Dragons are Majestic and Mysterious Creatures
Posted by Literary_Titan

A Tribe of Dragons and Dreamers is an intriguing fantasy novel continuing the series following Talwyn Survalor and her efforts to save her world from the darkness closing in. What draws you to the fantasy genre and, in particular, dragons?
From the time I first started reading fantasy–which was many, many years ago–I’ve always been blown away by the ability of authors to create whole new worlds and, in many cases, draw us into them so fully that readers feel like they’re there. The same is true with fantasy races, creatures, and characters who are so skillfully sculpted that we feel like they are real.
Even when I was young, I wanted to be a part of that. I wanted to be the author creating and sculpting fantasy places and people who feel real to those who read about them. I hoped that, one day, I’d get the opportunity to delight and entertain readers in a way that can make fantasy feel like reality. It took me many years to finally get the time, opportunity, and courage to try, and I am so glad that I did.
Dragons are my favorite fantasy creatures for a number of reasons. I’ve read and watched stories that portray dragons as evil hoarders who demand maiden sacrifices. I’ve read and watched others who portray them as wise and misunderstood. But regardless of which angle the creator of said dragon is coming from, some things are always true: dragons are majestic and mysterious creatures whose strength and flying abilities are cause for admiration.
What is one pivotal moment in the story that you think best defines Talwyn?
There are actually a number of pivotal moments for Talwyn in the story. She heads into the dragon shifters territory firmly believing certain things about both herself and the world around her. She starts to change and her views start to shift almost from the very first time she meets Dreyken, when she experiences something she believed she was no longer capable of experiencing. It takes her some more time and a few more shifts for her to come to terms with this, but this is the moment that starts her on a journey to healing the wounds of her past.
In fantasy novels, it’s easy to get carried away with the magical powers characters have. How did you balance the use of supernatural powers?
Like Brandon Sanderson and so many other great fantasy writers out there, the magic systems I create have rules, and I stick to those rules. In the A Trial of Kingdom series, though there are many species who have magic in their makeup, like shifters and seers, very few are actually able to channel magic and use it in any meaningful way. For those characters who are learning more about their magical abilities as the story goes on, I have a firm understanding of all those abilities, so that there is nothing that happens to them that doesn’t, or will not, make sense. And that is the key. When it is used in a story, magic has to ‘make sense’ within the world and the magic system, and it has to has limitations, even for the most magically powerful characters in the story.
When will book 3 be available? Can you give us an idea of where that book will take readers?
The current ETA for book 3 is spring 2024. Each book in the series will follow the path of one of the four seer guardians and their attempts to prepare themselves and the people of the realm for the coming war. In the first two books, though we learn more and more about who the mysterious dark sorcerer is and what his plans are, it’s drip fed slowly. Book 3 will be where the readers see the sorcerer’s evil forces in a much bigger way, from early in the story. It is where the antagonist, the dark sorcerer, starts acting in a more apparent way. The victories we see in the first two books are pushing him to rethink his strategy, and we see the beginnings of what that may be.

Talwyn Survalor would rather be lonely than endure another tragic loss. With disturbing visions of a dark legion closing in, the seer fears any friendship is doomed to end in heartbreak. But unless she can persuade a reclusive tribe of dragon shifters to help her safeguard the magical power source, there might not be anyone left to love…
Hoping to win over one of their winged leaders, Talwyn joins his guard in fending off demon raiders from their mountain fortress. But despite a growing bond with the handsome dragon shifter, she fears she’ll have to step onto a hopeless battlefield alone.
Can Talwyn secure the dragons’ aid before a ruthless warmonger enslaves her realm?
A Tribe of Dragons and Dreamers is the second book in the gripping A Trial of Kingdoms epic fantasy series. If you like fearless warriors, breathtaking landscapes, and impossible odds, then you’ll love Sherry Leclerc’s captivating tale.

