryan off course at a time when one deviation can cost him everything.

Regardless of the outcome, whatever path is placed before Ryan by the godlike sentinels of Annwn, what good can he do when he is so eager to reject his calling? How can he become a Chosen One when he feels robbed of the right to choose otherwise? Furthermore, in the event that he is offered that choice, what could possibly dissuade him from taking the way out?

Discover the answers to these questions and more in the first installment of The Aethervard Legacy! Named a winner in the Summer 2023 PenCraft Awards, this book will transport you into a world filled with action, fantasy, and an invitation to discover the powers of enduring faith and redemptive love.

Excalibur’s Pendragon

In Excalibur’s Pendragon, Parker C. Wilson introduces us to Ryan Walker, a teenager grappling with the aftermath of his mother’s untimely death and the ensuing depression. His quest for normalcy is derailed when he learns of his identity as the latest Pendragon, a direct descendant of the legendary King Arthur. The novel skillfully navigates Ryan’s journey as he balances the harsh realities of his newfound role with the challenges of adolescence.

Wilson’s foray into the realm of high fantasy with this novel is a notable addition to the extensive collection of works inspired by Arthurian legend. Despite the challenge of innovating within such a well-trodden theme, Wilson manages to blend familiar elements with unique twists, creating a narrative distinct from its predecessors. Ryan, initially depicted as an average teenager, finds himself thrust into a world of destiny and conflict, a journey he is reluctant to embrace. The novel playfully acknowledges its adherence to certain genre tropes, yet it confidently steps into uncharted territories, maintaining the reader’s engagement with its inventive plot twists.

The core of Excalibur’s Pendragon lies in its exploration of destiny and the often-limited control we have over our own paths. The story’s approach to this theme is fresh, rendering Ryan and the other characters as relatable and well-rounded. The narrative logic is consistent and well-structured within the book’s universe. Wilson’s narrative prowess shines particularly in the action-packed sequences, which escalate in intensity and stakes, revealing surprising alliances and betrayals. This dynamic storytelling ensures that the book remains a compelling read, particularly as it approaches its climax. The conclusion, while not a cliffhanger, leaves ample room for future exploration, inviting readers to anticipate further developments in this captivating narrative.

Excalibur’s Pendragon stands out as a creative and thrilling interpretation of Arthurian legend, blending the familiar with the innovative to craft a story that is both engaging and thought-provoking. Wilson’s novel is a testament to the enduring appeal of the genre and the potential for new stories to emerge from its rich tapestry–highly recommended.

A Tale of Good vs. Evil

Robert A. Walker Author Interview

Six Moons, Seven Gods follows a guild of skilled thieves who plot to overthrow the kingdoms of Baelon but, after hitting a roadblock reach out to the League of Assassins for help. What was your inspiration for the wild journey you take readers on in this novel?

I wanted to do something that reflected the complexities of life; i.e., “nothing’s as simple as it seems,” “few things are black and white,” etc. Because real life is often complicated and messy, and despite outward appearances, few things stand alone.

What was the inspiration for the relationship that develops between the characters?

That is a difficult question to answer, given that there are so many different relationships in Six Moons, Seven Gods. I wanted to show how relationships can endure despite the passage of time and separation by long distance (e.g., the two kings), how strong bonds are not restricted to “the good guys”, and the lengths to which people will go to assist those with whom they have bonded.

What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?

This is very much a tale of good vs. evil, and right vs. wrong, but the book also explores how vague those concepts are, and how differently we all define them.

When will book two be available? Can you give us an idea of where that book will take readers?

A rough outline of book two is complete and firmly rooted in my head. I have just begun to put paper to pen, however. It will likely be another year or two in the making, depending on how much time I devote to marketing book one.

The skilled thieves of the Takers Guild plot to overthrow the kingdoms of Baelon, but when their plans are thwarted by a prescient woman and her brooding daughter, they must turn to the League of Assassins for assistance. Meanwhile, retired royal guard Rolft Aerns returns to the palace of King Axil with an old score to settle. When they all cross paths–and swords–in the dark shadows of Fostead’s south end, nothing is as it seems and the murder count rises quickly.

The long fingers of the Guild reach everywhere, and one overly ambitious thief is all it takes to spark a chain of events that will haunt the world of Baelon for many years to come.

Six Moons, Seven Gods is book one in The Legends of Baelon.

Six Moons, Seven Gods

In Robert A. Walker’s Six Moons, Seven Gods, loyalty and treachery entwine, friendships are tested, and dangerous secrets are held close to the heart. As deadly schemes unfold, an assassin’s life takes unexpected turns. At the same time, old acquaintances are revived from oblivion, and cryptic messages are delivered in this powerful plot that’s filled with many uncertainties. Additionally, rumors of murder spread about the land and threaten all who dwell within its borders. In this mystical world, chaos is propagated by the one sworn to the people, a daring assassination is set in motion, and the fate of a powerful captive is left yet to be decided. Six Moons, Seven Gods is a political tale that involves an intriguing mix of characters, including lovers, assassins, rulers, thieves, and a dreamer.

