Mr. Gobscheit
Posted by Literary Titan

Mr. Gobscheit, by Avery Mann, follows semi-retired American naval officer and diplomat Mark Jamison, happily tucked away with his wife Sarah in Angel Landing, until an early-morning call from his old friend Foggy Gorgarty yanks him back into the world of espionage and geopolitics. Jamison is quickly reactivated by US naval intelligence and dispatched to Dublin under diplomatic cover, notionally to advise on safeguarding the undersea fiber-optic cables that make Ireland a digital hub, and less openly to nudge the country toward NATO membership. Once in Ireland, he finds himself reporting—at least on paper—to Jack Gobscheit, a vain, corner-cutting defence official whose celebrity stems from having “persuaded” Moscow to remove a loose Russian nuclear device from Irish waters near the AE6 relay station. Jamison, Foggy, and the American naval attaché Tom Harrington slowly uncover the truth behind that device, a Russian trawler snooping around the cables, and a web of connections linking the Irish ministry, the Russian embassy, and a powerful transatlantic surveillance contractor—culminating in a high-stakes play that weaponizes undersea infrastructure, media leaks, and public outrage to reshape Ireland’s debate over neutrality and NATO.
I enjoyed how unabashedly character-driven this thriller is, even when it’s neck-deep in technical and political detail. Jack Gobscheit is drawn as a kind of tragicomic embodiment of mid-level power: smug, lazy, eager for status, and entirely willing to trade national security for a slice of a Kremlin-backed hotel empire. His partnership with Russian political operator Sergay Markov, their pilgrimage to Putin’s seaside dacha at Gelendzhik, and Jack’s golf-course alliance with a very recognizable American president give the book an almost satirical energy; the scenes where global security is haggled over between tee shots or glossed in translation so Jack can focus on his future casinos are darkly funny and slightly chilling.
On the other side, you have Foggy–wry, loyal, quietly competent, and his complicated entanglement with Jack’s wife Sally, whose affair doubles as a human-scale melodrama and an ingenious way for NATO to keep eyes on a man who might be selling out his country one memo at a time. That blend of farce and genuine menace worked for me: nobody here is a flawless superhero, but you can feel how venality at the middle tier of government can be just as dangerous as malice at the top.
The novel grounds itself in real-world developments: Snowden’s revelations about NSA cable taps, Medvedev’s explicit threat to treat undersea cables as legitimate wartime targets after Nord Stream 2, the expansion of Russian espionage in Dublin, and the role of big tech data centers in Ireland’s economy are all woven into the narrative. I appreciated the topicality. This really is a thriller of now, not some abstract Cold War rehash. Long passages walk the reader through the architecture of ONI’s technical centers or the economics of Ireland’s data-center boom. The book earns its techno-thriller label with a real sense of dread. I just occasionally wished for one less paragraph of explanation and one more scene of Jamison actually wrestling with the moral cost of his schemes.
I’d recommend Mr. Gobscheit to readers who gravitate toward geopolitical thrillers, techno thrillers, spy novels, and political satire stories, especially anyone curious about how vulnerable our invisible infrastructure really is. If you like the mix of policy detail and moral ambiguity in a Tom Clancy novel, but wouldn’t mind a sharper, more ironic eye on bureaucratic ego and transatlantic dysfunction, this will feel pleasantly familiar. For me, Mr. Gobscheit is a timely, slightly barbed thriller that proves undersea cables and Irish neutrality can be just as gripping as missiles and moles.

Evil Lurks in Dark Places
Posted by Literary_Titan

Enigma Forced follows the R-Group as they confront powerful cartels and human traffickers, employing cutting-edge technology to dismantle these criminal networks. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?
Breakfield & Burkey continually scan the horizon in our research for illegal and unscrupulous technology applications. We saw cryptocurrency acting like a magnet for crime and profits outside the law. We envisioned a mashup of social issues to drive our creative writing on this story. We write about the synergies between bad actors and their relentless hunt for illegal and immoral profiteering. This story showed up in our nightmares with human trafficking holding hands with opioid importing and the underground sex trade. The most significant problem was to throttle the heartbreaking information flow we saw and try to breathe life and hope into the story. We recognize it is impossible to save everyone. But if you can save even a few, then there is hope.
The supporting characters in this novel, I felt, were intriguing and well developed. Who was your favorite character to write for?
That is a tough question. Whether good or evil, creating each character is a challenge. Marian, with her husband Brayson, rose to the top with your question. Hers is an interesting story that we like to tease out a little at a time. A close second would be Judith and Xiamara, our cyber-freebooters who are in the thick of things as the good guys/gals but always scheming about a new side hustle that eventually gets them into trouble.
I find that while writing, you sometimes ask questions and have the characters answer them. Do you find that to be true? What questions did you ask yourself while writing this story?
We enjoy crafting plots and storylines with the good guys on top until they’re not. Evil lurks in dark places and has a way of creating an unpredictable path, sometimes leaving the heroes in their wake. Each character must answer the question of where they are going and what they are bringing to this tale. Our goal is always to make the story unexpected and exciting for the reader.
What is the next book in the Enigma Heirs series that you are working on, and when will it be available?
Enigma Jewels is the third book and final thriller in the Enigma Heirs trilogy. Work has already begun, and we expect to have it out by the end of the first quarter of 2025.

