The Spiritual Healing

Heidi McKendrick Author Interview

Secrets of Broken Pottery challenges readers view of God and how they think he seems them. Why was this an important book for you to write?

Growing up in a legalistic, performance-focused church community distorted my idea of God, the Great Potter, for three decades. Looking back, it is nothing short of a miracle that I never lost not only the Potter but also the broken pieces of my life that scattered when my clay pottery broke. My broken pottery falling into the Great Potter’s loving hands is why I wrote this book. I want to share the secrets I’ve learned about Him and my position as His pottery. No pieces of your brokenness are wasted when the Great Potter collects the fragments and takes them to the Potter’s House.

In the book, God is referred to as a potter. How did the idea for this metaphor come about?

The Bible compares us with clay fashioned by the Great Potter Himself (Isaiah 64:8).

What were some ideas that were important for you to explore in this book?

Secrets of Broken Pottery is about broken lives – broken clay pots, and their spiritual healing. Potteries crushed, shattered, cracked, smashed, crumbled, distorted, fractured, and demolished. Ruinations for every imaginable reason. Within this book, I hope, the reader will learn the Great Potter’s plan – how He holds all His clay together. I hope they will learn about His characteristics; His unconditional love, never-ending grace, and faithfulness to the generations. He will never forsake His potteries and He is always in charge of your restoration and reinstation. This book is not about a prosperity gospel or legalistic performance-focused gospel, and it does not promise that problems and brokenness will disappear if only you have enough faith, or do this and avoid that. Instead, this book is about the Great Potter, our Redeemer, who wants a relationship with His vessels of clay. Secrets of Broken Pottery – finding the blessings and spiritual growth in our brokenness.

What do you hope is one thing readers take away from your book?

The book challenges the reader to reflect and re-consider their image of God, the Great Potter, the way they see Him, and the way they think He sees them. As broken pottery we are not only perfectly safe and loved in the Great Potter’s hands, but also cherished. We are loved with the divine love that surrounds our clay pottery inside and out. We are His most beautiful and precious pottery!

I hope the reader will claim for themselves the following truth:

  • Even if I am marred or broken and destroyed, the Great Potter will start all over again¾He will make something new.
  • He will launch a good process, and He will never give up on me – He will see it to the end.
  • None of my broken pieces go wasted.
  • There is strength in broken pottery…

I wish the readers will have the most therapeutic and beautiful process on the Great Potter’s table! I hope they will be fully integrated with His unconditional and unfailing love and never-ending grace!

The Breedline Series

Shana Congrove Author Interview

The Immortal follows an artists who’s attacked by a creature that infects her with a virus that threatens to turn her if she succumbs to the bloodlust. What was the inspiration for the setup to your story?

In all my Breedline novels, there are situations where my characters are faced with good vs. evil, similar to the world we live today. Unfortunately, in the real world, between good and evil, “the bad guys” are sometimes the conquerors. But in my Breedline fantasy world, good always proves more powerful than their opposing evil forces. Although my characters face their share of trials and tribulations along the way, it’s important to give my readers that fairytale ending where the “good guys” always prevails in the end.

Jena is an intriguing and well developed character. What were some driving ideals behind her character’s development?

It was important for me to create a strong female character who isn’t waiting for her “knight and shining armor” to be rescued. Although she does have a supporting character to help her along the way, Jena finds her own way to overcome the dangers—which are very terrifying and unimaginable—that are fast closing in.

What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?

The Immortal introduces new characters to my Breedline series who are “undead” and also stem from the eighteenth-century. So, with that in mind, I definitely had to put on my A-game. I love that time period, so creating characters from that era gave me that extra inspiration to do my best.

What is the next book that you are working on and when will it be available?

The next Novel of the Breedline series, The Curse, will be available in early 2022. Next in line for the Novels of the Breedline series include: Living Nightmares, and The Vampires in Manhattan.

