Small Life Lessons

JWoodall.Art Author Interview

The Curious Quest of Little Luna follows a fox who stumbles upon a mysterious treasure map in the woods, sending her on a whimsical journey filled with excitement, challenges, and meaningful moments. What was the inspiration for your story?

The inspiration for Little Luna came from watching my own children explore with such curiosity and wonder. I wanted to create a story that encouraged that same spirit of adventure—one that blends imagination with small life lessons. Luna’s journey is not just about finding treasure, but about what she learns along the way.

What were some educational aspects that were important for you to include in this children’s book?

One of my goals was to subtly introduce problem-solving, emotional resilience, and the value of curiosity. Luna faces challenges that require her to think, adapt, and sometimes lean on the help of others. These moments offer gentle reminders to young readers that it’s okay to make mistakes, ask questions, or feel uncertain—as long as you keep moving forward.

What scene in the book did you have the most fun writing?

Rather than one specific scene, what I enjoyed most was the process of introducing new characters as the story progressed. Each one added a unique energy and helped shape Luna’s journey in a meaningful way.

Is this the first book in the series? If so, when is the next book coming out, and what can your fans expect in the next story?

The Curious Quest of Little Luna is a standalone story and not part of a planned series. Luna’s journey wraps up in this book.

Health Literacy

Michael Dow Author Interview

Nurse Florence®, What Are Platelets? follows a school nurse as she answers three students’ questions about platelets, explaining what they are, where they come from, what they do, and how we keep them healthy. How do you approach writing about medical topics to make the topic interesting for children?

I trust in my belief that kids can learn complicated things as long as we explain them thoroughly.

How did you develop the personalities for Jean, Condi, and Sonia, who are prominent characters throughout the series?

My niece, Sandra Islas, you illustrated the first book was the one who came up with the three characters. I loved the diversity of a Caucasian, Hispanic, and African American who were all friends so I just continued it with all the other books. It shows the collaboration I do with my illustrators that give them some guidelines and they create their own Nurse Florence® universe.

What do the words “literary success” mean to you? How do you picture it?

With all the great book reviews and many book awards the series has won, I do believe Nurse Florence® is already a literary success. I wish the series to become a global phenomenon so that health literacy levels around the world are drastically improved.

Tell us something about yourself that we likely don’t know? The more obscure the better.

I write the Nurse Florence® series at my kitchen table surrounded by many depictions of the Florence Nightingale Pledge. She was an amazing woman, and I truly hope my series honors her.

Math Operations

Lisa Konkol Author Interview

Mrs. Wiggles and the Numbers: Patterns follows a group of number characters who are out at recess and get invited by their teacher, Mrs. Wiggles, to play an “I Spy” game—but with patterns! What was the inspiration for your story?

A few things inspired the story. First, children told me they wanted Mrs. Wiggles and the Numbers to count to 100. (Infinity, actually, but that would be difficult even for Mrs. Wiggles.)

Second, teachers asked for a fun, read-aloud, rhyming picture book about patterns with a storyline.

What were some educational aspects that were important for you to include in this children’s book?

First, children must understand the concept of patterns to learn how to read and perform math operations.

Second, teachers often use a 1-100 number chart in the classroom to illustrate math patterns. I wanted to help them by incorporating a number chart in the story.

What scene in the book did you have the most fun writing?

They were all fun! If I had to pick one, I’d say having Mrs. Wiggles ride the cow. I live in Wisconsin, and one day while writing the story, I went past a farm with a herd of cows that formed a pattern.

Can you tell us more about what’s in store for Mrs. Wiggles and the direction of the next book?

I have lots of ideas for Mrs. Wiggles. It’s exciting planning out the next adventure!

Can the number Zero find a pattern?

A fun and educational adventure comes from the creator of the award-winning Mrs. Wiggles and the Numbers! Join Mrs. Wiggles as she introduces her classroom to the fascinating world of patterns. Number Zero doesn’t quite understand at first, but everything clicks when he discovers the most exciting pattern of all! SPOILER ALERT: He paints a vibrant 1-100 number chart and exclaims, “We are patterns on the wall. Numbers are the best of all!”

Learning about patterns is a key part of the kindergarten curriculum, and this charming story is a perfect tool for introducing young learners to this essential concept. Patterns help children build foundational math and language skills, making this book a valuable early-education resource.

Bright, playful illustrations invite kids to explore patterns in everyday things-flowers, animals, and even on the farm! Whether used in the classroom or at home, the book encourages children to spot patterns everywhere they look.