Profiteers are preying on displaced souls who seek freedom, sacrificing everything. Wanting to give their children hope and a future, but they wrongly trust on a roll of loaded dice. Teens are picked off and sold into slavery. Cartels offer the choice to strong, young men to move illegal drugs over the border or die.
The R-Group and CATS team leaders want to end Mateo’s inhuman business model. The heroes must derail the human exploitation and opioid epidemic, killing people in increasingly dramatic numbers. If they can save even a few from the jaws of death, they win.
The present-day battle is in full swing, yet it can end badly for humanity unless the Enigma Heirs triumph. Who will survive the onslaught and how fast can they make Mateo pay?

Enigma Forced
Posted by Literary Titan

Enigma Forced, by Charles Breakfield and Rox Burkey, is a fast-paced techno-thriller that delves into the world of cyber espionage and human trafficking. The story follows the R-Group and CATS teams as they confront powerful cartels and human traffickers, employing cutting-edge technology and agile programming methods to track and dismantle these criminal networks. The narrative is a gripping blend of suspense and technical detail, weaving together multiple plotlines involving cyber surveillance, cryptocurrency, and the harrowing realities of modern-day slavery.
From the outset, I was captivated by the complex characters and the intricate plot. The authors have done a remarkable job of creating a vivid world where technology and human emotions collide. For instance, the scenes involving the deployment of snooping codes to open Wi-Fi routers are both thrilling and terrifyingly plausible. The use of real-world technological concepts, such as agile programming and cryptocurrency, adds a layer of authenticity that tech enthusiasts will appreciate. The book’s inclusion of detailed technical jargon adds a layer of authenticity that tech enthusiasts will appreciate. The authors’ descriptions of programming techniques and cyber tools are thorough and accurate and enrich the narrative, providing a deeper immersion into the world of cyber espionage. These moments are balanced by strong character development and engaging dialogue that keeps the story moving.
One of the book’s many strengths is its ability to tackle serious issues like human trafficking with sensitivity and urgency. The portrayal of the victims and the detailed exploration of the trafficking networks are both compelling and heartbreaking. The authors do not shy away from the grim realities, but they also provide a sense of hope and resilience through the protagonists’ relentless pursuit of justice. This balance makes the book both thought-provoking and emotionally engaging.
Enigma Forced is a compelling read for fans of techno-thrillers and cyber-espionage. The blend of high-stakes action and poignant human stories makes it a standout in its genre. I would highly recommend it to readers who enjoy complex, technology-driven narratives and those interested in the fight against human trafficking. Charles Breakfield and Rox Burkey have gifted readers with a gripping story that is rich in technical detail and well worth the read.

Enigma Tracer
Posted by Literary Titan

Enigma Tracer kicks off a new and exciting series by Breakfield and Burkey. Gracie, the heir apparent to R-Group, has taken up a case brought to her by her former college roommate, Bailey Smith. Gracie and Bailey, along with their current beaus, Jeff and Keith, go undercover to embark upon a cruise to gather intel on Philip Pliant, the predatory CEO of Pliant Industries. Using their wits and charm, along with a captivating cast of supporting characters from the Cyber Assassin Technology Services (CATS), the foursome engages in a treacherous cat-and-mouse investigation.
Authors Breakfield and Burkey do a fantastic job laying the groundwork in the opening chapters, establishing the characters and their backgrounds. Gracie and Bailey are quite likable, and their chemistry is palpable. I appreciate that they’re not two Mary Sues, as Gracie has impulse control and anger issues, and Bailey seems to struggle with alcohol. Jeff and Keith are well-fleshed out as capable companions who are also a little jealous of their better halves’ undercover positions.
Once the story gets going, Enigma Tracer is an exciting read. The dialogue between characters does a lot of heavy lifting for the exposition. The operatives discuss their dates and socialize while on their actual mission. This adds a fun layer to the story and shows that the next generation of R-Group is still young and inexperienced.
Enigma Tracer is highly recommended to fans of technothrillers, and fast-moving plots, and is a must-read for longtime fans of the authors. Dramatic, high-tech action fills the pages of this gripping story. I highly recommend readers experience the sharp writing and enthralling plot that Breakfield and Burkey bring to their series.

