Believe In Yourself

Rachel Bate Author Interview

Hatch Chile Willie follows a chile farmer from New Mexico who discovers in his greenhouse a Hatch Chile who has come to life and plays a guitar. What was the inspiration for your story?

I was driving to Las Cruces for a book signing in southern New Mexico with my husband and our German Shepherd, Bliss. We were about thirty minutes away from our destination, when I looked out the window noticing a breathtaking green landscape next to the Rio Grande. I exclaimed to my husband, “Oh Guy, can we please stop here?!” It was a charming little town called Hatch, New Mexico, “The Chile Capital of the World”! After our enchanting road trip, I researched all about the tiny town of Hatch, NM, along with the world known distinct delicious Hatch Chile… my imagination prevailed, creating Hatch Chile Willie.

Are there any books or authors that inspired you to become a writer?

One author who truly inspired me on my journey as a writer was Shel Silverstein. His books are pure genius, engaging, thought provoking, and imaginative. I am always amazed at his wonderful talent of using words, poetry, illustrations, etc., to capture and engage the reader. I especially remember reading and rereading his wonderful children’s picture book, “The Giving Tree” as a child and later in life as a teacher.

What advice would you give to a new writer working on their first children’s book?

My advice to a new writer working on their first children’s book is to allow yourself a quiet time and space to gather and create your thoughts over time. For example, ideas and thoughts may come in the middle of the night, have a journal next to your bed to write down what comes to mind to reflect on later. Lastly, believe in yourself and your abilities as a writer…persevere in your dream of creating a masterpiece.

What is the next book that you are working on and when can your fans expect it to be out?

I always feel consummated and at peace after a book has been published. My next book is a lingering mystery within me, as I ponder upon sequels to books that I have written, or something totally unprecedented.

This children’s book navigates the challenges and apprehensions associated with new beginnings, skillfully capturing Luca’s initial anxiety about fitting into an unfamiliar environment. As Luca encounters his new teacher and classmates, he discovers an atmosphere of acceptance and learns an invaluable lesson: mistakes are an integral part of life.

Shamolina’s vibrant illustrations beautifully bring this message to life, adding depth and warmth to the story. Luca, as a character, is endearing and easily relatable for young readers. Explore Courage and Bravery

Kirt Seuchan Author Interview

The Adventures of Danny the Discus follows a spirited discus fish named Danny, who seeks to understand his new world while navigating the challenges of acceptance and survival in a diverse aquatic community. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

My inspiration came from my childhood experiences of being bullied and learning to stand up for what I believe in. At a young age, I went from being bullied at school to growing taller than most children at a young age and protecting those children around me from being bullied themselves. In addition, I am a Discus Fish hobbyist, and I thought it would be great to put my knowledge of the hobby into a children’s book that would also teach kids about the discus fish but also incorporate my country’s culture and moral values.

The artwork in the book was charming. What was the collaboration process like with illustrator Wazim Mohammed?

Well, the collaboration with Johnny Hossain, who was the illustrator was fantastic; he was able to capture what I had in my mind in terms of the storyboards to tell this wonderful story. The communication was excellent with little rework, so it was a joy to work with him.

What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?

The main themes in my book look at the spirit of adventure, explore courage and bravery, and have a moral lesson at the end, which I believe is important for children to learn.

What is the next book you are working on, and when will it be available?

My next book is The Adventures of Danny the Discus Volume 2 – Love of a Mother. It’s available now on Amazon and was published in October 2023. This book was meant as a tribute to all mothers and was inspired by my mother, who I lost in April 2023. Currently working on my third book in the series, which will be available in 2024.

Monsters Have Feelings

Stacie Green Author Interview

Monsters Need Breaks Too! follows well-known monsters who, after a hard day of work, doing whatever it is monsters do, need some downtime to process their own feelings and just relax. What was the inspiration for your story?

After the Pandemic, it felt like the world just hit the ground running as everyone around me, myself included, was getting back into activities and making themselves busy again. I saw my kids struggle to get back into the routine of schedules and places to be. We were talking about how to create balance in our lives again after such an upheaval, and taking more frequent breaks was one of our ideas. I often use drawing as a way to take a break and reset. During one of my fun drawing breaks, I began drawing cute monsters and started with the Lochness monster. I thought it would be funny to imagine the Lochness monster taking a bath in a tub. Soon after I imagined the Kraken with an ice cream and drew him under the sea with sunken ships. I would post my images on Instagram with funny captions because they made me laugh, and I thought others would find it funny as well. This book started with a few funny illustrations, but as I looked at the images, I started to imagine the pictures as snapshots of the story. What had happened before this scene, and why would the Lochness monster be taking a bubble bath? Why would Kraken be eating an ice cream? Since childhood, I’ve been fascinated by monsters, mythical creatures, and cryptids, and love to think about them being a lot like us. It was funny to imagine what kinds of things would be frustrating to monsters, and then my book grew from there.

