Perseverance: Rise Of The Trials – Book Trailer

How do you overcome a past full of heartache? In my wildest dreams, I never would have been able to imagine my life taking a turn like this. Part of me is still having trouble accepting it. Yet, I can’t deny what is happening to me. Trystan has had a front row seat to witnessing it all, while Blake remains in the dark. I don’t know how to tell Blake and part of me is extremely apprehensive about doing so. But how long can I keep it from him? Doesn’t he deserve to know? The three of us go to visit my family. I have to find a way to tell them that their life as they know it has fundamentally shifted. I have to find a way to tell them what has happened to me. Well, at least, that was my original purpose for going to see them. But things take a turn. My original reason for going to see everyone changes into a struggle to keep my past with Trystan from becoming exposed. If it’s exposed, then my deepest pains will be as well. No one knows the heartbreak I’ve endured. It doesn’t take long for people to notice changes in the way Trystan and I are around one another now. It doesn’t take long for them to pick up on the tension that continually laces the air between Trystan and Blake. It also doesn’t take long for Trystan to start pushing me for deeper access to the parts of my heart that have sustained the most damage over the years. A day trip to see Trystan’s family becomes an overnight stay and Trystan proposes and idea that I find both tempting and terrifying at the same time. Can I really resist him? Secrets become exposed and a major misunderstanding results in major consequences for everyone…I thought I knew pain before. I had no idea what hell I was about to be subjected to.

Tragic Consequences

Rob Lockett
Rob Lockett Author Interview

Resurrection follows a man that is overtaken by a demonic antagonist. What was the inspiration for the setup to this thrilling story?

I have always been a fan of the supernatural and tragedies, through books and film, and the way they reflect societal issues. A major influence of particular significance has been the Tragedy of Doctor Faustus, where the protagonist enters into a pact- or a deal that is too good to be true. I feel as readers we have to question the motives for someone to sell their soul. Is it for the pursuit of greater power, like Dr Faustus? Or is it an act of desperation or vengeance? Does the character have nothing to lose? In answering these questions in the supernatural I feel that we are on a path to self-discovery. The journey of self discovery for the character of Adam follows a downward spiral that ultimately causes him to feel the need for reciprocity, but with tragic consequences.

The Dark Passenger is an intriguing character with a unique voice. What were some driving ideals behind the character’s development?

The dark passenger idea originally comes from the Jeff Lindsay Dexter novels, though in Resurrection it reflects the swirling influence of the voice that overtakes the subconscious. What starts as an inner monologue quickly develops into something far more sinister. The dark passenger also symbolises our own personal inner demons and the voice we create from a history of depression and anxiety, clouding our sense of self. The growing power of the dark passenger in Resurrection ultimately takes over like the Hulk with Bruce Banner, leaving the real self in the backseat, taken hostage as they bear witness to all manner of indescribable evil.

In developing the transition into the dark passenger, I was also exploring the idea behind cells and cell mutations, and if cells can regenerate or change their genetic information. Imagine if they completely change to create a completely different entity within a person. Would it be a complete transformation? Or would they hold onto past memories?

Again, I’m hoping by posing these questions that readers can do some navel gazing and ponder the significance of their own sense of identity.

What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?

Themes that were crucial to the novel relate to the importance of how power corrupts and how evil often manifests by preying on weaker minds. The novel also involves the process of Self-discovery, which can also be both frightening or rewarding depending on perspective and the events that affect the individual, For instance , the characters of Adam and Sarah are vastly different and have shaped a very unique path for each to follow. Do these destinies converge at the end like a Robert Frost poem? you decide. It also thematically follows both the path of self-destruction one can find themselves on, while also allowing the classic clash between good and evil.

Another crucial theme is about how we can idolise or make terrible choices under desperation. In Resurrection, no characters are perfect. The original protagonist is deeply flawed and the dark passenger at times can be strangely charming or empathetic at times despite enacting acts of atrocity. It is often in their desperation that all characters show who they truly are.

What is the next book that you are working on and when will it be available?

Despite the insistence by my wife Chivonne that I should write a traditional crime novel (a side project), I’m currently working on a YA fantasy novel in the style of Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Name of the Wind, etc.