The Enigma Threat
Posted by Literary Titan
After what feels like an eternity has passed, Charles Breakfield and Roxanne Burkey grace our bookshelves with a new addition to their epic techno-thriller saga: The Enigma Threat. This new installment is brimming with excitement, adventure and the captivating character development that we have come to know and love from this series. Not only are we visited by characters we had grown attached to in previous books, we are introduced, quite literally, to the next generation. This sets the stage for future books in the series with a new cast and allows us to witness our favorites in the newest and most unpredictable role ever: as parents.
As in previous books, Breakfield and Burkey breakdown the intricate tale they are weaving into digestible chapters. While it might seem overwhelming to pick up a book with double-digit chapter listings, they are developed in such a way that it allows the reader to remain engaged and makes the scene changes easier to follow. The pacing is just quick enough that you won’t get bored, but not too fast that you feel completely lost. As always, it’s not completely necessary to read previous books in the series, however it lends an enormous amount of backstory and character development if you do.
With such a large cast it might be difficult to remember who appeared previously and who is completely new. This is fine for new readers, but for existing fans you may have to jog your memory a bit to place some of the characters in the Enigma timeline. This is a normal effect with series that have so many installments and that have been running for such a long time. While the specialized terms are helpful, especially for newcomers or those not well versed in cyber technology and espionage, it might also be helpful to have a character list and identify which books they were previously seen in. This can help sort out who is new and who is returning, plus give new readers the opportunity to hunt down previous appearances by their favorite characters.
Charles Breakfield and Roxanne Burkey deliver another smashing installment to the Enigma series with The Enigma Threat. There is something for everyone in this exciting and gripping adventure. With characters new and old gracing the pages readers will find the excellent content they’ve come to love and expect from this amazing duo. You can’t go wrong adding this book to your library.

The One Singularity
Posted by Literary Titan
Artificial Intelligence is the technology behind things like search algorithms, virtual assistants such as Siri, and self-driving cars. However, scientists are working towards Artificial General Intelligence, which will allow the creation of systems that are more intelligent than human beings. Elon Musk, Bill Gates, and the late Stephen Hawking warn of the dangers of this technology, such as autonomous weapons, social grading (for example, China’s social credit system), and more systems that invade your privacy. Perhaps the greatest danger is when the machines get so intelligent that they take over. See, an AGI’s solution to problems such as climate change, food shortage, and poverty might mean the annihilation of the whole world.
The One Singularity, by RD Palmer, is a futuristic thriller whose antagonist is an Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) called The One. The protagonist is a scientist who hoped the AGI would be the last human invention. However, soon after he creates the first AGI in human history, he discovers its solution to problems in the world is not what he expected. Now he has to kill his creation to prevent it from wiping away the world’s population.
The book is written with vivid imagery, alluring diction, and excellent pacing. It provides a relatively clear view of what the world would become if we are not careful to regulate artificial intelligence and related technologies.
In the book, Palmer portrays how scientists are eager to make the world a better place through technology, how the military will always try to use such technology to their advantage, how there will always be a group who see the dangers of advanced technology, and how somehow religious sects like the Amish are on the right side by shunning technology.
What I liked most about the book is the unpredictability. I was consistently surprised with the twists and turns in the plot. RD Palmer doesn’t follow the familiar plot of other futuristic thrillers. There are lots of things you will not see coming, such as most human beings embracing the AGI, albeit without knowing its agenda.
I also liked how each chapter starts with a quote from a famous philosopher such as Galileo Galilei, Plato, Napoleon Bonaparte, and Aristotle.
The One Singularity is a riveting novel that has a cliff hanger of an ending that begs you to read the follow up novel. It leaves you wondering what happens to the characters. However, The One Singularity is by far the best futuristic thriller I have read this year, and one whose predictions I hope do not come true.

