Doubloon Cove: The Secret of the Templars’ Satchel

The latest book in the Doubloon Cove series, The Secret of the Templars’ Satchel, takes readers on a whirlwind adventure set against the nostalgic backdrop of 1990s America. As we journey with Jeffery, Cindy, and Steven during a seemingly quiet weekend in Salem, Massachusetts, tranquility quickly gives way to suspense. An unexpected turn of events sees Stacey’s father, a member of the Freemasons, kidnapped. With a ransom demand hinging on a mysterious satchel, our young protagonists find themselves entangled in a quest that promises layers of truths, ancient secrets, and an urgent mission to save Stacey’s father.

A standout feature of Novak’s work is the seamless integration of themes, from the adrenaline-charged adventure to the deeper undertones of responsibility accompanying power and knowledge. The narrative cautions of the potential peril when knowledge lands in malicious hands, a lesson as timeless as it is pertinent. Complementing the storyline, the intricate puzzles and illustrations enhance immersion, pulling the reader into the heart of the mystery.

Equally commendable is Novak’s portrayal of a character of color, which is genuine and bereft of unnecessary emphasis. This character shines with depth, escaping the limiting confines of token representation. The authentic dynamics between the children, marked by their individuality and camaraderie, make it easy to champion their cause.

While The Secret of the Templars’ Satchel is a compelling read, I felt a slight unevenness in its pacing. After the initial major event, it seemed like the book was winding down, making the shift to the subsequent event a bit unexpected.

Kelly Novak delivers a captivating read with Doubloon Cove: The Secret of the Templars’ Satchel, which will particularly resonate with fans of classics like Indiana Jones and Nancy Drew. Brimming with mystery, action, and the magic of friendship, this book is bound to enthrall series enthusiasts and new readers alike.

River’s Reach: Coming of Age Amid the Fish War

Prepare to embark on a transformative journey through the pages of River’s Reach by David Scott Richardson, a compelling coming-of-age novel that introduces us to Alex Haugen, a high school student on the cusp of self-discovery. Set against the backdrop of a long-standing conflict between the Washington State Game Department and local Indian tribes, this captivating story unfolds as Alex stumbles upon a revelation about his father’s involvement in a historic fishing raid at Frank’s Landing. Intrigued and spurred by a thirst for understanding, Alex delves deep into the history of the Nisqually tribe, a journey that raises thought-provoking questions about the narratives that shape our beliefs and values. Along this enlightening path, he forges unlikely friendships that open his eyes to the multifaceted nature of truth.

River’s Reach is an educational and enthralling tapestry that artfully weaves together historical context with themes of environmental conservation and civil rights. As readers become immersed in Alex’s personal odyssey, they are simultaneously drawn into a broader exploration of history, social justice, and cultural complexities. The evolution of Alex’s character is nothing short of commendable, as he evolves from a conforming teenager into an independent thinker. The relationships he forms throughout the narrative add depth and nuance, underscoring the significance of empathy in bridging cultural divides. Through Alex’s journey, the book challenges the notion of birthright and opens the door to new perspectives. While River’s Reach is well-suited for a younger audience, it does contain occasional strong language. However, this minor caveat should not deter readers of all ages from delving into this enriching tale that seamlessly balances entertainment with deep reflection. At its core, the book imparts a valuable lesson: true growth springs from questioning the status quo and discovering our own voices.

River’s Reach by David Scott Richardson, while rich in historical detail, may occasionally veer toward excessive exposition, which can momentarily slow the narrative’s pacing. Nevertheless, the story remains authentic to its characters and their experiences, ensuring a memorable reading experience that will leave its mark on its audience.

I Want To Inspire Kids

Author Interview
Mona Semerau Author Interview

Ranbir follows a 7-year-old boy who takes a challenge to fold the state of Nebraska 50 times and winds up on an adventure learning higher mathematics.  What was the inspiration for the original and fascinating idea at the center of the book?

It all goes back to my fascination with the scale on a slide rule.  I’d never been taught how to use one — how is it possible to make such complicated calculations just by sliding two sticks together?  When Buck imagines the state of Nebraska as one huge sheet of 20# copy paper, the principle of doubling what was doubled before begins to take shape in his mind. The slide rule follows the same idea, except each doubling gets squished into the same space as the previous one.

What were some educational aspects that were important for you to include in this children’s book?

That kids can be introduced to mathematical concepts well above their grade level using very simple imagery.  And keep it outrageously funny to make it easier to remember.

This book is really intended not for kids, but for adult teachers and educators who can interactively communicate these ideas to their students.

What were some goals you set for yourself as a writer in this book?

I wanted to maintain the exuberance and innocence of a seven-year-old as he navigates a world of ideas, catch-phrases, expectations, and challenges.  From “I can’t do this, this is way beyond me” (I’m just a little kid!) to “Huh!  I just learned something.  I just did something!”