What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?

I wanted the idea that monsters were a lot like us to really come through in the story so that anyone could identify with the emotions in the book. I think using monsters gives the story a universal reach because there are no limitations on who could see themselves represented in the story. I liked the idea that monsters have feelings and that sometimes their feelings get hurt, or they get frustrated like we do. Secondly, I really wanted the readers to think about ways they can take breaks in their own lives when they get overwhelmed or are feeling uncomfortable emotions. I wanted to help the reader brainstorm in a humorous way, things they could do to reset.

What were some goals you set for yourself as a writer in this book?

This is my first book, and some of my goals were simple at first; to simply accomplish the task of writing, illustrating, and publishing a book. Beyond that monumental goal I set for myself, I wanted the illustrations to tell most of the story, and I wanted my story to be clear and well-written. This was a huge learning experience for me. I’ve been illustrating for years and have written many stories in my life, but I’ve never shared them with the public until now. This was a major milestone for me as I’ve wanted to publish a children’s book since I was in college. It was one of those dreams in the back of my mind that would come and go. I took some courses during the pandemic and afterwards that introduced me to the tools needed to accomplish this goal, and I was finally able to bring it to life!

Is this the first book in the series? If so, when is the next book coming out, and what can your fans expect in the next story?

I am currently working on another book in this series that is called (for now) Monster Problems from A-Z: Addiction to Zoning Out. We loved reading books to our children, and I really appreciated writers who wrote funny books that we could laugh with and also books that were geared toward the parents, too. Books that are fun for kids and parents to read together promote more interaction and conversation and is a BIG goal in writing the Monsters series.

Milo Savage and The Gargoyle Hunters – The Curse of the Chimera

Returning from their enigmatic encounters in the gargoyle dimension, Milo Savage and his cadre of allies find little time for reprieve as they are thrust into a new challenge. Their quaint town is on the brink of peril, a menace looming that threatens to disrupt the much-anticipated Dance of the Gargoyles. The clock is ticking, and it’s up to Milo, Sammy, Suzy, and Kat to unravel the mystery and neutralize the threat before chaos ensues.

In Milo Savage and the Gargoyle Hunters Book Two: Curse of the Chimera, author D.S. Quinton delivers a thrilling follow-up to The Secret of the Moonstone. This fantasy novel brims with suspense and is beautifully paced, weaving through dramatic encounters with ease, striking a balance between light-heartedness and gravity. The characters remain true to their origins, with Quinton offering just enough background to welcome new readers into this fantastical world. Gorp, the latest ally, emerges as a standout, bringing a fresh dynamic to the group. The cantankerous Grimlo and the evolving camaraderie among the youths, particularly Sammy’s character development, are highlighted. Although Kat’s antics may wear thin, the book excels in maintaining intrigue and excitement.

As a fan who anticipated this sequel, I found myself yearning for more on Gertie’s fate, a narrative thread ripe for future exploration. Nonetheless, Curse of the Chimera captivates, weaving a tapestry of adventure suitable for young readers and beyond, especially those drawn to mythical quests and the spirit of cooperation.

Milo Savage and the Gargoyle Hunters Book Two: Curse of the Chimera strikes an enjoyable chord with an engaging narrative and a seamless blend of joyous and intense moments. An accessible yet electrifying escapade, Quinton’s latest offers a page-turning experience, leaving readers eager for the next chapter in Milo’s unfolding saga. Don’t let this one slip by; it’s an adventure that’s sure to enthrall. Here’s to the anticipation of book three!

Curiosity And Imagination

Priya Ramesh Author Interview

The Big Red Bird Feeder follows a young girl interested in birdwatching who wants to solve the mystery of what is happening to the food she puts out every night. What was the inspiration for this children’s mystery story?

This story was inspired by Nature – the happenings in my own backyard. It was a fun and amusing experience to see the bird food disappear faster than what I expected. The sequence of happenings eventually led to crafting the idea behind The Big Red Bird Feeder children’s story book.

Are you a birdwatcher? If so, how did you get interested in this hobby, and at what age?

Even though I am not a dedicated bird watcher, I have always been interested in bird watching from a very young age. For this reason, we have had a bird feeder and hummingbird feeder in our backyard. It is so delightful to watch them peck at the bird feeder or build a nest in my house on the top of the pillars.

What were some educational aspects that were important for you to include in this children’s book?

This story book intends to be a delightful read for young children who are learning how to read. I wanted to spark their curiosity and imagination and reinforce the belief that they can solve any problem or challenge when they put their minds to work.

What is the next book that you are working, on and when will it be available?

I have a story outline in the draft stage: a children’s fantasy story book about what young birds can do with the power of listening and learning.

I am working on the book and would like to publish it by the year 2024-25.
