The way the authors described the grandfather clock ticking and the stillness in the room, I could practically feel the dust and grief hanging in the air. And when Aunt Charlotte explains she cannot take him in, Daniel quietly responds, “It’s okay. I can make do.” That line struck me deeply. It’s a simple statement, yet it speaks volumes about his resilience and the stark reality of the world he now faces. I had to pause reading just to absorb the weight of it.
What really carried the heart of the story for me was the relationship between Daniel and Mr. Kline. Their connection builds slowly, organically, through shared grief and quiet generosity. There’s a moment where Christian helps Daniel break his five-dollar bill into smaller change just to keep him safe. He does it gently and respectfully like a father would. Later, when Christian offers Daniel a ride and eventually a place to stay and a shot at apprenticing with a blacksmith, I honestly teared up. These weren’t grand acts of heroism, they were small, deeply human choices, and they mattered so much more because of it. It’s not often a story lets two people, from totally different worlds, find healing in each other like this.
Stylistically, the book is folksy and rich, with a soft kind of poetry laced through the everyday grit. I loved how the characters spoke; their voices felt true to the time and place without ever becoming stiff or forced. The Irish lilt in Daniel’s dialogue, especially when he talks about his grandda or says things like “I canny imagine,” adds charm and warmth to the heavy themes. One of my favorite scenes is when he wakes up in a barn after a vivid dream of the “Gypsy King” saving him from wolves, a dream that becomes a beautiful metaphor for his inner strength and his need for protection. That moment hit like a folk tale, mythic and intimate all at once.
By the end, I didn’t want to leave Daniel. His pain is real, but so is his resilience. I finished the last chapter with a lump in my throat and this sense of quiet hope. This story doesn’t pretend that everything is okay; it shows you how people can help each other carry the weight of things, even when the load doesn’t get any lighter.
I’d recommend The Gypsy King: A Christmas Story to anyone who loves historical fiction with soul, especially readers who appreciate stories about chosen family, loss, and the slow rebuilding of a life. It’s perfect for fans of Little Britches, Sarah, Plain, and Tall, or even Anne of Green Gables, but with a grittier edge. This isn’t a holiday story full of tinsel and cheer, but it is one filled with grace, faith, and the kind of quiet miracles that come with kindness. It’s a gift of a book and I’m glad I opened it.

Rage Against the Machine is the kind of novel that grabs you by the collar and doesn’t let go. It’s book one in the Given Path Trilogy, and it kicks things off with serious momentum. We follow Roare Murdock-Galloway, a celebrated filmmaker with a complicated past, as she gets pulled deeper into a world that blends faith, science fiction, and real-world tech anxiety. There’s an eerie urgency to the themes, AI, transhumanism, spiritual warfare, and the plot weaves personal trauma with a global threat. It’s got action, heart, and a lot of soul.
The author’s writing style is rich, vivid, and surprisingly intimate. The dialogue feels raw, like you’re eavesdropping on real people grappling with pain and purpose. The opening chapter throws you into Roare’s world, a tense TV interview where she’s trying to hold her ground against a nosy host, and right away, you feel her vulnerability. That scene where she storms off the set (and then curls into her husband’s arms afterward) really hit me. It showed her strength and her limits, and I appreciated that balance. She’s not perfect.
The spiritual thread in this book isn’t subtle; it’s front and center, but it’s not preachy. That’s a rare balance. Roare’s faith journey is full of doubt, frustration, and flashes of divine connection. Her therapy session with Dr. Galletti, where she breaks down over her past and her father, was beautifully written and emotionally brutal. I loved how scripture was organically folded into conversations and it didn’t feel forced, just part of the characters’ world.
And then there’s the sci-fi twist. It sneaks up on you. The transition from personal healing to global intrigue is seamless. I actually got chills when Roare discovered the note referencing Dr. Stanley Monteith and started down the rabbit hole of transhumanism. It’s wild but grounded enough to feel plausible. That’s what makes it creepy, in a good way.