A 1-100 number chart is included to help children visualize number patterns, and a bold two-page spread shows the numbers together to help little ones count by tens. The delightful rhyming text is ideal for read-aloud sessions, and young readers will love spotting Number Nine, who can often be found napping throughout the story. Onomatopoeia adds an extra layer of fun, keeping kids engaged and enhancing the visual experience.

The rhyming scheme also introduces children to poetry and rhyming words, making it an excellent tool for early literacy. With easy-to-read text, this book is perfect for beginning readers, creating an enjoyable experience for teachers and children alike.

“Books like this give young children a wonderful head-start at developing an essential life skill. All families should be reading this book to their children by the time they are two years old and beyond.” Richard Schramm, MD, American Psychiatric Association Fellow

Mrs. Wiggles and the Numbers stories are the perfect learning books for preschool and kindergarten, ages 3-6.

Organizational Public Service

Michael Dow Author Interview

Nurse Florence®, What is Progressive Supranuclear Palsy? follows a young girl who visits the school nurse to learn more about her great-granddad’s diagnosis of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP). Why was this an important book for you to write?

The Nurse Florence® project asks illustrators to do a rare disease book every fourth book they are assigned. The illustrator, Lorie Brooker, asked for us to do this topic since it affected her family. Dow Creative Enterprises® believes in its mission of educating the public even if the book never becomes a best-seller. It is an organizational public service we do in order to help our world understand itself a little better.

What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?

Pathophysiology is always important in a Nurse Florence® disease book. We want to bring the science of human physiology down to an elementary level to inspire the next generation into careers in the health sciences.

What was one of the hardest parts in Nurse Florence®, What is Progressive Supranuclear Palsy? for you to write?

There are not hard parts with writing Nurse Florence® especially since I’ve written so many (168 as of May 2025). It is relaxing to write Nurse Florence®, and it has turned into a coping skill. I encourage anyone who loves to write to write often so they sharpen their skills and produce works for others to enjoy.

What is the next book that you are working on, and when will it be available?

The next Nurse Florence® is about the Common Cold. The next Nurse Dorothea® is about Anxiety. We have a third series that will start this autumn about citizenship. The company has plans for about 30 more children’s series.

A Day on the Brine

A Day on the Brine is a charming, rhythmic journey through the ocean’s wonders, seen through the eyes of a curious captain and the creatures she encounters on her voyage. With lyrical, repetitive verse and vibrant illustrations, the book flows from one sea creature to the next, capturing the natural rhythms of marine life from sunrise to moonrise. Set off the west coast of Australia, this tale speaks to the interconnectedness of life on the ocean and the quiet magic of the sea.

Right from the start, I was pulled in by the rhythm. The repeated structure—“And what do you think she sees?” makes it feel like a lullaby, or a chant you’d say to a child while swaying on a boat. It’s simple, but it works. I especially loved the line about the “squid pinkpink and shy” who “peeks at the sky.” That moment stuck with me, there’s something so soft and endearing about it. It’s playful but also poetic. The use of double adjectives, “whitewhite,” “pinkpink,” “greengreen,” initially felt unusual, but they started to feel like waves lapping: steady, repeated, calming.

The writing isn’t trying to be clever. It’s honest and kind. There’s a real respect for the sea here, and that shines through the gentle language and Emma Stuart’s dreamy illustrations. I found myself lingering on the page with the “whale large and greygrey” coming up for a play. That spread, both in words and visuals, felt alive. There’s no heavy lesson being pushed, but you still get this sense of awe for marine life and the beauty of slowing down to look at the world.

One thing I appreciated deeply is the circular nature of the story. It begins and ends with the big blue boat, creating a feeling of coming home, of completing a cycle. The moon watching the boat and captain at the end made me smile. It’s subtle, but it tugs at something warm in you. It reminded me of how, as a kid, I’d imagine the moon following me on car rides home. Also, the glossary and activities at the end are a nice bonus, educational without being dry, and great for curious young readers.

This book is a delight. If you’ve got little ones who love the ocean, or if you just want something calming and beautiful to read together at bedtime, A Day on the Brine is for you. It’s got heart, rhythm, and a soft sense of wonder. I’d recommend it to families, early educators, or anyone who finds peace in the sea.

Misunderstood Creatures

Edward Boyd Author Interview

Bart the Tiny Bat follows a tiny bat with one tooth who goes out one night and gets lost in a strange place, leaving him scared and alone, and only wanting to return home. What was the inspiration for your story?

So the bat hanging on the ceiling fan happened to me in real life. My initial reaction was similar to the character Barb’s in my book. I calmed down though and realized how scared the bat was. I got an oversized jar and scooped the bat gently in, and released it outside. I posted the experience on social media and it became clear this was my next book.

