Myth or Reality
Posted by Literary-Titan

Pope Joan follows a woman who defies all odds when she disguises herself as a man and rises through the ranks in the Catholic church and secures the position of Pope. Where did the idea for this novel come from?
I came across an article about the myth or reality of a female who became pope. Her real identity as a woman was revealed when her water broke in public, and she began to deliver a baby. According to the legend, she was stoned to death as she was about to enter one of the churches in Rome. I started to imagine how a woman back in those days, when a woman was heavily restricted, could climb the ladder through the church to become pope. What was her back story? My curiosity soon took over, and I did extensive research on the times in which she lived and the struggles she had to endure to succeed and become Pope Joan.
Can you share a little about the research that went into putting your book together?
The Internet offered a wide range of great resources to help me locate specific materials: timelines, biographies of people who lived during the age that I was interested in, places that housed certain religious orders, and the ongoing conflicts of the age. Generally speaking, I have had a fascination with the Middle Ages and now have a small reference library dedicated to the Crusades and the Reconquista.
What was your favorite moment in Joan’s story? Is there one scene that resonates with you?
I was most touched by Joan’s time in prison when she was awaiting execution. What was going through her mind? Surely, the uncertainty of being executed or not weighed heavily and gave her a feeling of dread. But also she thought about the safety and well-being of her child. No matter how old children are, their parents want to know they are safe.
Will your next book be historical fiction? What are you currently preparing for your fans?
I have written and my editor is currently finalizing my next historical fiction novel, Kitty Schmidt: My Life as a Prostitute. Kitty managed the Gestapo’s brothel during World War II. How did she find herself in this position? Did she have a family? What happened to her during the bombing of Berlin and the subsequent Russian invasion of the city? I wanted to explore all of these aspects of her life.

While Andrew pursues the world of numbers and accounting, Joan becomes an avid student, learning to love reading and acquiring knowledge, eventually – through a string of circumstances – propelling her to higher and higher offices within the church and finally becoming the first and only female pope.
How long does Pope Joan keep her gender a secret?

An Opening Death
Posted by Literary Titan

The Tangled Mane follows an undercover investigator at an elite country club who is caught up in a case of theft that takes a dark turn when a wealthy bride-to-be is found dead in her bathtub. What was your inspiration for the mystery that must be unraveled?
The inspiration was thinking of an opening death which is visually startling but at the same time ambiguous – it’s not immediately clear whether it was an accident, suicide or murder.
Was there anything from your own life that you put into the characters in your novel?
I’m obsessed with my dog, Otto. He’s always with me and so I gave Cally that same opportunity to have a dog whom she adores and who adores her back.
What was the hardest part about writing a mystery story, where you constantly have to give just enough to keep the mystery alive until the big reveal?
It’s obvious who commits the murder in my novel so I wanted to show enough of the murderer’s backstory for the reader to understand why. I also held back a huge secret until the very end which I hope comes as a real surprise to the reader. It’s hard to judge things after a while so I’m always glad when readers say they didn’t see it coming.
When will book two be available? Can you give us an idea of where that book will take readers?
The second book is out this April and sees Cally going undercover in a girls’ convent school run by nuns where a charred body has been discovered, along with some drugs, down a recently revealed oubliette. Cally investigates whether the two incidents are related and if they have any link to the suicide of a pupil in the 1990s.

When a social media star’s childhood crimes catch up with him, he retaliates by exacting revenge on those he holds responsible, leaving undercover PI, Cally Simmonds, in a race to discover his real identity.
At the same time as finding the killer, Cally must continue planning her upcoming wedding to keep both her fiancé and mum happy.
Set in The Welland Valley, The Tangled Mane is full of mystery and suspense with a final, emotional twist of fate which will leave the reader reeling.

