Having Faith

Shari Borkin Author Interview

The Movie Chair follows an enchanted theater seat that loves providing for children however they need while they are in the theater. What was the inspiration for your story?

As a child, my mother took my brother, myself, and neighborhood kids to the movies a lot as our form of cinema therapy. My mother had also written a few unpublished children’s stories for her grandchildren. I wanted to get back into my creative spirit again since I was a semi-retired art therapist.

My creative background consists of: painting, writing, creating a series of children’s meditation CDs, and producing youtube educational art and cooking videos. After my mother passed, I found a story she tried to write, incorporating a loving movie chair, but it was very politically incorrect. LOL. I decided to reconstruct it by combining it with my guided imagery meditation stories that I wrote for children. This is how “The Story Room”, “The Movie Chair,” and its sequel, “The Magic Movie Chair Adventures,” were created. In this book, The Movie Chair flies out the window with the children and their pet bird, “Sneaky Tweets.” to experience amazing new adventures.

What were the morals you were trying to capture while creating your character of the chair?

I feel that the story is based on Karma, that what you put out comes back to you eventually. And It’s a story about having Faith, everything works itself out, and miracles happen.

What were some educational aspects that were important for you to include in this children’s book?

Encouraging young children to explore their creativity and use their imaginations instead of playing video games. In some ways, just bringing back simple family values.

What is the next book that you are working on, and when will it be available?

The Magic Movie Chair Adventures

Once I find an established publisher, I’ll move forward with publishing the book. I am also looking into an animation series too.

The Movie Chair is the story of a caring little chair in a movie theater who is particularly fond of the weekends when children come to the theater. This delightful chair takes great pleasure in hiding coins in her cushions so that the children can buy snacks, poking rude adults with her spring, and being involved in many other weekend calamities.

When all seems well, adversity strikes when the movie theater is remodeled, and the chair finds herself learning a new lesson on a different adventure than she ever expected. But things have a way of working themselves out by having faith. I know that The Movie Chair will reach children and touch many hearts.

Mangrove Sands The Enchanted Seaworld The Epic Journey

L.J. Nilsson’s captivating children’s narrative, The Enchanted Sea World: The Epic Journey, takes us on a journey filled with wonder, magic, and transformative life lessons. The story centers around six children, each grappling with a challenging past, whose lives take an extraordinary turn when they are whisked away from their gloomy existence by Parlow the Pelican and spirited to an enchanted sea world.

Their induction into this fantastical realm comes in the form of a mystical seaweed necklace inscribed with a golden ingot and a code of silence. This talisman becomes their key to unlocking the marvels of an underwater kingdom where they are free to explore and interact with an array of sea creatures and birds.

In this aquatic haven, the children embark on adventures and are taught valuable life lessons by their mentors. Nilsson skillfully infuses the narrative with a remarkable sense of whimsy and imagination that forms the backbone of this delightful book. The relationships between the children, depicted in numerous heartwarming vignettes, serve as the story’s emotional core. Scenes like Jake’s concern for Saige when she first arrives at his school, or Jake’s friendly races with Wanjee are strikingly poignant and give a refreshing authenticity to the narrative.

The enchantment of The Enchanted Sea World: The Epic Journey is further elevated by the author’s inclusion of Swedish words, thoughtfully translated into English for the readers. This element adds a unique cultural dimension to the narrative. Each character stands out with its unique personality, contributing to the narrative’s vibrancy and appeal.

Despite some pacing issues, with the story occasionally seeming to leap between scenarios without extensive elaboration, the narrative retains a certain charm. One could argue that the brisk pace aligns well with a child’s perspective, who might appreciate the excitement without demanding elaborate detail. This subtle pacing strategy ensures that the narrative remains magical and adventurous without being overwhelming. This approach makes The Enchanted Sea World: The Epic Journey a stimulating read for children, creating just the right amount of thrill.

