Properties Of Shapes
Posted by Literary-Titan

What Is the Shape of My Egg? invites children on an enchanting voyage with Silkie the chicken, unraveling the mysteries of geometry through farmyard adventures, empowering lessons, and endearing camaraderie. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?
The inspiration was actually quite simple. For some time, I have wanted to write children’s stories, but the question was about what? With a little help, I narrowed down my ideas to 1) my love for animals, namely my pets (though many), and 2) what I have learned as an educational researcher, particularly in the areas of mathematical learning and spatial abilities. I will say that integrating the two was no easy task. To date, my publications have involved a completely different style of writing—academic writing. So this book, and the others to follow, was nothing short of a challenge!
The focus on geometric shapes is tied to a recent study with my University of California colleagues. In brief, we explored differences in geometric shape knowledge between a sample of U.S. and Japanese children. Though there are a number of learning points to share, the one implication from the study is that communication about the properties of shapes matters as far as learning outcomes (i.e., above and beyond visual recognition of shapes alone). In other words, though children from an early age can readily identify a circle, do they actually know or can they verbalize the properties of circles (e.g., curved, round, no straight sides, no edges, no points, no beginning or end)?
Can you share any insights into the development process of the interactive exercises in the book, and how they are designed to help children embrace their developing geometric understanding?
The goal is to apply what children have learned in the aftermath of reading the book, ideally with an adult to help promote accurate learning and opportunity to talk about shapes. The shape hunt is merely one approach.
From a developmental perspective, tapping into multiple modalities to learn facilitates learning. With the shape hunt, children should be encouraged to look for, listen (as an adult provides direction as needed), and touch (e.g., trace) various objects that are the shape of a sphere or an ovoid. In addition, “spatial talk” (i.e., use of words such as left, right, above, below, far, and near) should also be encouraged. Spatial talk relates to the way we think about numbers (e.g., smallest to largest) as well as our ability to visualize mathematical information (e.g., properties of 2D and 3D geometric shapes). Taken together, I consider early exploration of shapes and space as a foundation for more advanced geometric concepts that will be introduced in later years.
You included insightful facts about the Silkie chicken breed in the book; was this a personal interest of yours, or was it chosen to add another layer of engagement with the story?
A very personal interest! As shared in the book, Silkie the chicken is a real-life character. For those who are familiar with the breed, it is so true that these chickens are delightful little critters. They make for wonderful pets—both inside and outside the home! I added Silkie chicken facts for those who are not familiar with the breed. So yes, it can be considered another layer of engagement, an added educational component to the book.
What is the next book that you are working on and when will it be available?
What Is the Shape of My Ears? is the second title in the Shape Stories with Farm Friends Series. It will be available via pre-order November-December 2023. The main character is Pearl (a mini donkey), also a real-life character! In this storyline, Pearl teaches her sidekick Duke (a mini horse) about the properties of triangles. What Is the Shape of My House?, the third and final title, should be available spring 2024 along with a supplemental shape activity book for children roughly 3-5 years of age.

Kickstarting Heart-to-Heart Conversations

Tease? No, Please: A Book That Teaches Kids to Just Say NO to Teasing and Bullying is beautifully written and addresses a subject that is not discussed enough at a young age. What was the inspiration for writing this children’s book?
The inspiration for writing this book stems from my passion to reduce teasing/bullying and the emotional impact it has on our children. Schools and schoolyards are meant to be a safe place for children to make friends, learn new things, and have fun. However, for some children, it can become a place of dread and anxiety due to teasing and bullying. The effects of bullying can have lasting psychological and emotional impacts on children, leading to school avoidance, depression, anxiety, and even suicide. All of us have been hurt by words and they may still hurt and haunt us even as adults because they have been conceived in our heart, establishing limitations in our lives. Teasing occurs more often in elementary school, intensifies in middle school, and slowly declines in high school. If we can tackle teasing at the outset during the impressionable ages of 5 or more, we can reduce the occurrences of teasing before it becomes a bigger problem.
What is one thing that you hope young readers take away from your book?
I hope young readers understand the harmful effects of teasing to guide their decision making, particularly the decision to not tease or make fun of others. My objective is for children to grow in empathy, kindness, and compassion.
How do you envision teachers and parents using your book to help children learn about and prevent bullying?
I envision teachers and parents using the book, Tease? No, Please!, to kickstart heart-to-heart conversations around the issue of teasing and bullying. There are many things that we try to explain to children but oftentimes don’t know how to convey in a way that will resonate with young minds. The book will help children to easily understand teasing and bullying from all perspectives – the target (victim), the teaser or bully, and the bystander. The book includes interactive activities that support the topic. Lesson plans are also available for teachers.
Is this the first book in the series for children on learning healthy mindsets? If so, when is the next book coming out, and what can your fans expect in the next story?
This is the first book of the series. The next book will be released in Spring 2024 and is centered around self-confidence. The protagonist (Molly) is faced with a new challenge at school. Stay tuned.

Throughout this engaging story, children will learn three important ways to handle teasing and bullying before it grows into a bigger and repetitive problem. Through rhymes and relatable examples, children will understand that it’s okay to have fun, but it’s never okay to make fun of others. They will also learn how teasing is like a sneeze, a tornado breeze, and stinky cheese! By the end of this book, children will have a greater understanding of what teasing and bullying are and how to handle these issues effectively.
This book includes fun concepts, simple similes, interactive activities and examples of positive self-talk to help readers learn how to prevent bullying and spread empathy, kindness, and compassion. Parents and educators are encouraged to teach children about teasing early to stop teasing and bullying at the outset and foster a healthy mindset of “Tease? No, Please!”.
This essential book encourages heart-to-heart discussions about:
Teasing
Bullying
Confiding in adults
Mixed emotions
Bystander behaviors
Assertiveness
Kindness
Compassion
Forgiveness
Self-love
Self-awareness

A Witch’s Lesson A Halloween Story
Posted by Literary Titan

On the enchanting eve of Halloween, two inseparable companions, Mary and Gary, eagerly gear up to embark on a delightful adventure of trick-or-treating. With their meticulously crafted costumes, these youthful spirits set out to immerse themselves in the revelry of the town, anticipating the joy of encountering numerous kindred souls and partaking in various delightful treats. Regrettably, an unforeseen obstacle emerges in their path in the form of a malevolent witch residing atop a nearby hill, intent on snuffing out their merriment. The fateful encounter between the witch and the resilient children takes a menacing turn when an incantation is unleashed, threatening to cast a shadow over their Halloween festivities. Will the sinister magic cast by the witch be surmountable, or will Mary and Gary’s cherished holiday be marred indefinitely?
A Witch’s Lesson by James Breznicky is a charming children’s book centered around triumphing over malice. This rhyming tale, exuding a blend of eerie intrigue and heartwarming sentiment, strikes a balance for a Halloween read that captivates without overwhelming its young audience. The portrayal of the witch encapsulates the essence of a spiteful individual intent on sabotaging the joys of others, evoking empathy for Mary and Gary as they confront this antagonist on the night of Halloween. The narrative leads to a satisfying resolution, instilling in the reader a sense of optimism and fulfillment, like a classic children’s tale. The vivid illustrations, crafted by illustrator Rizwan Jani, radiate a vibrant and cheerful ambiance. Each character springs to life distinctively, while the artist’s bold and vibrant hues effectively reinforce the storytelling.
A Witch’s Lesson by James Breznicky is an optimistic picture book showing kindness’s power. The narrative exudes a sincerity that resonates with readers. The blend of a charming story and delightful illustrations makes this rhyming book perfect for shared reading sessions with your little ones on a brisk autumn evening.
