Wearing a Different Paint Job
Posted by Literary-Titan

Kianola follows a shy teen who discovers an unexpected side of himself in a video game where he gains a newfound confidence that he takes back into the real world. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?
This story was inspired by my own. Growing up, I was shy, and making friends was a skill I didn’t have. Video games have always been a big part of my life, and I found that playing online video games at an early age allowed me to interact with people without that barrier and practice being the version of myself I wanted to be.
In many contemporary coming-of-age fiction novels, authors often add their own life experiences to the story. Are there any bits of you in this story?
Absolutely. My story and the stories of people very special to me are layered throughout this one, although maybe wearing a different paint job.
What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?
The most important theme would be friendship. The best part of playing an online video game isn’t the game itself but the bonds you form with the other players. Some of those bonds are shallow, and others run so deep you carry them in some way for the rest of your life.
What is the next book that you are working on and when can your fans expect it to be out?
A rewrite of Notion, my first fantasy novel should be finished early 2025!

Nole, an eighth-grader who’s quiet, shy, and often overlooked by his classmates, discovers an unexpected side of himself in the virtual world of Enix. In this realm, he evolves from an awkward boy into a courageous hero, confronting mythical beasts and diving headfirst into thrilling adventures. Each triumph in Enix sparks a newfound confidence in him—a spark that he carries back into the real world, where he faces relentless bullies, an unspoken crush, and the daunting everyday challenges of middle school. Yet, the central question remains: Can this digital bravery withstand the trials waiting for him beyond the screen?
In Kianola, Nathan Roth crafts a touching, resonant story centered around Nole’s journey of self-discovery. The narrative pulls you right into the life of this timid eighth-grader, making his brave virtual escapades feel familiar and surprisingly uplifting. Roth’s vivid descriptions of Enix’s fantastical realm draw you in, making it easy to imagine standing beside Nole as he learns that the victories he earns in a game may shape the way he faces his reality. What stands out in Kianola is Roth’s nuanced portrayal of gaming not as mere escapism but as a space where Nole unearths parts of himself he never knew existed. The blend of real and virtual worlds is seamless, creating a singular, compelling journey that mirrors many young people’s struggles: dealing with bullies, navigating first crushes, and yearning to belong. Enix isn’t just a game; it’s a crucible where Nole’s courage is tested and forged, and Roth’s heartfelt crafting of this world gives it depth and resonance. The novel doesn’t shy away from meaningful themes. It touches on identity, courage, and the quiet struggle for self-confidence that many young readers will find relatable. Roth’s approach to these themes is refreshing—he presents Nole’s challenges with honesty and a light touch, never veering into melodrama. Each of Nole’s interactions, whether with his friends, family, or himself, unfolds naturally. We see how the smallest encounters can leave a lasting impact, shaping who he becomes. Roth reminds us that courage can be found in unexpected places and that even lessons learned in fantasy worlds can hold true in real life. Roth’s writing style strikes the perfect balance: engaging, straightforward, easy to connect with, yet rich enough to make Enix come alive. He brings just the right amount of detail to keep the fantasy realm exciting while grounding the story in the genuine, relatable experiences of middle school life. The dialogue flows effortlessly, making Nole’s world feel authentic and compelling. Roth creates a fast-paced yet meaningful narrative, where readers will find themselves cheering Nole on as he learns to face his fears, whether on-screen or off.
Kianola is a must-read for middle-grade readers, young gamers, or anyone who has ever felt like they don’t quite fit in. With relatable themes, engaging storytelling, and a protagonist you can’t help but root for, this book is a wonderful recommendation. For those who have ever wondered if the courage found behind a screen can translate into real-life bravery, Kianola offers a story that might just provide an answer.

