A Turbulent Mind

A Turbulent Mind: My Journey to Ironman 70.3 by [Swetha Amit]

A Turbulent Mind: My Journey to Ironman 70.3 is a motivational book that will have you focus on your strengths and prioritize the most important things in life. The author uses experiences from her life and lessons learned to pass the message of hope and resilience to readers. Shweta Amit uses simple but inspiring language that speaks directly to readers. She is candid in her writing and tells it as it is. Not many people get to open up and be vulnerable to the world the ways Shweta Amit does. I particularly like her style of writing because she considers people from different backgrounds when discussing the various topics in the book. A Turbulent Mind: My Journey to Ironman 70.3 will make you feel like you belong and that your presence is felt.

Shweta Amit shares her journey to achieving the Ironman 70.3. It was never easy but she pushed through. What inspired me about Shweta’s journey was that she made her story relatable to many. She writes about every experience, even the most minute. For someone who had a fear of open water swimming, Shweta really outdid herself. Her story is heartening. Her words will touch that cycler who is afraid of trying the next challenge, runners that feel like giving up and that athlete who is not consistent with their training sessions, and anyone who wants more for themselves.

The author starts by introducing the basics before delving deeper into her life, making the reader understand where she is coming from. If you are looking for an inspirited memoir with amusing and uplifting stories then A Turbulent Mind: My Journey to Ironman 70.3 is the right book for you. Shweta Amit writes beautifully and gets to be funny when narrating some of her experiences. I liked the humor part as it brought levity to overall serious tone of the book, which makes agonizing stories a little less depressing. Her main message is don’t stop.

A Turbulent Mind: My Journey to Ironman 70.3 is a short but engaging memoir. Every experience chronicled is impactful. I liked that the author wrote about her wins, losses, and challenges candidly. This inspirational memoir has the potential to change your life and your outlook on life.

The Price You Pay – Book Trailer

This book explores the journey of a successful Black woman who is trying to balance family, love, and her career.

I used to believe in fairy tales. I knew that one day a Prince Charming would come and sweep me off of my feet, but those fairy tales I once believed in turned into nightmares. I once thought that love didn’t cost a thing, but I was wrong. The wrong love could cost you everything.

This is an emotional memoir that outlines a series of emotional abuse relationships plagued by cheating, jealousy and depression. The main character was able to push through and become motivation for other women who have been emotionally scared.

The Sound of Her Voice

The Sound of Her Voice by Sara Gelbard is a memoir of the author and her experience growing up in unusual and dysfunctional circumstances.

Sara was born in Western Galil near the Lebanon border, her Polish parents had barely escaped the horrors of war in Europe and as a consequence became extremely loyal to the kibbutzim. Sara grew up in a children’s home where she received barely any affection and was forced to repress her emotions or signs of individuality. She soon enrolled into the Israeli army where she excelled in combat and strategy and eventually became a Navy Officer. This however, wasn’t enough for her as she suffered from the loneliness of living without human connection. With the help of her friends, she moved to New York where she studied dance, got a BA in economics, sold real estate, and married her beloved Uruguayan husband. At seventy years old as she walked the beautiful beaches of Punta del Este, Sara had an epiphany, as she came to terms with the sadness of her upbringing, confusion at being left by her mother, and discovered the repressed voice of the child she used to be so many years past.

The Sound of Her Voice is an evocative memoir following the personal story of a remarkable woman. Someone who was born and raised in the harshest of environments and who has overcome countless obstacles unimaginable to most. The inspiring story of Sara Gelbard alludes to the sensitivity of dealing with emotional trauma and overcoming the anger and frustration of being raised in the harshest of circumstances.

Beautifully written in a combination of simple prose and a series of haikus, The Sound of Her Voice is unconventional in the best possible way. This is a unique memoir that is a must read for anyone on their own journey of healing and self-discovery.

