Small Town Feel
Posted by Literary-Titan

Sweet Secrets on Mackinac Island follows a freshly unemployed marketing executive who suddenly inherits her great-aunt’s fudge shop on Mackinac Island, sending her on an unplanned adventure. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?
I knew I wanted to create a cozy mystery novel with a bit of romance thrown in. I really came up with the local first and started brainstorming from there, wondering what type of person would end up on Mackinac Island and how they would adjust to the new environment. I wanted someone completely out of their element. The idea of someone in the corporate world came to me, and I thought it would be funny to see how they would handle the island environment, and especially the small town feel of it. That’s really how Lucy came about.
Was there anything from your own life that you put into the characters in your novel?
Well, the cats were based on two of our seven cats, Thor and Winnie LOL. The rest of the characters really just came from my imagination. I’ve been to Mackinac several times and used my experience of my time there in shaping the local.
How did the mystery develop for this story? Did you plan it before writing, or did it develop organically?
Initially, there was a completely different mystery involving hidden treasure. I had a rough draft and gave it to my daughter, Maddie, who serves as my editor. She read it and pointed out several plot holes. We went round and round with this draft, trying to make it make sense, and in the end ended up ditching it and starting over with the current murder mystery. The story was very planned out and went through many revisions before we were finally satisfied.
When will Book Two be available? Can you give us an idea of where that book will take readers?
I am hoping to have book two, tentatively titled Sweet Revenge on Mackinac Island, available by November, fingers crossed. That story will continue to follow Lucy as she navigates life as a fudge shop owner and will also introduce some new quirky characters that will join the ones from the first book. The plan is to release the books with each season. Book one is set in the summer, book two will be in the fall, then the last two will be in winter and spring.

Fresh from a corporate marketing job and a messy breakup in Chicago, Lucy is determined to prove she can run Mabel’s Marvelous Fudge—even if she can barely tell a candy thermometer from a tire gauge. With help from her quirky teenage employees and the island’s self-appointed Fudgeamentals committee (a group of elderly confectionery enthusiasts with strong opinions about everything), Lucy slowly finds her footing in her sweet new life.
But when the island’s wealthy power couple turns up dead under suspicious circumstances, Lucy discovers that paradise has a dark side. Between dodging the Fudgeamentals’ amateur detective theories, navigating romantic tension with rugged bike shop owner Jake Miller and polished lawyer Ethan Hayes, and earning the approval of Felix—the island’s most discerning feline critic—Lucy has her hands full.
When someone vandalizes her shop and leaves threatening messages, Lucy realizes the killer isn’t finished. With Felix as her unlikely sidekick and the Fudgeamentals as her enthusiastic backup, she’ll need all her marketing skills and newfound island connections to solve the mystery before she becomes the next victim.
A deliciously entertaining cozy mystery filled with small-town charm, romantic entanglements, and one very opinionated cat who might just be the best detective on the island.

