Tap Your Emotions & Write Sincerely

Pablo Zaragoza Author Interview
Susan Giffin Author Interview

Matson’s Case No.2 follows a detective leading the investigation of five complex murder cases who discovers a government coverup operation in the process. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

Reading about Operation Paper Clip and how the United States government brought many German scientists, Nazi intelligence officers, and members of death camp personnel here. This open door policy also was extended to members of Unit 731, the Imperial Japanese Army’s biological weapons unit. I used my character, Robert Matson, to peel back the layers of this onion. In the process, Matson reveals how the Agriculture Lab off the coast of Lyme, Connecticut, became the epicenter for Lyme’s disease and other infectious diseases that have been diagnosed in this area. Members of the U. S. Senate were informed about the tick colony at this facility and how the insects had escaped, but they took no action. Lab leaks do not happen only in China.

With so many emotionally impactful scenes in your book, what was your hardest scene to write and why?

The death of Bumpy Johnson was hard to write, because I wanted to open with an event that was significant for Matson because Bumpy, although a criminal, had been helpful in starting Matson’s career on the police force. I wanted to make sure that the scene was very accurate in terms of location, who was there, and what Matson’s emotions as he saw his friend die in front of him. It also reminded me of witnessing my first death and how I felt seeing a patient alive only a few hours earlier and then at autopsy.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Write about things that move you. Don’t think about financial gain, because if that is your primary focus, you will never write anything worthwhile. Tap your emotions. Write sincerely about your at experiences: the loss of a loved one, the birth of a child, the anger at being betrayed, the fear when facing danger. Be a good observer of life. Describe people, places, and objects. Put the reader in those places. Think about what would make you turn the page.

What types of questions do you ask yourself when planning a new book?

What is your interest in the particular story you want to tell? Who are your characters? Who are they before they show up in your story? Each character has a life. He or she breathes, eats, loves, and hates. How do you write these things so that your reader will find your story worthwhile to read? While I do not outline a story in advance of writing it, many writers prefer to do that. Whatever works best for you. I also have no idea how many pages I will need to write to tell my story. I let my characters dictate what happened, where they’re going, and what happens next and in the long run. Do not keep writing after you finish telling your story just to add more pages. It’s not the length of a book that counts; it’s the quality of the writing on whatever pages it takes to tell the story.

What are you in the middle of writing now?

I am writing a series about a family during the Spanish Reconquista from about 1230 to 1492. This three-part historical novel deals with the politics, intrigue, war, family life, and heartaches of noblemen and women trying to survive.

Matson’s forensic boss, O’Neal, a crusty Scotsman, sends Matson to the crime scene in Manhattan, where he learns that three men, all with the same name, are murder victims, suspiciously in a three-block radius of each other. He hooks up with his former partner, Harvey Smith, and the two cops plug into the world of spies, Nazis, and Operation Paperclip.
In their investigation into the three murders, all revealing ties with Hitler, the two cops go to the FDA’s animal research facility, site of the three murdered men’s work on biological warfare off Lyme, Connecticut, namesake for Lyme disease.
Who murdered whom becomes a twisted riddle of love and covert operations—and protection of government secrets. Will the truth ever be known? Matson and Smith, in their search for the answer, venture off to the FDA’s Animal research facility, site of the three Nazi scientists’ work on bacteriological warfare off Lyme, Connecticut.
In the familiar sub-plot to the Matson series, he continues to advance in the police ranks, despite ongoing discrimination during the pre-Civil Rights era of the late 1950s. Sissy, Matson’s wife, begins her education in earnest toward becoming a highly respected psychologist.

Love at Hailey’s Comet

Love at Hailey’s Comet (An Alex Yates Story), by Kimberly A. Biggerstaff, is a romantic suspense novella that weaves together elements of romance, mystery, and military intrigue. The story centers on Alexandra Yates, an agent for the Air Force Office of Special Investigations stationed at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida. The narrative kicks off with a film crew producing a movie based on one of her past cases, with Alex unexpectedly cast in the lead role. Jack Hailey, the head of the production company, shares a brief yet tumultuous relationship with Alex, which resurfaces when an airman dies on set, prompting Alex to investigate. Was it merely an accident, or is there a darker truth lurking?

The suspenseful aspect of the novella is gripping. From the moment Alex begins her investigation, the plot pulls you in, offering a blend of twists and turns that keep you engaged. The initial twist introduces an intriguing complexity, intertwining Alex’s unresolved issues with Jack with the unfolding mystery. The clues scattered throughout allow for some speculation, but the unexpected developments maintain the story’s momentum, keeping the reader invested until the final reveal. Even though the novella connects to a larger series, it stands on its own, making it accessible to new readers.

