Five Stories Short: A Supernatural Quintet
Posted by Literary Titan

Five Stories Short: A Supernatural Quintet is a spellbinding collection of five short stories that transports readers into the realm of the extraordinary. Karen Black masterfully crafts narratives where the boundary between reality and the supernatural dissolves, taking you on journeys that are both mesmerizing and thought-provoking. From psychic abilities to whimsical pixies, ghostly apparitions, and the enigma of ancient beings, each story offers its own unique exploration of the unknown.
The collection stands out for its diverse themes and imaginative storytelling. Black invites readers to suspend disbelief, immerse themselves in eerie atmospheres, and embrace the unexpected twists that unfold. Her writing captivates with a mix of whimsy, tension, and subtle emotional depth that makes the supernatural feel tantalizingly real. The first story immediately pulls you in, offering a fascinating exploration of clairvoyance and psychic gifts. The premise is compelling, though certain plot points, particularly the protagonist’s imprisonment, felt a little far-fetched. The circumstances surrounding it—intended to heighten conflict—seemed at odds with the story’s self-defense logic. In contrast, the second story shines with emotional resonance and well-developed characters. It leaves a lasting impression, its themes deeply affecting and beautifully executed.
The third entry maintains the collection’s eerie tone and solid pacing, offering enough intrigue to keep readers engaged. The fourth story emerges as the standout of the quintet. Black’s storytelling excels here, building expectations only to shatter them with a twist that’s both brilliant and unexpected. This narrative alone elevates the collection, showcasing her ability to surprise and delight readers in equal measure. The fifth and final story wraps up the anthology with the essence of a classic ghost tale—timeless yet enhanced with an extra layer of intrigue. It serves as a fitting conclusion, maintaining the supernatural allure that runs through the collection.
Five Stories Short: A Supernatural Quintet proved to be a delightful surprise. It rekindled my appreciation for supernatural fiction. Karen Black’s engaging prose and imaginative plots kept me racing through each story, eagerly anticipating what would come next. The collection’s brevity makes it an easy yet satisfying read, perfect for anyone seeking an escape into the mysterious and the otherworldly. For fans of supernatural fiction or those new to the genre, this book delivers a blend of charm, suspense, and clever twists. Karen Black has curated a quintet that showcases her storytelling prowess, leaving readers both satisfied and yearning for more otherworldly adventures.

Strong Connection to Nature
Posted by Literary-Titan
A Freezing Ski Trip follows siblings Liam and Lily on an exciting yet challenging ski trip through the snowy woods to Pine Cottage. What was the inspiration for your story?
There are many exciting things to tell about winter and skiing in Finland. Our winter can look incredible with thick, powdery snow and glittering ice, and snowy terrain is the best place for recreation and winter sports.
However, freezing and icy conditions can surprise even the most experienced skier or camper, and even light outdoor activity can turn into a fight for survival, as in this story.
In this fairy tale, I wanted to highlight how nature can offer different experiences and circumstances. We should take them into account and take sufficient precautions to prevent damage.
I always hope that my stories inspire children to be brave, not reckless, and to believe in their ability to survive. I also want to point out that when people find themselves in difficult situations, it is essential to cooperate and avoid panicking to survive – just like Liam and Lily did!
The siblings encounter a variety of mishaps while skiing. Did you take any inspiration from your own life when developing this book?
As a child in Eastern Finland, skiing and snowy winters were familiar to us. I have attached two memories to this story, one from my childhood and the other from a dangerous skiing trip I later made as an adult with my family.
In Liam and Lily’s story, they find themselves on a steep hill that is too icy to ski down. I encountered that myself from time to time on my childhood ski trips. The result could be a broken ski—fortunately, no broken bones! Once, my mother accidentally fell off the slope and sank from tip to toe into the soft snow. Other family members laughed, but she didn’t when she got up covered in snow, but luckily in one piece.
However, this book’s primary inspiration is an icy ski trip my husband and I took with two small children to a remote island miles from any settlement. I still get chills when I think about the long route back after sunset and the freezing temperatures. It took all our strength and courage to finally make it across the dark and vast ice fields to the beach where our car was parked. There were no cell phones back then, and no one knew to expect us! The incident inspired a decent book, but I would never do a similar trip
again!
What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?
In this story, I have focused on three main themes: connection to nature, confidence in one’s abilities, and the power of cooperation.
I grew up close to nature having the opportunity to wander freely in the nearby forests and fields as well as row and swim in the lakes. Both summer nature and winter snow and frost became familiar, and I learned to act alone even in demanding situations. This is how I developed a strong connection to nature, which has always been my strength. I hope that as many children as possible can experience this.
I was lucky to be surrounded by wise adults who trusted my abilities. A child must have the right balance of freedom and safe boundaries. Encouraging independent decisions is good as long as the child gets enough security when it’s needed.
One of life’s important lessons is that we don’t live alone. Most people have someone close to them with whom they can share activities and experiences. Working together and finding solutions is easier than just coping alone. When the situation is challenging and your abilities are insufficient, it’s better to admit that a helping hand is needed. There’s no shame in being weak or incompetent. Besides, solving difficulties together with a trusted person can be fun!
Making mistakes and failing isn’t the end of the world, as long as you overcome the situation and learn something for future attempts.
What is the next book in the I Did It series that you are working on, and when will it be available?
In addition to the four books already published in my I Did It Series and illustrated by Catty Flores, I have at least two more planned. Those books are already ready-made packages in my mind, and I could turn them into books at any time. I must arrange a suitable time to write them down and agree with my trusted illustrator on the continuation. Right now, we are working on a completely different book with her, which we will publish in the spring. But we may embark on these new adventures soon after that.
I still need to name the next I Did It! books, but I can tell you both are related to bicycles. A bike meant a lot to me as a child. It was a symbol of freedom and independence. It took me to places I couldn’t have visited otherwise, kilometers away from home. I was lucky to have safe surroundings.
In one story, the main character participates in a traffic race at school, facing surprising challenges and disappointments. In the other story, the hero overestimates his own abilities as a road cyclist, and because of that, he gets into great trouble. Both stories tell about not giving up and the satisfaction that comes with it: I Did It!