The working title is called The Way of the Guardians and it focuses on the fantasy world of Celesk where a group of people called The Guardians have to fight for survival and to prevent the world order from descending into one of chaos and evil. I’m determined not to write lengthy passages about Characters that hike for miles on end; rather it starts off with an epic battle, a siege and very much a tense chase style thriller as the heroes avoid the great might of the villainous Valezk and his vast army.

There’s also some dedication and subversion to the original Hero’s Journey as the heroes debate their own existence, along with the villains. Like the force in Star Wars, there is also a completely new religion or ideology in The Way of the Guardians.

1989: What Happens When A Killer Returns For Revenge

Nicole Jones has her work cut out for her. Her life hasn’t been easy, but she has managed to achieve great things and has done so despite the tragedies that haunt her. When she loses her husband, the secrets they have been hiding for years begin to rise to the surface and threaten Nicole’s very future. A murderer has made an appearance and seems hell bent on ruining the lives of everyone associated with a case from the past. Nicole, lonely and confused but determined, makes it her mission to find out who is behind these copycat killings and who stole her husband from her.

James Smith’s 1989: What Happens When a Killer Returns for Revenge, takes readers on a thrill ride that unfolds over decades and through the lives of everyone involved with the Penny Murders. The trail of despair left by these murders has inched its way into the lives of Nicole, her husband Marcus and everyone around them.

Right out of the gate, Smith hits the mark with this fantastic thriller. I enjoy a mystery with as little fluff as possible, and Smith delivers that and much more. This dark and engaging thrill ride draws readers into the lives of Nicole and Detective Howard. The steps the two take to find out who is responsible for killing Nicole’s husband are extensive and keep readers on their toes. When I can predict the killer in the first half of a book, I am disappointed to say the least. Smith, however, has managed to keep me guessing to the very last page–definitely a page-turner.

Smith’s characters are written with an intensity that keeps readers invested in every move they make, and he balances their appearances well throughout the plot. I appreciated the glimpses into the past, and the character development moves along at a nice clip. Readers will become attached to Nicole and her plight from the first chapter of Smith’s work.

James Smith’s 1989: What Happens When a Killer Returns for Revenge is a haunting crime thriller that will appeal to murder mystery fans. While it stands as a fairly long novel at just shy of 400 pages, Smith’s writing is a quick read. Readers will find themselves devouring the mystery surrounding this new onslaught of murders. The ending of Smith’s work will leave readers guessing and, as I have become fully invested in the characters, I am hoping to see more from Smith in this series.

The Ghastly Horrors

Braedon Riddick
Braedon Riddick Author Interview

Ungodly follows the horrible occurrences that plague the campus of Calisade Mountain College. What was the inspiration for the idea behind this story?

The entire story sprouted from one single seed: when Amanda sees the silhouette in the red room. One night, (I don’t believe it was dark and stormy) that visual came to me as nothing more than a standalone image. It truly intrigued me . . . and also creeped me out in just the right way to take my curiosity to the next level. I was compelled to learn more about the reasons behind the silhouette in the red room and, make no mistake about it, I discovered way more than I had bargained for, leading to a slew of sleepless nights, and many questionable looks from my wife that suggested she was no longer sure of her husband’s sanity.

The book is filled with many great characters. Who was your favorite character to write for?

I met a lot of interesting characters during my time on Calisade Mountain — some wildly different than others, as alluded to in your review — but I connected with none more than Amanda. Her spirit expressed itself very early on, and I just couldn’t get enough of it. Obviously, life deals us all hardships; the variables are the nature, number, and difficulty of the hardships we face, and how we choose to respond to them. How Amanda handles hers really speaks to me. Her resilience and sense of resolve in the face of adversity were contagions that infected me quickly and, ultimately, ended up being the driving force behind the novel. Honestly, were it not for her perseverance and strong personality, I might have lacked the courage to write about the ghastly horrors experienced on Calisade Mountain. So, indeed, I consider Amanda a dear friend.

What were some themes that you wanted to explore in this book?

