The Significance of Curly Hair: A Loving Memoir of Life and Loss

Kara Zajac’s The Significance of Curly Hair is an emotional and heartfelt memoir that delves into the deep bond between the author and her grandmother. At its core, the book is about family, love, loss, and the legacy of memories we hold onto after someone we love passes. Through vivid storytelling, Zajac chronicles moments of joy, heartbreak, and profound personal reflection, offering a touching tribute to a woman who shaped her life.

What struck me first was Zajac’s candid and unfiltered voice. She doesn’t shy away from raw emotion. Take, for example, the chapter where she describes trying to reach her grandmother before she passed. The desperation in her voice, coupled with the chaos of airport logistics, made my chest tighten as if I were the one missing that final goodbye. Her ability to weave universal feelings of guilt and longing into personal anecdotes was compelling. It reminded me of how we all struggle with the inevitability of time slipping through our fingers.

Zajac’s use of flashbacks brings a rich and layered texture to the memoir. Scenes from her childhood, like riding the school bus with her grandmother running alongside in the woods, are not just sweet but illustrative of the eccentric and loving relationship they shared. These moments balance the book’s heavier themes, giving readers a sense of the joy and laughter that defined their bond. At times, though, I found the transitions between past and present a bit abrupt, which occasionally interrupted the emotional flow.

One of the most memorable parts of the book is the chapter where Zajac reflects on her grandmother’s fading health and the helplessness she felt. The scene in the airport, where a stranger offers her comfort, beautifully illustrates humanity’s capacity for kindness. It’s this interplay between personal grief and the support of others that makes the book so moving.

The Significance of Curly Hair is an evocative and deeply personal memoir that will resonate with anyone who has ever loved and lost. Zajac’s writing is vivid and heartfelt, making you feel as though you are right there with her through every laugh, tear, and bittersweet memory. I would highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy reflective family stories or who might be navigating their own journeys of grief.

Hope is Our Story

Jessica Goldmuntz Stokes Author Interview

In Seeking Clarity in the Labyrinth: A Daughter’s Journey Through Alzheimer’s, you share your family’s experiences following your mother’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis, how you navigated her care, and the grief of losing her to this disease. Why was this an important book for you to share?

When it was clear we were well into our journey with Alzheimer’s, and my Uncle and Aunt passed (complications with Parkinson’s & Alzheimer’s) I started writing to heal myself. As I shared it with my Dad, it became clear our story may be able to help others. The journey of losing a loved one includes so many emotions–fear, anger, pain, sadness, love, grief. My hope is our story can help others in their journey.

I appreciated the candid nature with which you told your family’s story. What was the hardest thing for you to write about?

Much of the story was written in relatively ‘real-time.’ As I read it now, I am not sure if I would have been able to capture some of the raw, intense quality of my writing. Her passing ended up being this beautiful gift for both myself and my dad. If I went back and wrote it now, I do not know if it would have translated. This, however, was not the hardest part–those sections in the middle, when I was angry with her and the situation…those parts were hard to write about.

What is a common misconception you feel people have about caring for a family member suffering from Alzheimer’s?

Too often we believe we have ‘lost’ our loved ones. Yes, in many ways they are lost or ‘gone’ but, truly, we have just lost a version of them. Their essence is still there. They may not talk or walk, and often our loved ones may be angry or even nasty, but they are still human. They are still our people. If we are able to remember that, remember them in their entirety, we can help care for them more easily. If we can meet our loved ones where they are, we are truly seeing them.

What is one thing you hope your readers take away from your experience?

I hope my readers laugh, cry and embrace the sweet and fragile joy of life, in its raw, sometimes nasty and tragic ways. Life is beautiful, in all the ways we are able to see it.

Scrambled or Sunny-Side Up?: Living Your Best Life after Losing Your Greatest Love

Loren Ridinger, a lifelong entrepreneur and philanthropist, is best known for co-founding Market America and SHOP.COM alongside her husband, JR Ridinger. Their story began when Loren met JR at just 18 years old, drawn into his magnetic energy and shared vision. From that moment, they built a partnership anchored in love, trust, and unwavering encouragement. JR’s ambition gave birth to Market America and SHOP.COM, a groundbreaking global e-commerce platform designed to empower entrepreneurs and offer consumers a smarter way to shop.

