An Empty House Doesn’t Sneeze
Posted by Literary Titan

An Empty House Doesn’t Sneeze offers a poignant and insightful glimpse into the complexities of growing up during one of history’s most tumultuous times—World War II. The novel centers on Scotty Johannsen, a 15-year-old boy navigating the challenges of adolescence while the world around him is engulfed in chaos. Through Scotty’s eyes, we witness the trials of friendship, family dynamics, and the struggles of coming of age in a period marked by uncertainty and loss.
Despite its heavy themes, this book is surprisingly heartwarming and nostalgic. Richardson masterfully portrays the day-to-day life of a teenager in 1943, blending humor and warmth with the serious issues of the era. His writing captures the spirit of the time with a light touch, making the narrative both engaging and accessible, even as it tackles the profound effects of the war on those living in the United States. Richardson’s respectful and thoughtful portrayal of World War II and its impact on ordinary people, particularly teenagers, adds depth to the story. It’s fascinating to imagine how a typical teenager like Scotty managed to navigate such a complex and challenging environment. One of the novel’s greatest strengths is the author’s ability to depict this experience authentically and with sensitivity. The characters, especially the siblings Greta, Scotty, and Erik, are richly developed and integral to Scotty’s journey toward maturity. Their interactions, full of both tension and tenderness, are some of the most memorable moments in the book. The way they find ways to cope with their circumstances and grow closer as a family is both touching and realistic. The chapters are well-structured, and the writing is clear and compelling, making it difficult to put the book down.
If you’re looking for a reflective yet adventurous slice-of-life novel set against the backdrop of World War II, An Empty House Doesn’t Sneeze is the perfect choice. It’s a beautifully crafted story that will resonate with anyone interested in the impacts of history’s most challenging moments.

The Secret of the Magic eyePad: Putney Hicks Inventor Adventures–Book 1
Posted by Literary Titan

The Secret of the Magic eyePad: Putney Hicks Inventor Adventures, by Marsha Tuff, presents an engaging story about Putney Hicks, a young and socially awkward girl navigating the complexities of middle school within the unfamiliar terrain of a prestigious STEM academy. Set against the backdrop of a school populated by students from diverse backgrounds and higher social classes, the narrative deftly explores Putney’s internal struggles with self-doubt and social anxiety as she adjusts to this new, high-pressure environment. The plot takes a fascinating turn with the introduction of a mysterious gadget—a sentient and quirky artificial intelligence known as the “eyePad.” This twist propels Putney into a whirlwind of unexpected adventures, blending mystery and innovation in a way that is both entertaining and thought-provoking.
Marsha Tuff skillfully intertwines middle school drama with elements of mystery and adventure, creating a delightful tapestry of characters and scenarios that captivate the reader. Putney’s journey is particularly compelling, as she emerges as a resilient and inspiring young inventor. Her character resonates strongly with readers, offering a portrayal of a young female protagonist who is both well-crafted and relatable.
The book’s charm lies in its ability to weave a story reminiscent of classic tales like Nancy Drew while infusing it with modern scientific and technological elements. This blend not only entertains but also educates, making the story a valuable read for young audiences. The narrative’s creativity, excellent writing, and inspiring messages stand out, providing lessons in perseverance and self-discovery. Furthermore, Putney Hicks serves as an exceptional role model for young girls and women aspiring to excel in STEM fields. Her character demonstrates that not only can they succeed in such areas, but they can also thrive and lead. This novel is a refreshing addition to the genre, offering both enjoyment and empowerment.
The Secret of the Magic eyePad is a captivating read that I thoroughly enjoyed. I eagerly anticipate the next installment in Putney Hicks’ adventures.