Robert A. Walker weaves themes of action, power, friendship, and love to create a brilliant, compelling narrative that hooks the reader from start to finish. I found myself turning the pages quickly as I couldn’t wait to unravel the next part of the plot. I especially enjoyed the author’s depiction of caramadie and friendship, as the characters are seen joking and teasing one another with statements like “You couldn’t rob a blind man if he left his doors unlocked.” Furthermore, the vivid descriptions make it a joy to picture the characters. For example, one character is described as having “chiseled facial features, skin browned by the sun, and thick crown of black curly hair.”

Six Moons, Seven Gods is told through multiple perspectives and involves various characters from different walks of life. I especially like Mari, as she blacks out and has visions that make her seem mysterious and intriguing. This is also the first book in the Legends of Baelon series, so keep in mind that this novel is setting up the whole series.

Fans of books set in a medieval, magical world will be captivated by this book. Amidst assassination plots and arrow attacks, visionary characters and mystical incidents leave you with suspense and deep questions that keep you turning the pages for more. Readers will find themselves laughing, their hearts racing, and their minds engaged with its intricate plot.

I Wanted To Write Something Different

Author Interview
Ken C. Kennedy Author Interview

Odox: A Medieval Epic Fantasy follows a military officer with the power of telekinesis who is betrayed by his general and must find a way to save the kingdom. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

I wanted to write something that was different than just your normal Fantasy book with a powerful magician. The idea of being betrayed is also seen in fantasy, and I love to see when the underdog triumphs.

Odex is betrayed and left for dead but refuses to give up hope or let down the kingdom. What were some driving ideals behind your character’s development?

Hope. Odox needed to fight for something bigger than himself. He soon realizes that he needs help from others even if that help comes from a very small bird.

What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?

You can not judge a book by its cover. For instance, Lanx was so insecure about his abilities that he never even tried to work through his issues. Once it was revealed to him who he was everything changed.  For Odox, it was needing to rely on others. He could not do everything himself but he thought he could until it was too late.

Where does the story go in the next book and where do you see it going in the future?

I have already planned out the three other books in the series. The only hint I will give about the next book is the title. A Cracked World.

ODOX, A MEDIEVAL EPIC FANTASY, is set in the magical world of Mabbalor. In this world, you can’t always believe what you see.
The novel follows a Drakkearean military officer named Odox. He possesses the power of telekinesis given to him by an elder of the ancient Croc Sapien race. Only the immortal Queen Isla of the Croc Spaiens’ possesses the same ability.
Odox must master the power and use it to fight against the menacing armies of the northern Throderian empire and a horde of Mul-Senup Ogres, giants, and Shiver Hallow witches.
However, his world collapses when general Venla, one of his fellow officers, betrays him. Odox is captured, blinded, caged, and put in a hole in the bottom of a dungeon to rot. He needs to escape and find the mysterious Queen Isla.

To the north, in the human-occupied Throderian empire, King Thaddeus is set on expanding his castle grounds. However, he must choose between expanding his kingdom quickly or heeding the council of his advisors and slowing his progress to respect nature. If not respected, Mabbalor would unleash its rage on the person responsible in the form of cursed tree root creatures called Underfoots.

ODOX A Medieval Epic Fantasy

In Odox: A Medieval Epic Fantasy, Mysteries of Mabbalor: Book One, author Ken C. Kennedy masterfully weaves an enchanting tale set in the rich and vivid world of Mabbalor. The story follows the captivating journey of Odox, a courageous Drakkearean military officer. He navigates through treachery, a menacing enemy army, and the burgeoning power bestowed upon him by an enigmatic Croc Sapien.

The gripping prologue instantly immerses readers into the imaginative realm of Mabbalor, where a young boy – who is later revealed to be our protagonist, Odox – takes center stage. Kennedy has skillfully crafted a dynamic cast of characters, including the memorable bounty hunters and the uniquely intriguing ogre brothers, whose lively dialogue adds delightful entertainment to the narrative.

Mabbalor’s well-conceived magick system effortlessly complements the story’s fabric, providing a balanced, natural presence without dominating the plot. With its inherent limitations, the magick system ensures that Odox remains a relatable, human-like character instead of an invincible god. The only drawbacks are occasional slow pacing and a scarcity of information on certain kingdoms. This could be intentional on the author’s part to leave readers in wait for future novels in the series.

While the epilogue may initially leave readers feeling somewhat perplexed about the unfolding events and characters’ identities, the tantalizing mystery ultimately fuels anticipation for the next installment in the series.

Kennedy has successfully created a vibrant, immersive world, complete with multiple kingdoms and a sophisticated magick system. The characters are remarkably distinctive and genuine. Odox: A Medieval Epic Fantasy, Mysteries of Mabbalor is a captivating epic fantasy that takes readers on an adventure in a magical world that is unique and mysterious.
