Wings of Death
Posted by Literary Titan

Wings of Death by Ellen Read is a captivating mystery novel that transports readers across the enchanting backdrops of London, Paris, Cairo, and Melbourne, Australia. The novel provides tantalizing glimpses of these vibrant locations. However, the true essence of the narrative lies in the remarkable perspective of Cassandra Bain, an artistic fashion designer. Intense and imbued with a touch of paranoia, Cassandra finds herself entangled in a web of infidelity and betrayal as her unfaithfulness to her husband is revealed, and her loyal assistant abandons her for another designer, masquerading as a confidante.
Yet Cassandra’s suspicions reach beyond these personal betrayals. She questions the sincerity of her lover’s affection due to his meager offerings. Similarly, Leigh seems to reciprocate this doubt, as Cassandra’s desires revolve solely around material possessions that sparkle. Astonishingly, Leigh’s gift, a scarab beetle bearing the ominous name Wings of Death, hails from the tomb of the magician Imhotep. Tutankhamun’s tomb bears a dire warning etched into its walls, declaring that those who disturb the pharaoh’s peace will be felled by the wings of death. As a perplexing ailment afflicts everyone who comes into contact with the scarab, including Cassandra, her newly appointed secretary, and even the gardener, who only brushes against it fleetingly, Leigh becomes its ultimate victim.
Driven by a relentless curiosity, Cassandra leads this motley group to Cairo in search of answers surrounding the enigmatic scarab. It is there that she discovers Leigh denying any involvement with a disquieting stranger, who inexplicably shadows their every move across multiple countries. As the mystery deepens, questions arise. What is the nature of the insidious illness plaguing them? Could it be the dreaded curse of the pharaohs? Will they find the strength to combat the affliction, or will they succumb, one by one, to its sinister grasp? Or perhaps, concealed within these dark events lurks a more benign yet equally petrifying menace—a real-world murderer?
Ellen Read masterfully weaves together a tale that combines intrigue, ancient mythology, and the raw human emotions of love and betrayal. The narrative’s strength lies in its ability to draw readers into Cassandra’s world, where every interaction and revelation unfolds with palpable tension. With an evocative and meticulously crafted setting, the novel effortlessly transports us from one captivating location to another while keeping the focus firmly on the psychological nuances of its characters. As the plot unfurls, the sinister undercurrents steadily intensify, leaving readers on the edge of their seats, yearning to uncover the truth concealed within the cryptic scarab and the harrowing journey it sets in motion.
In Wings of Death, Ellen Read seamlessly merges elements of mystery, suspense, and a touch of the supernatural to deliver a profoundly engrossing narrative that will captivate discerning readers seeking a thought-provoking and enthralling reading experience.

Children of Kings
Posted by Literary Titan

In the midst of the transformative and tumultuous nineteenth century, South America underwent a period of profound metamorphosis. As the Spanish colonization profoundly reshaped the landscapes and cultures of the indigenous people of Alto Peru, the aftermath left a trail of far-reaching consequences. Children of Kings by E.S. Ramirez compellingly transports us into this era through the story of one formidable woman fiercely committed to safeguarding her loved ones and preserving her identity amidst the maelstrom of political upheaval and revolutionary fervor that engulfs her homeland.
Our protagonist is tenacious and resolute and exhibits a fiery temper, traits that equip her to navigate the perilous terrain of her times and confront those who threaten her peace, irrespective of their identity or intentions. The novel is anchored in the life of Juana Azurduy, painting a panoramic view of her journey from childhood through adulthood as she grapples with the harsh realities of living in what may be described as South America’s own version of the Wild West.
Children of Kings delves into the struggles of indigenous groups grappling with their identity and the quest for independence two centuries into the colonization process. The narrative also draws into focus the rise of revolutionary movements ignited by military tensions in Europe, along with the personal conflicts stirred by Juana’s indomitable spirit. These elements conspire to steer Juana, her family, and her friends down a treacherous path of survival, where sacrifices are inevitable, and losses are a painful certainty.
E.S. Ramirez conjures a vibrant and richly textured depiction of the epoch in which the story unfolds. The narrative is imbued with intricate details infused with cultural significance, creating a vivid tableau where characters experience life’s full spectrum – from love to conflict and the ultimate sacrifice – in a manner that is as compelling as it is authentic. Unflinchingly, the novel delves into the stark violence that punctuates this era, making it a mature piece of historical fiction that is likely to resonate with aficionados of South American history or those seeking to immerse themselves in this distinctive time period.
Children of Kings is more than a historical novel—it’s an immersive journey back in time, offering readers a window into the resilient spirit of a woman and a vivid exploration of a complex era. As such, this beautifully penned novel comes with a high recommendation.

