So, I Decided To Write One

Shan Frazier Author Interview

Kittens Learn About Holidays follows a group of kittens that are adopted and need to learn about the different holidays in society to embrace their new lives. What was the inspiration for your story?

As a homeschooling mom, I remember searching for a book like this for my son when he was younger…one that encompasses an overview of a variety of holidays. I couldn’t find one. So, I decided to write one.

What were some goals you set for yourself as a writer in this book?

I wanted it to be engaging for children, understandable, and have a nice flow. I also wanted to ensure that different cultures were represented.

Did you find anything in your research of this story that surprised you?

Oh yes! I was not as knowledgeable as I had thought about several of the holidays I included. I learned quite a bit while researching.

What is the next book that you are working on and when will it be available?

I am currently working on a pet loss book for children. It’s called “I’ll Remind You” and will be available by the end of November.

Come along with the kittens as they learn about the different holidays celebrated in their homes. Holidays include Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, Independence Day, and Halloween. Birthdays are also included. This book makes learning fun!

Find A Forever Home

Clara Donis-Girma Author Interview

Clara and Mr. Milo’s Adventures follows a five-year-old girl who wants her pet and takes the time to ensure she gets the right pet and takes care of it correctly. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

My husband and I adopted Mr. Milo from a shelter in central Florida. We walked by so many sweet pets needing a loving home that it broke my heart. I wanted to find a way to encourage others to adopt shelter pets. A few days after adopting Mr. Milo, my niece Adelyn came to visit and meet Mr. Milo. She was very interested in learning about shelter pet adoption. Adelyn was only six years old, and her sweet and caring questions inspired me to write about the process we underwent to adopt Mr. Milo. Adelyn reminded me that children are eager to learn and that their innocence and selflessness can encourage the kindness and compassion needed to help shelter pets find a forever home.

The art in this book is fantastic. What was the art collaboration process like with illustrator Lana Lee?

Thank you! I enjoyed working with Lana Lee. I initially submitted a picture of Mr. Milo as a kitten and a picture of me as a child to different illustrators at Upwork. When Lana sent me her initial illustrations, I knew she was the right illustrator for my series. Lana allowed me to give her my vision, page by page. We worked together, going back and forth during the dates scheduled and at different hours of the day. Lana would send me a draft of the illustrations, and if needed, I would request changes. We worked hard on refining the images to capture my vision. Sometimes, it was a simple color change or changing the details of the expression of a character. She amazingly created every page as I imagined and finalized every episode on the scheduled dates. We worked together for almost a year, and she was easy to work with. I’m thrilled with her work. Lana Lee is a very talented illustrator, and I look forward to continuing our partnership.

What educational aspects were important for you to include in this children’s book?

My goal is to educate children about the process of shelter pet adoption and the responsibility involved in caring for a pet. As well as to highlight the rewards and joy pets give us in return. I hope to inspire kindness, compassion, patience, and love toward shelter pets.

What is the next book that you are working on and when will it be available?

We recently completed seven episodes of this series. It has been an incredible experience and an absolute joy to create. I’m currently focusing on using this series to spread the valuable message of shelter pet adoption and hope to expand on Clara & Mr. Milo’s Adventures very soon…

The Love And Support Between Siblings

Ana Cortes Author Interview

Marco, Pablo, & Olivia Volume One follows the Costa sibling’s as they work together to help Marco complete tryouts and make it onto the team. What was the inspiration for the setup to your story?

When brainstorming the idea for Marco, Pablo, & Olivia, I took a lot of inspiration from my trips to Ecuador as a kid. Before we went into lockdown from COVID-19, I used to fly to Ecuador every other year to visit my grandparents and relatives from my dad’s side of the family. I once went to secondary school as a foreign exchange student for a month. Everything in Ecuador is different than what I grew up with in America, but I was fascinated by Ecuador’s beautiful culture. Being there made me realize, “how come no one has made a movie or written a book about Ecuador? There’s so much about Ecuador that’s worth sharing!” That’s when I knew I wanted to write a middle-grade graphic novel series set in Ecuador. Representation matters!

