The Long Game

The Long Game is a dark and twisty crime thriller that follows Detective Inspector Michael Dack as he hunts for the people behind a series of disappearances and murders of young girls in London. The story widens fast. What begins as a grim investigation becomes a deep dive into trafficking, corruption, and the awful truth that some monsters hide behind polished shoes and important titles. The book moves through police politics, secret operations, and terrible betrayals, all while pushing Dack into situations that test every part of him.

The writing is punchy and quick, and it doesn’t waste time easing into a scene. It throws you in, cold water to the face. Sometimes the dialogue hit hard and felt real. Other times, it came across a bit theatrical, like people knew they were standing under a spotlight. Still, the energy made it fun. I loved the way tension simmered through even the quieter chapters. I could almost feel the weight on Dack’s shoulders. I caught myself clenching my jaw more than once.

I’ll be honest, though. The book made me uneasy at points. Not because of the writing, but because of the subject matter. It pushes you into rooms you don’t want to imagine. It shows people who feel frighteningly believable in their cruelty. I admired that the story didn’t shy away from horror or emotion. The pacing kept me reading faster than I expected. The emotional gut punches landed, especially whenever the victims came into focus.

The Long Game hits with the same gritty punch as thrillers like The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Reacher series, but it dives even deeper into the shadows where power, corruption, and human cruelty collide. I’d recommend The Long Game to readers who enjoy crime fiction with grit, speed, and a healthy dose of anger at the world. If you like stories where the hero crawls through darkness to drag the truth into the light, this one will keep you turning pages.

Criminal Elements

Dennis M. Currie Author Interview

Secrets of the Shield is a collection of raw, pulse-pounding crime thriller stories rooted deep in real-world law enforcement, and told through the lens of a seasoned cop. Where did the idea for this novel come from and how did it develop over time?

The genesis of Secrets of the Shield stems from my twenty years of frontline experience investigating cases that few civilians ever witness. Throughout my career in specialized investigation units, I documented harrowing encounters with ruthless cartel operations involving human trafficking, drug distribution networks that spanned continents, execution-style homicides, and systematic extortion. My notebooks captured the chaos of the LA riots from inside the police perimeter, the tense negotiations of high-profile kidnappings where lives hung in the balance, and government corruption cases that revealed shocking betrayals of public trust. These weren’t distant news stories—they were realities I lived through daily, meticulously recording details that accumulated in field notebooks over two decades.

Among these cases was a seemingly routine undercover assignment in North Hollywood where I arrested suspects targeting grocery stores throughout LA for high-end merchandise. One of these suspects was Ricardo Ramirez, aka The Night Stalker, 5 years before his murder spree began. I took a Polaroid photo on the date of his arrest that I still have today and included in the book. The fingerprints and booking photo from his arrest at North Hollywood LAPD eventually identified him as Richard Ramirez. I found this photo well after his arrest and decided to tell the untold story that no one had documented in the news media, movies, or docuseries, including the Polaroid that had never been released to the public. This unexpected historical connection became one compelling element in my larger mission to document the hidden criminal landscape I navigated throughout my career.

What brings a smile to my face is that my wife Debbie deserves full credit for inspiring this book. She took one look at my growing collection of storage bins overflowing with case notes and said, “Either those notebooks become a book, or they’re moving into their own house—our garage needs breathing room!” That gentle nudge was all it took to transform decades of field notes into my first published work.

What was the most challenging part of writing Secrets of the Shield, and what was the most rewarding?

The most challenging aspect of compiling this book was exercising extreme caution regarding what information I could disclose. I needed to protect the integrity of the cases while, most importantly, safeguarding the victims and their families who were violently impacted by these predators who forever altered their lives.

The most rewarding outcome has been sharing these stories with readers to reveal the truth about criminal elements lurking in plain sight—predators waiting for their next helpless victims, completely devoid of empathy for the devastation they cause not only to their immediate victims but also to families and associates. These cases exist only in the memories of my fellow investigators and special agents who lived through them, and I felt compelled to help the public understand what transpires around them daily—incidents that often never receive media attention.

How did you decide what to include and leave out in your book?

My decisions about content were primarily guided by the protection of victims and their families, alongside maintaining both the criminal and civil integrity of these cases. Throughout the project, I sought professional legal counsel to ensure these objectives were met.

Will there be a follow-up novel to this story? If so, what aspects of the story will the next book cover?

Yes, I have two sequels launching toward the end of this year: Encrypted Patriot and The Coin Collector. These works elevate Secrets of the Shield into heightened crime thrillers with incredible action and government espionage drama that extends to other parts of the world. Many characters from the first book continue their journeys into covert government agencies, operating at the highest—sometimes officially nonexistent—security levels.

