How Societies Evolve Under Extreme Conditions
Posted by Literary_Titan

The Worlds of Origin explores 900,000 years of galactic history and takes readers on a journey through millennia of lore, from the rise and fall of the mighty Galactic Empire to the birth of the Origin Worlds and the looming apocalyptic event known as the Desolation.
What was the inspiration for the culture of your characters? Is it modeled after any particular society?
The culture of my characters draws inspiration from a mix of historical and imagined societies. While not modeled directly after any single culture, I was influenced by the complexity of real-world empires, like the Roman Empire or ancient China, where power was divided between ruling classes, religious institutions, and complex bureaucracies. I wanted to explore how societies evolve under extreme conditions, like the control of interstellar travel or the threat of a recurring catastrophe. Elements of hierarchy, ritual, and political intrigue found in various ancient civilizations shaped the worlds in my book, while the mysterious forces and long-lost knowledge gave me the freedom to craft something otherworldly. It’s a blend of familiar structures with a futuristic, fantastical twist.
Is this the first book in the series? If so, when is the next book coming out and what can your fans expect in the next story?
While the ending of my book may suggest the possibility of a continuation, I actually wrote it as a standalone story. The conclusion is meant to allow readers to imagine how things might play out beyond the final chapter. While it’s possible that I may write a sequel in the future, I don’t have a set timeline for it. For now, the story stands on its own, and I’m excited for readers to interpret the ending in their own way.

On a remote world, the residents practice a form of magic that seems to defy the laws of science. But as the truth about this magic is revealed, it becomes clear that it’s part of an ancient plan to fight a relentless Enemy. With every twist, the boundaries between science and fantasy blur, challenging the crew’s understanding of reality. As secrets unravel, loyalties are tested, and the fate of the Galaxy hangs in the balance.
Spanning 900,000 years, this epic tale chronicles the rise and fall of the Galactic Empire, from the mysterious creation of the Origin Worlds to the devastating Desolation.
Excerpts from the Encyclopaedia Galactica
Origin Worlds (Galactic Term)
The Origin Worlds refer to four ancient planets, each containing portals that allow for instantaneous travel between them. Predating all known civilizations, these worlds are now controlled by the galaxy’s most powerful empires. Their true nature and purpose remain a mystery despite extensive study. Theories range from them being the key to the galaxy’s creation to remnants of a lost civilization. Highly coveted, the Origin Worlds are central to political and military power.
For other uses, see disambiguation.
Desolation (Galactic Phenomenon)
The Desolation is an enigmatic, galaxy-wide catastrophe that has erased entire civilizations from existence, leaving behind only barren, lifeless worlds known as Desolation Worlds. Little is known about the true cause or nature of the event, but it is marked by sudden and widespread destruction, often with no survivors or clear signs of conflict. The Desolation is mentioned in various ancient texts and prophecies, alluding to a powerful force beyond understanding. Its origins remain one of the galaxy’s greatest mysteries, with many believing it to be an inevitable fate awaiting all advanced civilizations.