Going Back to the Root of Monsters
Posted by Literary_Titan

Blood Tithe follows a 20-year-old young woman and historian who is ready to embark on a quest for unadulterated truth and cross into adulthood. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?
Our first novel within the Gothika world (Raise the Dead) had the readers thrown into the setting, so with Blood Tithe, we wanted to take a step back. By taking on the coming-of-age concept, it became a better way to explore and understand the world through Lyric’s eyes. We wanted to create and share that sense of wonder and exploration through someone who isn’t used to seeing this part of the world, as well as a sense of horror and dread about what lurks in the shadows. That was part of the inspiration, while the other part was actually Alfred Hitchcock in that his stories were about putting ordinary people in extraordinary situations. Lyric’s journey fell right into those stories that I like.
Lyric, Jalin, and Esperanza set out together to confront the danger that threatens their world. What was the inspiration for the relationship that developed between the characters?
So the first draft had the relationships drawn up very differently. In fact, Lyric was less of the main character and more of a supporting one on the first run with a hate/respect relationship between Jalin & Esperanza. The final product was more like an intense version of the X-Files’s Mulder & Scully – still with a hate/respect relationship but I had a need to create a very “driven” personality that would clash against a stoic and reserved personality. For Lyric, her personal relationships develop with each interaction with the outside world. Much like Rapunzel being exposed to the real world, is overwhelming but she believes in collaboration and so she is the bridge between the two J&E.
Monsters were not supposed to be real, yet, that is what Lyric discovers on her journey. The creatures in this book were very intriguing. How did you go about creating them for this book?
Firstly, we wanted our own take on vampires (or vampyres as we call them). Both CS and I are history buffs when it comes to legends and lore, so we talked extensively about what it means to be that creature. We wanted to go back to the roots of it being more monstrous and inhuman than what was portrayed in current media. As for the monsters that are touched on here (or will be coming in later books) – they are either amalgamations of creatures based on myths local to us, or local Mexican culture. Being Mexican, I wanted to give my culture’s creatures and monsters time in the spotlight. So yes, more creatures to come.
I hope the series continues in other books. If so, where will the story take readers?
The next story (which I’ve already started working on) is going to touch base with our first pair of characters (Emilio & Marisol). The first book had a semi-happy ending but with a few questions left unanswered. This next book will answer some questions, expand more of the world, and probably create more questions. We actually have a plan for 5 to 6 stories that will connect with each other as well as the overall plot we have mapped out. When CS and I map a story out… we really map things out big. In short – there will be more to come from Lyric, Jalin & Esperanza as well.

For Lyric Wax, who dreams of a future as a Historian for the Grand Archives, this chilling truth becomes a haunting reality as she navigates her Verdad – a perilous path to adulthood – to find her place in the Imperium and prove herself. She sets out on a journey beyond the safety of familiar walls. Her destination: the mysteries that lie beyond the Great Gates of the Imperium of Kraphax.
What begins as a simple errand to a safe Shrine quickly transforms into a horrific ordeal. Lyric along with the irritable Inquisitor Jalin Cortez, and his partner Esperanza Boyorquez, must traverse treacherous realms of darkness and confront terrifying certainties hidden beneath the surface. Will she emerge triumphant, armed with the knowledge of the world’s buried secrets, or will she succumb to the ghastly fate that awaits those who delve too deep into the mysteries of the unknown?
The answers lie in the shadows she must bring to light.
…they weren’t supposed to be real.