Pairs: This Dating Site Will Be the Death of You
Posted by Literary Titan

Cristina Matta’s Pairs: This Dating Site Will Be the Death of You is a fast-paced, offbeat murder mystery wrapped in biting satire and stuffed with eccentricity. Set in the humid chaos of Tampa, Florida, the book follows Detective Ned Jenkins as he investigates the bizarre death of Susan LaFont—a woman who apparently invited seven peculiar men from a friendship-dating app called Pairs to the local aquarium, only to end up murdered. What unfolds is a series of sharply written vignettes of these suspects, each more absurd and hilarious than the last. There’s a man wearing Batman stickers on his face, another eating endless pizza, one with a monkey, and even a guy whose profile picture is Barbie and Ken mid-coitus. Matta doesn’t just describe characters, she roasts them alive and lets them squirm in their own weirdness.
Matta’s writing is clever and self-aware. She leans hard into absurdity without tipping over into chaos, and that’s no easy feat. Her voice is confident, wickedly observant, and full of snark. The structure is tight—each chapter feels like a miniature sketch comedy piece, but it all ties back to the central mystery. Detective Ned is gruff and jaded but utterly relatable, especially as he navigates an increasingly ridiculous sea of suspects and reconsiders his own past missteps. I found myself both enjoying the mystery and savoring the wry commentary on modern dating, loneliness, and how deeply strange people can be when left to their own devices.
The story’s comedy can sometimes swallow its stakes. There were moments when I wanted more depth, more emotion, something raw. The victim, Susan, remains a bit of a mystery herself, not just in the whodunit sense but emotionally. And while I adored the wild suspects, a few felt more like clever caricatures than real people. Still, maybe that’s the point. The book is unapologetically satirical. It’s not here to hold your hand through a touching drama, it’s here to slap your face with a fish and then dare you not to laugh.
Pairs: This Dating Site Will Be the Death of You is sharp, funny, and refreshingly weird. It’s a great read for fans of Carl Hiaasen, readers who enjoy a twist on classic detective stories, or anyone who’s ever been baffled by online dating profiles. If you like your mysteries with more laughs than laments, and your characters with quirks dialed up to eleven, this book’s for you.

Improbable Future
Posted by Literary Titan

Following Samuel Hayward’s death in his prison cell, news reports insist it was not a suicide. Wealthy, influential, and corrupt, he was revered as the Messiah by a misguided group of violent racists. Madison Hayward returns to the mansion in Albany, New York, where she endured a traumatic childhood. As the next in line to inherit Samuel’s wealth, she finds herself at a crossroads. Seeking closure for her past abuse and the secrets she has harbored, Madison breaks off her engagement and becomes ensnared in the painful memories of her youth. In her quest for support, Madison reaches out to her Cadence family. But safety is elusive, and trust is scarce in this gripping mystery novel, as her return unveils a deadly web of secrets.
Improbable Future by Dianne L. Hagan is the fifth book in the Cadence Mystery series. This compelling story delves into the harsh realities of racism, religious fanaticism, and systemic injustice. As the title suggests, the pervasive corruption, hatred, and wickedness in society have eroded the hope for a better future. The novel addresses both sexual and physical abuse, making it a poignant and intense read. Hagan’s storytelling is masterful, with a captivating plot filled with suspense and tinged with horror. The setting—a mansion with a tragic history—adds depth to the narrative. Madison Hayward is a complex character, driven by her painful past and a desire to make a positive change in the world. Her interactions with a diverse and supportive group of friends and family are heartwarming. The ongoing backstory suggests that readers will benefit from reading the previous books in the Cadence Mystery series to fully grasp the narrative’s nuances. Fans of suspenseful thrillers will find this journey to uncover corruption and seek justice both engaging and thought-provoking.
Improbable Future by Dianne L. Hagan is a riveting addition to the Cadence Mystery series, blending suspense, emotional depth, and social commentary. Madison Hayward’s journey through her traumatic past and her fight against the legacies of corruption and injustice make for a compelling narrative. This novel not only entertains but also challenges readers to reflect on the pervasive issues of racism and abuse.