The Worlds of Origin
Posted by Literary Titan

The Worlds of Origin by D. Dan Becheru is an ambitious and captivating debut novel that blends epic science fiction with elements of fantasy. Spanning a staggering 900,000 years of galactic history, this sweeping tale takes readers on a journey through millennia of lore, from the rise and fall of the mighty Galactic Empire to the birth of the Origin Worlds and the looming apocalyptic event known as the Desolation.
While the sheer scope of the novel might sound overwhelming, that’s part of what makes The Worlds of Origin such a unique and compelling read. Set in a galaxy where faster-than-light (FTL) travel is tightly controlled by a powerful Church, and political power is divided among vast empires, the story unfolds through multiple narratives, each with its own intricate web of events. The overarching conflict centers on those fighting to save the galaxy from destruction and others determined to see the Desolation, an ancient and devastating prophecy, fulfilled.
Given the novel’s immense time span and complexity, Becheru wisely structures the story as a series of interwoven narratives, almost like short stories, that contribute to the broader, overarching plot. This approach not only makes the massive timeline more digestible but also keeps the reader engaged with the twists and turns that define each storyline. What could easily have been overwhelming is instead an engrossing, multifaceted epic that feels approachable without losing its depth.
The world-building in The Worlds of Origin is nothing short of extraordinary. Becheru has created a vast, intricately detailed galaxy that feels both lived-in and expansive, full of history, conflict, and wonder. What’s even more impressive is how seamlessly this rich lore is introduced. There are no overwhelming exposition dumps. Instead, the world-building is woven organically into the story, offering just enough information to keep readers immersed without bogging them down in unnecessary detail.
Character development is another highlight of the novel. Becheru sidesteps traditional sci-fi clichés, giving his characters depth and complexity. Many of the key players have their own hidden agendas, which keeps the reader on edge. Trust is a rare commodity in this galaxy, and betrayals lurk around every corner. This uncertainty adds an extra layer of tension and excitement, as the twists in relationships often come as a genuine surprise.
While the storytelling and world-building are top-tier, I felt that the prose can feel uneven at times, and some of the dialogue comes across as a bit stiff. For readers who prioritize story and immersion over technical perfection, this won’t detract much from the overall experience.
The Worlds of Origin is a remarkable achievement. Whether you’re a seasoned sci-fi reader or new to the genre, this novel’s blend of epic action, intricate political intrigue, and thought-provoking philosophy offers an engaging and rewarding experience.

Worldmaker of Yand-Yildun
Posted by Literary Titan

Worldmaker of Yand-Yildun by Andri E. Elia takes us to the planet Yand, orbiting the star Yildun, where Yanara, a powerful spellcaster known as the Worldmaker, must defend her world from the menacing K’tul, an intergalactic invader. The story intricately weaves themes of love, loss, and the responsibilities that come with immense power, all while introducing a rich cast of characters, including Yanara’s daughter, who is just beginning to manifest her own inherited abilities. As threats loom, Yanara is not only challenged by external forces but also by the complexities of her personal life, especially her relationships and her desire to protect her family.
From the start, I was struck by the depth of Yanara’s character and her multifaceted nature. She is powerful, yet vulnerable, particularly when it comes to her family. The narrative begins with a rich backstory, laying a solid foundation for the events that unfold. I found the early exploration of Yanara’s internal struggles compelling, especially her reflections on her marriages and her longing to start a family. These personal conflicts made Yanara relatable despite her extraordinary abilities, and they added a layer of emotional depth to the story. The planet Yand, with its empathic, winged humanoids and their intricate societal norms, is vividly depicted. I particularly enjoyed the scenes that highlighted the contrast between Yanara’s immense power and the everyday struggles of life on Yand. The descriptions of the landscape, the technology, and the unique cultural elements of the Yandar people were immersive, drawing me deeper into this fantastical world. The illustrations, particularly those by Lily Dormishev, beautifully complement the narrative, capturing the essence of Yand’s unique environment and its inhabitants.
Elia’s writing is both evocative and engaging. It has moments of intense action balanced by introspective passages. I appreciated the seamless blend of science fiction and fantasy elements which kept the story unpredictable and fresh. The inclusion of LGBTQIA+ themes, particularly in the depiction of Yanara’s relationships, felt natural and added a contemporary touch to the classic hero’s journey.
Worldmaker of Yand-Yildun is a captivating start to a trilogy that will appeal to fans of both sci-fi and fantasy. It is a book for those who enjoy stories rich in character development, world-building and complex themes. I recommend it to readers who appreciate layered narratives and aren’t afraid to dive into a world as complex as the characters that inhabit it.