In Scrambled or Sunny-Side Up, Ridinger offers a deeply personal reflection on their extraordinary relationship, their journey as business partners, and her struggle to navigate the world after JR’s sudden death in August 2022. Raw and unfiltered, the memoir captures life both before and after his passing. Ridinger candidly shares her regrets—moments left unsaid, sentiments unspoken—while urging readers to embrace life and love fully, never assuming tomorrow is guaranteed.

Ridinger’s narrative walks a delicate line between relatability and privilege. She speaks earnestly about her pain and healing, yet the luxurious backdrop of private yachts and multimillion-dollar homes may feel distant to the average reader. Still, the universal emotions of love, grief, and uncertainty transcend the material world. These are feelings we all know—loss that shakes us, love that defines us, and the struggle to rediscover ourselves in the aftermath. While some readers may find Ridinger’s lifestyle detached from their own realities, her vulnerability resonates. She does not shy away from questions of identity, purpose, and healing. Her journey—marked by profound sorrow and the search for meaning without her partner—offers inspiration for anyone who has loved, lost, and struggled to move forward.

Scrambled or Sunny-Side Up is more than a memoir. It’s a call to live intentionally, to love deeply, and to value every fleeting moment. Ridinger’s story is a reminder that even in unimaginable loss, there is hope, resilience, and the power to carry on. Whether you’ve experienced a loss as seismic as Loren Ridinger’s or simply grappled with change, her reflections will touch your heart and encourage you to live without regrets.

Walk a Mile in My Shoes: Surviving Life’s Challenges

Paul Bradford’s Walk a Mile in My Shoes delves into the life of a man scarred by childhood trauma, exposing a harrowing journey from victim to perpetrator. Bradford recounts his life with unflinching honesty, refusing to excuse his actions as an adult while tracing their origins to the extreme hardships he endured as a child. The narrative begins with Bradford’s recollections of an abusive, alcoholic father whom he blames for his mother’s death. A pivotal moment in his life unfolds during a hitchhiking trip to his grandparents’ home, where he endured molestation, a secret he reveals for the first time in this book. The story continues through his unstable upbringing, bouncing between foster families, and the damaging influences that shaped his understanding of sexuality. Both the church and manipulative older boys contributed to a distorted, exploitative perception of intimacy and boundaries. Bradford’s use of vivid, colloquial language, what he describes as “hillbilly” expressions, paints a raw, authentic picture of his early years. His descriptions evoke the atmosphere of a bygone rural society, adding texture to the narrative.

As a piece of writing, the book is well-crafted. Bradford’s grammar is precise, and his articulation is engaging. Despite the deeply unsettling themes of abuse, violence, and exploitation, the narrative holds the reader’s attention through its clarity and flow. However, the focus of the book tilts heavily toward the darker chapters of his life. Positive memories, though present, sometimes feel rushed and underdeveloped. These moments, when they appear, offer glimpses of light but I feel lack the depth and exploration given to his tragedies. A more balanced portrayal, with a fuller depiction of happier times, could enrich the narrative and serve as a reminder that not all of his childhood was consumed by pain.

While the book is well-written, the content may not appeal to everyone. Bradford’s candid acknowledgment of his past wrongdoings and his struggle with trauma elicits some sympathy, but it does not mitigate the gravity of his actions as an adult. His experiences underscore how a lack of education and societal attitudes like “boys will be boys” can perpetuate cycles of harm. Yet, as someone who endured similar trauma, Bradford’s choices remain difficult to reconcile. Walk a Mile in My Shoes is a raw, unsettling account of a life shaped by adversity and mistakes. While it may resonate with readers drawn to unfiltered stories of human frailty and resilience, the graphic and disturbing subject matter makes it a challenging read.

Difficult Truths

Heather Piper Author Interview

In Memoirs of Lady Greta memories, reflections on family relationships, and the hardships of a life well-lived are conveyed through a cat’s perspective. Where did the idea for this unique novel come from?

The idea for Memoirs of Lady Greta came from a deeply personal journey of reflection and healing. Over a decade ago, I began writing as a coping mechanism to process loss, particularly the sudden passing of my brother, which brought lasting grief but also forced me to confront my past, present, and future. Through this process, I discovered how much of my life had been shaped by experiences of bullying, verbal abuse, and manipulation by some family members—contrasted with the unconditional love of others. These reflections, coupled with surviving dire health challenges that nearly claimed my life, gave me the clarity and strength to finally publish this book now that I’ve regained my health.