This is definitely one of the most inspiring and eye-opening books I have ever read so far this year. Going through an emotional awakening and dealing with childhood trauma myself, I was able to closely relate to the author’s views and to extract life changing lessons to apply in my daily life. However, it’s not necessarily for people with undealt emotions of hard upbringings, anyone who picks this book up will experience a shift in the mindset to start viewing life as it is.

The Sound of Her Voice is a beautiful story with a profound message. I highly recommend this emotionally charged memoir to anyone looking for a substantive life story that is awe-inspiring.

AfterLIFE: Waking Up from My American Dream

AfterLIFE: Waking Up from My American Dream by [Carlo Pietro Sanfilippo]

For two decades, Carlo lived a life that wasn’t his and chased dreams that were handed to him. Influenced by his childhood experiences and society, he conformed to standards set by others for him. On the surface, his life was picture-perfect. He had a great job, a family, a big house, and many things he thought he needed. But deep down, he was secretly dissatisfied with his life but paid no attention to the whisper that urged him to explore his curiosities and live on his own terms. The turning point came when he lost his mom, stepfather, dad, and marriage within four years. These tragic events thrust Carlo into a deep dark pit. Feeling like he had lost all that defined him, Carlo was forced to examine his life and find himself. He rose like the phoenix from the ashes and began chasing the life he wanted.

Carlo Pietro Sanfilippo’s AfterLIFE is a true story of how the author dared to venture beyond the confines of a lifestyle prescribed by society. It displays the difference between going for what we want and accepting what life throws at us. Carlo shares the lessons he learned on the journey to purposeful living, hoping that others can benefit from them.

You know why this is different from many other self-help books you’ve read? It’s real and practical. I mean, you can actually try the things Carlo did by adapting them to the context of your situation. He took seemingly small but highly influential decisions that turned his life around. And the best part is a lot of these choices revolved around him becoming more self-aware and changing his mindset.

One point that struck me was that as much as we might like to find reasons outside of ourselves for why we aren’t doing the things we want, we are primarily the ones holding ourselves back.

I couldn’t help but note that the decision to embrace our true selves will have ripple effects on those in our sphere of influence. It could encourage them to do the same, thereby helping us draw even more satisfaction from life by seeing those we love being their best selves partly on our account.

AfterLIFE is an insightful memoir that takes readers on an enlightening journey of self-discovery with an immersive story you will not soon forget.

Nadeem’s Journey: A Heart Wrenching Story of a Loving Mother Losing Her Son to Cancer – Book Trailer

Nadeem’s Journey by Sherine Anniruth is the soulful and bittersweet story of a mother who loses her son.

Nadeem was just 25 years old when he died from cancer, but his mother’s determination for his memory to live forever is beautiful and raw. Reading this book really shows what a mother’s love can be, and being a mother myself, I understand how every little memory, laugh, joke, and good time that you had with your child can push you through the day.

Sherine is a very strong woman while going through the loss of her precious son. This story absolutely captures Nadeem’s spirit, he was a fun loving and precocious boy who adored his mom, and he turned into a hardworking man that still had his mom by his side.

This book will captivate you and wrench your heart. You’ll definitely need to grab some tissues as you read the tender accounts of Sherine’s life with Nadeem, and his last breaths.

Interspersed with pictures of Nadeem and his family, you’ll definitely get an idea of how much love was in this family, and how much light he cast on the world.

Born Under The Gaslight – Book Trailer

A Memoir of My Descent Into Borderline Personality Disorder

“What will the neighbors think?” “Keep your voice down, or the neighbors will hear you screaming.” I never knew The Neighbors, but, more importantly, they never knew my family. Right next door was a house of horror, and they indeed never knew. This is the story that was carefully concealed from you. This is the story that can happen even if you do grow up with neighbors watching.

From author Cindy Collins comes an unblinkingly honest, poignant, and often heartbreaking firsthand account of what it’s like to live with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) . . . and the pervasive trauma she endured as a child that led to her descent into the dark world of BPD. Gaslighted by her mother—who cultivated an outward appearance of being the perfect wife and mother—Cindy suffered ongoing sexual abuse by multiple family members, abandonment, and cruelty at the hands of the one person who should have loved and protected her most. The resulting fits of rage, extreme thinking, difficulty maintaining relations, and depression would set Cindy on a path of destruction until she finally found the hope and courage to fight her demons.