Los Angeles County: a sprawling metropolis where power, corruption, and violence collide in the shadows. For decades, the public has only seen the surface. Now, a retired veteran police investigative sergeant rips the veil off the city’s darkest secrets.

From the arrest of Richard Ramirez, the Night Stalker—five years before his reign of terror began—to the chaos of the Los Angeles riots, from covert operations dismantling cartel murder networks to exposing corrupt government officials, these are the cases that were sealed away. Until now.

What you’re about to read has never been disclosed to the public, including a single Polaroid photograph within these pages that tells a story of its own. Misunderstanding

Misunderstanding is a raw and poignant story that delves deep into the lives of two young girls, Alice and Lilly, who form an unlikely yet heartwarming bond against the backdrop of their turbulent lives. The story traces their journey from childhood, marked by trauma and resilience, into adolescence, where their friendship becomes both a refuge and a source of strength. It contrasts the bleak realities of abuse and neglect with moments of courage, loyalty, and tender humanity.

The author’s writing is incredibly vivid and emotionally gripping. From the first chapter, I felt plunged into Alice’s world, where playing with a battered deck of cards in a dingy trailer represents her only escape from a harsh reality. The scene where Alice’s father storms into their home, unleashing chaos and violence, left a knot in my stomach. The author doesn’t shy away from portraying the grim truth of Alice’s life, yet through it all, Alice’s spirit shines—a beacon of strength in her dark world. The way her imagination transforms mundane objects into rich, creative stories is both heartbreaking and beautiful.

On the other hand, Lilly’s life, although materially comfortable, is emotionally hollow. Her mother’s obsession with appearances and her father’s passive enabling create a veneer of perfection masking dysfunction. The scene in which Lilly timidly watches her mother’s frantic dress selection struck me deeply. It underscored how Lilly is often left to navigate her mother’s whims and insecurities alone. The stark contrast between Alice and Lilly’s circumstances highlights how trauma can take many forms—some glaring, others insidious.

The friendship between Alice and Lilly is the heart of the book. Their bond, forged in innocence and mutual understanding, becomes a lifeline for both girls. A standout moment is when Alice defends Lilly at the playground, facing down bullies with a ferocity that belies her small stature. It’s both touching and powerful. Their friendship is further tested and deepened at summer camp, where they face external threats and internal doubts. The pacing in some sections feels uneven, with intense moments sometimes overshadowing quieter, reflective scenes that I think could have added more depth to the characters’ emotional journeys. Even so, the scenes of Alice asserting her dominance over camp bullies or Lilly finding her own voice are uplifting and satisfying.

The book also raises questions about resilience and justice. The harrowing chapter where Alice is attacked by Oliver is difficult to read but important. It confronts the readers with the stark reality of abuse and the societal systems that often fail victims. Alice’s courage in recounting the event and her determination to move forward are inspiring, though the lingering injustice is a bitter pill to swallow. This section is handled with sensitivity and nuance, keeping the focus on Alice’s perspective and strength. While the story is emotionally powerful and deeply moving, I felt it occasionally relies on familiar tropes of trauma and redemption.

This book is a compelling and emotional read that I would recommend to anyone interested in stories about resilience, friendship, and the complexity of human relationships. It is especially suited for readers who appreciate layered characters and narratives that balance darkness with hope. While it doesn’t shy away from harsh realities, it also reminds us of the power of connection and the strength found in even the youngest hearts.

Fragmentation Vol II: In Search Of

Fragmentation Vol II: In Search Of dives headfirst into a turbulent storm of self-reflection, psychological tension, and a persistent search for meaning. Author John Randall’s sequel picks up the scattered pieces of its predecessor, threading them into a narrative that explores guilt, redemption, and the chaos of the human mind. From the gritty streets of Austin to surreal encounters in foam clubs, the protagonist’s journey is an odyssey of raw emotion and existential questioning.

One standout moment for me was his interaction with Honzo, a fellow lost soul. Honzo’s monologue about his strained relationship with his father was raw and heartbreaking. It’s in these quieter, introspective moments that the book truly shines. However, the rapid tonal shifts between gritty realism and surreal elements sometimes felt jarring to me.

Randall’s use of symbolism is another highlight. The titular “fragmentation” manifests not only in the protagonist’s fractured mental state but also in the fragmented storytelling style. Disjointed timelines and erratic chapter transitions echo Rodrigo’s turmoil. While some might find this challenging to follow, I found it an effective way to mirror the character’s psyche. The recurring appearances of eerie figures, such as the veiled woman in the foam club, lend an almost dreamlike quality that keeps the reader guessing. Is it reality, hallucination, or something else entirely?

Fragmentation Vol II: In Search Of is an ambitious and gritty exploration of a fractured soul. It’s intense, chaotic, and at times overwhelming, much like its protagonist. But for those who enjoy psychological thrillers with a side of the surreal, this book delivers. It’s a great fit for readers who like their stories dark and introspective, akin to works by Dostoevsky or Palahniuk. If you’re willing to embrace the chaos and let the story pull you into its fragmented depths, it’s a journey worth taking.