The initial pacing feels somewhat uneven in places. I believe the provision of the characters’ backstory, though informative, took away from the anticipated main action in the story. I would love to have seen the story begin with Alex diving into the investigation with her history with Jack gradually woven throughout the plot.

Love at Hailey’s Comet remains an enjoyable read, particularly for fans of romantic suspense and military romance genres. Its blend of romance, mystery, and military life offers a unique take on the genre, making it a worthwhile addition to your reading list.

The Camaro Murders

In The Camaro Murders, Ian Lewis crafts a compelling narrative centered around a murder in a small town, told from four distinct perspectives, including one from beyond the grave. The driver of the Camaro, a man straddling the line between the living and the dead, is tasked with gathering murdered souls. As he navigates this eerie realm, he uncovers the identity of a young girl’s killer, who poses an imminent threat. Faced with a moral dilemma, he must choose between following his orders and saving a boy’s life by intervening.

Lewis excels in creating an otherworldly atmosphere while grounding his characters in relatable human experiences. Each perspective is uniquely rendered, with narratives in the first person that are well-crafted and thoughtfully developed. The multi-faceted storytelling draws readers deeper into the plot, making it a gripping read from start to finish. The book’s non-linear timeline, which shifts back and forth, enhances the plot’s complexity and intrigue. This narrative technique adds depth to the story, making it more engaging as the reader progresses. The careful construction of these shifts in time demonstrates Lewis’s skill in maintaining a coherent and compelling storyline.

Notably, The Camaro Murders is a clean read, devoid of lingering graphic violence. Lewis’s sensitivity in handling violent themes with caution and restraint is commendable, ensuring that the story remains impactful without unnecessary gore. This thoughtful approach allows the reader to focus on the emotional and psychological aspects of the narrative.

The Camaro Murders is an excellent read, earning a solid four out of five stars. Ian Lewis’s experimental technique as a writer complements the plotline effectively, making the book a standout in its genre. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a thought-provoking and engaging read with a unique narrative structure.

Matson’s Case No. 2

Matson’s Case No.2 by Pablo Omar Zaragoza and Susan Giffin takes readers on a riveting journey back to one of Matson’s most challenging cases under the supervision of O’Neal. The narrative centers around a complex investigation involving five murder victims: three former Nazis and a Jewish couple. Matson’s dogged determination and unconventional approach lead him to unravel the intricate web behind the murders, transcending the limitations of the evidence at hand. Set in the 1950s New York City, this mystery novel delves deep into the dark underbelly of governmental corruption. Matson finds himself not only battling the perpetrators but also navigating the treacherous waters of US government machinations. The government, eager to conceal its dealings with the deceased Nazis, tries to obstruct Matson’s investigation. However, Matson’s resolve and intellect prove superior, allowing him to outmaneuver the authorities and reveal the uncomfortable truths they sought to hide.

The book’s core lies in its critique of the US government’s moral decay, showcasing how war criminals were protected and even employed despite their heinous pasts. The government’s ruthless tactics to silence those who might expose its secrets, including the murder of the former Nazis contemplating surrender, form a central theme. Matson’s Case No.2 is a quintessential mystery, marked by the pursuit of justice for the five victims. Zaragoza and Giffin masterfully incorporate translated German phrases, enhancing the authenticity and immersive experience of the story. The narrative’s strength lies in its ability to take readers on an emotional roller coaster, with Matson uncovering crucial information only to face numerous setbacks. The portrayal of racial issues feels somewhat underdeveloped. Given the era’s prevalent racism, I expected these challenges to play a more significant role in Matson’s professional life, beyond the occasional hurtful comment. This aspect could have added another layer of realism and conflict to the narrative.

Matson’s Case No.2 is a gripping and thought-provoking read, perfect for fans of historical mysteries and those interested in the ethical complexities of post-war politics. Zaragoza and Giffin’s storytelling prowess ensures an engaging experience. This book is ideal for readers who appreciate a well-researched mystery that challenges the reader to think beyond the surface of the crime.

An Everyday Hero

Andrea Barton Author Interview

The Godfather of Dance follows a determined new journalist who is eager to write a career-defining article and solve the unsolved murder of her dance instructor’s fiancée. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

My inspiration was derived from a few elements. Jade, my protagonist, evolved over time. I wrote about her in several books that weren’t published before she finally took shape in The Godfather of Dance. Initially, she was older, married, with kids, but for this story, it made more sense for her to be younger. Among other things, as an unmarried woman, she had the opportunity to develop a will-they-won’t-they romance with Anton.

The setting came from the five years I spent living in The Woodlands, Texas. This planned community is so picture-perfect it just begged for an underbelly as a counterpoint.

Anton’s character was inspired by my dance instructor in Houston, although once he hit the page, he took on a life of his own and became a wonderfully flawed character who’d grown up in a crime family. Right from the first drafts, I knew he was in hiding from his father, who he suspected of killing his fiancée.

