A Gentlemen Killers’ Society

A Gentleman Killer’s Society is an intriguing book that will have a chill running down your spine. The story follows James, a young boy whose loner lifestyle lands him in an eccentric and deadly group. James gets to be part of a serial killer book club, a group which despite making him feel like he belongs, gets him to engage in dangerous activities. The innocent James, who the reader gets to understand slowly, morphs into a character with a killer mind. Taking the life of another human being is no easy task as James comes to learn. James has no guts to kill yet all eyes are on him. The character also gets into a dilemma as, despite not wanting to kill, James does not want to leave the group as he feels the members are now in his close circle.

Noah John is raw with his words, brutal with the character formation, unforgiving when it comes to scenes, and very creative. The main story is like no other. As a reader, you are constantly surprised by the turn of events as Noah John adds various exciting elements in his narration. Nothing prepares you for the gory scenes and the unmerciful nature of the main characters. Reading A Gentlemen Killers’ Society gives one the impression of being an extra character in a horror film.

I loved the paradox that was James, his conflicting self made him an unusual character that I enjoyed following. The author’s characters are odd, uncanny, solid, and expressive. The development of the plot, growth of characters, and mystery surrounding some of the characters made the book a consistently compelling read. I enjoyed the satire in the book. There are some parts of the story that are hilarious, leaving the reader in stitches. One of my favorite things about Noah’s writing is how he introduces characters. The way each character is described gives you an understanding of the characters’ physique and their mental state, which is needed in such a riveting psychological thriller. A Gentlemen Killers’ Society is an engrossing crime thriller that expertly uses satire to deliver some thought provoking commentary on society.

Sorcerers’ Prayer: Book 2 – Precious Blood & Honor and Majesty

Judge Kaona is a disturbed man, wrought with depression over his wife and unborn child’s death. For a short time he found solace in opium, but even that grew to not be enough. One day while presiding over a trial, he met Mister Jones and Priestess Kalehue, also known as TuTu Lana. It is later on from these two Kaona learns the secrets of immortality by drinking from the stone that resides under his old childhood church. After drinking the water, the Blood of Christ, Kaona is visited in a vision from Jesus telling him he is preparing to return and also, that Kaona’s son is alive out in the world. From here on out Kaona’s purpose in life is to find his son, and to retain position of the stone that the Blood of Christ flows from so he can keep his immortality. He endures extreme bipolar episodes, spends time in mental institutions, jail, and eventual in seeking out training for sorcery. All in the name of vengeance for the death of his Petunia.

From the opening pages this book hits the reader with culture, history, mystery and conspiracy. The dialect took some adjusting to but once you start following the flow, the Hawaian dialect enhances the story and draws you in more. The opening section of the book is a chaotic series of events as Koana transitions from the honorable Judge to crazed Prophet leading his followers against the law and convinced of the second coming. His ability to sway people and form his cult is fascinating. Luigi Spring’s ability to develop his characters is impressive. Koana and Jimmy, as they progress through so many different stages of their immortal life, intertwine their stories and you are constantly wondering what is real and what is an act. Sorcerers’ Prayer – Precious Blood touches on the mysteries revolving around the Freemasons. This is always a topic of conspiracy theorists and expert mystery novelists. The ability to cast his spells through prayer allows Kaona to obtain his long-sought revenge without revealing himself. This twist was different than other murder mysteries I have read in the past. The ever-changing relationship between Kaona and Jimmy was engaging and unpredictable. The plot lines and twists run deep and you are never sure how it will turn out, and if you think you know, you are probably wrong because some new information will pop up. This novel isn’t what I would call an easy read, but it is an enjoyable page turner. There are a lot of flashbacks and visions mixed into the plot line. You need to pay attention to what is going on and even the smallest of details will likely be important later on and you will have that “ahh ha” moment and it will suddenly all make sense, at least for the moment. I highly recommend this novel if you are looking for an escape. Sorcerers’ Prayer is a riveting mystery novel with some of the best elements of supernatural horror that I’ve seen in a while.

They’re Killers and Outlaws

Neil Chase
Neil Chase Author Interview

Iron Dogs follows a group of outlaws seeking shelter into a town that harbors an evil creature. What was the inspiration for the setup to this thrilling story?

I’ve always wanted to write a Western. Not only is it a throwback to a simpler life, unfettered by technology or mass media or the litany of problems and issues we deal with daily in the modern age, but it’s also the purest representation of the American ideal – that of freedom. Is there an image more synonymous with liberty than that of the cowboy on the open plain? And if we dig a little deeper, there is truth in that fictionalized model. Many of the first cowboys we attribute to the Wild West were veterans of the Civil War – men without property or purpose, who headed West in search of money or work, or in some cases simply longing to retreat as far from the horrors of the great conflict they left behind. Their stories are as varied and intricate as the men themselves.