TALTRIX Book One SURVIVING THE GAUNTLET
Posted by Literary Titan

In the year 5514, Redder Torch, or RT, is bound for Taltrix, an elite space academy, to reunite with her brother Avi and escape the shadow of her father, the infamous criminal Grave Torch. Known for his claim that RT is the prophesied unifier of the multiverse, Grave’s words have ignited fear and fascination across the galaxy. As RT confronts the perilous gauntlet on the mercenary planet Keplar Neptune, her very survival depends on proving her worth. With her father pulling strings from prison, the question looms: Will RT fulfill the prophecy and trigger a galactic conflict, or forge her own destiny and break free from her father’s grip?
TALTRIX: Surviving the Gauntlet by Cecilia Copeland introduces readers to a vivid and scientifically grounded universe where futuristic technology and dark biodynamics blend seamlessly. From the opening chapter, the intricate world-building captivates, drawing readers into a future that feels both imaginative and hauntingly plausible. The detailed portrayal of technological advancements and societal hierarchies adds depth, crafting a universe that feels not only possible but entirely immersive. The combination of science and fiction creates a sense of awe and wonder as the reader delves deeper into this meticulously constructed world. The novel’s plot is masterfully crafted, full of unexpected twists and turns that never feel artificial. Each plot development flows naturally, maintaining the integrity of the story while keeping readers constantly engaged. The tension, particularly during the gauntlet sequences, is palpable, with stakes that feel genuinely life-threatening. Copeland expertly balances the pacing, ensuring that while the action is intense, there’s ample room for character growth. The surprises in the narrative enhance the overall story rather than distract from it, ensuring that the plot remains cohesive and compelling from start to finish.
What truly sets this book apart is its character development. RT’s evolution is central to the story, and her journey is as much about self-discovery as it is about survival. The tension in her relationships, particularly with her brother Avi and his girlfriend, adds layers of personal conflict that resonate throughout the narrative. These relationships provide fertile ground to explore universal themes, such as identity, expectation, and personal autonomy. RT’s struggle to carve out her own path makes her a deeply relatable and compelling protagonist, and readers will find themselves emotionally invested in her fate.
Surviving the Gauntlet is a dynamic and immersive sci-fi adventure that blends exhilarating action with emotional depth and imaginative world-building. Whether you’re a seasoned science fiction fan or new to the genre, this novel offers a fresh and engaging story that will leave you eager for more. If you’re searching for a book that not only entertains but challenges, this is a must-read.

Paranormal Gifts
Posted by Literary-Titan

Utcan’s Talisman follows a woman helping her friend escape a manipulative ruler trying to exploit his healing abilities who winds up in a small fishing village where they rekindle past connections and make new allies. What was your inspiration for the wild journey you take readers on in this novel?
I’m glad that you see Bybiis the scholar as the protagonist. She’s the narrator of two sections of the book (with five sections). Bybiis had no tutor or role model for how to develop her paranormal gifts. Trial and error can be painful and doesn’t expand her potential, plus she’s resentful that others are indifferent to her need to serve her growing powers.
This theme resonates with isolated gifted persons — like artists or athletes — who are not in step with siblings or school friends, and who must leave the family situation to explore a higher calling. The struggle is extra difficult for a woman with no family and discounted by the powers that be.
One inspiration was from Gene Wolfe’s Executioner series where the protagonist was an executioner! The reader saw him as a whole person with flaws and hopes and setbacks and betraying his friends even.
The twist I added is that Bybiis is female and not able to trade on her looks. Male readers often read past the story action for the women, waiting for a hero to make his entrance. Only Bybiis can save Bybiis.
What are some things that you find interesting about the human condition that you think makes for great fiction?
Wow, the human condition. A broad question. I can give a broad answer, I suppose. Science fiction stories are often about a hero who solves a problem that sets a specific situation right and protects the innocent. He wins the day!
My worldview was more about a community of people who need the skills of the group to succeed. People of the same tradition may not like each other, but over the decades, they discover the rewards of working together into progress for the nation or city-state, or duchy. Leaders are often just men or women who are thrust into positions that demand character and integrity – like Zelensky in Ukraine. Those who lack the needed moral fiber find other routes to political rewards.
What advice would you give to a writer working on their first book?
Count the cost. It’s about the story, not about being famous. I teach young writers in online courses. I’m always amazed when they talk about a publishing career and what celebrity will play the book’s hero in the movie.
Writing has many stages, and the first few can seem overwhelming for how time-consuming and reiterative is the process. Can you devote the hours to developing a distinctive writer’s style and a plot that’s fresh and compelling?
I’ve seen many writers with talent drop out. Even though they may have control of language and a strong narrative voice, they may not have found a life-long theme to pursue. What do you want the world to know? Not about you the writer, but about the human condition, that’s so compelling that you devote your life to exploring the dynamics of the struggle?
For me, it was presenting multi-dimensional female characters. What is your essential need to write?
I hope the series continues in other books. If so, where will the story take readers?
You ask good questions. Book 6 is titled THE MATRIX OPAL and may come out in 2025. The writer’s style takes a turn in that narrators are multiple and not restricted to one section. I figure that if the reader has made it to Book 6, then she knows the characters. So we can mix it up for character voices and POV.
Bybiis is joined by more young gifted characters. A powerful enemy emerges with child kidnappings and assassinations. The demands to grow paranormal powers are more than how to live well. The gifted group must put their skills into service for strengthening group defenses.