Multilayered Mysteries
Posted by Literary-Titan

Stone Coat Man: A Cadence Mystery follows a woman whose grisly discovery begins a chain of events that rocks her small town. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?
I’d once seen a program on television that purported a theory that Sasquatch creatures are humans who prefer to live isolated in the wild. I remembered that theory when I started researching the rich mythology of the Six Nations of Indigenous Peoples in New York State and came upon the Seneca myth of the Genoskwa. It fit this story perfectly that deals with the mysteries of who we are and how we are shaped by the legacy of our ancestors and our own experiences.
What was your favorite character to write for and why? Was there a scene you felt captured the character’s essence?
I have so many favorite characters in this series, and this is book #4, so the list grows longer with each book, but Leroy Steeprock has a special place in my heart. He is wise, funny, courageous, noble, and lovable, and he understands human nature. He is steeped in the traditions of his people and he has keen perceptions about life, humanity, and nature.
Every scene with Leroy is one of my favorites, but I love the scene where he is introduced to readers. I took meticulous care in the details of that scene and his interactions with the other characters. For me, and I hope for my readers, it is a scene that has stayed with me and that I enjoy reading again and again.
What was the hardest part about writing a mystery story, where you constantly have to give just enough to keep the mystery alive until the big reveal?
Writing a mystery is fun. It’s like a huge jigsaw puzzle, especially when there are multilayered mysteries occurring at the same time, which is how all the books in the Cadence Mystery series are structured. It means keeping notes on details and many rereads of the manuscript to ensure hints and red herrings are well-placed and that all loose ends are tied up at the end. I relish the process, even when I’m up at 2:30 in the morning trying to get something just right. Loving the process is key because flexibility is a must and things change during my readings, revisions, beta readings, and with the editors. Love of the story is also a must because the story is good about revealing details my copious notes somehow missed.
What will the next book in that series be about, and when will it be published?
I am 62,000 words into book #5 of the Cadence Mystery series. The book is titled Improbable Future. Again, it will be a standalone book, but it is also a book that brings the characters of the series to places and decisions they never imagined. It’s a thriller! I’ve already come to really like a couple of the new characters introduced in this book, and I can’t wait to share them with my readers. I expect the book to be released mid or late summer.

The narrative begins with Marian Greene’s startling discovery during a routine walk in the woods, catapulting her and the town into a complex challenge that unravels the fabric of their quiet community.
Dianne L. Hagan is an adept storyteller, weaving a narrative transcending conventional mystery thrillers. Her portrayal of protagonist Marian Greene is notably profound, creating a tangible connection between the reader and Marian’s intricate journey. The book’s exploration of societal and political themes, particularly concerning minority rights and treatment, introduces a layer of depth and relevance, enriching the narrative without detracting from its engrossing pace.
Hagan’s incorporation of Native American traditions, including the mythical Genoskwa, melds a rich tapestry of cultural discovery into the mystery, enhancing the story’s authenticity and appeal. What the Heart Knows
Posted by Literary Titan

What the Heart Knows, by Mara Purl, offers a gentle narrative set in the serene town of Milford-Haven, California. Distinct from the bustling energy of Los Angeles, Milford-Haven is characterized by its tranquility and charm, making it an ideal backdrop for self-discovery and personal growth. The story primarily follows Miranda Jones, an artist who finds her identity and purpose in this quaint setting.
The book captivates from the start with a suspenseful prologue in which a reporter delves into a possibly illicit construction project, setting the stage for an unfolding mystery. The story then skillfully shifts to Miranda Jones in her art studio, introducing her as a key figure in a tapestry of intriguing characters. Although the narrative leaves room for further development of characters like Jack Sawyer and his ex-wife Samantha, their presence adds depth and intrigue. The initial mystery around the reporter’s death, while not fully resolved, serves as a compelling backdrop that enriches the overall narrative.
Purl’s writing style is fluid and accessible, effortlessly drawing readers into the world she crafts. Her attention to detail is particularly noteworthy, vividly painting scenes that come alive in the reader’s imagination. This aspect was especially appealing to me, as it allowed the narrative to unfold like a film in my mind. One of the intriguing aspects of What the Heart Knows is its diverse cast of characters. As a fan of the rich ensembles found in science fiction and fantasy, I appreciated the variety of personalities in this story. Among them, Miranda and Zack stand out as particularly engaging, and the subtle tension involving Cynthia adds an interesting dynamic. Although I believe these relationships and plotlines offer room for further exploration, they contribute to the novel’s rich tapestry and keep the reader engaged with their potential.
What the Heart Knows is a well-written, sweet story set in an idyllic town. It presents a tapestry of characters and a hint of mystery, but I feel the narrative could benefit from a more focused exploration of fewer characters and a clearer resolution of its central mysteries. Despite these elements, the book offers an enjoyable journey into a world of introspection and artistic discovery.