The Perfect Backdrop

Ana Mawaring Author Interview

Kickback follows a woman who receives a call from an old friend telling her that her daughter has been kidnapped, leading her to go to Mexico to rescue the child. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

Three days after flying to Minneapolis for a memorial, my husband and I came down with COVID and were stuck in our Air B&B for a week. With nothing to do, I spent a lot of time surfing the net and happened on an article about the State of Mexico issuing phony contracts for goods and services. My blood surged; I got goosebumps. This was the perfect backdrop to a political thriller I wanted to write. When Aisling is kidnapped, Dafne’s BFF from Cambridge, a journalist, calls her pulling her into the sphere of the corruption. No spoilers!

What was the inspiration for the main character’s traits and dialogue?

Dafne lives in Mexico City, the daughter of a wealthy Mexican real estate empire and a British filmmaker. At her Cambridge women’s college, Dafne organizes the release of a kidnapped co-ed and has continued hostage negotiation as a side gig since. Dafne’s personality is based on a co-worker I had in the 80s, smart, cheerful, funny, pushy, and a little wild. Dafne introduced herself to readers in (Literary Titan Silver award winner) Nothing Comes After Z and wouldn’t let go. Her half-Mexican, half-British upbringing gives her a unique perspective. I’m grateful to my BritCrit group—three British novelists who are my first line of critique. They know the vocabulary!

When you first sat down to write this story, did you know where you were going, or did the twists come as you were writing?

I plotted much of the book, listening to Dafne dictate in my head before I sat down in October 2023 to, OMG! outline. When I started writing in November for Nanowrimo (yes, I “won”) I had all the plot points as guide posts. Dafne is not one to toe the line and she often acted outside the plot outline, surprising me, and adding tons of spontaneity and excitement to the plot, including a few chapters I hadn’t anticipated—the visit to the chareada was all hers! I mean, how would I have known she took riding lessons as a kid? I should have known she’d take over.

When will book two be available? Can you give us an idea of where that book will take readers?

Dafne Olabarrieta’s first Mexico Mystery launched for Thanksgiving 2024. My next research trip to Mexico is scheduled for January where I’ll be visiting the site of one of the giant Mexico City dumps. Like here, the dumps in Mexico are run by garbage mafias, and someone Dafne is close to will be found dead by a dump picker, drawing her into the corrupt world of trash collection. Hopefully, it will be out in 2027. Be sure to plug your nose when you read! I’ll also visit the Cuernavaca site of the takedown of the Beltran Leyva Organization kingpin for the sixth JadeAnne Stone Mexico Adventure, scheduled for fall 2025. And if you’re a domestic suspense lover, 2025 is slated for release of a standalone novel co-written with my ex (read Literary Titan gold book winner, Saints and Skeletons). It’s set in Veracruz on the Gulf of Mexico and has plenty of betrayals, revenge, and murders to satisfy the most crime-voracious reader.

From high-speed car chases to intense shootouts, Kickback delivers non-stop action and suspense. But this isn’t just a thriller; it’s a deeply emotional journey of a woman torn between duty and desire, love and loyalty.

Will Dafne save the innocent child and bring the perpetrators to justice, or will she become the next victim in this deadly game? Perfect for fans of fast-paced thrillers with strong female leads, this novel will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last word.

The Real King of Miami

Eric Sande’s The Real King of Miami offers a gripping dive into the world of crime through the eyes of Ray “Li’l Ray” Thompson, who recounts his story from Death Row at Zephyrhills Correctional Institution in Pasco County, Florida. This true crime novel stands out for its unique perspective, as it is largely based on interviews between the author and Thompson. Instead of an analytical recounting of facts, Sande delivers a narrative that reads like an intense thriller akin to Scarface or Narcos.

The prologue hooks readers immediately with the climactic murder of Jimmy Savoy, one of Ray’s employees who had betrayed him by stealing a substantial amount of money. From there, the narrative rewinds to delve into the author’s fascination with Li’l Ray, setting the stage for an in-depth exploration of Ray’s operations in the marijuana smuggling world. The story, though dense with characters, ultimately centers on the critical event aboard the boat where Jimmy was killed. This book is not for the faint of heart. Its pages are laden with expletives, adding a raw and authentic feel to the storytelling. For readers who can overlook the language, these elements contribute significantly to the book’s realism and immersive quality. The narrative is so compelling that many readers might find themselves finishing the book in one sitting.

The Real King of Miami is a must-read for true crime enthusiasts looking to break away from dry, report-like accounts. Sande’s book offers a shorter yet equally hard-hitting experience, making it a standout addition to any true crime fan’s reading list.