Bybiis el Putuki and her friend Opin the healer must navigate the demands of the khalif in Utica who would turn Opin’s gift to serve him. Jesse Hartley and Hershel Henry find each other, but each is very changed from recent events. Can they reawaken the currents of feeling between them?
When Bybiis is able to force a release from the khalif’s control, she and Opin land at a small fishing village from where Mrs. Shaw is exploring the ruins of a lost city. Jesse Hartley joins them, but the conflicts that grew in Utica get more intense. Jesse is distracted when Hershel Henry invites her to rejoin her father the Consortium General at the rainbow bridge construction site.

The Cycle of Eden: Shadows of Reality
Posted by Literary Titan

Seth Varkees, the Young God, embarks on a journey long foretold, a destiny steeped in ancient prophecy. On the enigmatic Dark Continent, he hunts the sinister beings known as the Hands of Sin, entities that have sown chaos and corruption throughout the world. His task is far from simple. These enemies have woven alternate realities, casting Eden into deep shadow. As Seth navigates this treacherous path, the Neo God watches from the periphery, their fates seemingly intertwined. A final showdown looms on the horizon. Will Seth resist the dark temptations crafted by the Neo God and the Hands of Sin, or will evil prevail?
The Cycle of Eden: Shadows of Reality, by Daniel Varona, continues the expansive narrative of the Cycle of Eden series. This fantasy tale is likely to resonate with YA audiences, though it certainly holds appeal for older readers as well. The story centers on Seth, a protagonist born to embody goodness, destined to clash with the malevolent forces represented by Cain and the Hands of Sin. This prophecy is not merely symbolic; it is Seth’s reality. He carries the immense weight of this burden, knowing he is literally the savior Eden has awaited. Despite his godlike nature, Seth grapples with the fears and flaws of a mortal man, adding layers to his character. Seth’s complexity makes him compelling and relatable to readers. His vulnerability draws readers in, making his struggle against formidable adversaries even more engaging. The conflict between Seth and his enemies feels grand in scope, filled with twists that keep the reader on edge. Varona crafts an intriguing world with rich detail, and a strong cast of supporting characters—Ria, Valentina, and Chase—breathes life into Eden. The interplay among these characters adds depth and texture to the narrative.
Shadows of Reality delivers a captivating fantasy experience. The story’s unique premise, combined with its well-drawn characters and unexpected moments, makes it a compelling read. It’s a novel that both young adult readers and seasoned fantasy enthusiasts can enjoy, offering a journey through a vividly imagined world where light and dark forces collide.