The Enchanted Sea World: The Epic Journey by L. J. Nilsson is a mesmerizing children’s book, brimming with fantasy, exploration, and character-driven narratives. This magical journey through an undersea kingdom offers young readers an enchanting escape while subtly imparting life lessons, making it a tranquil and rewarding reading experience.

TimeOuts Titanic

Timeouts are a way of life for Zoey. She is put in a timeout for virtually anything she does wrong, from the most insignificant wrongdoing to the really serious stuff. Zoey knows little else other than being in timeout–it’s really gone too far. One day, while in class, Zoey’s timeout experience is taken to a whole new level. In the midst of being put on the spot to answer a difficult question, time stops. Zoey looks around, only to discover she is the only one still able to move. What is happening? Has she just reached the ultimate in timeouts?

TimeOuts Titanic, by Dr. Zo, is a brilliant chapter book for young readers based on the adventures of three middle school friends. Zoey, the book’s main character, teams up with sidekicks Noah and Destiny to take the be-all-end-all trip into the past to stop someone or something from breaking time. Zoey, the queen of timeouts, is the only one who is capable of stopping this from happening.

It’s been a long time since I have enjoyed a children’s chapter book as much as I did this one by Dr. Zo. The time-hop idea has been taken to a whole new level. I love the idea of applying the term timeout to both time freezing and time travel.

Dr. Zo’s style of writing is particularly appealing. Humor, suspense, and excellent one-liners permeate Zo’s text. The first-person narrative combined with elements of fantasy and historical fiction makes this book a winner for middle schoolers.

TimeOuts Titanic, by Dr. Zo, is an excellent middle-grade book to use when trying to entice reluctant readers into exploring new genres. Zo’s characters have both prominent personalities and significant responsibilities–a perfect combination for young readers on their own adventures in reading.

Mother’s Bread Dough

Leo’s father has gone off to war, and he is now the man of the house. He and his mother make plans to bide their time making delicious bread together. While they go about the task of baking bread, they are startled to find they must evacuate their home. Leo’s mother, determined to save a family treasure, prepares her sourdough starter for the journey away from their home. Leo and his mother flee but not without their fresh baked bread and the remainder of the dough. The last-minute decision to take the bread on their journey may just be the one thing that saves them and everyone they encounter.

Mother’s Bread Dough, written by Tuula Pere and illustrated by Stefan Turk, is one of the most heartwarming children’s stories I have come across in many years. Pere has incorporated historical fiction with a wonderful tale of hope, love, and faith. Leo and his mother are the bearers of many blessings as they travel, and readers will watch in wonder as his mother’s bread continues to provide food for many along their journey and beyond.

Illustrations are such an important part of any children’s picture book. Some hit the mark, and others don’t quite live up to the storyline. I have to say that Stefan Turk has exceeded all expectations with the illustrations of Leo, his mother, and their very trying journey. The mood created by the illustrations is spot-on. I absolutely adore the style Turk uses throughout the book.

Mother’s Bread Dough, written by Tuula Pere and illustrated by Stefan Turk is a highly recommend book to any elementary teacher seeking to incorporate a truly impactful story into their Reading or Social Studies curriculum. This is truly a beautifully written tale for the ages.

I Want To Inspire and Motivate Others

Miles McAlister Author Interview

Look Within II: Environment is Key follows an ambitious and intelligent young boy who wants to help his village thrive after hearing the elders’ concerns about fuel sources. What was the inspiration for your story?

Look Within II, is the follow-up to my first ever published book! Look Within: a story about discovering the key to success. After receiving so much positive feedback, and the overwhelming love and support especially from young people. I was moved to expand the world created in the first book, and dive deeper into some of the aspects of personal development that many of the readers resonated with. Most notable the importance of environment.

Kim wants to fit in but struggles with interacting with his peers despite his intelligence. What was the inspiration for the main character’s traits and challenges?