The character of Greta was inspired by my beloved cat, Pudd’in, who lived for 20 years. After her passing, I reflected on her life, imagining her perspective on the rocky early years before she became my cherished companion. I infused her experiences with my own to create the adventures in Memoirs of Lady Greta, blending our journeys into a story of resilience, self-discovery, hope, and love.

What was your favorite scene in this story?

My favorite scene in the story is the chapter “A Silly Car Ride.” It holds a special place in my heart because it brings my beloved grandpap to life. Despite having two wooden prosthetic legs and laboring in a sawmill until the day he passed—at a time when prosthetics were neither comfortable nor easy to use—he remained one of the most hardworking, resilient, and kindhearted people I’ve ever known. Writing this chapter allowed me to honor his memory, share our family’s roots and legacy with my nephew, and ultimately preserve it for the world.

This chapter is also close to my heart because it reflects the special bond I shared with my nephew, the son of my late brother. As he grew up, we spent countless hours together in the car, whether heading to after-school activities or simply hanging out. To pass the time, we’d create funny stories that left us laughing uncontrollably—sometimes to the point where he couldn’t even make a sound. Those moments of pure joy inspired this chapter, which serves as a tribute to my pappy, brother, and nephew—three generations of Pipers who continue to shape my life.

I enjoyed the depth of the main character, Lady Greta. What was your process to bring that character to life?

Bringing Lady Greta to life required me to take a raw, unfiltered look at my reality—both the negative and the positive. It wasn’t an easy process, as it meant coming to terms with difficult truths about my life and experiences. I began the story by revealing her end, inspired by my own journey of facing severe health challenges. When no one listened to me or took my concerns seriously, I was shamed for speaking out. These experiences, which later nearly cost me my life, became the catalyst for the story. Once I allowed myself to truly observe and reflect, the story almost wrote itself—I just needed to be honest enough to put it into words.

What is one thing you hope readers take away from this book?

This book is multilayered, offering something for everyone—whether it’s simply enjoying the story, feeling inspired to adopt a pet, or reflecting on life’s unexpected journey. I hope readers take away the importance of moving forward, savoring life’s moments, and holding onto faith that things can change for the better. No matter where we are in our personal journeys, there’s always someone who loves us and is wishing for our well-being.

The truth of a story often hinges on the perspective of the storyteller.

In her final hours, Lady Greta, an orphan adopted by the Kots, reflects on the pivotal events that led her to them. Her journey is recounted with poignant honesty, detailing her life with the Kots compared to haunting glimpses of her abusive past. As she faces death, she revisits her final adventure, offering a narrative that comes full circle with a surprising realization.

Her survival story unfolds through a kidnapping and a daring pet rescue, intertwined with the heartache and grief of losing a pet. The reader is guided from despair and doubt to a journey of faith, hope, and love.

Yet, Lady Greta’s story is more than just a straightforward tale. Told from her perspective, she omits a crucial detail that redefines the entire narrative. This twist forces the reader to question everything they’ve learned, demonstrating that perceptions can vary greatly depending on who tells the story.

Set against the backdrop of adventure, survival, and the grief of losing a pet, this narrative explores the complexities of perception, revealing that the truth is often more intricate—and no less heartbreaking—than it seems.

Grandpa’s Christmas Gift

Grandpa’s Christmas Gift, by Istvan Sanyi, is a charming holiday story that takes us to a humble village where a poor family struggles to make Christmas magical. The narrative focuses on two children, Oliver and Francesca, whose heartfelt plea to their late grandfather brings about an extraordinary miracle. Through an angel named Elsa, their grandfather grants them the joy of a beautifully decorated Christmas tree, thoughtful presents, and a feast to remember. The story culminates in a heartwarming moment of gratitude and familial love, reminding readers of the spirit of giving and the strength of family bonds.

The writing feels wonderfully nostalgic, almost like a bedtime story from another era. I loved how the snowy setting was described, it really made me imagine a cozy Christmas scene. The story’s central message—that love and kindness can create miracles—is beautifully conveyed. Grandpa’s intervention from heaven and Angel Elsa’s generosity show how even the smallest acts can change someone’s world. The scene where the angel decorates the house and leaves a note from Grandpa made me smile. It was a little predictable, but that’s part of what makes it feel like a classic Christmas tale.

Chloe Nyiri’s illustrations added a lovely charm to the book. The pictures matched the cozy tone of the story and brought the snowy village and the little family to life. One particularly endearing image was of the children dancing in the snow. It was so sweet that I found myself lingering on that page.

