A Long Night Cry

In the illustrious wake of two previous masterpieces, Terry Weaver once again proves his literary prowess with his third installment, A Long Night Cry, in the highly acclaimed Eli Ridge detective series. For aficionados of suspenseful police procedurals, intricately woven criminal mysteries, electrifying thrillers, and narratives that unmask the complexities of vigilante justice, getting acquainted with the character of Eli Ridge is an absolute must.

Weaver’s tale delves into a poignant exploration of contemporarily pressing issues, including murder, kidnapping, drug cartels, systemic corruption, and the debilitating impact of emotionally distant families. The plot thickens as three teenage girls — a Mexican immigrant, a senator’s daughter, and her intimate friend — mysteriously disappear. While societal and political pressures force Ridge to primarily focus on locating the senator’s daughter, he staunchly believes that every victim warrants an equal amount of concern and investigative rigor. This moral compass leads him down a treacherous path, as his pursuit of justice threatens his career and endangers those closest to him.

The author’s exemplary storytelling swiftly ensnares readers in a maelstrom of suspense, emotional turmoil, and an ever-growing anticipation of the narrative’s next development. Weaver’s adroit narrative techniques serve to augment the story’s suspense as each chapter delves deeper into the narrative, cleverly piecing together the mystery surrounding the missing girls and keeping readers on edge. In particular, Eli Ridge’s character will likely resonate with many as we share in his struggles and emotional descent triggered by the escalating events, creating a deep connection that echoes long after the final page.

A Long Night Cry is a thoroughly engaging read that stands as a testament to Weaver’s talent for suspense. For those unacquainted with the Eli Ridge series, fear not, as this book can certainly be enjoyed as a standalone novel. However, the reading experience will undoubtedly be enriched if you’ve had the pleasure of delving into the earlier works, namely A Dark Day in Texas and Whitewashed Tomb. A Long Night Cry is a truly captivating narrative that is entirely worth your time.

A Bit of Truth Mixed Into Fiction

C.A. Simonson Author Interview

Rock Band Roadie follows a sixteen-year-old girl growing up in the projects who dreams of becoming a singer in a band, only to have her dream become a nightmare. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

I played the keyboard in the gospel rock band called Cross Road Band. The first couple of chapters were taken from real-life events, which set up the story.

Some events in the book were chillingly similar to real-life events. Did you take any inspiration from real life when developing this book?

Yes, the prison riot was a true event. I was one of the keyboardists who hid behind the curtain until it was over (but no one was kidnapped or escaped in the real event). The events in Patterson were also true. The projects and the park where we played as well as the occurrences written about it were true. We often had other teenagers come along (‘roadies’ if you will) to help pass out literature or help set up. The band traveled to maximum security prisons and juvenile detention centers to sing and play and then stayed in communication with a number of the inmates.

What was one of the hardest parts of Rock Band Roadie for you to write?

Probably the hardest part was staging the prison escape and making it believable. I consulted with a policeman and a military judge for details and accuracy. This started out as a short story and evolved into a book through the advice of these men. And the title is always one of the hardest tasks for me.

What is the next book that you are working on, and when will it be available?

There are a couple I’m mulling around in my head at this point. One will be a coming-of-age story about a pre-teen boy who migrates to the USA in search of his father.

The other will be about a child who yearns for a magic dress that will keep her from disappearing like her friend did. A story of terrible secrets of child trafficking.

When will they be available? Hopefully by fall of 2024

From the moment Jemma heard the first song, she was intrigued. Drawn in by the hard rock style, she swayed to the music. She yearned to be on stage too, dressed in leathers and sequins, holding a microphone and belting out tunes. But life in the projects detained that dream with a drugged-out mom and an overbearing, controlling boyfriend.

Through a few twists and turns, Jemma overcomes her trauma as her dream is about to come true. Tonight she will sing with the band in a maximum security prison. Nerves on edge as she walks to the stage, she senses a man’s eyes following her every move. When the lights suddenly die, a riot breaks out and panic erupts. Cowering in the darkness, Jemma’s scream is stifled when an oily hand clasps her mouth shut and drags her into the deep bowels of the prison.

All she wanted to do was sing — she didn’t plan on being kidnapped and part of a getaway plan. Will she be able to talk her way out this time, or was she in on it the whole time?

