Our Collaborative Effort

Victoria E. Pannell and Thorir Sigfusson Author Interview

The Big Dream follows two best friends who want to enter a remote-controlled car race, but first, they must raise $2000 while dealing with school, family & a mischievous crow. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

The Big Dream has a transformational tale. It is book two in The Crow’s Tales series; however, it was written before book one. The most recent publication is the second edition of what originally was a Christmas gift for our four grandchildren. Since then, we’ve taken a more serious approach to writing and the story underwent a substantial makeover. The genesis of the story is attributed to Thorir more than fifteen years ago scribbling notes about his ten-year-old self growing up in Iceland with his friends. Pigeons, ravens, and seabirds were accessible and gave inspiration to the book’s pet crow, Ralph, and the original title, The Pigeon Flyer. Retirement sparked our collaborative effort on Thorir’s drafts, resulting in a lasting story for our grandchildren and a shared passion.

There were a lot of great twists and turns throughout the novel. Did you plan this before writing the novel, or did the twists develop organically writing?

Thank you for the comment and the question. The Big Dream’s twists and turns occurred as a hybrid of planning and merely following where the story took us. The crafting of those events, however, was carefully staged. As new writers, we’ve learned pacing is one of the critical elements of a good middle-grade story, and having twists and turns hit in the right place encourages reader engagement.

Constant action, fast pace, and a quick read is our attempt to compete with computer games, tablets, TVs, and other electronic social media for kids’ attention. It’s an uphill battle. Victoria is a retired schoolteacher and has a background in shaping young minds. We try to cater to how kids think today and how fast their world has become, it keeps us racing through our golden years.

What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?

We strive to create contemporary realistic fiction for young readers offering important themes without being in-your-face didactic. Each book in the series offers its unique theme. The Big Dream is a quietly compelling story of honesty while integrating additional important values such as friendship, teamwork, and perseverance. These themes are woven into the narrative, offering young readers meaningful insights while maintaining the story’s engaging, lighthearted tone. The book subtly imparts lessons on these themes, illustrating how challenges can be overcome through collaboration and understanding.

The challenge we set for ourselves is to write relatable and wholesome narratives featuring characters and events that readers can identify with, providing entertainment and meaningful value. The Crow’s Tales series, The Bird Caper, book one, explores “change,” The Big Dream, book two, shines a light on “honesty”, and book three, The Crow’s Ring, will explore “truth.” All valuable life lessons.

When will book three be available? Can you give us an idea of where that book will take readers?

We are super excited about working on the third book of the series, The Crow’s Ring, and expect it to be released early in 2026. It’s a mystery and it will keep readers on their toes. The main characters are older, and the story’s plot gets precarious. Brandon’s (our protagonist) friends (and pet crow) become entangled with a scruffy old police detective – the Captain – who owns a rusty dank tugboat destined to be scrapped by the city (Riverside). Roped into helping him save his tug, the kids find a confidential police file on board of an unresolved jewelry heist that took place in the 1930s, the Stony Creek Case. Solving this cold case could save the crusty Captain’s career and repair his tug with the million-dollar reward for finding the stolen loot. It’s a journey filled with nail-biting adventures that turn Riverside upside down and capture the imagination. Through their hair-raising experiences, Brandon learns the value of truth. He and his friends learn the importance of history, determination, and the meaning of working as a team to resolve complicated questions and conflicts, to uncover the truth.

Face the World with Compassion

August E. Allen Author Interview

The Alpine Dragon Legends is a collection of stories that unveils fantastic dragons with unique lessons on empathy, kindness, friendship, compassion, respect, self-esteem & self-expression. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

As a lifelong lover of fantasy and storytelling, the inspiration to write a book for children about dragons came from a deep desire to weave timeless values into captivating tales. Growing up, I was enchanted by the mythical creatures that roamed the pages of my favorite books, yet I often wished for stories that not only thrilled but portrayed the dragon in a positive light, rather than the typical evil creature in need of slaying.

What were some themes that were important for me to explore in this book:

Dragons, with their rich symbolism and varied portrayals, offer a perfect canvas to explore themes of kindness, empathy, respect, and compassion. These magnificent creatures can represent both fear and friendship, allowing young readers to engage with complex emotions in a safe and imaginative way. I wanted to create a world where dragons are not just fearsome beasts but also wise mentors and loyal friends, guiding children through their own journeys of understanding and connection.

In a time when empathy seems more crucial than ever, I felt compelled to craft narratives that encourage young readers to embrace these values. Through the adventures of brave protagonists who encounter dragons, I aim to show that kindness can conquer fear and that respect for others—whether human or dragon—leads to deeper friendships and understanding.