Chronicling her childhood of abuse, her diagnosis of BPD in her twenties, and her ultimate road to recovery, Born Under the Gaslight is a memoir like none you have ever read before. Offering a rare and insightful glimpse into the inner struggles of someone who lives with BPD, Born Under the Gaslight is a must-read for therapists, others living with BPD, and anyone wanting to understand the complexities of BPD and how to offer practical and emotional support.

Trials and Tribulations Being Born Again

Trials and Tribulations of Being Born Again, documents the journey of being a born again Christian and finding a true relationship with God. I found this to be a very truthful and relatable account of one’s relationship with God but also with the church. I think something this story does successfully is warn others about pastors that might not actually have other’s best interest at heart. The author details how at a low point in his marriage with his wife, they went to their pastor but found the pastor to be unhelpful and rather contradicting the word of God. These few chapters in which he discusses how his pastor was trying to tear him down and how it made the situation with his wife worse, really broke my heart. In my experience, and personal belief, pastors are meant to guide the congregation closer to God and provide help and wisdom. That being said, they themselves are not above any other human because of their status within the church. Reading Brown’s experience with his pastor really brought to light how not every person in that position means well, but rather they see it as a position where one can take advantage.

I really appreciated the honesty that Dionne Brown provided with this heartfelt memoir as I think others would shy from the truth. Our faith isn’t always linear but we must always trust the direction He is taking us in, and I think Brown perfectly exemplifies that in his memoir. I really enjoyed reading Dionne Brown’s own experience with becoming a born-again Christian but also his insights on how he views a relationship between a person and the Lord. I definitely think that Brown provided some useful tips on what to be aware of when talking to those in the congregation.

I would recommend Trials and Tribulations of Being Born Again to anyone who enjoys reading about a motivational journey into becoming a born-again Christian but especially to readers who are looking for an inspirational story that follows an uplifting spiritual journey.

The Early Years

The Early Years by [G. Carrington, Rachel]

The Early Years: A Memoir (Matters of the Heart Book One) by Rachel G. Carrington is an autobiography that tells the story of a young girl who was born in Kentucky in 1930. Rachel Gaylord is the oldest of eleven children, and she leaves home at seventeen. This book is a collection of short stories about her growing up and life as a young adult getting married and starting a family. These stories were taken from her journal entries that were written throughout her lifetime, beginning in her teenage years.

The Early Years is a heartfelt story of young love. Brad Carrington had an interesting story to tell Rachel after he walked her home from church, and it kept me wanting to read more. I enjoyed the descriptions of daily rural life in the 1940s, such as cooking on a woodstove, gardening, canning, and laundry, which were reminiscent of stories I have heard from my own grandparents about their experiences living on a farm. I could picture scenes similar to old family photographs I’ve viewed. Some of the stories in this book were of separate unrelated incidents, but most of the stories connect to others in a related chain of events. Many of the stories were humorous, including the wedding night chivaree.

This a touching memoir that explores a young couples relationships, and shares the high and lows one woman experiences. While I enjoyed the story, I sometimes had trouble connecting things because some events were not in chronological order. There are many interesting people that come into Rachel’s life, I thought it would be helpful if the author included a family tree to make it easier for me to connect all the people. Many of the scenes are delightfully detailed, but since this is a true story I had a desire to see what these people and places actually looked like and I would have really liked to have seen some photographs.

I desperately wanted to continue reading Rachel’s story to find out what happened after she and Brad moved their family to northern Kentucky. This is where Book Two, Dreams Born; Dream Fulfilled, picks up Rachel Gaylord Carrington’s life story. The Early Years: A Memoir is an absorbing and emotional memoir that readers will surely enjoy.