Their Village, Their Fortress
Posted by Literary Titan

Dylan Madeley’s Their Village, Their Fortress presents a gripping tale of courage, community, and survival set against the backdrop of a crumbling empire. When an allegedly impregnable fortress falls and the commanding general fails to warn the smaller outlying villages of an approaching threat, the story pivots to one soldier, Oleksiy. Disagreeing with his army’s decision to retreat and regroup, Oleksiy defies orders. He sets off on a perilous journey to alert his home village and surrounding communities, driven by an unbreakable resolve to prepare his people for the coming storm. The narrative follows Oleksiy’s return, where he unites with the villagers in a desperate bid for survival. As he shares the dire news, Madeley immerses readers in the lives of these ordinary people, revealing their hopes, fears, and resilience. Among the villagers, one character stands out: Vitaliy. Initially appearing overly emotional, his intense feelings seem to cloud his judgment. Yet, as the story unfolds, Madeley masterfully unpacks the complexity of Vitaliy’s character. His emotions, rather than being a weakness, become his strength, offering a unique perspective and a deep-seated empathy that shapes his actions and decisions.
Despite its brevity, the book lacks none of the essentials. The plot is expertly constructed, with clear, vivid descriptions of strategic discussions and battle preparations. The narrative’s pulse quickens as villagers debate daring, risky plans to outwit the enemy. Yet, it is the nuanced portrayal of characters that truly sets this story apart. Madeley introduces a cast of distinct individuals, each brought to life with carefully woven backstories that illuminate their motivations and fears. These glimpses into their pasts enrich the present, adding emotional depth and resonance to the unfolding drama.
One of the most compelling aspects of the novel is the portrayal of the village’s unity. Madeley captures the essence of a close-knit community where every individual has a role, and each strength complements another’s weakness. This interdependence is painted with finesse, highlighting the unspoken understanding among villagers. The friendship between Vitaliy and Denys exemplifies this bond. When Vitaliy acts impulsively, Denys never judges. Instead, he offers space and understanding, modeling a compassionate response that others in the village come to respect and learn from. It’s a testament to the emotional intelligence and mutual respect that bind these people together.
With an eye for small yet significant details, Madeley’s writing invites readers to connect deeply with the characters. Every moment, every interaction feels intentional, crafted to draw readers into the villagers’ struggle for survival. The book’s balance of action, emotional depth, and richly drawn relationships makes it a compelling read, one that lingers long after the final page is turned. Their Village, Their Fortress is a testament to the power of community, the strength found in vulnerability, and the indomitable human spirit in the face of insurmountable odds.