What was my favorite scene in this story, narrative or illustration:

This is a tough question! When spending such a very long time on a book as both illustrator and author one becomes attached to each character portrayed. I must say, however, that I love the illustration of the Sylvan Cathedral drawn as stained glass, and the portrait of Rhygar the best. The lessons learned in each story are an extremely important part of this book; my goal and passion is to inspire a new generation to face the world with compassion and an open heart, using the enchanting backdrop of dragons to spark their imaginations and nurture their moral growth.

What is the next book I will be offering:

My next book is the second in the series THAT CAT, to be published April 7th, and titled I Am NOT That Cat. The series boasts full-page artwork accompanied by humorous rhyming poems. I am also working on another title called Dragon Encounters. This book will not be published until the end of the year. The 3rd book in the THAT CAT series will become available in 2026.

In a world where dragons soar through the skies, weave tales of enchantment, and inspire awe and wonder, there lies a collection of legendary creatures that have captivated imaginations for centuries. This title unveils the truth behind several of these myths, revealing that the legends of dragons are not mere fables but true accounts of remarkable beings that have forever etched themselves into the tapestry of human existence.

Included in The Alpine Dragon Legends are restored dragon portraits from the eighteenth century by explorer, dragon enthusiast and artist, Vincent Laurent.

The Alpine Dragon Legends invites readers to believe in the magic of the past, proving that sometimes legends are mere echoes of truths that refuse to fade away. Each legend unveils an extraordinary dragon, each deeply connected to the natural world and with a unique lesson to share: Empathy, kindness, the value of friendship, compassion, respect, self-esteem and self-expression are all celebrated in this title.

The Alpine Dragon Legends ignites the imagination and inspires a sense of wonder. With vibrant illustrations and heartwarming narratives, these stories will enchant young readers, nurturing their belief in the boundless possibilities of the world around them.

The Alpine Dragon Legends

Over two centuries ago, dragons ruled the skies and lurked in the deepest caverns of the Alpine Mountains. These legendary beasts, steeped in mystery, carried ancient wisdom from forgotten ages. Now, for the first time in generations, they are forced to cross paths with humankind once again. Can these vastly different creatures find a way to coexist, or will power and fear spark an unstoppable clash?

The Alpine Dragon Legends by August E. Allen contains three enchanting tales that unfold like timeless legends, each feeling like a story whispered by firelight on a crisp spring night. The writing is rich, weaving mystery and grandeur into every word. The setting alone had me hooked, and the stunning illustrations, detailed dragons, intricate maps, and more bring the world to life in breathtaking fashion.

Unlike the usual dragon tales filled with endless battles and destruction, these stories take a different path. They’re about courage, empathy, and the power of understanding. Instead of swords clashing, the focus is on choices that shape not just individuals but entire worlds. I loved the message of caring for the planet and finding strength in compassion rather than conquest.

I was completely captivated and found myself wishing for more. The stories move at an exhilarating pace, making them easy to devour in one sitting, but I would have loved the chance to linger longer in those moments of connection between humans and dragons. Vincent’s journey to free Rhygar from his curse was mesmerizing. I could have followed it for many more pages. Saphyrax’s struggle between protection and understanding was deeply compelling, and I wanted to explore even more of his choices. The world feels vast and rich, leaving just enough mystery to spark the imagination, and I can only hope there are more stories waiting to be told.

With an unforgettable setting and lyrical storytelling, The Alpine Dragon Legends is perfect for readers aged 8-12 who adore fairy tales, myths, and, of course, dragons. Whether devoured in one sitting or revisited time and again, this is a book meant to be shared, remembered, and carried along on your adventures.

The Missing Children of Blackwood

Brian Starr’s The Missing Children of Blackwood is the kind of book that grips you from the first sentence and refuses to let go. It follows twelve-year-old Daphne Elloise Planter (Daph for short), a sharp, quirky, and self-assured protagonist with a knack for storytelling, as she gets swept into the eerie legend of Blackwood, a town haunted by its dark past and the mysterious disappearances of children. As Daph, her writer-parents, and her massive dog Sparrow set off on a so-called “legend-hunting” adventure, they soon realize that some legends aren’t just stories. Strange warnings, supernatural occurrences, and an ever-thickening fog lead Daph to one terrifying realization: she may not make it out of Blackwood alive.