Shelby Morrow Journals, 1929-1935, Book One
Posted by Literary Titan

In Shelby Morrow Journals, 1929-1935, by A.C. Holmes, readers are transported through an intricate tapestry of letters, journal entries, and audio recordings, painting an intimate portrayal of Shelby Morrow. This radiant yet tragically marked young woman navigates the complexities of her early life, burdened by neglectful parents and a malevolent older brother. Thankfully, an empathetic aunt steps in, striving to shield Shelby from the simmering political tensions of the era.
Despite Shelby’s intellectual depth and gentle demeanor, making connections proves a challenge. She forms an unexpected bond with Cecile, a young heiress with a benevolent yet enigmatic father, Monsieur Verrault. As the narrative progresses, we witness Shelby facing harrowing experiences that render her increasingly introverted, placing her in a stifling environment while the world outside plunges into turmoil.
What sets Shelby Morrow Journals, 1929-1935 apart is its blend of mediums that breathe life into this historical fiction. Our first encounter with Shelby is mediated by a letter addressed to Freddie, our narrator. Freddie’s diligent pursuit to unravel Shelby’s story is chronicled through riveting interviews and voice memos. A particularly memorable exchange is with Anselm Caulder, one of Shelby’s past admirers. The interplay between these gentlemen not only hints at Shelby’s multifaceted existence but also ignites a burning curiosity to delve deeper into her psyche. This intriguing juxtaposition between recounted events and real-time dialogue intensifies the narrative’s underlying tensions.
The book’s prose elegantly mirrors the era, encapsulating sentiments and contemplations that feel both authentic and deep. A standout moment is Shelby’s meditation on the ephemerality of time and memory, made all the more haunting as we observe her grappling with her own cognitive challenges in later entries. Additionally, Shelby’s heartwarming relationships with Cecile and her aunt provide a much-needed respite from her often troubling interactions with predatory older figures.
For fans of immersive historical fiction interwoven with elements of mystery, A.C. Holmes’s Shelby Morrow Journals, 1929-1935 promises to be a captivating discovery and one I highly recommend.

What Is Time?
Posted by Literary_Titan

Slow Space follows a physicist, his partner, and a young man from a troubled background who become entangled with a space mining corporation that takes them to the far reaches of space, where they inadvertently alter the course of human destiny.
I find the world you created in this novel brimming with possibilities. Where did the inspiration for the setting come from and how did it change as you were writing?
Thank you…I like that. Science fiction should be all about possibility. The setting came from the idea that time is actually impossible to comprehend. I wanted to feel like our weeks, months and years are just a drop in the ocean of a universe that’s 13 billion years old so far. Having the near future juxtaposed with the far future seemed like the best way to really try and feel that hugeness. So, I asked myself, ‘where do I think the world will be in 30 years and why?’ Once I answered that I had my setting and then I wanted the contrast with the far future to be surprising.
What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?
Apart from seeing ourselves in the context of the time the universe will exist there is a smaller theme looking at the way we react to crisis and things we perceive as a threat. A couple of the characters do some quite shocking things, in part, because they perceive threats that may, or may not be there. So, what does a world of angry reaction look like, as opposed to a world of lifting up those around us and working towards a common goal?
What is the next book that you’re working on and when can your fans expect it out?
Well, I think I have 6 fans at the moment! But SLOW SPACE has had a lot of great feedback and I am hoping to find some more like-minded people who love classic science fiction and the wonder that it always brings. As for book number 2, it is early days but I am writing. I want to improve as an author so I’m not rushing. Putting this book out has been a great journey for me and I want to work harder and make the next story even better.