With any horror tale, there’s usually a discernible dose of Good vs Evil. While the candidates on either side of the equation can have countless faces and may not be as easily identifiable as prior candidates, both parties should be represented well in order to create a compelling case. Although it is quite clear early on that there’s an evil force at work in Ungodly, its face is blurry, its nature unknown . . . which presents the underlying theme of the novel: Fear of the Unknown. As a lifelong fan of horror films and fiction, nothing moves my needle more than exploring the eerie extents of the unknown. Within that scary exploration, however, is where I seek out the beautiful, overarching theme of life: Survival. The undeniable instinct to survive at whatever cost, no matter the obstacles. The human spirit has always fascinated me in this way. No matter how bad or scary things may get, I’ll not bet against the collective human spirit to overcome the odds — even when certain sacrifices are required.

What is the next book that you are working on and when will it be available?

I’ve got a few concepts in the works at the moment, moving each forward with organic progression. Being a methodical writer who enjoys constructing complex pieces, both structurally and conceptually, I tend to work judiciously, opting to err on the side of unpredictability, otherwise I’ll lose interest. In essence, if I can too easily predict a story’s ending when the pawns are in place, it’s not unlike me to abandon the tale and move along to another project. If I feel the story doesn’t allow for enough character freedom, if their actions seem too constrained, I’ll send it to the scrap yard for parts. Perhaps an analogy for my aversion to writing pedestrian, predictable fiction would be my inability to cook something commonplace. Let me clarify: I rarely cook, but when I do, according to my wife, I typically choose some exotic recipe that no one’s heard of or tried to make. Apparently, I strive for the culinary creations that require code deciphering to acquire a cryptic map to find the hidden recipe, and the ingredients for which can only be found with the guidance of a Sherpa and a mountain goat . . .

As for when to expect what’s next . . . well, much like how it’s said succinctly more than once in the novel: Soon.

Wicked phenomena strike the isolated campus of Calisade Mountain College. A homeless man sees his dead son in an abandoned dormitory, pursues the boy inside, and meets his demise. In the dark of night, a student witnesses a man plummet from a high-rise — a surefire suicide — but the detectives find no body. A campus police officer suddenly develops a taste for rape — and a homicidal hunger. The townspeople always sensed an intangible wrongness on the mountain . . . even before the evil enigma was afoot.

Ungodly

Ungodly by [Braedon Riddick]

Ungodly is a chilling horror thriller written by Braedon Riddick. There is a fascinating, albeit disturbing, concept explored within the pages, reminding me of the eerie feel in Stephen King novels, but a bit more expressive rather than reminiscent. Set on Calisade Mountain College, Ungodly begins with a thwarted plan from a troubled teenager who aimed for mass murder. The mass murder may have been stopped but an unseen aftermath, possibly worse than before, now takes place.

There are more than a few characters in Ungodly, some wildly different while others seem similar in certain regards, but there is one word that can describe every single one of them; flawed. Author Braedon Riddick went far to set up realistic character flaws, then to delve in and show how these can control someone or affect them silently. I appreciated how these were portrayed as realistic flaws, from a drunken abuser to a cheating spouse, and all the characters, victims included, don’t always have a good ending. I had some trouble connecting with particular characters, which I assume was the point, but it did make me reluctant to read a few chapters. Eventually, this balances out with character strengths and relationship growths throughout the story. The relationship between our protagonist Amanda and Brian was a breath of fresh air from the horror and suspense filling this book.

Braedon Riddick’s prose is a big highlight in this novel. He has the ability to evoke some raw emotions with simple but effective language. There are many scenes in Ungodly that froze the air still and silent before shrieking in the reader’s face. The atmosphere was incredibly eerie for the first two thirds before propelling readers towards the climax, and that may be because of how effectively the author writes fear of the unknown. However, the novel takes place with multiple timelines shifting between many perspectives. This can take a while to get used to and takes some time to get emotionally invested in the characters because we’re hopping from one character to the next.

Following incredibly authentic, and flawed, characters made me want to push through the slower parts of the novel. The second half had me completely immersed in the story. By the ending, I rooted for our main cast, nervous for what may happen but excited to see where it would go. Ungodly is a horror novel for readers who enjoy slow building thrillers with a thick atmosphere and a dark but gripping story line.