Spirits From the Other Side
Posted by Literary-Titan

Cameron Dean P. I. to the Deceased follows a man investigating the accident that almost killed him while he grapples with helping a man only he can see. Where did the idea for this book come from?
I was writing the Polish Dragon P.I. series when the idea of having a spirit from beyond needing a private detective popped into my head. Not wanting to take the Polish Dragon down a different path, I decided to create a new character and have him work with the spirits from the other side. Plus, I have always been intrigued by ghost stories and people who say they can communicate with the dead. I also wrote it simultaneously with the Polish Dragon P. I. The Missing Gambler. Both books are intertwined with the same storyline.
Did you plan the tone and direction of Detective Dean’s story, or did it come out organically as you were writing?
It came out organically as I was writing this story. The difficult part was making sure that this story fell in line with the Polish Dragon story which I mentioned above. The Cameron Dean story is told in the first person, and the Polish Dragon is told in the third, and I had to make sure the writing style was reflected properly in each storyline. Sometimes things would pop into my head that helped me write the story, and I was wondering if I was actually getting help from beyond. I do believe that our loved ones still look down on us and help us whenever they can.
Are there any emotions or memories from your own life that you put into your characters’ lives?
I always try to put into each story some things from my own life. They might be places where I grew up, schools that I attended, or businesses or things from the old neighborhood that no longer exist. Some people have actually mentioned that when they read my books. Especially people that I grew up with and relatives. For me, adding something personal makes the story more believable.
I find a problem in well-written stories, in that I always want there to be another book to keep the story going. Is there a second book planned?
I have been considering doing another book which is why I ended this one the way I did. It more than likely will be after the holidays, though. It would mean writing two series at the same time. That may prove to be quite a challenge. Cameron Dean P. I. to the Deceased and The Polish Dragon P. I. series, one for the spirit world and one for the day-to-day world.

Cameron Dean P. I. to the Deceased
Posted by Literary Titan

In Cameron Dean P. I. to the Deceased, author Steve Zimcosky presents a gripping narrative that masterfully blends the elements of a mystery thriller with a touch of the supernatural. The story unfolds with Detective Dean awakening from a coma, caused by an incident involving a truck six months earlier. Dean’s memory of his life prior to the accident is fragmented, leaving him to piece together his past while grappling with intense and haunting recurring nightmares.
A compelling twist in the tale occurs when Dean, alone in his hospital room, notices a mysterious figure at his bedside — a figure invisible to others. Seeking understanding, he turns to Francine, a psychic, who reveals that Dean’s near-fatal accident has unexpectedly heightened his sensitivity to the supernatural. Through Francine’s guidance, Dean learns that the apparition is Sammy, a man Dean had relentlessly pursued in his law enforcement career before Sammy’s untimely death. The plot takes a fascinating turn as the hunter and hunted form an unlikely alliance, seeking to solve the twin mysteries of Dean’s attempted murder and Sammy’s death.
Zimcosky’s narrative style is exceptionally immersive, drawing the reader into each scene with richly detailed descriptions. The story’s uniqueness lies in its blend of genres, offering a fresh take on the murder mystery by incorporating elements of the supernatural. The dynamic between the living Detective Dean and the spectral Sammy adds a layer of depth to the storyline, exploring themes of redemption, closure, and the unresolved threads of a life abruptly ended. The portrayal of Sammy’s emotional journey, as he revisits significant locations from his life, is handled with sensitivity and depth. Zimcosky skillfully evokes empathy for Sammy, allowing readers to viscerally experience his turmoil and longing for resolution.
This novel deserves high praise for its inventive plot and Zimcosky’s keen attention to detail. His ability to create vivid, engaging scenes makes the book a compelling read. I recommend Cameron Dean P. I. to the Deceased to anyone seeking a mystery that ventures beyond the conventional, offering a unique and thought-provoking experience. Zimcosky’s talent for weaving intricate narratives is evident, making this book a standout in its genre.
