Posted by Literary-Titan

Nurse Florence: Tell Me About the Systems of the Human Body introduces readers to the major systems that keep our bodies functioning. What do you find so fascinating about this topic?
I think the systems of the human body are absolutely amazing. I think it’s incredible how they all work together to make human life possible. We live in an incredible world with outstanding resources.
What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?
It was important to me to clearly show each system independent of the others so people could easily see the things that support life. I tried to keep it simple, and I believed I accomplished my goal.
The art in this book really helps readers understand the concepts discussed. What was the art collaboration process like with illustrator Roland Harrison?
I gave Roland basic drawing prompts, and he recreated images to produce the beautiful art in the book. His images inspired me to write the text.
What is the next book that you are working on and when will it be available?

Sometimes it seems only a nurse can bring technical information down to an understanding that an ordinary person can grasp. The Nurse Florence(R) book series provides high-quality medical information that even a child can grasp. By introducing young kids to correct terminology and science concepts at an early age, we can help increase our children’s health literacy level as well as help to prepare them for courses and jobs in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. We need more scientists so I hope that many children will enjoy this book series and consider a job involving science. Introducing Some Medical Words to Kids in Every Book

The Pysanka Chicken: We Are All Born Different
Posted by Literary Titan

The Pysanka Chicken: We Are All Born Different, penned by Lesa Melnyczuk, introduces young readers to the important topic of children born with rare conditions or diseases in a thoughtful and engaging way. Set on Easter Sunday in the village of Bukavel, Ukraine, the story begins with Baba Helen, Baba Stefka, and their grandchildren waiting outside the church for the priest to bless their Easter baskets. As they make their way home, a surprising sound of cracking comes from one of the baskets. Curious, the children open it and discover a remarkable egg, painted in gold and blue. From this egg hatches a Pysanka Chicken, a special chick that looks different from the others. The children learn that, just as some chicks are born unique, so too are some babies, leading to a deeper and meaningful conversation about differences.
Lesa Melnyczuk weaves a heartwarming tale that touches on a complex subject with care and compassion. Her storytelling gracefully blends the charm of Ukrainian customs and traditions with the tender message of acceptance. The village setting feels inviting and warm, and Melnyczuk handles the topic of rare conditions with great empathy, making it accessible to young minds. While the story doesn’t point to any specific illness, it skillfully conveys the experience of being different and highlights the love and support needed from family and friends. The narrative also touches on how children born with unique conditions may need extra care, such as doctor visits or medical attention, but ultimately emphasizes unity, respect, and the power of love to overcome challenges. This is an ideal read for introducing young children to the concept of physical diversity and health differences.
The story’s brevity, coupled with its tender tone, makes it both digestible and heartfelt. However, the use of Ukrainian terms might pose a slight challenge for some readers, even though most are explained within the context of the story. I feel that the inclusion of a glossary at the beginning would have been a helpful addition, providing readers with a clearer understanding of these rich traditions upfront. Despite this, the story shines with its lovable characters and its magical touch, which brings the message of acceptance to life in a captivating way.
The Pysanka Chicken: We Are All Born Different, written by Lesa Melnyczuk and illustrated by Veronica Rooke, is a beautifully told story that uses a bit of magic to encourage children to embrace and understand physical and health differences in others. It’s a thoughtful and uplifting tale, perfect for sparking important conversations about diversity and empathy.

The Calling of a Teacher
Posted by Literary Titan

Chess Heart follows the third graders of Forest Elementary, who are introduced to the mysterious Chess Lady and learn about the game of chess. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?
Some of my students’ favorite picture books over the years have been the beloved classics An Angel for Solomon Singer by Cynthia Rylant, Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney, and Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge by Mem Fox. These stories resonated with my pupils, who were intrigued by the adult characters and the intergenerational relationships, helping them make text-to-life connections with important adults in their own worlds, both at home and at school. Inspired by this premise, the idea of crafting a story about a mysterious chess teacher came to life in my imagination and developed over time.
What themes were important for you to explore in this book?
One key theme is captured in my opening quote: “The calling of a teacher cannot be easily set aside.” This idea is deeply personal for me, as I had always yearned to be a teacher but spent years in management and graphic design before returning to my true passion. Though I was highly successful in that field, the strong pull toward teaching never left my heart. Eventually, I went back to complete my degree and obtain my license, and I have been an educator ever since. Other important themes in the book include perseverance, respect, empathy, the value of intergenerational relationships on both sides, and caring—qualities that are essential in fostering character development and reinforced by guidance counselors and instructors in classrooms every day. Additionally, the setting of a Valentine’s Day celebration, a time to honor love, friendship, and community, adds another layer of meaning to the narrative.
What scene in the book did you have the most fun writing?
I particularly enjoyed collaborating with my incredibly talented illustrator, Barry Davian, on the scenes that reveal the backstory of the mysterious chess lady. I shared my thoughts with him, and Barry elevated those ideas through his art. Only in the nuanced illustrations can readers infer what may have interrupted Miss Kay’s journey as a teacher. The outcome was both thrilling and heartwarming, even bringing a tear to my eye. I believe students will enjoy analyzing the chess lady’s history and imagining various interpretations by closely studying the colorful and captivating artwork that Barry created.
What is the next book that you are working on, and when will it be available?
I’m currently working on the second book in my Bear Adventures in the Smoky Mountains series, which should be available in time for Christmas. The working title is Papa Jed’s Christmas Eve Awakening.