But I also knew I didn’t want to write the same Western we’ve all seen before. While the men might seem like familiar tropes, their circumstances would be unlike anything you’ve read before. As a lifelong horror fan, I’ve always been fascinated by stories where a tight-knit group encounters an otherworldly danger, such as in Aliens, The Thing, and Dog Soldiers, to name a few. So I thought the combination of these genres would make for a special and unique story. If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if the Wild Bunch met the supernatural equivalent of the Predator, then this is the book for you.

I enjoyed the slow development of each character. Who was your favorite character to write for?

Each character had their special moments to me, and it was a fun challenge to write different chapters from different characters’ points of view. This was particularly true of Frank, Red and Cole, as the novel centers mostly on their viewpoints and backstories, and gives real insight into what makes them the way they are. They’re killers and outlaws, to be sure, but they’re also closer to brothers than friends or comrades. I didn’t want to have just one main protagonist, as it would tip my hand as to which characters would make it and which were fair game for the Strigoi. By focusing on three central characters instead, and to a lesser degree, the other three in the group, I felt I could inject not only some real character development for all of them, but also true unease at not knowing which of them would fall prey to the horrors on their journey.

That said, Red was probably my favorite to write, as his story is filled with unbearable tragedy and hate, and yet, despite it all, he finds himself on a path of redemption. To be honest, he started out as a minor character, and my plan was to have him die off quickly. But the more I dove into the hows and whys of what made him the way he was, the more he fascinated me, and the more story there was to tell around him. It was a case of the character guiding the writer’s hand, and rather than trying to force his path on some preconceived notion, I let him take me on his journey instead. I think it was the right choice.

The creature was creepy and the story had a consistently haunted feeling. What were some themes you tried to channel while writing?

Thank you for saying so. I spent quite a bit of time developing the Strigoi. I knew that in making my story a horror, I had to come up with a monster not seen before. While the main characters don’t actually know what it is, they come to rely on a combination of Eastern European and Native American folklore to guess at what it could be. As a result, I became familiar with European and Southwestern Native American cryptozoology in order to craft a creature that could plausibly fit in both such varied mythologies. The end result is a fresh take on a familiar trope of ordinary men pitted against an extraordinary and seemingly unstoppable creature.

And while the creature in Iron Dogs is unique and terrifying, the story is really about the men trying to survive, rather than the spectacle. The protagonists in this tale aren’t particularly special or good. They’re not even decent men. But they are loyal to one another, and that dedication may be the only thing standing between them and certain doom. We live in an increasingly polarized world, where too often people are judged solely by the content of their words and little on their actions. This book examines a group of men who barely get along at the best of times. They bicker and disagree about almost everything, and yet, they somehow stay together despite it. They are a community unto themselves. On some subconscious level, they come to realize that the only way for any of them to survive, they have to set aside petty squabbles and work together. In doing so, they become more than a community. They become family. And isn’t that what we all seek on some level? A sense of true belonging, where we are judged by the content of our actions and character more than anything else.

What is the next book that you are working on and when will it be available?

I’m excited to announce that the audiobook version of Iron Dogs has recently been completed and will soon be available on Audible. It was truly a labor of love, narrated by myself, and directed and edited by super-talented filmmaker and musician David Heacock, complete with original music written and performed by David as well. In addition to the audiobook, we’ll be making available the complete soundtrack, along with bonus music inspired by the novel. So whether you choose to listen to the audiobook or the music alone, you’re in for a fantastic time! Come to http://www.neilchasefilm.com for more details!

Alongside the audiobook, I’m also working on a few different projects at the moment, including a number of screenplays and two novels. I have a children’s fantasy novel completed and going through the beta read and editing process, as well as some exclusive artwork for the interior by Jamie Pruden, a wonderful artist and friend. It’s about two kids who have to rescue their mom from a monster-filled alternate dimension with the help of five magical gemstones. And for those with darker tastes, a new horror novel is on its way as well, set in the wonderfully macabre world of Rutherford Manor (www.rutherford-manor.com), and revolves around the early friendship of two of the central characters, Nox Flesher and Lorcan Connolly.

When evil dies, it doesn’t always stay dead.

Six outlaws, barely a day ahead of their pursuers, find shelter in a freshly deserted New Mexico town. With no water, and one of them gravely wounded, they realize too late they’re trapped inside the lifeless town.

As they soon discover the grisly truth behind the disappearance of the townsfolk, the outlaws find themselves hunted by something far worse than anything they’ve faced yet – an unspeakable evil that seemingly cannot be killed. When the malevolent creature targets them in turn, the previously tight-knit group begin unraveling past the breaking point. Thinking it to be a Strigoi Morti, a monstrosity that can only be harmed while feeding on the living, the surviving few are faced with an agonizing choice. Who will they sacrifice so the others may live?

Spine-chilling, poignant, and action-packed, Iron Dogs is an instant classic for Horror, Thriller, and Western fans everywhere.

Snapshots: A Collection of Short Stories

Snapshots by [Eliot Parker]

As the title suggests, Eliot Parker’s collection of short stories, Snapshots, is all about that moment in time, a moment where things can change forever. This collection of ten short stories focuses on a variety of characters and a variety of experiences or situations that they face which will change their future.

