From Depression to Contentment: A Self-Therapy Guide is a book that provides help for readers who are experiencing depression and desire an alternative to outside therapy. It presents well-researched techniques and methods that are straightforward to implement. Why was this an important book for you to write?
Actually, the book title addresses depression because my publisher is very firm: each book should seem to limit itself to one problem. However, psychotherapy doesn’t actually work like that. With suitable modification, essentially the same tools will provide a path out of chronic anxiety, addictions, anger… basically, human suffering. This is because, as I say in the book, classifications like in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual are basically science fiction.
Second, the therapy bit is only halfway, from ongoing agony to “normal,” which is the walking wounded. Then the tools of positive psychology and Buddhist psychology allow you to rise WAY above that.
This book is the distillation of decades of my personal experience, study, and therapeutic practice. I wrote it to be of service to as many people as possible, then a few more.
How much research did you undertake for this book and how much time did it take to put it all together?
In a way, no research at all — specifically for this book. When I started university, I decided not to go into Medicine because it was a 6-year course, then at least 4 more years of training. Then, overall I spent 14-and-a-half years as a student. And in my profession, you don’t ever stop learning. A condition of being registered is continuous study. And even though I retired in 2013, I have kept up with new research, just from interest.
So, while this research and study were not for the book, all that information and knowledge is in there. Well, it is, up to the publication date. It’s annoying, but when I sent my time machine in for service, they returned it to an alternative universe. What’s happened since is only marginal, but it doesn’t matter all that much, because therapy, including self-therapy, will work if three conditions are present, as Carl Rogers has described. These are empathy, love of the kind Buddha, Jesus and many other sages have told us to give to everyone, and genuineness. That last one is that it has to be honest.
What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?
• Chronic emotional suffering beyond what the situation warrants is always due to the interaction of
several factors. One of them is childhood trauma, as seen through the child’s eyes.
• Depression, chronic anxiety and the like are not due to faulty brain chemistry.
• Using the tools I teach in the last part of the book, you can live a contented life in any situation.
What is one thing that you hope readers take away from From Depression to Contentment?
The more you give, the more you get, and also the more you grow.

Perceiving Depression is an intellectual journey that prompts readers to consider new perspectives on mental illness and look at a mix of historical, religious, and scientific approaches to understanding human experiences. Why was this an important book for you to write?
To try to know myself, in moments of deep emotional crisis, or in short, to know in depth what is happening to me and the possibility of controlling myself, with the help of people who in my opinion represent the greatest moral authority or the truth of the things that can be applied in my life.
What were some of the goals you set for yourself as a writer in this book?
The exploration of the things that so intensely affect me, but in the realm of self-knowledge, even though such inquiry terrified me, nevertheless at the same time I felt protected by the promise of the truth in which I always believed if I stuck to Socratic philosophy through reading the classical Greek Plato. In order to regain the security of which I felt I had lost in a resounding way; due to the intense and morbid fears to which he suffered daily.
Did you find anything in your research of this story that surprised you?
Yes, because unexpectedly, without really intending to, I discovered the thoughts that violently subjugate me and arouse intense fear, and above all, to be able to see them in their essence or reality, that is, as senseless or merely absurd thoughts.
What do you hope readers take away from Perceiving Depression?
May they allow themselves to know themselves by breaking down the barriers or fears that often prevent us from seeking the truth, that is, that under solid guidance it is possible not to fall into deviations or misdirection for all those who, out of necessity or interest, wish to cross the oceans of thought; which, like a sailboat, is carried by the prevailing winds where we do not want to go. However, this knowledge, of diseases due to psychiatric imbalance, does not promise a cure without specialized medication, but it can contribute powerfully to helping us not to fall into the downward spiral of uncontrollable fears. And I want to add that, for me, it allowed me to conclude my working life, after 32 years of work, of which almost 27 were developed in harsh work environments (as an operations engineer on offshore oil platforms), a period in which, for various reasons, I experienced strong relapses, which I, not without little difficulty, overcame and even more, allowed me to conclude in a normal way with the end of my working life.