Rock Band Roadie

Immersed in a profound love for music and the allure of the stage, Jemma finds solace in witnessing her favorite band perform the songs that resonate with her soul. Yet, her life is far from idyllic. Growing up in the projects, amidst the struggles of an addicted mother and a controlling boyfriend, Jemma knows all too well that dreams seldom manifest in such an environment. However, a chance encounter with Annie alters the trajectory of her existence.

Within the pages of the poignant yet inspiring novel, Rock Band Roadie by C.A. Simonson, we are intimately drawn into Jemma’s arduous journey. Unfolding through a traumatic event that thrusts her into a perilous situation, the narrative unearths the profound growth and coming-of-age of this resilient young woman. Despite projecting maturity, the author artfully reminds us that Jemma remains a sixteen-year-old adolescent.

The narrative style captivated me deeply. From the outset, we are apprised that this compelling story is grounded in real-life experiences, lending an added layer of impact to the tale. Skillfully alternating between the perspectives of Jemma and her boyfriend, Jimmy, the dual point of view enriches the narrative, allowing us to witness events from both sides before converging into a climactic moment at the story’s end. The prose flows effortlessly, making it a quick and engrossing read. One drawback I observed in the book was its brevity towards the conclusion. The story left me yearning for approximately 50 more pages to provide a more complete resolution. Notwithstanding this minor setback, the novel’s conclusion left a lasting impression on me. The story’s impact and emotional resonance more than compensated for the slight drawback, making it a compelling and memorable read.

Rock Band Roadie‘s ability to evoke emotions and immerse readers in the world of its characters is commendable, making it a compelling and worthwhile read.

The Martinsens’ family friend, Wayne, also plays a pivotal role in the quest to reclaim Rose, further solidifying the sense of camaraderie and unity within the story.

A notable strength of the narrative is the character development of Rose herself. The Hidden Lives of Dick & Mary

The Hidden Lives of Dick and Mary by Xavier Poe Kane is a compelling compilation of two paranormal novellas – Haunted Houses and The Tale of Mary Deacon. The author takes readers on a supernatural journey through the eyes of a ghost hunter and medium, Dick Fisher, who uses his gifts to help the dead while uncovering hidden tales of haunted houses. At Jefferson Barracks base, Fisher and his team encounter both friendly and terrifying spirits, leading to the discovery of the base’s history and the true nature of the spirits.

Meanwhile, The Tale of Mary Deacon follows Mary’s lifelong dream of going to space, but her wish begins to come true in strange and unexpected ways. She finds herself the target of alien abductions and must learn to trust the right people if she wants them to stop. Again, Kane weaves historical elements into this suspenseful novella, making it all the more fascinating.

Kane’s vivid language throughout the book radiates a rightful creeping sensation that will capture the reader’s attention. Both novellas take place in Missouri, but in different time frames, with the first focusing on the existence of ghosts and the second on aliens. The author skillfully weaves historical facts about Jefferson Barracks base with fictional ghost stories, giving the crew’s adventures a realistic touch. Even though many questions were left unanswered, the book is a fast-paced read filled with suspense and mystery. The interconnections between the two novellas are also amusing and will leave readers wondering what other connections may be waiting to be discovered.

The Hidden Lives of Dick and Mary is a spell-binding page-turner with a slightly peculiar cast of characters and a gripping plot that will captivate supernatural fans. Kane’s unique perspective on the prospect of alien abduction in The Tale of Mary Deacon adds an eccentric touch to the second novella, making it all the more suspenseful.

Broken Chains

Will she be able to handle the unexpected turn in events, or will the mountain of trouble she’s about to face be too great for her to overcome?

Broken Chains by Karina Kantas tells the story of an aspiring writer, Elizabeth Finley, who’s had it hard with life. Losing her mother at a very tender age and having her father disappear right after meant Liz was left with no other choice but to fend for herself. However, instead of getting better, her life transforms from bad to worse when she begins working undercover for the MI5. However, the rigorous mind-blowing training she would be subjected to at the MI5 will be nothing compared to the hell she will face after she receives a coded email that only she could decipher.