I enjoyed the vibrant art in this book. What was the art illustration process like in bringing this story to life?

After I finished writing the script in 2019, the first thing that came to mind was drawing the illustrations on my computer. I didn’t want to make the comic book using the traditional method of drawing and ink on physical paper. I wanted to make my comic pages on my Huion tablet because it would save me a lot of paper and art supplies, and I always loved digital art. I drew the rough sketches on the tablet, inked the pages, and hired a freelance artist to handle the coloring process. It was challenging to direct a person because I had never hired someone, and I was trying to figure out how I wanted the coloring to look. Plus, I was only 20 years old at that time. Despite the challenging process, I learned that making a comic book requires hard work, effort, and good teamwork. All the diligence was worth bringing my book to life!

What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book series?

When writing the script for the first book, I didn’t think much about the story’s theme. I had so much fun writing it; I didn’t think about what was missing from my book. Once I learned about writing a theme from a creative writing course, I knew I had to think about the message for Futbol Tryouts, even if it’s only 41 pages long. I reread the script and couldn’t figure out the theme, so I gave the script to my dad and aunt for feedback. My aunt explained that the book already had a clear theme about perseverance and that I was overthinking it. Since Fútbol tryouts was the first book, I knew I had to write about universal themes in each book, but I also wanted the central theme for the entire series, which was the love and support between siblings.

What can readers expect in volume two of your children’s book series?

In Fútbol Tryouts, the readers learn that the Costa siblings moved to Guayaquil from Loja. The readers get to see the Costa’s new life on the coast, but they haven’t seen their previous life in the mountains of Ecuador. The next book for Marco, Pablo, & Olivia will feature the Costa siblings again, but the readers will look into their past life in Loja. It will also feature a new character, and I hope she will warm the reader’s hearts.

Meet the Costa kids…Marco, Pablo, and Olivia are two brothers and a sister who came from the mountains of Ecuador. The three kids grew up in a farmhouse with their parents and very little means. After their dad got a high-paying job, Marco, Pablo, Olivia, and their parents move into the coast for a fresh start.
The Costa sibling’s lives turn into a wild ride when they make new friends, set off on adventures, celebrate traditions, deal with rivals, embark on journeys, and experience things they never thought they could have experienced before.

Marco, Pablo, & Olivia is a crafted book filled with nine stand-alone mini-stories that features the beautiful culture of Ecuador, morality, and magic!

Story One
The Costas: Marco, Pablo, Olivia, and their parents move into their new house in Guayaquil, Ecuador. As the three siblings explore their new neighborhood, Marco discovers there is a tryout for a soccer team. Marco is eager to try out, and Pablo and Olivia are there to cheer for him. But Marco will have to face a prejudiced teenager named, Víctor, who is also trying out for the team.

Gloppy

Eleven-year-old Dee Lanson has just begun her last year of elementary school. Greeting the new year, Dee looks forward to spending time with her friends and friendly sports competitions between the boys and girls of the fifth grade. But when new girl Samantha seems to be spending more time with Dee’s closest friends, Sue and Ronnie, than she is, Dee begins to feel the deadly stirrings of jealousy deep within her heart. Finding the perfect opportunity to vent her frustrations, Dee takes it upon herself to teach Samantha a lesson she’ll never forget. But when events spiral out of control, Dee finds that there is much more to her rival than she ever thought possible. With the guidance of teacher Ms. Hersh, school counselor Mr. Kent, and Dee’s parents, Dee and Samantha both learn more about each other and themselves as they work towards a solution to solve a problem that can only be described as “gloppy.”

A wonderful slice-of-life story that covers the last year of elementary school, Dee’s coming-of-age adventure is a lighthearted tale that explores the host of new emotions that come with being eleven. Although Dee and Samantha are the indisputable stars of the show, there is also a rich supporting cast of fellow students and teachers. I liked the vibrant personalities of the students, ranging from stalwart Sue to practical joker Pete. I also liked the interactions between Dee’s parents and the fact that there was more to Ms. Hersh than met the eye. Dee is easy to identify with, as she struggles to understand the complex emotions roiling within her. The only detraction I really had was that I wish Dee was a little nicer to her kid brother, but arguments between siblings are normal, and their parents were good mediators.

