There’s Always Hope

Before I Go follows a teenage girl dealing with the death of her brother who struggles to heal from this loss and seeks solace at the lake where they used to find joy and laughter. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?
The inspiration for Before I Go came to me during the pandemic, a time when so many people were grappling with the loss of loved ones. In my city, we not only faced the pandemic but also endured a devastating typhoon that brought even more hardship to families. Grief and struggle were everywhere, yet people had to keep moving forward, often without the chance to truly process their feelings.
This got me thinking—what if someone couldn’t move on as quickly as those around them? What if they were still stuck in their grief while the world had already moved forward? That’s where the seed for the story was planted. From there, I leaned into the idea of exploring this through a teen fiction romance, which felt like the right fit to tell this kind of emotional journey.
I wanted to show that there are different ways of coping with loss. Some people have to move on quickly because life demands it, while others need more time. And that’s okay. We all handle grief in our own way, and there’s no right or wrong pace for healing.
In a lot of contemporary coming-of-age fiction novels, authors often add their own life experiences to the story. Are there any bits of you in this story?
There’s a big piece of me in Before I Go. Rory’s likes and dreams mirror my own in many ways. Like her, I’m a huge Harry Potter fan, and I adore Taylor Swift and Harry Styles—both of whom get a nod in the book. I’ve always dreamed of becoming a librarian or at least working in a library, just like Rory. And the little things, like cheap cupcakes from the grocery store, are straight from my life—I even once celebrated a birthday with one as my cake!
On a deeper level, Rory’s emotions are very much a reflection of my own. Harper, in particular, is inspired by my father. He’s the person who makes me laugh so easily and has become a safety net in my life. When he fell into critical condition during the pandemic, I was terribly afraid. I was juggling everything—family responsibilities, work, all while battling COVID myself. It was an incredibly tough time, and looking back, I’m not sure how I managed to keep it all together. Even after everything settled down, I carried this weight in my chest—a fear of what could have happened if I hadn’t stayed strong.
It took me a long time to process those feelings because I had to keep them in, and it wasn’t easy. In writing this story, I created Walker because, in a way, I wanted someone like Walker in my life—a strong, supportive character who could have lifted me out of the darkness I was feeling. So yes, this story holds a big part of my heart.
What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?
The main theme I wanted to express in Before I Go is hope. It’s a simple, common word, but I feel like not everyone gets to truly experience its depth. We often overlook hope, take it for granted, or even forget it entirely. Life can sometimes drown us in fear, pain, anger, and grief, making hope feel distant or unreachable. And that’s not anyone’s fault—we all go through different things and handle them in our own ways.
But even in the midst of all that, I wanted this book to send a clear message: there’s always hope, especially for those who seek it. I pray that those who are struggling can find that thread of hope somewhere, and if they do, I hope they grab onto it and hold tight. Because no matter how tough things get, hope is there, waiting to be found.
What is the next book that you are working on, and when will it be available?
I actually just released a new book called Heart of the Moon Goddess. It’s a retelling of Philippine mythology about the Moon Goddess and the Bakunawa, a sea serpent that wants to devour the moons in the sky. It’s now available on Amazon, and it will be available for printing and distribution soon!
This book is a bit different from my first, but I’ve always been a huge fan of romance and fantasy, so I’m really excited to see what people think of it.
I’m also currently working on another fantasy romance, but I’m keeping the details under wraps for now. Here’s a little clue: there are dragons involved! Who doesn’t love them? Stay tuned!

The Only Thing Stopping You is YOU!
Posted by Literary_Titan

The Long Way Around details your experiences growing up in a Mormon household marked by abuse and addiction and the challenges you have overcome over the course of your life. Why was this an important book for you to write?
Writing requires a clear mind, so I would spend some time meditating before I wrote. Since I was in my late 60’s when I began writing, I had to regress decades to remember some of the events and specifics, and more importantly the feelings associated with the events. I had shared some of my stories briefly with a friend or two and they would say, “You need to write about that”, so I did.
I appreciated the candid nature with which you told your story. What was the hardest thing for you to write about?
As I began writing, I decided that I should focus on the positive nature and write a motivational and inspirational piece that might help others with the challenges of life. As I have said, it took me four years and a bucket of tears to write this book.It was basically facing and dealing with the depression I had experienced over the years.
What is a misconception you believe many people have about growing up in a Mormon household?
Tara Westover wrote “Educated”, a memoir. Whe shares her Mormon story as well. I think that there is a lot of abusive households in every religion and Mormonism is no exception. Typically when I think of organized religion I think of the Sunday teachings of forgiveness and brotherly love that seems only to apply to Sunday. Monday through Saturday those philosophies are forgotten, as well as the ten commandments.
What is one thing you hope readers take away from The Long Way Around?
You can become the person you want to be, just as I have. The only thing stopping you is YOU!
Bruce Lee said the most important thing in life is to know yourself. Meditation is critical to do that!