Power and Wisdom of the Word

Author Interview
Lawrence Keller Author Interview

Bible Verses to Remember and Meditate on for Inner Peace provides readers with 150 Bible verses that inspire faith and love. Why was this an important book for you to write?

I believe in the power and wisdom of the word of God. Many of us can easily remember and bring famous books’ or films’ quotes and song lyrics to mind. Although the Bible is found invaluable by Christians and valuable by some non-religious people, most of us may not be able to quote more than a few verses. Also, we are in a time where positive affirmations are given a lot of value to turn our lives around positively. I believe the word of God has the power to do that in ways humanly impossible

What is your favorite Bible verse from this book?

My favorite Bible verse is 1Cor 13:8, “Love never fails.” God is love. Everything and everyone around us may fail us, even ourselves, but God never fails. He goes even beyond to do above what we think or imagine.

What were some themes that were important for you to capture with these verses?

The themes that I thought essential to capture were some of God’s attributes: His mercy, His love, His faithfulness, His power, and the promises He makes to those who love and serve Him. The Bible verses have been grouped under one of those categories. Love, mercy, faithfulness, and power have many facets, and I wanted to show that there was a demonstration of that love, mercy, faithfulness, and power in each verse under each category.

What is one thing you hope readers take away from your book?

I want readers to come to a better understanding of the immensity of God’s love, mercy, power, faithfulness, and the magnitude of His promises. I would like them to come to realize that no other words have more wisdom and power than the words divinely inspired by God and imprinted in the Bible. That storing them in their hearts is the best investment they could make to grow spiritually, bringing peace, joy, love, strength, and wisdom in their lives, the true treasures.

Chastity is Me

Holly Brandon
Holly Brandon Author Interview

Life in the Chastity Zone follows a woman’s dashed fairytale life once her fiancé dumps her, and she’s thrown into the wild world of dating. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

My inspiration came from real-life events. My fiancé unexpectedly dumped me. Instead of being devastated, I turned lemons into lemonade and wrote about it. Few of the characters are mergers of two or more men that I’ve met in my past. I must say that I’ve met unique men who left an unforgettable impression on me. I was a senior in high school when I encountered my first adventure with a man I secretly labeled Montana Man. He was tall, dark, and handsome, and I was terrified of flying. It didn’t help that I left on a Delta flight from one of the most dangerous airports because of its topography and weather conditions. I was scared to death. I can still picture him coming up to me in the airport, his smell, his aura, everything, and then those few little words that took me off guard, “I want to sit next to you on the plane.” He was, I’d say, “what dreams are made of,” except that he was a facade—the cover was beautiful, but the inside was a seedy, tainted nightmare. And so began my adventures, which later I put on paper.

Chase is an interesting and well-developed character. What were some driving ideals behind your character’s development?

Chastity is me. I learned a long time ago that it’s worth waiting and fighting for all good things. I wanted readers to see a character who has everything thrown at her but then decides to stick to her guns and fights. In the process, she may come out bruised, but she’s stronger—a survivor.

What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?

The one lesson and theme I hope everyone will see is that you can overcome any obstacle thrown your way if you fight hard enough. And never, ever let anyone tell you that your ideas and beliefs are crazy and ridiculous because that’s what makes us all so unique and special. Marriage is extraordinary, and waiting for the right man is worth it, even if you’re a thirty-year-old virgin.

What is the next book that you are working on, and when will it be available?

The next book I am working on is Nothing’s As It Seems, the sequel to Life in the Chastity Zone. Readers can expect to find out what happened to Grant, Vincent, and Jacques-Pierre. They can also expect to see Chastity dive into the working force and the struggles that come with being a woman in a man’s world. There are a lot of unexpected twists and turns in the next book. Can a decision from years ago hinder Chastity’s destiny, or will her blind trust in love lead to a day of reckoning? Find out the answers and more in Nothing’s As It Seems, coming very soon.

Between the madness and the metaphysical, what unfolds in more bizarre than anything Chase could ever imagine.