Sons of Empire
Posted by Literary Titan

Sons of Empire marks the captivating beginning of the “World of Empire” saga by Chandler McGrew, deftly weaving elements of steampunk and high fantasy reminiscent of iconic works like “World of Warcraft” and “Northern Lights.” Dive deep into a realm where Caltris, a masterful assassin, grapples with profound moral challenges and power-hungry adversaries. At the same time, Trastan, the son of the High Mage, navigates his unique power constraints to emerge as a military force. Our protagonists must swiftly identify their allies in a dynamic landscape where ancient magic is replaced by innovative magic intertwined with technology. The looming shadow of the Council of Five and an impending war adds layers of intrigue and suspense.
Sons of Empire is an engaging journey for aficionados of fantasy and steampunk. Its universe combines compelling characters and an intricate blend of fantasy and steampunk nuances. Introducing factions like the Council of Five and Altmages further enriches the narrative. While the story may not tread wholly uncharted territory, it boasts an allure that draws readers into its core, making them invested in the world McGrew crafts.
McGrew’s prose, while straightforward, occasionally delights with a touch of archaic vocabulary fitting for its fantastical setting. Potential readers should be prepared for a wealth of information upfront. Still, perseverance is rewarded as the layers of the tale unfold, leaving one deeply engrossed and eager for the saga’s next installment. If you’re a fan of both fantasy and sci-fi genres, Sons of Empire is undoubtedly a rewarding addition to your collection.

The Last War: Book One of The Cynnahu Saga
Posted by Literary Titan
Prophesy has dictated that five, not one, shall save the Archipelago; and that where swords fail, scrolls may prevail.
The people of the Archipelago of Cynnahu are used to war. Aeons ago their ancestors conquered the old continent, wresting it from the native Dragonkin whom they wiped out in a land-shattered conflict. Then, five hundred years later, new invaders arrived from the unknown south, the mireborn Naga, the snake-folk of Nag Isle who the Cynnahu folk have been ceaselessly fighting in the millennia since. But nothing prepared then for what was about to happen. A time foretold by an ancient Seer and Archmage speaks of a time when the Archipelago must fight its Last War against the Naga, a time when five heroes – Traveler, Orphan, Survivor, Student, and Lord – will set sail to rediscover the secret of the Elder Song.
Only they are not heroes. They are Myrriden, the footsore mage and single father; Sakura, an orphaned and homeless girl seeking vengeance; Volcan Darkrod, the enigmatic Fire Mage; Emrys, Myrriden’s nervous son; and Archmage Hoth, the unflappable Leader of the Cynnahu folk.
Guided by an ancient riddle recently uncovered by the famed Loremaster Aneirin, these chosen five must a run a race of swords, spells, and dusty scrolls – for while the Elder Song was crafted to summon the primeval power of the Dragonkin to save the Isles, it has, down to its very name, been forgotten. Will the courage and wits of two eleven-year-olds and three vastly different mages be enough to free purposefully hidden secrets from forces older than the Isles themselves and reunite the scattered Song while fighting a desperate war on land and sea? Only two things are certain: where swords fail scrolls may prevail, and that humanity stands at doom’s edge and time is against them.

A Tribe of Dragons and Dreamers: A Trial of Kingdoms Book 2
Posted by Literary Titan

A Tribe of Dragons and Dreamers whisks readers into the gripping odyssey of Talwyn Survalor, a Guardian Seer tasked with the monumental duty of rallying allies against a menacing dark sorcerer. As she ventures into the stronghold of the Stone Dragons Clan—dragonfolk who’ve concealed themselves for centuries following a brutal Demonkin onslaught—readers are introduced to the enigmatic Dreyken, the Dragon Lord. Amidst political intrigue, looming threats, and Dreyken’s personal struggles, their paths intertwine in a dance of destiny and cautious romance.
Leclerc plunges readers into the heart of the action from the outset. Readers are immediately ensnared by Talwyn’s determination as she navigates the intricate world of the dragonfolk. The romance, though burgeoning with immediate attraction, is laced with restraint and depth, effectively sidestepping the cliché pitfalls of instant gratification. Leclerc’s vivid imagery, such as the mesmerizing cavern illuminated by glow-worms, is a testament to her prowess in painting breathtaking landscapes with her words, transporting readers to realms that they wish were real.
A standout element in Leclerc’s narrative is her skill at portraying nuanced characters. The introduction of a Demonkin, deviating from its malevolent brethren, underscores the theme that good and evil often reside in shades of gray, challenging readers to think beyond stereotypes. And just when you think you’ve deciphered a character’s trajectory, Leclerc seamlessly introduces an unexpected twist, keeping readers eagerly turning pages.
One point to mention, for those familiar with the series, is the parallels in the character journeys between the books. Although each installment presents distinct narratives, there’s an underlying similarity in the progression of the main characters’ paths. But for those who revel in tales juxtaposing good and evil, sprinkled with elements of shifter romance, this book is a must-read.
Sherry Leclerc seamlessly transports you from the subterranean enclaves of an elusive tribe to the exhilarating expanses of the sky on dragon’s wings, culminating in a riveting climax. Highly recommended for a literary journey that promises adventure, depth, and a touch of magic.