The inspiration for our main character’s story was sparked by conversations I’ve had, mainly with young people, about the importance of looking within to identify our values, morals, and the goals we set for ourselves before seeking outside validation. We all find ourselves in various environments: school, work, community, clubs, religious groups, etc. From these environments, we naturally develop behaviors and traits, sometimes to “fit in.” However, once we truly understand ourselves—our likes, dislikes, and the things we need to help us grow and thrive—we become aware of how to shape our environment to suit US instead of trying to “fit in” to an environment that doesn’t align with our goals or bring us true happiness.

What were some educational aspects that were important for you to include in this children’s book?

At this stage of my life, I am genuinely excited about learning. The most significant difference between my current mindset and me as a child in school is when I began seeking out subjects that genuinely sparked my interest. From my experience, the educational system often adopts a one-size-fits-all approach, neglecting the importance of personal introspection and taking responsibility for learning in alignment with our individual goals. Through an easily readable and well-illustrated story, my goal was to convey this message and inspire others to embark on their unique journey of growth, igniting their enthusiasm for learning and pursuing their genuine interests. I firmly believe that if I had been exposed to this perspective earlier in life, it would have profoundly impacted me. Therefore, my goal is to utilize these stories as a means to inspire and motivate others.

What is the next book in the Look Within series that you are working on and when will it be available?

I would really like to see more feedback, and support on my work up to this point. But I can definitely see the Look Within series as a trilogy! And depending on what conversations come from LOOK WITHIN books 1 & 2 a third book could be on the way very soon! So please PLEASE support and leave feedback, and I’m always very appreciative, and will continue to inspire through writing and working in my purpose.

Within the realm of a singular chair lies the potential for a multitude of adventures, fostering a lifetime of cherished moments.

In the enchanting narrative, The Movie Chair, by Shari Borkin, readers are introduced to a remarkable entity residing within the confines of a movie theater—a chair imbued with a profound sense of personification. This extraordinary chair assumes a guardian role, providing solace and reassurance to those fortunate enough to occupy its plush seat. With unwavering devotion, a vibrant red movie theater chair tends to the needs of children, shielding their innocent eyes and ears during moments of fright within the cinematic realm and embracing them tenderly when they feel vulnerable and alone. In essence, this chair becomes akin to a nurturing parent, safeguarding its young charges from any menacing visuals. Can you fathom the profound comfort one would experience with such a benevolent companion during their cinematic ventures? Nightmares would lose their grip as the chair dutifully ensures your well-being.

Of particular note is the poignant instance of a theater renovation, which evokes a palpable sense of melancholy as the transformation alters the very fabric of the familiar surroundings. As with many individuals, adapting to change proves challenging; however, the demands of running a business necessitate periodic upgrades and adjustments. The chair’s journey continues within the confines of a city dump, yet heartwarmingly, the children still derive joy from its presence. Despite the less-than-ideal location for youthful recreation, they find solace in making the most of their newfound circumstances. Perhaps the most delightful revelation lies in some children’s realization of the chair’s inherent value, considering taking it home. In reality, numerous individuals encounter remarkable furniture left for disposal, only to be eagerly embraced and incorporated into their homes. The whimsy and boundless spirit of children persists undeterred, transcending external circumstances. The ability to carry a soft spot for cherished memories into adulthood remains a source of perpetual joy.

His dreams of seeing the village thrive fuel his efforts, and he puts all his energy into inventing something that will make all the difference in their lives.

Look Within II: Environment is Key, by Miles McAlister, is the story of an especially ambitious young boy with dreams of not only becoming an inventor but helping his village overcome the struggles that threaten their way of life. Kim, the book’s main character, is different from the other young people his age. McAlister has created a shining example of a young person destined for great things. He is relatable in that he is thoughtful and wise, but he also struggles with wanting to interact with others his age and not really understanding how to make that happen.

The author has incorporated the perfect blend of fantasy and realistic fiction and handed young readers an inspiring tale of hope. This is truly a remarkable addition to children’s fiction.