Force Majeure follows a young woman struggling with mental illness as she embarks on a new chapter in her life in Geneva. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?
Even though I took some liberties in the portrayal of certain events, the book is based on real-life experiences of mine. It began as an ordinary account of moments that I initially had no intention of sharing with the world. But in trying to deal with the experiences portrayed in the book, I understood that writing them allowed me to better cope with them. And with the help of disguising it as fiction to make it more entertaining, it could help others cope with similar experiences, too. That was the main drive for writing the story: the aspiration to share this story with others so that someone, somewhere, might feel understood, validated, and supported.
The writing in your story is very artful and creative. Was it a conscious effort to create a story in this fashion, or is this style of writing reflective of your writing style in general?
Because I am quite an impatient person who loses focus embarrassingly quickly, the shift in writing styles came as an opportunity to write the kind of book that I would have liked to have read, using the changing writing styles to keep audiences surprised and hopefully engaged. On this matter, a quote that has always really spoken to me is from renowned filmmaker Quentin Tarantino, who always gives the same advice to new filmmakers: “Go and make the movie that nobody has seen because you haven’t made it”.
The use of cinematic tools and various writing styles also gave greater insight into the character of Carla, her creativity, and her way of conceiving and perceiving life. Cinema is in her veins, which inevitably influences her at all times, like writing an entire screenplay out of the premise of waiting in line at the bank. And the use she makes of these different styles allows us to know a little better how she copes with the world around her.
Carla’s battle with her mental health shows the complexity of this illness, the good moments and the bad, and how they blur together, often unseen to those on the outside. What is one thing about mental illness that you think is misrepresented in the media?
The fact that depression is always apparent and visible. Quite often, it is worn in secret by people who everyone thinks have a great, happy life. Depression and its effects are hard to notice because those who suffer it often try to hide it. We can see it in our younger generations, with suicide being the leading cause of death among young people, at least in Spain. Nothing happens until it does, and everyone wonders how this could have happened. There is greater attention being paid to the importance of mental health nowadays, but I think that far more can be done in terms of raising awareness about the universal impact of depression, the importance of seeking help, the feasibility of recovery, and the necessary creation of safe spaces for people to express themselves without fear of judgment.
What is one thing that you hope readers take away from Force Majeure?
That suicide should no longer be a taboo word and we should be able to discuss it as openly as in the book. So my hope is readers are able to find in this book a way to better cope with their inner demons and a way to understand and support all others who are fighting hard to do so.

Author Samuel C.A. comprehensibly explains the science behind why we struggle to deal with problems and gives some excellent advice about what we can do to change our mental habits.
The author touches upon subjects like the gut-brain axis, sleep, and support systems, showing us that the key to a positive mindset is deeper than merely our thoughts. Each topic is broken down into manageable chapters and interactive tasks, encouraging the reader to begin their own self-help journey from the beginning of the book. In addition, the book was structured in a way that promoted a change in the reader. Samuel C.A. uses checklists, bold headings, and direct instructions for an active learning experience.
After checking out Samuel C.A.’s music recommendations and following his instructions for meditation techniques, I was surprised at the positive effect I felt in such little time. I am convinced that, used over an extended period, this book could genuinely change the reader’s outlook on life.
At first, I felt like there was a lot of scientific information to digest, but Samuel reviews previously-mentioned vocabulary throughout the book, creating a more precise understanding as the book goes on. I would say that the book could have been organized better for greater fluidity, as it sometimes seems to jump from topic to topic. However, this was easy to overlook, as I learned much about myself and how the mind functions.
The book was highly relevant to present-day life, with references to the Covid pandemic and how this has affected our mental state. Samuel C.A. also explores how culture and assimilation affect our mental health. This was unique to other self-help books I had read in the past. I feel as if Samuel C.A. recognizes the difficulties we face in society and empathizes with our struggle to remain mentally healthy. He avoids sounding preachy and reminds the reader of the benefits they can receive by following his advice. He also makes each step easier for the reader, providing set time frames and routines. This is more than a book; it is a guide to improving your life from the core.