The Four
Posted by Literary Titan

Alexandra Haden-Douglas’s novel, The Four, offers a thrilling journey through the freshmen year of high school, where a young witch, a siren, a demon goddess, and a vampire come together. Their adventurous saga sees them navigating through life, embracing their growing powers, and forging an unbreakable bond of friendship and love. Set against the full moon’s mystique and the backdrop of mundane reality, the story delves into their shared experiences.
The narrative takes an intriguing twist as they embark on a rescue mission to save their friend from the dark fairy world. The adventure that unfolds is rife with obstacles, demanding that The Four embrace their differences and lend each other unwavering support.
Set in scenic New Orleans, Haden-Douglas artfully captures the city’s essence and blends it seamlessly with her fictional universe. The storyline is a rich tapestry filled with unpredictable plot twists and heartwarming depictions of friendship and resilience. Although the narrative progresses quickly, Haden-Douglas’s vivid and graphically descriptive writing style ensures the reader is effortlessly able to keep pace with the mythical creatures and fantastical elements of The Four.
The characters in the novel are engaging and relatable, enhancing the book’s allure. With their varied personalities and distinctive abilities, Haden-Douglas has crafted a diverse and unique cast that resonates with readers. The realistic dynamics between the characters and their unwavering support for one another add layers of depth, making them all the more captivating.
What sets this novel apart is its strategic pacing and the overarching lessons it conveys. The character development and the emotional connections within the story stand out, contributing to its profound impact.
I wholeheartedly recommend The Four by Alexandra Haden-Douglas. Though it is rooted in the realm of fiction, it beautifully imparts the timeless lesson of embracing one’s uniqueness and maintaining a sense of self as one discovers their place in the world. It’s an utterly realistic message wrapped in a fantastical package, making this book a must-read for those looking to be both entertained and inspired.

Broken Sky
Posted by Literary Titan

Broken Sky by M.A.N. is a compelling tapestry of fantasy, folklore, and science fiction elements that weave together to form a truly epic hero’s journey. Our young protagonist bravely challenges fearsome creatures that have been terrorizing his country, ravaging communities, and fracturing families. As he valiantly fights to protect a loved one, he ascends to the role of the Savior, winning the town’s admiration. Yet, each victory exacts a painful toll on his own family, leaving him wracked with guilt, sorrow, and rage. These poignant experiences fuel his mission to seek out the Sorcerer, the root of all malevolence, in an attempt to end their cyclical dance of devastation.
The narrative unfolds across multiple lifetimes, each marked by confrontations with the Sorcerer that lead to exhilarating journeys across various realms. The narrative is immediately engrossing, pushing readers into the heart of the action from the get-go. The skillful interplay of time and interdimensional travel injects thrilling unpredictability into the story.
Broken Sky‘s narrative tends towards longer, wordy sentences that may not be to everyone’s taste. That said, a more in-depth exploration of critical scenes, particularly those rich in emotional substance, would have drawn readers into the storyline more and created a deeper connection with the characters. The author also made a unique stylistic choice to integrate onomatopoeic sound effects directly into the text. These elements may put off some readers, but they also give it a fresh feel, unlike other typical sci-fi novels, offering readers a distinctive literary journey.
The potential of the story is unmistakably clear. Broken Sky comes highly recommended, especially for aficionados of manga and folklore, as it brings a refreshing twist to these beloved genres. This novel holds immense promise to enchant readers into a truly extraordinary and captivating literary work.