Follow the Rules
Posted by Literary-Titan
Adventures at Lake Omigosh follows two friends at summer camp who go point on the camp’s lake to try and find the mysterious creature that everyone claims lives there. What was the inspiration for your story?
As a youngster, my family would typically spend a week at Liberty Lake, just outside of Spokane Washington, where I was born and raised. The camp I described in Lake Omigosh was very similar to what I experienced. I was also a Boy Scout and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout at age 13, which was unusual. So I had plenty of experiences to draw upon, except of course, for the creature!
What were some ideas that were important for you to share in this book?
The main lesson here is to follow the rules. The boys ignored all three rules about boating: Too late in the day, storm brewing, and no life jackets!!
The art in this book is fantastic. What was the art collaboration process like with the illustrator Bryan Janky?
Bryan Janky is very talented and was very open to suggestions and collaboration. He is a gem and is involved in another book as well!
Is this the first book in the series? If so, when is the next book coming out, and what can your fans expect in the next story?
The next book is called The Dancing Shoes and is being printed now and can be preordered on Mascot and should be available for distribution on Amazon as well in about two months. The next book is called How Flowers Got Their Colors and is in production. The fifth book The Lost Locket On The Golden Gate Bridge is undergoing editing and should be ready for the artwork shortly!

Vengeance of the Vanished Ones, Book One
Posted by Literary Titan

Vengeance of the Vanished Ones, Book One by Lee Orlich Bertram, is a thrilling tale that masterfully weaves mystery, suspense, and adventure. The story centers on Marcos Andersson, an archaeologist in Mexico determined to uncover the truth behind his best friend Dave’s mysterious death. Dave had claimed to have discovered something groundbreaking before his demise. What could it have been, and did it cost him his life? Marcos’s journey becomes even more complex when he crosses paths with Susan Cohen, an intelligent and alluring woman with secrets of her own. As the layers of deception unravel, the stakes rise. Can Susan’s revelations bring them closer together, or will they drive them apart? And what about Marcos’s own hidden truths? Their adventure takes a perilous turn, propelling them into a deadly dance with forces beyond their control.
Marcos stands out as a sharply drawn, captivating protagonist. His charisma and intellect make him an instant favorite, pulling readers into his journey. Susan, his enigmatic love interest, matches his intrigue with her own blend of brilliance and cunning. Their chemistry crackles on the page, with each interaction a highlight of the narrative. The story’s tone strikes a perfect balance—upbeat yet tinged with darkness, always keeping the reader on edge. The pacing is precise, propelling the plot forward while allowing moments of rich character development. Lee Orlich Bertram’s world-building is exceptional, immersing the reader in a vivid, pulse-pounding adventure.
Several moments shine in this gripping tale. The instant connection between Marcos and Susan adds a spark to their partnership. Marcos’s internal struggle over Susan’s ties to the spirit world raises intriguing questions about trust and belief. Their perilous trek through Mexico, punctuated by breathtaking landscapes and looming threats, brims with tension. The mystery surrounding Dave’s death unfolds with masterful precision, and the danger posed by the spirits heightens the stakes to electrifying levels.
This story is flawless. It’s one of the most compelling narratives I’ve read in recent memory. From its dynamic characters to its intricate plot, every element resonates with excitement and intrigue. Lee Orlich Bertram has crafted a mesmerizing, action-packed, and character-driven adventure. Vengeance of the Vanished Ones, Book One is a triumph, and I eagerly anticipate more stories featuring the unforgettable Marcos Andersson.