Old Crabby Turtle’s Big Rescue
Posted by Literary Titan

Old Crabby Turtle‘s Big Rescue by Cynthia Olsen and Michael Stark is a delightful children’s story about teamwork, bravery, and friendship. The story follows Little Fishy and his seaweed forest friends as they embark on a rescue mission to save their friend Starry the Starfish and his companions, who have been captured by humans. Guided by Old Crabby Turtle, the group journeys through the ocean, led by Dolphin’s remarkable hearing, until they finally reach the ship where their friends are being held. The story takes an exciting turn when Octopus, with her cleverness and the help of a kind boy, frees the captured starfish and saves the day.
I found this children’s book both charming and engaging. One thing I liked most was how it subtly emphasizes the importance of each sea creature’s unique abilities. Dolphin uses his exceptional hearing to guide the group, and Octopus, with her many brains, cleverly unlocks the container holding Starry. This kind of storytelling gives children an encouraging message that everyone has something special to contribute, which is a beautiful way to teach teamwork.
The authors also skillfully capture the tension and excitement of the rescue mission, making it a fun and adventurous read. The writing flows smoothly, and the dialogue between the sea creatures is both lively and easy to follow. The character of Old Crabby Turtle, despite his name, is wise and caring, showing the children how to remain calm and plan carefully. I particularly loved the part where Octopus takes charge, knowing she is the only one capable of the daring task. Her persistence in trying to open the locked container is one of the most engaging moments in the book and demonstrates to young readers the power of determination.
Nathalie Kranich’s illustrations truly bring the story to life. The vibrant and detailed artwork complements the narrative, making each scene more immersive. The sea creatures are illustrated with warmth and charm, and there’s plenty for children to explore visually on each page. One of my favorite illustrations shows the moment the kind boy helps Octopus free Starry and the other starfish, a touching reminder that kindness and cooperation can come from unexpected places.
Old Crabby Turtle‘s Big Rescue is a lovely story with themes of bravery, teamwork, and kindness that would resonate with young readers. It’s perfect for children who enjoy adventure tales and stories about the ocean.

Charlie Chaloosy Refuses to Snoozy
Posted by Literary Titan

Charlie Chaloosy Refuses to Snoozy is a playful and lighthearted children’s book that tackles the familiar challenge of getting kids to nap. The story follows young Charlie Chaloosy, a boy who stubbornly resists nap time every day. Despite his protests, Charlie eventually drifts off into adventurous dreams, from being a pirate to taming lions, and wakes up feeling refreshed and ready for more fun. The rhyming narrative is simple, and the book encourages kids to embrace naps by showing them the exciting possibilities that sleep can bring through their dreams.
One of the things I really enjoyed about this picture book is the way it uses rhyme to make the story flow effortlessly. Each verse is fun to read aloud, which makes it perfect for story time with kids. The rhymes are catchy, and even though the topic is about something as routine as napping, the author makes it feel light and engaging. The rhythm keeps the story moving, and I can see how it would hold a child’s attention.
I also loved how the book portrays sleep as something imaginative and exciting. Charlie’s dreams take him on different adventures, and that’s such a clever way to show kids that nap time isn’t just about resting, it’s an opportunity to explore fun dreamscapes. When Charlie dreams of being a pirate or a pastry chef, it’s easy to see how these vivid scenes could spark a child’s imagination. This approach might actually make naps more appealing to kids, which, let’s be honest, is a huge win for parents! The interactive element at the end of the book is another highlight. The invitation for children to write and draw their own dreams is a fantastic way to engage young readers further.
Charlie Chaloosy Refuses to Snoozy is a charming and energetic children’s book that would be great for bedtime or nap time routines. It’s perfect for young children who struggle with taking naps or those who enjoy dream-filled adventures. Parents will appreciate how the book mixes humor, fun rhymes, and a gentle message about the importance of rest.

The Fox and the Election Fraud
Posted by Literary Titan

The Fox and the Election Fraud by Tuula Pere, with illustrations by Andrea Alemanno, tells the story of Francis the Fox, a cunning and ambitious character who decides to run for mayor against William the Wolf. Francis is not exactly popular, nor is he honest, but that doesn’t stop him from hatching a scheme to manipulate the election. Throughout the book, he tries various underhanded tactics, including bribery and eventually tampering with the votes, but things don’t go according to his plans. In the end, justice prevails, and Francis, caught red-handed, faces the consequences of his actions.
I found the narrative to be an engaging and witty portrayal of political manipulation and greed. Francis’s character is amusingly over-the-top, and his audacity makes him both laughable and frustrating. The way he convinces himself that he’s the hero of his own story—despite clearly being a villain—felt so true to life, particularly when he dismisses the consequences of his past failures and tries to shift the blame onto others. The dialogue, especially Francis’s inner thoughts, added a lot of humor to the story, making me chuckle at how delusional he was, like when he complained that the city didn’t value his “remarkable skills.” The book’s pacing is snappy, and the plot kept things entertaining, and the escalating absurdity of Francis’s schemes really pulled me along. One of the standout parts of the book was the moral it carries about integrity, leadership, and the consequences of dishonesty. The climax, where Francis’s plan unravels in front of the entire city, was satisfying and drove home the point that shortcuts and deceit don’t lead to real success. The book manages to convey these lessons without feeling preachy, which I appreciated.
The Fox and the Election Fraud is an enjoyable, light read, perfect for kids but also entertaining for adults who enjoy clever allegories about power and ethics. It’s an especially great pick for young readers who are beginning to learn about fairness, honesty, and the importance of good leadership. The playful tone and vibrant illustrations make it even more appealing, and while it’s a fun read, it’s also a thought-provoking one. If you’re looking for a children’s book that blends humor, important life lessons, and a bit of political satire, this is definitely worth checking out.

Moose and Frog Go for a Walk is a charming children’s book that teaches kids the value of patience and the consequences of acting too quickly. He gets his foot stuck in a pile of rocks. Luckily, Frog is there to help him, reminding readers of the importance of friendship and teamwork.
Patience is a vital lesson for children, as it helps them manage frustration and approach situations calmly.