Jade Riley is a woman with strength and intelligence. What do you think makes her a valuable and worthy heroine?

I wanted to create an everyday hero who did things for the most part that any regular person could do. I don’t have a background in the police or FBI, so I couldn’t write such a character as convincingly as someone who has. I didn’t give Jade amazing ‘superhero’ strengths, although she takes chances that are probably beyond most people’s capacity for risk-taking. Her value comes from her determination, courage, and intellect.

What was the hardest part about writing a mystery story, where you constantly have to give just enough to keep the mystery alive until the big reveal?

Writing a mystery is a bit like a jigsaw puzzle. As the author, you know where all the pieces are—at least you figure them out along the way—but deciding when and how to reveal each new piece of information to the reader is the challenge. Once I have the story down, I move the chapters around to figure out how to maximize the drama. Often, I move reveals to later in the story to maintain the tension.

On the other hand, I’m always careful not to hold back too much, as I like the idea of readers having the chance to figure it out, or to be able to look back and see something in the story that in hindsight makes everything that follows make sense.

Can you tell us more about what’s in store for Jade Riley and the direction of the second book?

Book two, A Killer Among Friends, is out in December.

Journalist Jade returns from abroad to her hometown, Melbourne. Soon after, her friend Nick is found dead in a dumpster. She turns to their tight-knit circle for answers, only to uncover a web of lies.

Mounting evidence suggests her best friend Elena’s suicide three years earlier is connected. Was she, too, murdered?

As Jade closes in on the killer, she realizes the suspects are all people she loves. Her life depends on knowing which of them to trust.

The Real King of Miami

Eric Sande’s The Real King of Miami offers a gripping dive into the world of crime through the eyes of Ray “Li’l Ray” Thompson, who recounts his story from Death Row at Zephyrhills Correctional Institution in Pasco County, Florida. This true crime novel stands out for its unique perspective, as it is largely based on interviews between the author and Thompson. Instead of an analytical recounting of facts, Sande delivers a narrative that reads like an intense thriller akin to Scarface or Narcos.

The prologue hooks readers immediately with the climactic murder of Jimmy Savoy, one of Ray’s employees who had betrayed him by stealing a substantial amount of money. From there, the narrative rewinds to delve into the author’s fascination with Li’l Ray, setting the stage for an in-depth exploration of Ray’s operations in the marijuana smuggling world. The story, though dense with characters, ultimately centers on the critical event aboard the boat where Jimmy was killed. This book is not for the faint of heart. Its pages are laden with expletives, adding a raw and authentic feel to the storytelling. For readers who can overlook the language, these elements contribute significantly to the book’s realism and immersive quality. The narrative is so compelling that many readers might find themselves finishing the book in one sitting.

The Real King of Miami is a must-read for true crime enthusiasts looking to break away from dry, report-like accounts. Sande’s book offers a shorter yet equally hard-hitting experience, making it a standout addition to any true crime fan’s reading list.

Sunscreen Shower

Book Review

Sunscreen Shower, by J. Paul Rieger, weaves together multiple interconnected storylines, centering on Kev Dixit, a dedicated Baltimore police detective investigating the enigmatic case of the Matthiesens’ alleged murder-suicide. Running parallel to Kev’s investigation is the story of Klos, a man consumed by a quest for revenge, navigating a journey filled with anger, pain, and potential redemption. Adding a contrasting narrative are two writers, Chris and Alan, who face significant challenges in bringing their innovative ideas to life.

Rieger’s exploration of human nature and the unintended consequences of our actions is both profound and thought-provoking. Themes of justice and morality are intricately woven throughout the interconnected stories, providing a rich tapestry of narrative depth. The author skillfully alternates between intense, fast-paced action scenes and slower, more introspective moments, transitioning seamlessly from the chaos of a violent armed robbery to the poignant grief of a man mourning his father. This balance keeps the reader engaged and invested in the unfolding drama. Rieger ensures that cases are solved through meticulous police investigations rather than fortuitous breaks, adding a layer of authenticity to the story. This attention to detail makes the narrative feel genuine and engaging, particularly for fans of police procedurals.

Sunscreen Shower ambitiously weaves numerous smaller narratives within its main plot; this approach offers a variety of perspectives and rich storylines. Each subplot brings its unique flavor to the overall narrative, contributing to the book’s intricate tapestry. Although I feel some storylines might benefit from a little more development, they add to the book’s overall sense of complexity and intrigue. Readers will find themselves mesmerized by the diverse cast of characters, each bringing their own motivations and actions to the forefront.

Sunscreen Shower remains an interesting read, particularly for those who enjoy suspense novels and police procedurals. The book offers a unique blend of intense action and emotional introspection, making it a worthwhile addition to the genre.