Eliot Parker’s descriptive writing draws you in from the very first paragraph of the first story. Well written, the stories quickly get to the heart of the situation, without making the reader feel that they are being rushed. One thing I did wonder was how the author chose the stories to include in the collection. While all the stories fit into the descriptive title of being a snapshot in time, some stories verged more towards being almost paranormal and the others focused on human behaviors. I’ve never considered who might be the last person to look into the eyes of the dead, but ‘Hands’ has left me knowing I never want to be that person! Sticking with the theme of death, ‘The Trip’ had tension but was not verging towards the paranormal, instead making you think about living life and not taking it for granted. The characters drive this collection, not the plots of each story. The author creates characters that are fully developed and relatable in such a brief space. Writing good short stories is not easy. Short stories are an art form. Eliot Parker succeeds in that art form.

Soul Seeker

Soul Seeker

Soul Seeker opens with a man on death row for the murder of his son. What seems like a heartbreaking homicide with a bleak conclusion turns into a riveting supernatural tale when the man on death row tells his lawyers the truth. A demon named Crighton killed his son. This sets the tone for a novel that is equal parts grounded and gritty with a good measure of the supernatural to keep you guessing.

What I truly enjoyed about this book was the characters. Each one is meticulously developed and evolves as the story progresses. Benjamin Poe, the dedicated father, is empathetic but strong. Crighton is the stand out character, for me, in this haunting novel. He’s Lucifer’s top soul catcher and through his introduction and story line we get to explore various ideas about morality, or the perception of morality, and the dividing line between the two. As well as how choice plays into all of it. Kaylin McFarren has done an excellent job of creating a gray area that allows your mind to wander while being absolutely thrilled by the intricate paranormal story that unfolds.

What happens when a demon and an angel fall in love? As in the beginning, I was not expecting this book to pivot to a paranormal story, and then pivot again to a romance story. Kaylin McFarren has a similar literary talent to Stephen King in her ability to introduce just the right amount of mystery into a story that keeps things eerie and the tension high. Soul Seeker is an exceptional paranormal thriller that delves into the souls of humans, demons and angels. What we uncover is surprising.

The Night And The Land

The Night and the Land is the kind of book you need to get when you come out of a massive reader’s block. The storyline is thrilling, the characters are impressive and Matt Spencer’s writing style is engaging. The author knows how to capture the reader’s interest through minute things like the description of events and details of locations. This is a story propelled forward by Sally and Rob’s characters. A unique development of characterization plays well within the confines of this gritty dark fantasy novel.

We follow the lives of Sally Wildfire and Bob among many other interesting characters. Sally’s family is not the best. They show inconsiderate at best and cruel at their worst. While running away from her family, Sally comes across a compelling young lad, Rob. Sally and Rob begin to develop a relationship that is gripping and provocative. I was fond of Rob but I liked Rob’s father even more. I was thrilled by the father’s surreptitious past and wished the author had written more about him. Reading about the characters’ families, their backgrounds and relations with each other was the most thrilling part for me in the book.

Character development is one of the best features in Mat Spencer’s writing. His style makes it easy for the reader to follow and enjoy the plot and activities the characters engage in. The supernatural elements and the horror incorporated among the themes in the book spiced up the sometimes horrific story. The transition from somewhat real life-like setting to events in dark fantasy is magical.

The Night and the Land is an enthralling dark fantasy novel, utilizing the best parts of the horror genre to explore the depths of some captivating characters.

Iron Dogs

Iron Dogs follows a group of outlaws who are wounded and on the run. They seek shelter in a deserted New Mexico town. However, they soon realize that something is seriously amiss in the town. Something evil lurks in the shadows. The band of outlaws, once the ones bringing the trouble to town, are now the ones who must fight against it. Each man is tested beyond his limits. Who, if any, will survive the evil that lurks within this desolate town.

Iron Dogs book mixes horror with action and keeps you on the edge of your seat. The story begins with Father Ramon, and immediately there are little tidbits that lead you deeper into an intricately woven story that continues to gain layers as the story progresses. The tone is set from the start, a blend of western thriller with modern horror. I could tell from the first page that the novel was setting a gritty and intense tone. The band of outlaws are close at first, but the challenges that lay ahead test their personal limits as well as the limits of their relationship when they must decide who will be sacrificed.

One of the characters, in particular, Virgil, reminded me of people I knew (in certain scenes) that had me feeling more invested. Especially as the book began to get creepier. One of the things that really thrilled me about this novel was the western feel that permeated the novel, reminiscent of George A. Romero’s gruesome and satirical horror films. Though Virgil was one of the characters who stood out the most to me, I enjoyed Frank’s character as well. As with any good book, the characters act the way they do because of inner motivations and characteristics, making the reader feel a connection to them. A word of warning Iron Dogs will pull you into the characters, but it takes a few chapters. They seem a bit shallow at first, but given time they develop into some intriguing characters.

Iron Dogs is one crazy good story. If you are a fan of riveting horror novels with plentiful action then Neil Chase has written a novel just for you.