What educational aspects were important for you to include in this children’s book?

The importance of animals that we don’t understand and the role they play in the environment. Bats in particular play a very important role in our environment and are very misunderstood creatures. I also wanted to teach children to have empathy toward all animals.

What scene in the book did you have the most fun writing?

It was so fun learning about bats! I did my research and had some help from our local zoo. I illustrate my own books and that is honestly my favorite part. Creating characters, and drawing them into life.

Is this the first book in the series? If so, when is the next book coming out, and what can your fans expect in the next story?

That’s a great question. I’m thinking about what other animals fall in the category of environmental importance and being misunderstood. There are a couple. The positive response from this book though makes me want to do more.

Bart is a tiny bat, with one tiny tooth. He lives in cave. He sleeps during the day. He likes to fly at night. Bart goes out one night and gets lost in a strange place. All he wants to do is get back home. He gets lost in what looks like a huge cave occupied by giants!

Lemons and…More Lemons

I just finished reading Lemons and…More Lemons by A.D. Williams and Kendal Fordham, and wow—I wasn’t expecting such a heartwarming and eye-opening read, especially from a kids’ book. This story follows a boy named Mark on his summertime journey as a young entrepreneur running a lemonade stand. But it’s much more than that. It’s about family, dreams, business smarts, community, money lessons, and a squirrel named Mansa who somehow drops more wisdom than most adults. Through conversations with his mom, uncle, cousin, and a few new faces, Mark learns about budgeting, investing, ownership, and even whether or not to take on a business partner.

I love the vibe of this children’s book. The writing is super fun and easy to follow but never feels like it is talking down to young readers. It has real heart. One of my favorite parts is when Mark’s mom breaks down the family budget at the dinner table. It’s such an honest family moment. The whole “income is positive, expenses are negative, like a hug versus a push” analogy is brilliant and funny. The scene where Mark realizes they don’t own their house is such a relatable, awkward, and important conversation about homeownership and gentrification, and the authors handle it with care.

Another standout moment is the wild purple brownies made with ube. Mark and Cuzzo try them at Jimmy’s house. I love how that one scene turns into a whole new business idea. But what hits even harder is Mark’s inner debate about partnering with Jimmy’s dad to grow his lemonade empire. I could feel the weight of his decisions. It reminded me how complicated growing something can be, especially when it means giving up control. Still, the authors didn’t push one answer. They let Mark explore and think, which I loved because it felt real.

This book is written for children, but it’s packed with life lessons most adults could use a refresher on. If you’re a parent, teacher, or just someone who likes inspiring, feel-good stories with real heart and humor then Lemons and… More Lemons is a solid pick. It’s smart, sweet, funny, and full of juicy life wisdom.

Word Fun Riddles & Crisscross Puzzles: Dynamic Duos

This delightful book combines silly riddles with engaging puzzles to create a fun, lighthearted experience perfect for word enthusiasts of all ages. The first half is packed with “Word Fun Riddles,” where solving quirky letter-based puzzles leads to equally quirky jokes. The second half shifts into “Crisscross Puzzles,” which feel like a crossword-meets-jigsaw hybrid. Together, these sections encourage creative thinking while keeping things playful and interactive.

The writing is charming and simple, clearly designed to make puzzles feel accessible rather than intimidating. The sheer silliness of the jokes adds to the fun, especially if you’re solving them with kids or a group. Hovanec’s instructions are clear and sprinkled with friendly encouragement, which makes the book feel personal, like advice from a puzzle-loving friend.

The humor is wonderfully playful, with some riddles leaning into silly charm. That’s the joy of it; it’s less about being overly clever and more about embracing the fun of wordplay. The real delight comes from solving the riddles and uncovering the answers. The puzzles themselves are thoughtfully crafted, encouraging you to notice unique letter patterns and think creatively. It’s a perfect blend of quick, satisfying wins and slightly more challenging brain-teasers.

The crisscross section is a natural and creative follow-up. Words are cleverly grouped by fun themes, which adds an imaginative touch. While this section shifts away from the laugh-out-loud humor of the riddles, it brings a relaxing and satisfying rhythm to solving the puzzles. Filling out the grids feels almost meditative, and some lists spark whimsical imagery that adds to the charm. It’s a delightful way to unwind and enjoy the creativity of themed wordplay.

Word Fun Riddles & Crisscross Puzzles: Dynamic Duos is perfect for family game nights, road trips, or anyone who wants a low-stress mental workout. It’s lighthearted fun wrapped in wordy goodness. I’d recommend it to puzzle lovers, parents of younger kids, and anyone who appreciates a mix of groans and grins in their humor.