fúath slugair
Posted by Literary_Titan

Fractured State follows a man entrusted with safeguarding a community of Druids who must navigate a perilous world where reality, mythology, and technology intersect and face relentless threats to survival. What was the inspiration for the original and fascinating idea at the center of the book?
Great question. Fractured State occurs within the world of The Blighted Earth, where humankind is both the planet’s dominant species and ‘the blight.’ Thus, the level of frustration and even disdain for humanity which bleeds through in the narrative leads the reader to question the narrator’s origin and species—High Sentient? Likely, an elemental or Guardian Spirit. For the series, the downstream story arcs were fleshed out first, and I had to map primary story arcs back to Book One to set the stage and create the conditions for what was going to happen later. I needed a great character who captured our species’ duality—flawed and yet possessing great potential; an aspect of the human condition which so vexes the High Sentients. As a combat veteran myself, I am intimately familiar with the challenges and struggles facing many of our military veterans, and as an obscure, religious minority, Druidry presented a likely target for discrimination while also possessing strong ties to nature. Finally, I needed an effective counter to Chaos’s shadow campaign to weaponize human emotion, which spawned the concept of the fúath slugair or ‘Hate-eater’—hence, Arden was born!
I find the world you created in this novel brimming with possibilities. Where did the inspiration for the setting come from and how did it change as you were writing?
To “set the table” for the Blighted Earth series, I needed the right set of conditions for Chaos to exploit in His relentless pursuit to initiate the Great Cascade and bring about the Discordant on Earth. The makings of environmental catastrophe (extended drought, wildfires, natural habitat erosion, human over-settlement, etc.) have been present and worsening for some time, with climate change driving more destructive weather extremes. Additionally, the novel was written during the trials and tribulations we all endured during the COVID pandemic and the unfortunate events in the aftermath of the 2020 Presidential election. When coupled with all the emerging threats, conflicts, and uncertainty which have emerged in last few years, as well as their corresponding negative effects on our collective state of mind and emotions, the real world itself provided all the drama and necessary ingredients for ruinous potential at continental scale. The final step was to inject the enduring struggle of otherworldly entities and supernatural beings into volatile mix—and “voila”—this author had everything he needed to create the “fractured state.” As far as changes during the writing process, extraordinarily little changed in the overall setting in the United States, but local places, encounters, and characters within Arden’s story arc changed as his supernatural powers and the overall impact he was to have in the series gained greater fidelity. These factors then shaped more ‘tactical’ aspects of the novel, such as finding the right settings and locations within the state of Texas.
What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?
I explore several themes in Fractured State, and to me, some of the more important ones are:
- Human belief systems and the huge impacts they have had on the environment and biodiversity of our world: How would things be different if we all adopted the Lakota philosophy of “we are all relatives?” We are the planet’s dominant species, but that does not place us ‘above’ other living things; non-human species are not just resources to be exploited. Humankind’s role obligates us to serve as the Earth’s stewards for the benefit of all life. Taking this concept another huge step further, how would our approach to life and living change if we were all children of a sentient planet?
- The adverse impacts of our technology: Human innovation and the ability to “make tools” to enhance our abilities and our lives has always been a strength, but it also has the negative corollary effects of extending the reach, influence, and power of bad actors. I would go as far as to say that, in many ways, technology is contributing to our “devolution” as a species.
- The rise of incivility in our civilization: The human attributes which enabled our meteoric rise to the top of the food chain—cooperation, communication, community—are being rent apart by divisiveness, corruption, and dishonesty within society. It is like a contagious disease which is fundamentally changing us for the worse and causing us to turn our backs on the things that made us “great.”
- Storytelling, one of humanity’s other great attributes, is also being co-opted to insidious ends: This is nothing new in our relatively short history as a species, but the line between exaggeration and lie has gone from blurred to practically nonexistent. Worse, the power of lies proliferated by influential people has been exponentially magnified by our own technologies.
- The process of radicalization and the rising threat of ‘homegrown’ violent extremists to our American democracy: In a world where life resources are becoming ever more limited and contested, while the gap between the “haves” and “have-nots” continues to grow, the numbers of disenfranchised citizens continue to grow. They are the target population for radicalization, and everything previously mentioned amplifies the ability of extreme actors to make more converts more quickly … and they do not even have to be in the same room, or state, or even in our country!
When will book two be available? Can you give us an idea of where that book will take readers?
Great news: Blighted Earth fans can expect to see Long Leg from the Blight Earth sometime next year. I am pretty far along in knitting together and refining the manuscript from the initial draft. In fact, I actually have the rough drafts completed for the next three books in what is currently planned to be a nine-book series. In terms of Book Two expectations: expect the unexpected! Another story arc begins with a new cast of characters who will have to accept the baton and carry the gripping narrative forward in the Natural Order’s struggle against Chaos and his minions. Where will Book Two take place? Hint: pay careful attention to Parim’s words towards the end of the Fractured State epilogue. Lastly, though it is hard to pick favorites, Book Two is one of the stories I really want to share with the world!