Living Together Harmoniously
Posted by Literary_Titan
Come Home, Papa Jed! follows a family of bears and woodland creatures working together to search for Papa Jed, who did not return as expected from a fishing trip. What was the inspiration for your story?
The inspiration for Come Home, Papa Jed! came from a memorable experience my husband Joe and I had some time ago. We visited a secluded fly-fishing resort nestled deep in the woods, where we were the only guests for two nights at a beautiful mansion with large, elegantly decorated rooms, including our own, which featured charming black bear-themed decor. While Joe embarked on a day-long fishing excursion with a guide, I decided to explore the estate. Despite my initial apprehension about walking alone in the woods, I was able to release my fears entirely and fully enjoy the experience. I spent hours wandering through the secluded acres and encountered an array of wildlife, one species after another, that seemed to welcome me into their world. As the sun began to set, I had a slightly anxious wait for Joe’s return, and I was so relieved and happy to see him come back safely after his adventure. The entire experience was so enchanting that I documented it for myself with a poem and photos I’d taken that day. That journal entry eventually blossomed into Come Home, Papa Jed!, a sweet tale where woodland creatures join forces to find Papa Jed and bring him safely back to his family.
One of the highlights of your children’s book is how you captured the emotions of the family, both their anxiety and fear and their relief and joy. What was your approach to writing the interactions between characters?
When writing the interactions between the characters, I aimed to capture tender and genuine moments that reflect the natural world around us. I wanted to highlight the emotions of anxiety, fear, relief, and joy in a way that resonates deeply with readers. Observing wildlife, I’ve seen their fierce loyalty, emotions, and the hard work they put into staying together and caring for their young—qualities that mirror the best of our own and that I find deeply moving. In my book, these scenes are crafted to reveal the gentle and cooperative side of nature, emphasizing the beauty and harmony that can exist even among diverse creatures.
What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?
In Come Home, Papa Jed!, I aimed to convey several key ideas. One of the main themes is the beauty of the creatures that inhabit the Smoky Mountains, which I wanted to present through a lens that reflects my deep appreciation for them. Another important idea is the significance of family among animals, which I’ve observed throughout my life. To illustrate peaceful coexistence, I drew inspiration from my observations of the animals that visit my property, which I often watch through one of my security cameras. It’s fascinating to see foxes, skunks, raccoons, and deer all at a short distance from one another, peacefully sharing the same space despite their differences. This concept of living together harmoniously highlights the broader themes of cooperation and unity that I wished to convey in the story. As a gal from Brooklyn, I hope this story and its images reach kids in urban areas similar to where I grew up, giving them a taste of nature’s beauty and perhaps inspiring them to care about animals and visit a place like the Great Smoky Mountains.
Is this the first book in the series? If so, when is the next book coming out, and what can your fans expect in the next story?
Yes, Come Home, Papa Jed! is the first book in my broader series, “Animal Adventures of the Smoky Mountains,” specifically under the subseries title “Bear Adventures in the Smoky Mountains.” Fans can soon expect additional adventures with Jed and his family. Currently in the works are a Thanksgiving adventure and a Christmas quest, with hopes of releasing them in time for the respective seasons. Following the “Bear Adventures,” the series will expand to include other subseries focused on different animal families and their unique stories within the Smokies. I’m eager to hear suggestions from my readers about which animals they’d like to see featured next!

Come Home, Papa Jed: Bear Adventures in the Smoky Mountains
Posted by Literary Titan