Grandpa’s Christmas Gift, by Istvan Sanyi, is a delightful story that will resonate with families looking for a wholesome holiday read. Its simplicity is both its charm and its limitation, but it shines brightest in its earnest message of love, faith, and generosity. I’d recommend it to young readers, parents who enjoy reading aloud, and anyone needing a little reminder of the magic of Christmas.

A More Fruitful Future

Alis Cerrahyan Author Interview

The Sound of an Ordinary Life shares with readers your journey to revisit your seven-year-old self after six decades to confront and heal from the personal challenges of a painful childhood and dysfunctional family dynamics. Why was this an important book for you to write?

The reason I wanted to write this book was mainly to confirm that I had survived my sad beginnings while letting the world know that, no matter how discouraging life is for many unsuspecting journeyers, resilience, hope, and faith are the most necessary elements in overcoming difficulties. A life is not meaningful enough unless we turn every experience into a learning platform for everyone to benefit from.

What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?

Writing The Sound of an Ordinary Life helped me find self-love, self-respect, and self-compassion, none of which I received due to my dysfunctional formative years. Though I realize many others might be going through far more challenging experiences than mine, I also know healing and giving the past pains a decent burial are crucial steps to moving forward into a more fruitful future.

What do you hope is one thing readers take away from your story?

The one thing I’d like for my readers to take away from reading my story, though the challenges they endure at any given point are anything but ordinary, the fact that there is no growth and maturity without those hardships is the most ordinary theme of life. Therefore, embracing them as a valuable lesson is way better than trying to fight against them, which would only stall our much-needed mental, emotional, and spiritual maturity.

Friends and family members can’t always be expected to be available -be it physically or emotionally; to weather our challenges with us. Trying to find a practical sense of direction during chaos often requires a quiet disposition, fortitude, and courage. When most people reach for worldly substitutes and instant gratifications to quiet their hunger for peace and validation, wisdom suggests we develop a more powerful inner self that can be better prepared for a fruitful future. The Sound of an Ordinary Life is a story that leads us to understand life is very messy and there are no shortcuts to true happiness; unless we learn to free ourselves from the emotional or the mental triggers of the past and start savoring the beauty of contentment.

Seeking Clarity in the Labyrinth: A Daughter’s Journey Through Alzheimer’s

Losing a loved one to Alzheimer’s is a journey without a roadmap. It can be mercifully brief or agonizingly prolonged, with each family’s path uniquely different yet heartbreakingly similar. In her deeply personal and cathartic book, Jessica Stokes delves into her family’s experience with this disease, often termed “the longest goodbye,” as she witnessed her mother’s cognitive decline. The narrative highlights how Alzheimer’s impacts not only the diagnosed individual but also the entire family, necessitating extensive care and adjustments. This story will resonate with many.

Seeking Clarity in the Labyrinth: A Daughter’s Journey Through Alzheimer’s is a poignant memoir by Jessica Stokes that serves as both a personal account and a therapeutic exploration. Beyond detailing her family’s 13-year journey with her mother’s Alzheimer’s, the book delves into themes of grief, balance, acceptance, change, and, above all, love. Stokes recounts the gradual loss of her mother, sharing how she learned to embrace the evolving versions of her. While not always consistent in this endeavor, she navigated the situation with resilience, steering through unwanted yet unavoidable challenges.

The narrative, though mostly linear, mirrors the workings of memory, where a small detail can spark an entirely new recollection. The book also carries a spiritual undertone, exploring concepts of life, death, and the possibility of an afterlife. The mindful and intentional journey of the labyrinth—both as a concept and through specific examples worldwide—was a constant presence for Stokes and her family, eventually becoming a metaphor for their experience. The labyrinth in her parents’ backyard, lovingly constructed by family members, symbolizes a sanctuary, providing peace within a convoluted path. Stokes revisits this imagery throughout her book, using it to illustrate the emotions accompanying the disease’s progression.

This book will be painfully familiar to those who have lost or are in the process of losing a loved one to Alzheimer’s. It offers comfort in a shared experience. Despite its deeply personal nature, Stokes’ story resonates universally. Even readers without direct experience with Alzheimer’s may relate to the gradual loss of a parent. Stokes writes with clarity and frankness, delivering a story that is heartfelt and heartbreaking.
