The Lady of the Mirrored Lake
Posted by Literary Titan

The Lady of the Mirrored Lake by Jennifer Ivy Walker is the exciting sequel to The Wild Rose and the Sea Raven. It follows our heroines, Tristian, a disgraced knight, and Issylte, a powerful girl with the gift of healing. After fleeing Avalon, Issylte struggles with losing her previous life and lover. As time passes, Tristian and Issylte must navigate their feelings for each other and learn who they can trust as dark forces threaten to tear them apart. After becoming the Lady of the Mirrored Lake, Issylte finds herself questioning everything as she works to find an object that calls to her beneath the surface. Together, Tristian and Issylte must work to save their lives as they know it– and each other.
The author has woven a gripping plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat as the characters navigate through their personal and external conflicts, which have high stakes and much depth. One of this book’s standout features is how the author handles the relationship between the two main characters, Tristian and Issylte. The added element of Tristian being pursued by someone else adds a layer of complexity to their dynamic, allowing for a deeper exploration of their feelings toward each other while also creating mistrust among some of the other characters. The characterization of the characters is well done, and there are a number of subplots worked into the main storyline. These allow the reader to gain a deeper understanding of the characters and how things work in the world while adding to the overall enjoyment of the book.
The Lady of the Mirrored Lake is a wonderful addition to the series, filled with adventure, magic, and complex relationships. I would recommend this book to fans of fantasy, medieval stories, and mythical creatures, as they will undoubtedly find it thrilling and captivating.

Sharing Rose’s Story
Posted by Literary Titan

The Rose of Washington Square follows the life of an aspiring woman and artist who fought to make a name for herself in a man’s world. Where did the idea for this novel come from?
I love writing biographical historical fiction. The protagonist of my debut novel, I am Mrs. Jesse James, had ties to my home state of Missouri, and I wanted to shine a spotlight on another woman from the Midwest. When I searched for possible candidates, I ran across Rose O’Neill. I found her to be an extremely accomplished woman, one who doesn’t get nearly enough credit for what she did. For example, she worked tirelessly to help women get the vote. She advocated for women wearing comfortable clothing instead of binding themselves in corsets. She was generous to creatives who had no other support, and she wasn’t afraid to advocate for herself and for others. I think of Rose O’Neill as a true Renaissance woman.
What kind of research did you do for this novel to ensure you captured the essence of the story’s theme?
I spent more than a year in initial research, and another year with additional research while I wrote the book. I dipped into family correspondence, read books and articles, studied newspaper accounts, and spent a day at Rose’s beloved home in Walnut Shade, Missouri. The more I learned, the more excited I became about sharing Rose’s story.
What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?
Although Rose produced a prodigious body of work, my intent was not to bring up every detail of her artistic and literary endeavors. Rather, I wanted to explore her relationships with other people, places, and events; using that as a springboard to show how these elements helped to shape her life’s path: her personality, opinions, and decisions. How she evolved from a nineteen-year-old girl to a determined woman of world fame who remained tempered by compassion.
What is the next book that you are working on and when will it be available?
I haven’t started researching in earnest yet, but I’ve identified a potential subject for my next historical novel. I can’t disclose anything more now, but I can say she’s a woman who made waves in the world of medicine.

Self-taught artist Rose O’Neill leaves the Midwest for New York in 1893, determined to become an illustrator in a field dominated by males. Mindful of her duty to the impoverished family she left behind, Rose’s obligations require her to yield to the men who hold the reins of her career; as well as the men she grows to love.
Yet despite every obstacle facing her, she excels at her craft, eventually designing a new character, the Kewpie. Her creation explodes into a phenomenon, but Rose’s disenchantment with the status quo fosters new ambitions. She must decide whether to remain within the boundaries dictated for her, or risk everything she’s gained to pursue the creative and personal passions that ignite her soul.
With grit and tenacity, Rose O’Neill blazed an unforgettable path during the tumultuous times of the early 20th century.

The Spell
Posted by Literary Titan

The Spell by C.V. Shaw is an endearing tale set in 16th-century England, which takes place not long after King Maurice’s war against France. The king’s five-year-old daughter Isabella gets shot by an archer, who appears to be a mysterious figure. While the stubborn king searches the dark forest for this archer, his queen Lilac worries about the cursed arrow. The royal family of Fleurham becomes entangled in a web of magic, adventure, and deception. When the king returns home after years in captivity, his family struggles to regain the love and harmony that once bound them together. They must learn to see beyond the spell, incorporate their fragile roots, and become strong again.
The author’s writing will hold your attention from cover to cover, with an articulate style and vivid descriptions that will transport the reader to the lush countryside of Fleurham. The plot is intriguing and spellbinding. Throughout the story, you’ll learn of the unique backstories, from the witches who helped raise Isabella to the housekeeper’s family, the king’s horse, and other distinct events that create a fantastic page-turner.
Shaw’s book is not only enthralling in the sense of historical fantasy but also contains meaningful lessons. The family often blames their poor choices on a curse. However, it’s interesting to see how their lives unfold and to discover whether or not a curse, misfortunate, or other reasons are the root cause of their tragedy within the family and the kingdom.
The Spell by C.V. Shaw is an immensely detailed and thrilling story that I would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys fantasy, romance, and historical fiction. I recommend this stellar book for its gripping storyline and unique emphasis on accountability and how one event, one decision, can result in a powerful outcome.

Time’s Daughter
Posted by Literary Titan

Christina Forsythe is a young school teacher who is mysteriously transported from the twentieth century back to 1875 to live a legend that she has heard about her entire life. Christina finds herself in Whispering Oaks with Rainer Thorpe and his six-year-old daughter Marjorie. Adopting the identity of her ancestor and doppelganger, Christina is compelled to be Majorie’s governess as she becomes caught in the feud between Rainer and his greedy step-brother Eli. After the sudden death of Rainers’s wife and the ensuing rumors, Rainer Thorpe loses his mind. Christina falls for this eccentric man while they plan to find her a way back home. Will Christina be able to uncover the conspiracy against Rainer’s health and estate and also find her way home?
Time’s Daughter by Jo Anne Barnes is a sensuous time travel romance novel that combines elements of science fiction, mystery and history into a story that will pique readers curiosity. The time travel narrative has its own set of rules that differ from most time travel tropes which makes this both a fun and unique read.
The author explores living in alternate histories and centuries in an intriguing way. The characters navigate the past and the future, showing the clash of customs and morals that accompanies going back in time and references to technology and cultures that exist in the 20th century. The novel also explores themes of family, a father’s love, and mental illness in ways that feel thoughtful, grounded and compelling. The author also includes a budding romance that weaves its way throughout the story. Readers will surely fall in love with Christina’s character as I know I was enthralled with her character after her dramatic evolution throughout the story.
With a love that transcends centuries, the plot is interesting and the characters are fascinating. Time’s Daughter is an entertaining historical romance novel that will appeal to readers looking for their fix after finishing Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series.