Karina Kantas has done a great job creating a unique storyline filled with twists and suspense. The extreme depiction of the reality of the underworld was incredibly mind-blowing, and the story had me on edge from the turn of the first page. However, I found the book a little rushed. The loopholes in the story made some of the characters’ emotions too intense and sometimes confusing. But the Eccentricity of this book kept me on my toes.

Broken chains by Karina Kantas is a thrilling crime romance filled with suspense and action. With crime rings, kidnapping and abuse, readers will never be at a loss for action. The novel has graphic and mature scenes, so it is intended for a mature audience.

Kaleidoscopic Shades

Kaleidoscopic Shades: Within Black Eternity by David A. Neuman is an exciting new supernatural thriller that readers will be drawn into from the opening pages. Kaleidoscopic Shades has enough plot twists and turns to keep readers guessing and on edge. What seems to be a simple book about a small town experiencing a strange case of mass hysteria turns into something very different.

The children of Corona, California, are having nightmares. Nightmares mean none of them are sleeping, and spend the day in a haze. The weird part? They all have the same nightmare every night. The story follows Bob Triplow and his son Joshua as they attempt to stop the nightmares plaguing their friends and family. This leads them through a journey in time and space where they visit hellish dimensions, battle ancient monsters, and are brought to the very edges of sanity. In the end, Bob and Joshua will make decisions that could make or unmake the very existence of their universe and everyone in it.

The high point of Neuman’s writing is his character building. He excels at writing likable, everyday characters who are thrown into very unreal circumstances. His depiction of Joshua and his friends reminded me of Stephen King at his best. Likewise, his world-building is heavily reminiscent of King’s work, especially the Dark Tower series. This style of writing allows readers to feel like they really know the characters giving them an added investment in seeing what happens to them in the end.

Neuman’s pacing is another highlight. The book is a slow-burner but not dull. He spends plenty of time setting up the Triplow family before throwing them into hell. Sometimes mind-bending themes like alternate universes and time travel are handled excellently. If you’re a fan of supernatural thrillers you’ll be right at home. I can not recommend Kaleidoscopic Shades: Within Black Eternity enough. Any fan of supernatural thrillers and science fiction time travel will love it and may have found a new favorite author.

End it By the Gun

End it By the Gun by [Obi, Kenechukwu]

Ken Obi’s latest novel End It By The Gun features charismatic and determined Beck, who’s eagerness to get a top book deal and offer for a screen play, ruins his life. The book delves into Beck’s past, his relationships with women and writing and his latest novel. It is full of dynamic relationships with both women and men, family ordeals and political strife. There’s even a spattering of nature. The novel cannot be simply put into one genre as it ventures into fantasy, political thriller and drama, so there’s bound to be a part that everyone can enjoy.

The book can be split into two parts – the first half is about Beck and his life, his dream to become a famous writer and his relationships. The second half is his eleventh novel which features Abdoullah, Farouk, and Murktar and their deadly pathogen V1B6F3.

The first half is characterized by tumultuous relationships, between Beck and his family and women. It has a fast-paced style with a masculine tone and lots of underlying energy in the short chapters. There are twists and turns constantly occurring in the chapters that jump around different time periods in Beck’s life. He experiences strange meetings, fame and kidnapping. This style of writing is inviting and leaves the reader wanting more.

However, I felt that some parts the book were awkwardly written – “I read that to mean that he must have thought I had given up on dashing away”, and I thought that it could be overly descriptive for a book that means to move quickly. I also felt that there was a lack of sympathy for women in the book – Beck’s wife is made out to be crazy with no explanation, and his agent has no name for most of the narrative.

The second part of the book begins in a way reminiscent of a zombie apocalypse. This is the book that makes Beck famous. It has a science versus nature theme which ultimately turns political, alongside this runs the age-old battle between good and evil. The nature aspect of it focuses on an area called Shonga, which is untouched by humans. This part is the gem of the book and where the writing style really works. The vivid descriptions of the forest and way of life offer a rich picture which makes the reader long to be in nature with the characters, away from their urban lifestyles.

The characters in the second half of the book are presented in a linear fashion which evokes a level of understanding which is not present in the first half of the text. The characters in this part are all from different walks of life, which goes to show how many people can influence an event.

I thought that the tone of the book is inviting, quick and full of energy and I think many people would enjoy the interesting characters and fresh perspectives.