Sunscreen Shower
Posted by Literary Titan

Sunscreen Shower, by J. Paul Rieger, weaves together multiple interconnected storylines, centering on Kev Dixit, a dedicated Baltimore police detective investigating the enigmatic case of the Matthiesens’ alleged murder-suicide. Running parallel to Kev’s investigation is the story of Klos, a man consumed by a quest for revenge, navigating a journey filled with anger, pain, and potential redemption. Adding a contrasting narrative are two writers, Chris and Alan, who face significant challenges in bringing their innovative ideas to life.
Rieger’s exploration of human nature and the unintended consequences of our actions is both profound and thought-provoking. Themes of justice and morality are intricately woven throughout the interconnected stories, providing a rich tapestry of narrative depth. The author skillfully alternates between intense, fast-paced action scenes and slower, more introspective moments, transitioning seamlessly from the chaos of a violent armed robbery to the poignant grief of a man mourning his father. This balance keeps the reader engaged and invested in the unfolding drama. Rieger ensures that cases are solved through meticulous police investigations rather than fortuitous breaks, adding a layer of authenticity to the story. This attention to detail makes the narrative feel genuine and engaging, particularly for fans of police procedurals.
Sunscreen Shower ambitiously weaves numerous smaller narratives within its main plot; this approach offers a variety of perspectives and rich storylines. Each subplot brings its unique flavor to the overall narrative, contributing to the book’s intricate tapestry. Although I feel some storylines might benefit from a little more development, they add to the book’s overall sense of complexity and intrigue. Readers will find themselves mesmerized by the diverse cast of characters, each bringing their own motivations and actions to the forefront.
Sunscreen Shower remains an interesting read, particularly for those who enjoy suspense novels and police procedurals. The book offers a unique blend of intense action and emotional introspection, making it a worthwhile addition to the genre.

Everyone Has A Story
Posted by Literary_Titan
Otro accidente en Asturias follows the owner of a local surf school who discovers the human remains on the beach. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?
I’ve traveled extensively in Spain and the north coast of the country is a relatively undiscovered marvel, from the Basque Country to Galicia. The people, the food (!), the beaches, the cultures (they are all unique) and the landscape helped me come up with the idea for a trilogy whose second book is Otro accidente en Asturias. The first is set in the Basque Country and is called Un detective accidental en Donostia.
Michael does not just fall into a mystery but a journey of self-discovery. What are some things that you find interesting about the human condition that you think make for great fiction?
I believe everyone has a story to be told, whether it’s about themselves or something that occurs to them. The universality of the human experience, even though circumstances differ, drives great fiction.
One thing that stands out in your novel is the level of detail in the scenery. Readers are drawn in and can easily imagine themselves in Gijón. Why choose this place and time for the setting of the story?
Because Gijón is AWESOME! Also because there is a strong surf culture there as well as tremendous cuisine and, of course, cider. You can’t help but fall in love with it all.
What is the next book that you are working on, and when will it be available?
I’m currently working on the third book of the trilogy which is based in Galicia.

Otro Accidente En Asturias
Posted by Literary Titan

The Dusty Road to Homicide
Posted by Literary Titan

LeeAnne James’s novel The Dusty Road to Homicide chronicles the challenging life of Dusty Samson, a character whose early family struggles set him on a difficult path. The narrative explores Dusty’s descent into criminality, shaped by his environment and limited opportunities. His journey is marked by attempts at redemption that are often thwarted by his circumstances, painting a poignant picture of a life grappling with societal and personal hurdles.
James’s portrayal of Dusty offers an exploration of the stereotypes often associated with criminal characters. With limited education and fewer opportunities, Dusty’s choices, though understandable in his context, lead to short-term gains with long-term detrimental effects. The most impactful moments in the story are when Dusty encounters chances for change, especially those presented by his mother and friends, only to see them slip away. The book’s narrative style is straightforward, almost clinical, mirroring the report-like recounting of Dusty’s life events. This approach effectively conveys the tragic and disheartening nature of his experiences. In this storytelling approach, the focus on exposition provides a straightforward, direct narrative, although it does somewhat curtail deeper reader engagement. The book certainly has poignant moments, yet there seems to be room for a richer exploration of its themes, potentially heightening the emotional impact.
The Dusty Road to Homicide presents a clear-eyed look at the ramifications of a life constrained by difficult circumstances. The narrative style is familiar, and it successfully captures the resonant story of navigating life’s complexities and the challenging choices faced in adversity.