A tale of friendship and solving problems brought on by overwrought emotions, Gloppy by Janice Laakko is a lighthearted journey through the fifth grade. Gloppy has a joyful tone, excellent storytelling, and a satisfying conclusion, and it’s the perfect choice for readers eight and above who love a solid school-year adventure full of discovery, mischief, and fun.

A Fun-filled Fantasy

Barbara Reyelts Author Interview

Winston’s Big Wind is a children’s story following a little boy who learned to embrace his intestinal issues and becomes a hero in the process. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

My five grandchildren—none of them can stop themselves from laughing when someone passes gas.  I constantly remind my grandkids that flatulence isn’t polite but when they were little, they told me they couldn’t help it.  As they got older, they learned to control their intestinal gas but they still thought ‘farts’ were funny!  So, I decided to write a story about a little boy who really couldn’t control his gas but who eventually was able to turn his big wind into a big win.

The art in this book is charming. What was the art collaboration process like with illustrator Sarah Gledhill?

My publisher, Atmosphere Press, connected me with Sarah Gledhill in Great Britain.  I emailed her a copy of the manuscript and talked with her about the pictures I had in my head for the characters and the actions.   Winston was designed after my red-headed, fun-filled grandson, and the little girl in the pit was designed after my one and only, at this point, three-year old granddaughter.  Without ever seeing my little ones, Sarah created them incredibly like my descriptions.  She was a joy to work with and is so talented.  We still keep in touch in case Windy Winston rides again!

This seemed like a fun book to write. What scene in the book did you have the most fun creating?

I had a lot of fun writing this book.  Coming up with synonyms for flatulence was a gas and creating alliteration was a fun-filled fantasy!  My favorite scene is the little girl in the pit when Winston is holding the girl and her puppy in his arms.  I like this scene because Sarah’s illustration looks so much like my grandson holding his little sister.  I find it charming and I think child readers would like the idea of a little boy rescuing a little girl while also saving her puppy.

What is the next book that you are working on and when will it be available?

I am working on two very different books right now.  I plan to write a sequel to Winston’s Big Wind now that he is a hero.  Winston loves helping others and since he can’t seem to stop his flatulence, he wants to use his gas for good!  First, however, he has to learn how to control the gaseous gusts so that they come at propitious times.  At the same time, I’m working on a sequel to my novel Dying to LiveDying to Live is about a baby who is born with a full recollection of her past life as a Nobel Laureate medical scientist. During her new life she builds on her past medical advances combining new knowledge with her past excellence.  Her cure for cancer wins her another Nobel Prize.  In the new novel she will be born anew with two past lives’ worth of scientific knowledge.  I’m still working on the research for this novel in which my protagonist will be born to a family living in a scientific enclave on the moon.

Winston was the perfect baby…except for one little thing. His parents hoped he’d grow out of it, but he never quite did.

Winston was a breezy baby who became a tooty tot, and finally…a very gassy guy.

When he started school, his tremendous toots echoed through the classrooms and hallways. On the playground, his gusts of gas could be heard for miles in every direction. Though the other children and teachers came to love Winston for his kindness and sense of humor, they still called him ‘Windy Winston.’ For years he was full of embarrassment and shame over his flatulence faux pas—but one day, things changed for Winston.

Winston’s Big Wind is the story of how one little boy learned to embrace his intestinal issues and turn his wind into a win!

Josephine’s First Day of School – Book Trailer

Being the new kid in town can be challenging in many ways: Especially when you’re a little different. Let’s face it, kids can be, well . . . not so nice. In this book for young readers, Josephine’s character serves as a beautiful example for both kids and adults, and reminds us that no one should ever Judge a book by its cover.