Something That Isn’t What It Seems
Posted by Literary Titan

Forgotten Realm of Secrets follows a curious young boy seeking answers to the truth about his identity who winds up in a realm where dreams and reality blur. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?
The inspiration came from a short story I read on a blog several years ago. It was based on the idea of “a square peg not fitting in a round hole”and was semi-autobiographical in nature. What made it especially unique was that the protagonist wasn’t a person—the tale was told in a fantasy fiction narrative where the character was actually a “little square” wooden block, not a human. I found the premise deeply touching, and with the agreement of the blogger, knew it could be beautifully incorporated into a fantasy fiction novel—especially since fantasy fiction is my passion. The feeling of not quite fitting in resonates with so many people, and I was inspired to take that emotional theme and expand it into a larger, more complex story. Forgotten Realm of Secrets was born from that. I imagined what the character would be like as a living breathing person and Little Square came to life. I envisioned him not “fitting in” to his world, and going on a long journey to find the truth of who he was; and in a fantasy world, the possibilities of what could happen to him are untold.
I find the world you created in this novel brimming with possibilities. Where did the inspiration for the setting come from and how did it change as you were writing?
To me, there’s nothing more intriguing-or frightening, than something that isn’t what it seems. When I first imagined the realm where Lit was born, I pictured the setting of a peaceful, charming small-town. On the surface, it seems almost perfect. But as you explore, you realize something is not quite right with this place. Being frozen in time gave it an eerie, “Twilight Zone” kinda quality. The sweet, idyllic exterior masked the secrets and dangers lurking beneath. As the story progressed, the world shifted with Lit’s journey. His surroundings change depending on the challenges I needed him to face.
What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?
Some of the key themes I wanted to incorporate were those integral to the story. Forgotten Realm of Secrets is not just a fantasy fiction novel. Themes of self-discovery, coming of age, adventure, mystery, and courage were important. Lit’s journey is not just a physical one, but an emotional and personal journey where he faces the unknown, uncovers hidden truths about himself, and grows in ways he never expected. These themes are woven throughout the story, as Lit learns to confront each challenge with bravery and courage, while discovering what he is truly made of.
At the beginning, Lit is a homesick boy, who was very dependent on his parents and siblings. But as the story progresses and he starts to fend for himself, though he never stops missing them, he realizes that he has the ability to survive on his own. In that vein, the theme of love and support from his family, as well as dear friends, was important to express because it contributed to his growth.
Even though Lit never stops missing his loved ones, he knew from the start that by choosing to leave home and take on this quest, he risked never seeing them again—something that almost made him reconsider. But in the end, he made the decision to have the courage to follow his heart. Lit believed that if he succeeds in his quest, he might one day find his way back to his family—not as the uncertain, unhappy boy who had always wondered where he fit in, but as a happier, more fulfilled young man. He no longer wanted to be the mope who had spent so much time feeling lost and out of place at home. Instead, he wanted to return with a clearer sense of who he was and the confidence that he had discovered his true self and maybe his true home.
Is this the first book in the series? If so, when is the next book coming out, and what can your fans expect in the next story?
Yes, Forgotten Realm of Secrets is the first book in the series. Book Two is expected to hit book shelves around early 2025. Things really heat up in the next installment as Lit who is now seasoned and toughened by his experiences, faces even bigger challenges, and the threats are more terrifying.
Lit’s already been through a lot, and in this next part of his journey, he’s determined not to give up. He’s ready to take the risks and push forward to reach his ultimate goal—to find wisdom, discover where he fits in, and uncover the secrets that have been kept hidden from him. But will he?
At this point, Lit has gained a new level of confidence. He’s not just surviving—he’s realized he enjoys the journey he has embarked upon. Even though the world around him is full of unknowns, supernatural and life threatening situations, it’s a journey he never could have imagined.
In the next book, readers can expect to meet even more strange and intriguing characters, some alive and some not, along with immersive worlds, strange phenomena, and ancient artifacts. Lit’s journey is far from over, and it’s going to challenge him in ways he never imagined.

Sanctuary of the DarkLight
Posted by Literary Titan

Sanctuary of the Darklight, the third installment in Eric B’s Night Crusaders series, picks up two years after a cataclysmic alien invasion of Draeghan, a province now led by a group known as Fight for Right. Under their rule, Draegahr City thrives, but a cloud of mistrust hangs over the province. The citizens grow increasingly suspicious as Fight for Right monopolizes the alien technology left behind after the invasion, refusing to share its secrets. Early in the book, we meet ROID, a mysterious figure, and the Night Crusaders, a team of half-alien superheroes who oppose the menacing Darklight. This dynamic immediately sets the stage for an engrossing and unpredictable narrative, as these characters clash in a world shaped by alien remnants and political intrigue.
The first chapter hooked me with a sharply written dialogue between Greg and Darius. I found Darius infuriating, likely by design, with his oversized ego and smarmy charm. He’s clearly meant to evoke strong reactions, and in my case, he succeeded. Meanwhile, Greg stood out as a far more complex character. When he dismissed psychology as “witchcraft,” I couldn’t help but laugh, though I also felt an immediate sense of pity for him, a feeling that deepened as the story unfolded. I especially loved the diary-style structure of the book, with references to specific dates and seasons grounding the narrative. It provides a rich historical context for Draeghan, offering readers the second half of the province’s tumultuous history.
Eric B exceeded my expectations with his well-crafted storytelling and world-building. That said, the erotic scenes’ abruptness disrupted the flow, leaving them feeling less polished compared to the rest of the narrative. Aside from that, the novel is packed with everything a fan of dystopian fantasy could want, dragons, demons, wizards, and a web of deception where different factions vie for control.
Sanctuary of the Darklight delivers an immersive, action-packed addition to the Night Crusaders series, blending elements of science fiction, fantasy, and dystopian intrigue with compelling characters and rich world-building. The novel excels in its ability to captivate readers with its unpredictable plot, complex moral conflicts, and a future that feels both fantastical and unsettlingly relatable. Eric B’s storytelling left me eager for more.