What is the next book that you are working on, and when will it be available?

I do not have another book in mind at this time.  However, Atmosphere Press is helping me set up a website, ranbirsliderule.com.  I hope this might serve as a base to inspire fresh ideas for introducing math —  perhaps other STEM subjects as well — to young kids (and curious adults) on a count-on-your-fingers level.

Ranbir told me about a little game once. He asked me how thick would a block of paper be if you could fold one sheet 50 times. I thought a bit and finally made a “C” with my hand. “I’n’know, this thick?” He laughed and called me a dummy. Try it! he said, but be sure you have a big sheet of paper. Really big.

My name is Buck O’Doul. I’m only seven years old. I decided to take up this challenge and fold the state
of Nebraska 50 times and see what I came up with.

Little did I know what I was getting into — I was being sucked into the world of higher mathematics, squares and square roots, hooky things, squishy scales and logarithms, and all pretty much just by counting on my fingers!

I Want To Inspire and Motivate Others

Miles McAlister Author Interview

Look Within II: Environment is Key follows an ambitious and intelligent young boy who wants to help his village thrive after hearing the elders’ concerns about fuel sources. What was the inspiration for your story?

Look Within II, is the follow-up to my first ever published book! Look Within: a story about discovering the key to success. After receiving so much positive feedback, and the overwhelming love and support especially from young people. I was moved to expand the world created in the first book, and dive deeper into some of the aspects of personal development that many of the readers resonated with. Most notable the importance of environment.

Kim wants to fit in but struggles with interacting with his peers despite his intelligence. What was the inspiration for the main character’s traits and challenges?

The inspiration for our main character’s story was sparked by conversations I’ve had, mainly with young people, about the importance of looking within to identify our values, morals, and the goals we set for ourselves before seeking outside validation. We all find ourselves in various environments: school, work, community, clubs, religious groups, etc. From these environments, we naturally develop behaviors and traits, sometimes to “fit in.” However, once we truly understand ourselves—our likes, dislikes, and the things we need to help us grow and thrive—we become aware of how to shape our environment to suit US instead of trying to “fit in” to an environment that doesn’t align with our goals or bring us true happiness.

What were some educational aspects that were important for you to include in this children’s book?

At this stage of my life, I am genuinely excited about learning. The most significant difference between my current mindset and me as a child in school is when I began seeking out subjects that genuinely sparked my interest. From my experience, the educational system often adopts a one-size-fits-all approach, neglecting the importance of personal introspection and taking responsibility for learning in alignment with our individual goals. Through an easily readable and well-illustrated story, my goal was to convey this message and inspire others to embark on their unique journey of growth, igniting their enthusiasm for learning and pursuing their genuine interests. I firmly believe that if I had been exposed to this perspective earlier in life, it would have profoundly impacted me. Therefore, my goal is to utilize these stories as a means to inspire and motivate others.

What is the next book in the Look Within series that you are working on and when will it be available?

I would really like to see more feedback, and support on my work up to this point. But I can definitely see the Look Within series as a trilogy! And depending on what conversations come from LOOK WITHIN books 1 & 2 a third book could be on the way very soon! So please PLEASE support and leave feedback, and I’m always very appreciative, and will continue to inspire through writing and working in my purpose.

This is truly a remarkable addition to children’s fiction.

Watch What You Wish For

Watch What You Wish For: After all, wishes aren't always just about fairy tales... (Mariposa Mysteries Book 1) by [Valerie Anne Hudson]

Watch What You Wish For is a middle-grade story following a girl named Sophie and a tree with magical powers, infamous for being evil. I absolutely enjoyed this rousing adventure story! Although the characters are in seventh grade their age did not take away from the story’s depth; I was entertained from beginning to end.

I personally loved the character of Sophie, she’s troubled and easily influenced because she wants to be liked and she yearns for companionship–all of that made her relatable and realistic. Sure, this book has a clear morality lesson: be careful what you wish for, because you never know the outcome, but the story goes beyond the conceptual with a mystical narrative filled with expressive characters. The reader witnesses Sophie’s character slowly develop throughout the story. She has made bad decisions in the past, influenced by someone she thought was her friend and we are able to see her take accountability for her actions by the end of the story, and it is satisfying to see.

Author Valerie Anne Hudson does a wonderful job in portraying different types of friendships and relationships that Sophie has had that lead up to the beginning of the story. The refreshing writing style definitely compliments this creative story as each chapter leads up to and hints at what is to come in some entertaining ways. I am even more intrigued by how the story ended, wrapped up quite nicely but with potential for a must-read sequel. I would love to see the story behind Merle and his magic tricks.

Watch What You Wish For is a fast paced coming of age adventure novel that infuses magic and adventure into the story in inventive and captivating ways. This is the type of story I loved when I was younger. With some unforgettable scenes, inspired characters, and a fun storyline, this book will entertain anyone.