Mysteries and Magic

Charlene McIver
Charlene McIver Author Interview

The Mysterious Pool follows a group of friends who uncover secrets in an hold house that send them on a wild adventure. What was the inspiration for the setup to your story?

As a child I’ve always loved reading stories on mysteries and magic as most children do, and as did my late son, Leigh. So he is foremost in this adventure with his friends.

I enjoyed how authentic the children felt in your story. What were some driving ideals behind your character’s development?

Of course, Leigh relates to my late son and the other characters, Tara and Cosmo are losely based around his real life friends. The persona of the characters are carried over from my picture book series, Leigh’s Wheelie Adventures. Aimed for the younger reader, these little stories carry an important message on how life in a wheelchair can have its challenges.

What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?

Apart from keeping “The Mysterious Pool” fun, adventureous and enlighting, it carries an important message thoroughout the story – to instil confidence in children, particularly for those with limited mobility. I hope this is achieved after reading the story and they come away with a positive outlook and an appetite to learn more.

What is the next book that you are working on and when will it be available?

Book 2 in “Leigh’s Wheelie Adventures” will be out this year (2021). Again it will carry an important message.
There will be three books in this series, each covering different aspects wheelchair users have overcoming a particular problem.

I Really Love Tragic Stories

Zachary Ryan Author Interview

Playlist follows two people with a tragic past that help each other heal and find a way forward. What was the inspiration for the setup to your story?

Romeo and Juliet were the biggest inspiration for this novel. I really love tragic stories, and I wanted there to be some beauty in it. I wanted this novel to matter.

Your characters are wonderfully emotive and relatable. Were you able to use anything from your own life to inform their character development?

I always will add an Easter egg or two of my own life into a novel. But honestly, I create this characters from so where in my brain, and I follow them around. I find out things they do as the reader does too.

What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?

Love, lost, self-worth, and how to work on overcoming tragedy. I think we all can easily get consumed into the darkness. I wanted to make sure people could
Come out of it.

What is the next book that you are working on and when will it be available?

I have a book coming out called Camp Afterlife. It’s another coming of age LGBT novel. It will be out October.

Music had always gotten Sarabeth through the struggles of her life. When she sat behind a piano, it was her at her purest form. Too many tragedies caused the once overused piano keys to collect dust. She was no longer the singing canary that her father always called her.Sarabeth didn’t know if she would ever be able to use her voice again, but then came Logan, who sat next to her in their English seminar; the cocky guy with his own fair share of tragedies that he was trying to run away from. Can these two help each other break free of the scars that imprisoned them, or would they end up like Romeo and Juliet?

The Consciousness of Bud Megargee

Bud Megargee
Bud Megargee Author Interview

Soul Afterlife shares your personal journey and the discoveries you have made along the way. What were some key ideas that you wanted to explore in this book?

That is an excellent question. Over a ten-year period, I noted more than a few explanations regarding the meaning of the phrase, “spirit of man”. It was, in part, an attempt to clarify the mind/body/spirit treatment concepts that were expressed in the psychiatric/behavioral health hospital industry. I explored medical, psychological, traditional religious, as well as philosophical justifications for using the word “spirit” – both in the positive and negative. In addition, I studied at a Taiwanese Buddhist monastery in Northern Virginia to understand deep-thinking Eastern philosophical views of the subject of human consciousness. At this holy place, I was introduced to the Buddhist/Sanskrit doctrine of anatman, also described with the Pali term anatta. My Buddhist friends argued that nothing is constant, everything changes through time – that we all have a constantly fluctuating stream of consciousness. In essence, there is no underlying substance that can be called a human soul or an independently fixed spirit.