Come Home, Papa Jed! is a charming picture book that takes readers on a heartwarming journey through the Smoky Mountains. The story centers on a bear family; Papa Jed, Mama Daisy, and their two cubs, Huck and Lila. When Papa Jed goes fishing and doesn’t return as expected, worry sets in, prompting Mama Daisy and the cubs to venture into the mystical woodlands in search of him. Along the way, they encounter various woodland creatures who, despite not knowing Jed’s whereabouts, offer their help.
The story beautifully captures the anxiety of separation and the relief that comes with reunion. The forest setting, with its detailed and vivid depictions, plays a central role in evoking a sense of wonder and adventure. The idea that the natural world is teeming with life and community is gently woven throughout the story, making it a celebration of the Smoky Mountains’ wildlife and scenery.
The characters in the book, though anthropomorphized, retain their animalistic qualities, adding a layer of authenticity to the story. Mama Daisy is depicted as the caring and determined matriarch, while the cubs, Huck and Lila, embody the innocence and inquisitiveness of youth.
The pacing of the story is steady, with a mix of suspenseful moments as the family searches for Papa Jed, and light-hearted, whimsical encounters with other animals. The narrative builds tension effectively, making the final reunion all the more satisfying.
Victoria Winifred’s use of literary devices such as rhyme and repetition adds to the lyrical quality of the text. The chorus of animals calling for Papa Jed is a particularly powerful moment, both visually and emotionally. The recurring theme of community support is reinforced through the animals’ collective efforts to help the bear family, creating a heartwarming message of unity.
Winifred’s writing style is evocative and tender, perfectly suited for a children’s picture book. The fantastic artwork transports readers into the heart of the wilderness. The dialogue between the animals is both charming and clever, adding a touch of humor that will delight young readers.
One aspect of the book that stands out is its ability to blend a simple narrative with a deeper emotional resonance. The anxiety of the cubs and Mama Daisy is palpable, and their relief at finding Papa Jed is equally powerful. Winifred skillfully balances these emotions, ensuring the story remains accessible to children while also engaging adult readers.
Come Home, Papa Jed! is a delightful read for young children and their families. The story’s blend of adventure, emotion, and the celebration of nature makes it a perfect bedtime read. I would highly recommend this children’s book to parents, educators, and anyone looking for a beautifully illustrated and well-crafted story.

You Are SO Loved: Unfailing, Faithful Love
Posted by Literary Titan

You Are SO Loved, by Natalie James, is a beautifully written and illustrated children’s book that gently reminds readers of God’s unconditional love surrounding them. Through tender words and vibrant illustrations, the book delivers a heartfelt message of God’s love, belonging, and self-worth, making it a perfect read for young children who need reassurance and comfort. The book emphasizes the importance of feeling loved by God and encourages readers to embrace their unique qualities and the love that exists in their lives.
One of the standout features of James’ story is the simplicity and warmth of the writing. Natalie James has a way of conveying deep emotions in a way that is accessible and soothing for children. The repetition of the phrase “Do you know how much God loves you?” throughout the book reinforces the central message and makes it stick with the reader long after the book is closed. This repetitive structure, combined with the gentle tone, creates a comforting rhythm that feels almost like a lullaby. The illustrations are another highlight of the book.
Each page is filled with bright, cheerful colors that capture the attention of young readers and complement the text beautifully. The imagery is simple yet powerful, featuring diverse characters and scenes that reflect the universal nature of the book’s message. The combination of soft, flowing lines and vibrant hues helps to create a warm and inviting atmosphere that draws readers in and makes them feel safe and loved.
Another aspect of the book that I particularly appreciated is its emphasis on not only loving God but to love everyone. This is an important concept for children to learn early on, and the book does an excellent job of conveying this message.
You Are SO Loved is a tender and reassuring book that would be a wonderful addition to any child’s library. Its simple yet profound message, combined with its beautiful illustrations, makes it a perfect choice for bedtime reading or for any time a child needs a little extra comfort and reassurance. I would recommend this book to parents who are looking for a way to remind children of the love that surrounds them and the importance of self-love.

A Father’s Love
Posted by Literary Titan

A Father’s Love, by Alicia Smith, is a heartwarming story that beautifully captures the bond between a father and his daughter, Rachelle. The narrative follows little Rachelle as she enjoys a day of fun and adventure with her biggest hero—her dad. From playful outings at the playground to indulging in sweet treats, Rachelle’s day is filled with joy. However, as evening approaches, she begins to feel nervous about her upcoming ballet performance. With her father’s unwavering love and support, Rachelle must summon the courage to face her fears and step onto the stage for the first time in front of a large audience. The question lingers: Will Rachelle find the confidence to shine, or will her doubts hold her back?
This tender story is a touching portrayal of a father’s supportive role in his child’s life. I was particularly moved by how the father instinctively knew when to let Rachelle take charge and when to offer reassurance. The narrative seamlessly illustrates the powerful connection between love, support, and self-confidence. The gentle pacing of the story, coupled with Olivia Smith H.’s lovely illustrations, enhances the emotional depth of the tale. Each page is brought to life with soft, vibrant colors that add another layer of warmth and charm to the book.
A Father’s Love is as sweet as summer strawberries—a delightful read for all ages. The story’s message of love and support is perfectly conveyed, making it a comforting and uplifting choice. It’s a beautiful depiction of gentle parental guidance and familial love, leading to a conclusion that leaves the reader feeling cherished and embraced. This exceptional collaboration between author and illustrator has created a book that resonates deeply, and I eagerly look forward to more from this talented duo. Alicia Smith’s engaging tale makes a wonderful addition to a family library.