The Hound (The Phoenix Chronicles Book 1)
Posted by Literary Titan

Joseph G Topp’s The Hound (The Phoenix Chronicles Book 1) immerses readers into Maltoer, a vibrant new world brimming with unique creatures and a distinct hierarchy. From the very first page, the land’s complexity and richness are palpable, setting the stage for an epic fantasy adventure unlike any other. At the heart of the story is Tynarr, an eighteen-year-old who has known only the chains of slavery. Haunted by the loss of close friends, he embarks on a perilous journey to uncover his true powers and delve into his family’s mysterious past in a magic-filled realm. Trust does not come easily to him, yet he must learn to rely on others. Along his path, we meet characters like Verja, Tynarr’s former lesser master, who becomes an unexpected ally in the fight against the Speaker, an evil immortal determined to engulf Maltoer in darkness and chaos.
Topp excels in world-building, meticulously crafting Maltoer’s complex history and societal structures. Detailed descriptions of characters, cities, and creatures enrich the narrative, ensuring readers are never lost in this expansive universe. This level of detail demonstrates the author’s dedication to creating a believable and immersive world, a feat not always achieved in fantasy literature. While Tynarr’s journey is the primary focus, the narrative occasionally shifts to other characters, providing a broader perspective of the world and its inhabitants. This technique adds depth to the story; however, a deeper exploration of these characters would enhance the reader’s connection to them. The rapid pacing, brimming with action and significant events, sometimes leads to a disconnect between the intense fighting scenes and their emotional repercussions on the characters. Yet, for those who relish thrilling combat sequences, the book offers plenty of adrenaline-pumping moments.
The Hound (The Phoenix Chronicles Book 1) holds immense potential to become a formidable presence in the fantasy genre. Topp’s ability to weave a complex world with engaging narratives is promising. I eagerly await the next installment to discover where Tynarr’s journey leads, as this is merely the beginning of an epic saga.

Worldmaker of Yand-Yildun
Posted by Literary Titan

Worldmaker of Yand-Yildun by Andri E. Elia takes us to the planet Yand, orbiting the star Yildun, where Yanara, a powerful spellcaster known as the Worldmaker, must defend her world from the menacing K’tul, an intergalactic invader. The story intricately weaves themes of love, loss, and the responsibilities that come with immense power, all while introducing a rich cast of characters, including Yanara’s daughter, who is just beginning to manifest her own inherited abilities. As threats loom, Yanara is not only challenged by external forces but also by the complexities of her personal life, especially her relationships and her desire to protect her family.
From the start, I was struck by the depth of Yanara’s character and her multifaceted nature. She is powerful, yet vulnerable, particularly when it comes to her family. The narrative begins with a rich backstory, laying a solid foundation for the events that unfold. I found the early exploration of Yanara’s internal struggles compelling, especially her reflections on her marriages and her longing to start a family. These personal conflicts made Yanara relatable despite her extraordinary abilities, and they added a layer of emotional depth to the story. The planet Yand, with its empathic, winged humanoids and their intricate societal norms, is vividly depicted. I particularly enjoyed the scenes that highlighted the contrast between Yanara’s immense power and the everyday struggles of life on Yand. The descriptions of the landscape, the technology, and the unique cultural elements of the Yandar people were immersive, drawing me deeper into this fantastical world. The illustrations, particularly those by Lily Dormishev, beautifully complement the narrative, capturing the essence of Yand’s unique environment and its inhabitants.
Elia’s writing is both evocative and engaging. It has moments of intense action balanced by introspective passages. I appreciated the seamless blend of science fiction and fantasy elements which kept the story unpredictable and fresh. The inclusion of LGBTQIA+ themes, particularly in the depiction of Yanara’s relationships, felt natural and added a contemporary touch to the classic hero’s journey.
Worldmaker of Yand-Yildun is a captivating start to a trilogy that will appeal to fans of both sci-fi and fantasy. It is a book for those who enjoy stories rich in character development, world-building and complex themes. I recommend it to readers who appreciate layered narratives and aren’t afraid to dive into a world as complex as the characters that inhabit it.