Seven Point Eight: Beyond
Posted by Literary Titan

K. M. Gruchelska’s Seven Point Eight: Beyond is an ambitious and multi-layered story that blends science fiction with metaphysics, history, and even a bit of espionage. The novel follows the journey of Paul Eldridge, a physicist exploring the mysteries of consciousness and human potential, alongside a cast of intriguing characters whose lives interconnect in unexpected ways. With elements of quantum mechanics, secret research facilities, and past-life exploration, the book feels like a whirlwind of thought-provoking ideas wrapped in a gripping narrative.
The writing is dense but in a way that rewards patience. Gruchelska clearly has a deep love for scientific theories and philosophy, and that passion comes through in the book’s world-building. At times, it feels more like a Carl Sagan lecture than a novel, but I found myself fascinated by the way she ties quantum physics into a character-driven story. The early chapters, particularly Paul’s introduction to The Establishment, had me hooked. There’s something eerie about his recruitment, almost like an intellectual thriller where you’re not sure if the protagonist is onto the discovery of a lifetime or being manipulated into something far more sinister. The slow-burn tension in these moments worked well, making me eager to see where things would lead.
Where the novel really shines is in its sense of exploration both of the cosmos and the human mind. Tahra, a fantastic character, possesses a raw, psychic energy that grows throughout the book. Her struggles with self-discovery and control over her abilities felt authentic, even when the plot veered into deep metaphysical territory. The sequences where she taps into unseen dimensions are vivid and strange, almost like a blend of Dune and 2001: A Space Odyssey. One particularly gripping moment is when she connects with The Directors, mysterious entities who reveal tantalizing truths about reality. These passages made me feel like I was on the verge of understanding something profound, even if I wasn’t entirely sure what that something was.
Some sections get bogged down in exposition, especially when characters delve into theoretical discussions. I appreciate intellectual depth in science fiction, but there were points where the dialogue felt more like a lecture than a conversation. Still, the moments of action and intrigue, such as the sequences inside the research facility and the growing tension between Paul and Max Richardson, kept me engaged. I also enjoyed the recurring motif of “everything is connected,” which ties the book’s many threads together in a satisfying way.
Seven Point Eight: Beyond is a novel for readers who love their sci-fi with a side of existential questioning. If you’re the kind of person who likes to debate the nature of consciousness and quantum entanglement, you’ll likely find a lot to love here. It’s a book that demands attention and rewards curiosity. For fans of cerebral, idea-driven science fiction, it’s absolutely worth the read.

Grimdark Mindset
Posted by Literary Titan

Remembering Demons follows a man trapped in an asylum with no memory of his past, haunted by visions and surrounded by physicists who may or may not be just as lost as he is. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?
As I have no background in creative writing, it was something of a fluke. After talking about my idea for what would become The God Cycle trilogy with my father-in-law’s wife, I just sat down and started. I have always been fascinated by asylums. That may be why it started there.
What intrigues you about the horror and dark fantasy genres that led you to write this book?
I’ve always felt that if the fantastical elements of fantasy turned out to be true, they would invariably have to also be laced with horror. I am not of the grimdark mindset that all people are essentially morally gray, but I do think that dark fantasy offers an important alternative to more classic heroic fantasy.
What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?
With The God Cycle I wanted to present my ideas for how the fantastical could co-exist with modern day science, (physics in particular) by filling the many knowledge gaps that exist both in quantum mechanics and cosmology with magic and gods. I am fascinated by these scientific subjects and it was very important to me that these unknowns of modern science are dealt with faithfully.
Moreover, I wanted to combine the former with a deeply personal tale of pain and loss as experienced by the main character. I have often felt that the main character’s emotions were giving too short thrift in classical fantasy, perhaps to further plot development at the expense of character. I wanted to make sure to give the character’s emotions room to breathe.
Where does the story go in the next book and where do you see it going in the future?
I am currently editing book two of The God Cycle, Fighting Angels. The main character has inherited many problems from the conclusion of book one. Dealing with these issues will invariably lead to the setup for book three, Breaking Gods, in which the multiverse is explained and ultimately hangs in the balance. Anyone interested in a taste of what’s at stake can download my free short story, Catching Spiders, at my website. The short story takes place between books two and three, but is a non-spoiler stand-alone filled with clues that will make reading the books even more intriguing. The main character’s essential role in each book is perhaps best exemplified by my tongue-in-cheek subtitles for books one, two, and three, namely: Who is Daryl (book one)? What is Daryl (book two)? Why is Daryl (book three)?
Author Links: GoodReads | Instagram | Facebook | Website
Daryl doesn’t have to wonder… he knows.
But why do they stalk him? Why can’t he remember anything?
It’s enough to drive a guy crazy!
Meanwhile, the eerie asylum seems to know more than an old pile of rock and mortar has any right to and his therapy is uncovering a blood-stained past of pain and death, alongside something dormant within him of disturbing power. When Dr. Walker teaches him how to face his demons, the psychoses and dreams conspire to warn him of something even worse stalking him. Something ancient and evil.
To survive, Daryl must confront the repressed memories that drove him insane.
For madness—is a blunt instrument.
This dark fantasy epic and paranormal thriller with a Shutter Island’esque vibe will have you questioning what is real. The story mixes dark and traditional fantasy with horror and science fiction elements to explore mental health, guilt, and a world where the physical realm of our experience blends seamlessly with the fantastical realm of monsters and gods. Perfect for fans of The Gunslinger, The Dresden Files, and the TV series Black Mirror.