I’d recommend Rage Against the Machine to anyone who likes thrillers with a pulse and a purpose. It’s perfect for readers who enjoy Christian fiction but want something bolder, darker, and more urgent. If you’ve ever asked big questions about faith, technology, or the direction our world is headed, this one’s for you.

He Created the Land of Oz
A Hundred Magical Reasons follows two women from different eras who meet by chance and bond over the story The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its creator, L. Frank Baum and wind up on a journey together for solace, inspiration, and purpose. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?
After reading a biography of L. Frank Baum, I was smitten. He was an innovative, larger-than-life personality—which is no surprise, given that he created the Land of Oz.
Baum was also a family man with a keen understanding of children and a high regard for women. His mother-in-law was a suffragist! His humor, unstoppable imagination, and tenacity gave him the capacity to bounce back from failure many times.
Fun fact: Baum and his family summered at the same lake where my family vacations yearly near Holland, Michigan. Though we were at opposite ends of Lake Macatawa—and opposite ends of the century—this sparked additional interest in his life. Thus, my novel focuses on the summers he spent at Macatawa (1900-1909).
My story spotlights a young girl, Janie, whose pious parents have no use for fun, frivolity, fairies, fantasy, or fiction. Then Janie meets L. Frank Baum. This tension was the premise for the novel.
Your book has some very interesting characters that have their character flaws but are still likable. How do you go about creating characters for your story?
Baum’s life, family, and career ups and downs shaped the story. I wanted my two protagonists, Janie (in both timelines) and Carrie (1980), to be impacted by his influence. I just had to figure out how. I wanted to spotlight the Baums’ summers at Michigan’s Macatawa Resort and his friendship with young Janie (AKA Charlotte). Janie takes on challenges inspired by some of Baum’s career choices.
I wanted young Janie to be bright and imaginative, despite having harsh parents. L. Frank Baum’s role was drawing out more of Janie’s imagination, giving her the courage to chase her dreams.
However, decades later in 1980, when Mrs. Gordon (Janie all grown up) hires college-age Carrie, she’s a bitter, critical, and cynical old woman. The question is why. I needed Carrie’s life to have parallels to Mrs. Gordon’s earlier challenges and goals.
Carrie wants to run a literary-themed café against her parents’ wishes. So, like young Janie, Carrie struggles against their demands, criticism, and expectations. Additionally, she’s been dating parent-approved Brian for six years and he’s about ready to pop the question. Then she meets Dirk . . .
The most challenging part of this story was capturing L. Frank Baum’s personality. I did a ton of research so I could learn as much as possible about him and the early 1900s, and stay true to the facts. But my purpose went beyond knowing the facts and events of his life. This was about creating his essence on the page so readers can experience what it was like to be with him—whether running a printing press or sipping lemonade together on his Macatawa porch.
What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?
Baum’s stories are all about stirring the child’s imagination, so that’s a key element of my novel. Janie is at odds with her rigid parents—the perfect foil for a man like L. Frank Baum who stretches her imagination in every way possible. I firmly believe everybody is creative in their own way, so I hope this story inspires readers to value and use their own imaginations.
But many themes are woven throughout, such as learning to be yourself when others try to keep you in a box, embracing the role of stories and fairy tales in our lives, plus following your passion and conquering fear with brains, heart, and courage.
With 14 thought-provoking questions at the end, A Hundred Magical Reasons would make a great book club book. I hope the story raises questions and produces some pondering.
What is the next book that you’re working on and when can your fans expect it out?
It’s another dual timeline novel, set in 2015 and the 1950s, hopefully available in 2026. The story involves a family mystery, a literary icon, and two co-workers at cross-purposes for wanting more information—one to share in a biography, and the other to keep it hidden while resolving family issues. Loyalty is tested and secrets abound when family honor collides with truth.