I was conflicted over this when comparing it to everything that I was discovering. My latest book – “Soul Afterlife -Beyond the Near-Death Experience” – begins by documenting this debate: How can I bring into focus the Buddhist doctrine of anatman in the middle of everything I was uncovering? Ultimately, it required the discipline to look beyond obvious explanations – to remove the veil that seemingly walled in my superficial understanding. Only then could I begin to balance the scales concerning what was behind my continuation – that which I understand to be the consciousness of Bud Megargee.

My key ideas or strategies to explore all of this were:

First, if I place aside the doctrine of anatman, can I find my answers to the “spirit of man,” outside traditional interpretations of the human spirit and in a metaphysical account of what a soul and soul life might look like?

Second, in taking such a voyage I wanted companions – I did not want to travel alone. I wanted readers to become “co-pilots” and journey along with me into uncharted waters to challenging the authenticity of what we all have been taught about a life, death and our consciousness. The only requirements and tools that would be required? Our questions.

Have your spiritual ideas changed or evolved after your time studying at Wat Yaranna Rangsee?

I do not think that they have changed or evolved in dramatic fashion. Perhaps they simply have been categorically enhanced. Let me explain: My Buddhist monastery experience has not been one of deep philosophical enlightenment. Rather, I would classify it as settling on what “core” life beliefs, insights, and actions are essential to whom I have chosen to grow into. The voyage to become deeply self-aware is a weighty challenge. I found that Vipassana meditation – the dedication to self-examination and observation – provided the impetus to consider what I might need to change or adjust to become less flawed.

Confronting the notion that we are significantly more than we can imagine requires the courage to be self-forgiving, less imperfect and more compassionately aware. Perhaps, upon reflection, they would be the spiritual changes I would comfortably recognize.

What is one piece of advice you wish someone had given you before studying at the Buddhist Monastery?

I do not believe that there is a standard training pamphlet that exists prior to visiting a monastery but, here are several of my observations.

I remember initially standing in the entrance to the morning meditation room frozen by the level of respect that was on display between the monks, nuns and early morning visitors. Fashioned within the sounds of chanting and the periodic sound of the striking of an ancient bell, attentive monastic individuals were seeking the challenge of hunting for a moment of sincere enlightenment. Concentration, empathy and understanding are not just expressions for belonging within a Buddhist community. They are the needed building blocks for a heedful way of living.

So, to answer your question more directly – I would like to have been more prepared to understand that I would be an eyewitness to the heart of monastery attentiveness. That laced between the hum of an Om mantra, I would uncover the focused concentration necessary to grasp that, absent of my ego, I am more than I could possibly imagine.

What is the next book that you are working on and when will it be available?

For the record, in the beginning, I never intended to write or publish anything as unconventional as life within the spirit world. Yet, with five alternative memoirs now in publication, including “Soul Afterlife – Beyond the near-Death Experience”, I am in the middle of organizing a sixth.

One theme that is universal throughout my mystical narrative accounts is the storybook temperament and collaboration of all energy. Within the literary limitations of “Soul Sins,” “Soul Mechanics,” “Soul Imprints,” and “Soul Afterlife,” there is an interconnection of energy with the natural elements that shape how we eventually act as a community.

It is becoming increasingly clear that stockpiled energy defines specific outcomes – individually, ecologically or within the intimate fabric of our society. As a result, I have begun to examine a detailed spiritual explanation of how the roles of water, fire, earth and air affects all life.

In “The Chaotic Energy of the Soul” I knowingly engulf my mystical narratives into the turbulence created by positive and negative chaos. Not everything that we experience is tilted toward disorder, but we need human warriors – those individuals who possess the indispensable energy to actively set the scales within nature’s basic elements, and in doing so, ensure that we all live inside a balanced world.

“The Chaotic Energy of the Soul” will be available in paperback, eBook and audiobook formats beginning Spring 2022.

Since the dawn of time, human beings have asked the seemingly unanswerable question: what happens when we die?

And saints and sages throughout the ages have given their interpretation of what awaits us on the other side.