While Chasing Out Our Destinies
Posted by Literary Titan

Newton’s Cradle follows Terence who is forced to steal secrets from his boss and finds technology that can change the world. What was the inspiration for the setup to this thrilling novel?
I’ve always been a bit of a science geek, and these are certainly interesting times to live in, having profound consequences for society. Just think of how the Internet and cell phones, in such a short time span, have changed the way we learn and communicate. Now, what if humanity gained access to free, clean and unlimited energy? No need for expensive and polluting oil, coal, or nuclear fission. How’s that for a game-changer? Or a central premise for a novel?
Terence is an interesting and well-developed character. What were some driving ideals behind his character development?
This might sound pretentious. But I wanted the novel to be a discussion of life itself, as much as a plain thriller story. You know, the trials and tribulations we all face in life while chasing out our destinies. Terence is a vehicle for exploring these issues. I wanted him to be likable, but with character flaws, having consequences for himself as well as people close to him. And then follow his journey into self-actualization.
I enjoyed the mystery at the heart of this story. Did you plan the plot before writing or did it develop organically while writing?
First of all, I’m glad you liked it. As for the question: definitely the latter. I had a vague idea, of course, of corporate struggle, self-interested personalities, and betrayal. But the idea of Cold Fusion as a central theme entered later into the writing. Other plot devices, likewise. Central characters were there at an early stage, sub-plots and minor characters showed up later. It’s a bit like a jig-saw, missing bits and pieces somehow appear and fall into place.
What is the next book that you are working on and when will it be available?
I’m currently working on a screenplay. Gangsters and heists at the heart of it. Including a discussion of life itself. We’ll see how it goes.

Mafia and the Dark Net Combine
Posted by Literary Titan
Layers of Deception is a thrilling crime novel that delves into cyber-security, the dark web and criminal gangs in the Far East. What served as your inspiration while writing this novel?
Basically I wanted to write the type of book (and movie) that I enjoy myself. As for where the actual story came from, I started writing about situations I experienced over the years and the plot emerged as I built it out. I found that when I’m in the zone and typing away the story just unfolded quite naturally.
I wanted a main character that readers would really empathise with, so while he’s a very successful businessman on one level, I think there’s also a real vulnerability to him, mentally at least. I think it’s this side of him that makes him stand out and draws the reader into his life and problems.
I began writing during my recovery from a serious fall into a storm drain whilst on business in Singapore. Stuck in hospital I found it cathartic to write. It helped with my recovery, both mentally and physically. That was the start. Once back to work, and traveling internationally, I would write everywhere: on planes, trains, staying at hotels, at any given opportunity.
What is your professional experience and how has that helped you write this novel?
I worked for over 25 years in the technology sector – mainly internet security and international fraud detection. I wanted to bring my experiences of business deals and Internet security in the heart of banking systems, where you’d never expect everything to go very wrong very quickly, combining this as a thriller where modern-day mafia and the dark net combine to corrupt the heart of the international banking system.
I think it would really appeal to people who understand the techie stuff, but my aim was to make it perfectly accessible for non technical people too.
Whilst my time in the IT industry, international travel and experiences, equipped me with many stories over the years, my subsequent work as a therapist has enabled me to study all aspects of human behavior. I specialize in treating people with issues around anxiety, phobias and trauma. We are all fallible human beings. One of the main things that therapy gives me is empathy – helping me to understand and get into the mind of the characters in my writing
Kuala Lumpur is a detailed and fascinating backdrop to your story. Why did you choose this location for the setting to you novel?
The thriller draws on my many years experience of doing business in Kuala Lumpur as an IT business entrepreneur in the computer security sector trying to land contracts in Kuala Lumpur.
Despite its challenges, Kuala Lumpur is easily my favorite city in Asia. The city is always on the move, spurred by high technology, a strong knowledge-base and capital-intensive industries. The difference between rich and poor is very stark and there are issues with crime. Traffic is a nightmare as well. All of that aside, the food is fantastic and there are very few cities that are so inherently culturally diverse.
What is the next book that you are writing and when will it be available?
I’m working on my second novel, a thriller set in Kuala Lumpur. It’s about a Malaysian family who illegally buy a Vietnamese child – a boy – the result of a turbulent relationship between a UK businessman and a Vietnamese woman living in Kuala Lumpur. The boy thrived in his new loving family unit, but his life and all those around him were about to be devastated when his real mother, who had since married a rich American businessman – wants him back.
In addition I have completed two more plots. A sequel to Layers of Deception where a child is kidnapped by Malaysian triads as a means to extort funds from a UK business based in Kuala Lumpur. The other novel is a thriller based on my fall in Singapore.