Warrior Goddess: Book Two of the Mei Ling Lee Trilogy (The Achilles Battle Fleet)
Posted by Literary Titan

Brendan Wilson’s Warrior Goddess is an action-packed sci-fi epic that follows Marine Captain Mei Ling Lee as she navigates a universe rife with chaos, corruption, and conflict. Set in a distant future where humanity grapples with lawlessness and war, this sequel plunges readers into thrilling battles, moral quandaries, and Lee’s relentless journey to lead her team with grit and honor. While the book stands alone, its rich backstory hints at an expansive world built with meticulous care, drawing on themes of resilience and personal sacrifice.
What struck me first was Wilson’s knack for pacing. Right from the opening scene, with Mei Ling and her team hurtling through space in fiery orbs toward a high-stakes rescue, I was hooked. Wilson vividly describes Lee’s free-fall into enemy territory, balancing technical details of battle armor and insertion tactics with raw human emotions like exhilaration and fear. These moments of intensity are complemented by quieter reflections, such as Mei Ling’s thoughts on her tumultuous transition from the Navy to the Marines. It felt like I was skydiving alongside her—heart pounding, adrenaline coursing.
The character depth is another highlight. Mei Ling Lee is fierce, loyal, and deeply human, wrestling with her identity and role as a leader. I appreciated her interactions with Gunnery Sergeant MacGregor, whose calm, no-nonsense demeanor perfectly contrasts her fiery drive. One of my favorite scenes is when Lee confronts a smuggler threatening a child. The tension is palpable as she coolly outmaneuvers him, a testament to her warrior spirit and sharp mind. Wilson excels at making these encounters personal, giving the action weight and stakes beyond mere spectacle. Wilson’s background in martial arts and military operations shines through, lending authenticity to the combat and camaraderie among soldiers.
Warrior Goddess is not just a story of battles and strategy but one of courage and humanity in the face of overwhelming odds. Readers who love character-driven sci-fi with a strong female lead will find much to admire here. If you’re a fan of The Expanse or Starship Troopers, this book will feel like home. Personally, I can’t wait to see where Mei Ling’s path leads next.