But few have taken this inquiry as far as Bud Megargee, a corporate-executive-turned-soul-explorer whose latest book explores in exquisite detail the mechanics of what happens to our souls before, during, and after our lives on earth.

Megargee’s questioning started decades ago as a psychology grad student when he found himself listening to a man in a hospital bed describe his near-death experience. The story was powerful enough to make Bud — who was raised Catholic and later became a practicing Buddhist — consider the existence of a soul and thus, an afterlife.

Driven by extreme curiosity and his growing belief that we are more than what we can imagine, Bud began searching for answers.

He found them, and then shared his discoveries with the world through his books.

From the award-winning author of five unconventional spiritual memoirs comes Megargee’s latest book in the series, Soul Afterlife: Beyond the Near Death Experience. Through a series of dialogues with “a voice from the beyond”, we bear witness to his thought-provoking questions, the detailed and unorthodox answers he receives, and his attempt to come to terms with them. The book tosses conventional understanding of what happens when we die to the wayside to tackle tough questions about the near-death experiences so many have witnessed and lived to tell:

What exactly does the soul think, feel and experience once it’s through the spinning tunnel?
How long does it stay there?
Does it undergo a life review of sorts?
Where exactly does the tunnel lead?
Is reincarnation next and, if so, how does it work?

Each conversation is detailed and complex, but through our guide’s capable telling of this otherworldly life of the soul, we are free to grasp onto as much as our egos dare to allow. Megargee makes no pretenses and is quick to point out his own skepticism, but it’s that rare sense of honest uncertainty from a corporate-executive-turned-spiritual-voyager that is so refreshing for anyone who remains open-minded and curious about what comes next.

A Crime Against Humanity

Lucia Mann
Lucia Mann Author Interview

Weeping Goes Unheard provides a detailed account of the atrocities Canada has inflicted on indigenous people. What inspired you to write a book on this topic?

I was inspired to write Weeping Goes Unheard after I came across one of the numerous old journalism notebooks, marked ‘Racial profiling in Canada that was gathering dust in my basement cellar. I had a bad time trying to decipher my notes that were shorthand scribbled. I have long forgotten this technique and had to take a refresher course! But I’m so glad I did because nothing justifies the racial genocide of Canadian Indigenous Peoples.

What is the biggest obstacle indigenous people face in seeking recognition of these atrocities from the Canadian government?

Genuine acknowledgment of wrongdoing (past and present) because “sorry” is as hollow as a drum coming from the Canadian government and religious officials who hide in foxholes of protection and denial.

What can people do to support indigenous people today?

Write to their First Nations Chiefs and tell them that you hear them, feel their anguish and what can you do to help. I did by telling their story that will keep echoing in my heart forever and hopefully many more caring humans will after they have read Weeping Goes Unheard. Let politicians know that it is unacceptable, a crime against humanity, to treat their citizens so shamefully.

I appreciate the fantastic research that went into this book. Was there anything that surprised you while researching this book?

As a seasoned journalist, nothing normally surprises me, but the overwhelming vast numbers of dead and missing Indigenous women who didn’t get the same intense criminal investigation as a non-Indigenous person was indeed eyebrow-raising not to mention the small-pox-infected blankets intended to wipe off the original owners of Canada.

A Historical Record Attesting to the Heartless and Brutal Atrocities of Canada’s Indigenous People
Weeping Goes Unheard educates and highlights those unfamiliar with Canada’s shady history in its treatment of native people. This comprehensive narrative presents their heartbreak and how they endeavored, failed, tried again and again to live together peacefully and equally with the non-Indigenous population. These accounts demonstrate that there can be no peace and harmony unless there’s equal justice for all.
Lucia Mann records the harrowing personal stories of racial genocide on the part of European settlers, which ultimately led to creating the abhorrent “Indian Act”—now 144 years old. This law paved the way for other subsequent immoral treatment of Canada’s indigenous people. Weeping Goes Unheard represents a long overdue look at tragic circumstances that have been existing in the shadows for far too long.