The book’s greatest strength is Daph herself. She’s witty, defiant, and full of personality, cracking jokes even when she’s in the middle of a terrifying situation. Her opening lines, where she nonchalantly talks about her inevitable death, set the tone for a darkly humorous and adventurous ride. She’s also a wonderfully unreliable narrator in the best way possible. She claims to believe in logic over myths, but her fascination with the unknown pulls her deeper into the town’s secrets. When she first sees the ghostly girl near Blackwood’s entrance, her reaction isn’t just fear; it’s excitement, curiosity, and just the right amount of sass. The mix of humor and horror is balanced so well that even the scariest moments never feel overdone.

The moment Daph and her parents arrive at the ominous fork in the road (with a literal blood-red sign pointing toward death), the tension ratchets up. The slow build-up, the weird trucker lady who bolts at the mere mention of Blackwood, and the way Daph describes the gnarled trees as an “express lane into Terrorville” all add up to a setting that feels alive, like the town is waiting, watching. The scene where the family enters the foggy tunnel, and suddenly, Daphne’s parents start floating, completely unaware, completely silent, had me chilled to the bone. The writing doesn’t just describe fear; it pulls you into it.

The book takes its time setting up the legend of Blackwood, making sure you know the gruesome backstory before the real horror begins. Some might find the first few chapters a little slow, but I actually loved the way it lured me in. It gave me a chance to really get to know Daph and her parents, to appreciate their banter, and to feel that false sense of security before things started unraveling. However, once the mystery kicks into high gear, the pages fly by. The moment Daph is separated from her parents and realizes that she’s truly alone, you feel the shift. The writing gets sharper, the danger more real, and the question of what’s really lurking in Blackwood becomes an obsession.

The Missing Children of Blackwood is perfect for those who love spooky mysteries, snarky narrators, and stories that feel like a campfire tale come to life. It’s got Coraline vibes but with more humor, a splash of horror, and a protagonist who refuses to be just another missing child. If you spook easily, don’t read this one at night, but if you’re up for an eerie, funny, and surprisingly heartfelt adventure, this book is for you.

I Created the Books I Wanted to Read

Elora Sofia Author Interview

The Guardians: Rise of the Phantom follows the guardians entrusted with protecting the realm of Felina, who must take action to protect it from a new dark enemy that has unleashed destruction and chaos on the peaceful world. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

As an avid reader, I began noticing how there weren’t any specific books available in the niche genre I wanted, so I created one. I first began writing this book when I was 12, and I didn’t fully know where to go with it. My mom and I have brainstormed for hours every day since then to create this entire world. So, I guess my mom was partly the inspiration, and the other inspiration was my own curiosity and excitement about the world my characters would live in.

I find the world you created in this novel brimming with possibilities. Where did the inspiration for the setting come from, and how did it change as you were writing?

My inspiration actually came from another story, a novella that I had dictated to my mother when I was nine. That story had a setup where there were these cat people who needed to protect the world from ruthless dogs. Writing this book, I decided to take the its concept and evolve it to meet with my target audience.

What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?

Being 12, 13, and now 14, I truly didn’t care about themes. I wanted to write an exciting book people couldn’t put down. Over these few years, my mom and I talked about all the ways in which each character’s life could play out. Moral dilemmas, hard choices, and taking sadness in stride became common topics where we would explore characterization from a deep level. As I got to know my characters, since they kind of became their own being at one point, I could see they had things to learn and experience for themselves, and that is the origination of this book’s themes.

Where does the story go in the next book, and where do you see it going in the future?

The story in the next book introduces the much-anticipated Phantom and the Guardian Coralees, along with her underwater dwelling Mizus. Together with her help, Alada, Tierra, and Birch are able to gather new intel on the beast’s glitching abilities, and the Phantom’s lair. Meanwhile, the Phantom continues to prepare for the start of war. Readers will be transported to his lair and what comes of that is the unfurling of a history long forgotten.

There are six books in the series. One book will be published and released every December. More books may be added to the series.

For centuries, the realm of Felina thrived in peace, safeguarded by the four Guardians: Alada, Tierra, Coral, and Ember. But everything changed when the mystical Bioluminescent Forest was engulfed in flames, and strange, glitching beasts launched a brutal attack on the Central Village. These formidable creatures, unlike anything seen before, stormed the village with uncanny speed and strength.
Yet, the attack was only the beginning. As the smoke cleared, a chilling message appeared on a large boulder: You are now under the command of the Phantom. With this dark threat looming over the land, Alada and Tierra knew they had to protect Felina. Rallying their courage, Alada and Tierra prepared to warn the other villages… until Birch, a trophy-toting nobody with more enthusiasm than skill, insisted on tagging along. Fantastic. Because that’s exactly what they needed.