His objective: initiate the Great Cascade and bring about the Discordant on Earth. His target: North America, where the Chaotic flashpoint within human civilization has occurred…in Texas?
The eternal struggle between order and chaos is an inescapable condition of the universe. Caught in the middle is the delicate balance necessary for life to exist and prosper in our world. On Earth, the opposing sides in this timeless conflict are Earth Mother’s Natural Order and Chaos’s Force Corrupted-the En’Troop-EE. The Great Cascade is underway, and with the High Sentients of the Natural Order reduced and in disarray, there may be no stopping Chaos this time.
In Fractured State by R.M. Tembreull, the reality of existence on Earth is reinterpreted, where all living things are seen as the children of a sentient planet. Our immortal souls are gifts from Earth Mother, and all living beings progress through many lives within the Hierarchy of Sentience. If our world could feel, would this change how you perceive our world?

Utcan’s Talisman
Posted by Literary Titan

Utcan’s Talisman by Stella Atrium, the fifth installment in the Tribal Wars series, immerses readers in the adventurous journey of Bybiis el Putuki, a young woman entangled in daring exploits and complex political intrigues. Alongside her friend Opin, Bybiis faces the formidable challenge of resisting the manipulative intentions of the Khalif, who seeks to exploit Opin’s healing abilities for his own gain. Their escape leads them to a quaint fishing village, where they encounter new allies and reunite with Jesse Hartley. As Jesse and Hershel Henry attempt to rekindle their past connection, they must navigate the changes that time has wrought. Meanwhile, the escalating tension and peril in Utica force its inhabitants to defend their lives, even if it means defying their leaders.
Through Bybiis’s experiences, readers are drawn into Utica’s rich history and culture. Bybiis emerges as a compelling protagonist—resourceful, courageous, and unwavering in her loyalty. Her internal struggles with identity and belonging add depth to her character. The world-building in this novel is exceptional, painting a vivid picture of Utica as a city that is both familiar and otherworldly, with intricate details that enhance its allure. Atrium skillfully intertwines themes of identity, belonging, and the pursuit of knowledge as Bybiis navigates her place in the world and uncovers hidden truths. The plot is dynamic, filled with unexpected twists that keep readers thoroughly engaged. Despite the large cast of characters, each is relatable, though some may find the abrupt introductions challenging to follow. The novel’s exploration of the tension between tradition and progress is both thought-provoking and relevant, offering insights that resonate with contemporary issues. The book’s complexity can be daunting, especially at the outset, where the storyline takes time to unfold.
Utcan’s Talisman offers a rich, engaging narrative that will captivate fans of the series. Readers will be drawn into the rich world the author has created and find themselves deeply immersed in the story as it unfolds waiting to see where the characters’ paths take them next.