To Survive and Preserve
Posted by Literary-Titan

Their Village, Their Fortress, follows a soldier who defies orders and sets out on a journey to alert his home village and surrounding communities of a threat headed their way from a new weapon that causes mass destruction. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?
There are two reasons behind how I set up this story. One is that it’s a standalone add-on to a wider series of seven books, in a world I have already built. Once I decided what kind of story I intended to write, I found where it might fit in existing continuity so that I wouldn’t have to create another new fantasy world; I don’t feel like broad-strokes world-building as much as I once did.
Conveniently, the seventh book in that series established a highland village where I had decided the villagers would tend to have Ukrainian names. I gave up on inventing names years ago, though some examples survive in earlier works. Since then, I have tried to mindfully borrow real names while considering what they mean and attempting a vague cultural consistency within a land. For example: Derek, from previous works, was from a land where most others around had Polish names, but empires tend to include many cultures for both benign and nefarious reasons, and people do move around, so you would encounter names from other cultures of Eastern Europe.
All the context the reader would need from this book gets mentioned in Their Village, Their Fortress: their old duke from a century ago, brave Galyna who went to confront him, people who fled from an aggressive imperial army to the safety of a land that welcomed them.
As for why I felt like writing a love letter to the power of community, where villagers with such names and traditional styles of dress stand together against a brutal imperialistic hierarchy… I have always used my work as a proxy to consider current events, but I have never been more direct.
What were some of the emotional and moral guidelines you followed when developing your characters?
The number one thing is balance. Even when I have a clear agenda, no named character is meant to be a caricature. The woman who believes her purpose is to interrogate every idea is valuable to the community for doing so, even if she makes enemies by taking things too far. The man with an uncanny knack for quick learning lives through severe struggles with the compassionate understanding of others; he does not just “have powers” that make him useful in the moment, he is a person with a complicated life to handle. You are meant to view the catalyst character as rather obnoxious at times, but he doesn’t ignore his missteps and at least he tries to do better.
The invading soldiers, as per my other works, are not evil inhuman creatures; they face the consequences of their participation just as they would the consequences of refusing orders, but they are people, possessing moral agency, private opinions, and responsibility for their actions. Even the character intended to be the least likable, the battalion leader, a cultist bureaucrat, believes thoroughly that his invasion is meant to improve the lives of those he intends to conquer–but his rigidly hierarchical worldview holds no space for contrary opinions, and he believes so much in this imaginary new world he would build for them that he would burn down the one they know and love. He is utterly steeped in beliefs that make him the hero of his own story and the villain of mine.
What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?
Community is the first thing, the heroism and value of the everyday. To handle that appropriately, I needed to flip my usual approach. So many of my prior books tell the stories of powerful people, with drama encompassing an entire continent. The action most often revolved around dukes, crown princesses, warlords, and generals. Sure, I would give perspectives and consequences, I would show you people having to abandon their homes because war is not neat or tidy and the battlefield you will read about is often someone’s ruined community space. The stories were driven by single personalities who would alter or preserve the course of their world, but only with the help of countless people who struggled, few of whom ever got named compared to their number.
For this book, I narrowed the scope. My initial idea, which I didn’t stick by, was to have the entire story happen within the bounds of Nimmlisok village–for most of these characters, that’s their world. While power brokers wage devastating wars from an impersonal bird’s eye view, I give you the story of everyday people coping with these grand maneuvers, trying to survive and preserve what matters to them. People who don’t need their world to be remade in anyone’s image, resisting the brutal power that punches down at them. This time, the power brokers from the other stories are almost entirely absent–a couple are named, while one of them says a few consequential things in the prologue. Their stories have already been told in other books.
Is this the first book in the series? If so, when is the next book coming out, and what can your fans expect in the next story?
This book is meant to stand alone as a read, though it exists as the eighth work in a single continuity.
My original plan for this series was six books: a trilogy followed by a prequel trilogy. Since the end of the first trilogy, I have tried to make everything that followed independently readable because I know how daunting it is to dive into a long fantasy series. I also think my writing has improved since the first trilogy, and I would rather lead with better material: why not jump in at Prince Ewald the Brave, or The Fate of Lenn, and read anything else at your leisure?
The seventh book, The Redemption of Jarek, was not really in this plan, but it was a contingency. The story was hinted at by existing works. I knew where it fit with the others in case I wished to keep writing, or if fans demanded more. One day, I asked myself why I should wait. If I knew what the story should be, perhaps I should write that before I forgot or before life had me otherwise occupied.
This eighth book was not even a contingency plan. I had no rough draft or even notes about it, yet somewhere between June and July, I unexpectedly had a book. Once I had it, I did not hesitate to produce it. How do I know I will ever have another idea, and such ideal circumstances to write it?
That’s how it is from now on. I can’t reasonably guarantee any more books when the eighth one was a surprise to begin with. I encourage readers to seek out and appreciate the eight that are on the market.

When a calamitous new weapon fells a fortress once considered invincible, one soldier rides home to deliver the terrible news. This journey is against orders, but he insists no village is too small to be warned of what’s coming, even if he’s not sure what they can do. He delivers an impassioned call to action, daring them to try. Reconnecting with his community involves reconsidering why he left it, and what he might regret having left behind; but he soon faces scrutiny when they realize something about his appeal doesn’t add up.
Join the struggle of eclectic villagers as each decides their answer. Each confronts what’s happening however they must, journeying through their emotions and sometimes delving into their personal histories to reconcile themselves. Each resister’s specialties enrich their efforts to scrape together a victory from what’s on hand. The events to follow reveal not just how they will fight, but why.
Their truth, their skills, and their efforts enable them to resist—but even if they believe, can a hastily-prepared volunteer militia of farmers defeat a battalion of trained soldiers?