I highly recommend Look Within II: Environment is Key, by Miles McAlister to teachers who would like to introduce students to a more scientific way of thinking. I can see this book easily blending into a STEM curriculum in any elementary or early middle school classroom.

Emotional Mastery Is A Journey

MM Hoshaw Author Interview

Dyami and the Gobi Crystal follows a junior angel who discovers the people she has been sent to watch are in danger and must decide if she should help them. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

My inspiration was the Book of Enoch with angels called “watchers.” I imagined the watchers would be the scribes for all records. Inspired by the Kabbalah (or Qabalah), I contrasted the angelic and earthly realms. The Dukán represented heaven on earth with no wars, illnesses, or hunger. Their perfect lives also varied little. The Naga was the destabilizing force which introduced dualism and growth.

Dyami’s story is a coming-of-age tale where she has to realize that choices have consequences. What were some driving ideals behind your character’s development?

Dyami approached the world from a naïve, angelic perspective. She gave and shared freely with others. She didn’t realize some weighed everything by how much it benefited them.

Dyami knew only gratitude, joy, and celebration before her assignment. She couldn’t remain in that blissful state with her heart bond, the corbatu. To properly document records, she needed to feel others’ fears and pain. She didn’t know how to separate their feelings from her own, and became overwhelmed.

She wanted to prove she could be successful. She was passed over for more active assignments. When she became a watcher, she thought it meant staying quiet and taking notes.

What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?

A healthy culture values diversity and creativity. Everyone suffers if personal appearance, music or self-expression are condemned.

Emotional mastery is a journey. Heal, forgive, then integrate painful experiences to return to a peaceful center.

Some people are parasitic. The analogy of the sucker balls is a warning about those who intentionally drain others.

Life can feel lonely. Often, the way out of depression is asking others for help.

Exchanging rights for safety and necessities affect a race’s freedom. It’s analogous to the frog in a heated pot of water. Most Dukan aren’t aware what is happening, and most who know feel powerless to change it.

What is the next book in the Galactic Guardian series about, and when will it be available?

I am 75% complete with the first draft of Dyami and the Sigil of Power. It will be available mid-2024.

Dyami returns to the magical world of Assiya as she strives to become a powerful guardian. Armed with the sorcerer’s staff, Dyami must fight the menacing Samael before she graduates from the Guardian Academy. A hundred years have passed, and the king and queen have become much more controlling. Dyami helps four volunteers who must awaken from the forgetting fog and discover their life’s purpose. With the aid of a wise sorcerer, Dyami unknowingly summons the sigil of power. But will it be enough to protect the volunteers from the King and Queen’s insatiable thirst for power and defeat her greatest foe? The people’s fate is in her hands. This is a story about the many faces of power.

A Narnia-like world with a power-hungry queen and king

Dyami is a junior angel, assigned to a planet as watcher where magical beings teach the gentle Dukán fantastic abilities. Like a reporter, she must document events onto her gobi crystal to save them for eternity. She wants to be the perfect watcher, which means not interfering in mortal lives. Her specialty is time travel, which is as easy as breathing.

Her mentor is a shape-shifting dragon. In her travels, she angers a grumpy sorcerer and makes friends with a quirky fairy.

She falls in love with the Dukán who can dance mid-air or grow ripe strawberries in seconds. However, their perfect lives are boring as every day is the same. A visiting king and queen promise them excitement and change if together they build a new domain. As Dyami feared, the royals soon make the Dukán slaves.

Dyami’s heart breaks seeing her new friends suffer, while foreign emotions like fear and anger overwhelm her. If she interferes, she risks being punished and banished from the angelic realm.

This fast-paced adventure uses allegory and fantasy to discuss duality, the Tree of Life, and viewing outside time. It’s perfect for those who enjoyed children’s classics like The Chronicles of Narnia or A Wrinkle in Time.