Princess of the Blood-A Tapestry of Love and War in 16th-Century France
Posted by Literary Titan

In the realm of historical fiction, the art of vividly evoking an era is paramount, enabling the reader to time travel through pages and delight in the resonance of actual historical events woven into the narrative fabric.
Such is the case in Brigette Goldstein’s Princess of the Blood, a spellbinding journey to 1588, an era marked by religious turmoil. Our guide through this maelstrom is Sandrine, an innkeeper’s adopted daughter, whose life takes a radical twist upon crossing paths with Captain Philippe. With a labyrinth of unexpected turns and revelations, Sandrine’s quest for self-discovery forms the backbone of the narrative.
Goldstein’s novel is an exemplar of historical fiction done justice. From the moment the first page unfurls, the reader is seamlessly transported into 16th-century France. The tangible descriptions, authentic dialogues, and captivating settings convey an atmosphere that seems plucked directly from an age-old chronicle.
Sandrine, as a character, solicits empathy effortlessly from the outset. The reader is not just drawn into cheering for her triumphs but also becomes invested in her pursuit of unveiling the mysteries of her lineage. As Goldstein subtly disseminates clues, the eventual revelation of Sandrine’s origins, while surprising, dovetails seamlessly with the preceding hints, delivering a satisfying resolution.
Yet, Sandrine’s personal journey is not the only focal point of the narrative. The raging war that engulfs France serves as an integral backdrop, deftly handled by Goldstein. She masterfully synchronizes these dual narratives, culminating in an impressive, resonant convergence.
Goldstein’s dexterity in intertwining historical accounts with an evocative narrative keeps the reader riveted until the final punctuation mark. Consequently, Princess of the Blood warrants high praise and an enthusiastic recommendation – an accolade not easily conferred upon every work within the historical fiction genre.

Sweepings of the Street
Posted by Literary Titan

Sweepings of the Street, an arresting and emotionally charged historical fiction novel by Amanda Denney, is a striking exploration of the human condition set against the gritty backdrop of Regency-era England. This coming-of-age tale digs deep into universal themes such as family, grief, loss, poverty, exploitation, trauma, and mental health, all meticulously woven into a compelling narrative featuring a robust assortment of characters, each embroiled in their unique struggles and ambitions.
The narrative spotlights twelve-year-old Sarah Lee and her family, skillfully guiding us through their strenuous journey and struggle for survival amidst a time of remarkable historical change. Following a severe famine in the spring of 1816, Sarah’s family is compelled to abandon their rural home for the promise of work in a textile factory in burgeoning industrial London. A tragic factory accident leaves her father incapacitated, pushing the family into dire financial straits. With no other conceivable alternatives, young Sarah resorts to masquerading as a boy to undertake the perilous job of a chimney sweeper. In this new life, she finds unexpected friendships, endures heart-wrenching losses, and learns to steer through the grim realities of urban poverty.
Denney’s storytelling shines through in the deeply drawn characters and the visceral depiction of human emotions and relationships. Sweepings of the Street presents a narrative about the quest for identity and the resilience to find joy in life despite formidable challenges.
The narrative adeptly portrays the stark reality faced by people during the Industrial Revolution in England, from rampant poverty to brutal working conditions. The author’s writing style is enveloping and emotionally resonant, captivating readers and transporting them back to Regency England. Her portrayal of grief is moving, drawing out empathetic tears from the readers. I recommend this exceptional historical fiction novel to all who appreciate introspective, evocative literature that challenges and engages the mind and heart.

My First Book
Posted by Literary_Titan

Blood Fortune follows five individuals who discover a 500-year-old treasure in a West Texas cave putting their lives in grave danger. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?
It started with the thought of Aztec gold. I liked the idea that if the Spanish never found much gold, maybe it was because it had already been moved. The Aztec storyline was originally just intended to be the opening chapter of the book. It flowed so easily, and I really enjoyed writing it, so I ending up going with the dual timelines.
Your novel is a genre-crossing with elements of Science Fiction, Historical Fiction, suspense, and adventure as well. Did you start writing with this in mind, or did this happen organically as you were writing?
I didn’t start with it in mind. I was inexperienced, and didn’t know any better! I was planning more of an action story. Then it needed the historical fiction elements with the Aztecs. I was pretty far into a draft, when I realized it would be more exciting if the second timeline was in the future. The odds of finding the gold with no consequences seemed to drop significantly in the future that I described. This opened up a lot of Science Fiction possibilities. It was my first book, and I didn’t know how difficult crossing genres could be.
What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?
I suppose that the Aztec’s complete devotion to a cause, was an important one for me. Time marches forward, no matter who you are. No matter when you are. They took something to protect, something so important to their people. This did take much more research than I had any idea that it would, but it was well worth it.
Is this the first book in the series? If so, when is the next book coming out and what can your fans expect in the next story?
My next book follows a few of the characters from Blood Fortune in the years that follow. I wouldn’t say that it’s a direct sequel, but it would be considered the next in a series. I’m planning to launch the next book in May, 2024.
