Grip Life

Grip Life by Elizabeth Grubbs helps readers to look within themselves and find areas that need improvement based on the seven elements of life. These seven elements are physical, mental, family, financial, vocational, social, and spiritual health. The author discusses each element by providing her experiences and her professional opinion, which is backed by science. At the end of each chapter is a biblical thought that relates to the seven elements and a checklist for readers to create a plan to better themselves in these areas.

Author Grubbs has written a mentally stimulating short read that doesn’t waste time with extra fluff. The author gets to the point, and I appreciate that she included her own experiences based on these elements as it helped make her advice believable. The author also provides research to back up her claims making this a credible read.

The seven elements listed are great points to help you become a well-rounded person as it touches upon your mental health, work, physical health, and even your social life. This is the perfect read to guide us to bettering ourselves in certain areas of our lives especially since we are all picking up the pieces from dealing with COVID. I appreciated that the author included a health self- checkup list after each element, as this allowed me to score myself in this particular area and list my thoughts on what I just read. This helped me to reflect on the information that was provided to me as well as the areas I need to improve.

I highly recommend Grip Life to everyone in different stages of their life as there is always something to improve within ourselves. The fact that this is a short read is perfect for our busy lives.

Our Church Mothers

Our Church Mothers by Gwen Ehrenborg follows seven inspiring women in the history of Christianity; Katharina Luther, the first lady of the Reformation; Susanna Wesley, the Mother of Methodism; Catherine Booth, co-founder of the Salvation Army; Mary, the Mother of Jesus; St. Clare, best friend of Francis of Assisi; Mother Teresa of Calcutta; and Judge Deborah. The author introduces the women individually and their accomplishments in the Christian practice. In addition, each woman has written letters sharing their experiences with finding their voice in the church, marriage, and having a family.

Author Gwen Ehrenborg has done her research and her knowledge shows all throughout her informative book. The author brings women from different cultures and countries together to share their experiences and show readers how they became chosen to lead others. Readers get to dive deep into these amazing women’s lives and see how they came to be. I found each one of their stories to be very compelling. We learn of their accomplishments in the church and we also get to understand the struggles and sacrifices that they have made for God; and I certainly walked away with a deeper appreciation for them. Readers also learn of their mentors, husbands, and the families they’ve built along the way.

This is an educational and inspiring book. We get to see the respect and appreciation that many people have for these women. However, depending on these women’s cultures, some of them were not seen as equals to their husbands, so they faced significant struggles regarding having a voice in the church. The author includes discussion questions at the end of the chapters; which helps readers begin deep and meaningful discussion with others on the subject.

Our Church Mothers is an illuminating and encouraging read that I recommend to those who are strong in faith or anyone looking to learn about strong women in history. Through these women, readers learn how to be selfless, care for others, and to love everyone, but most importantly readers learn to never lose sight of their faith.

For Such a Time as This

Ernest Clark is not your average author. This is evident in how he lays out his thoughts, his method of expounding on subjects, and how forthcoming he is with his takes. In his book For Such a Time as This: Let My People Go, You End-Times Doomsday Sayers!, the author shows the reader a different side of religion, as he breaks down the bible, scriptures, and God.

I enjoyed how the author reveals facts and gives readers time to digest one subject before moving to the next. This educational book primarily concentrates on biblical prophecies, holy teachings, and disproving the message of false prophets. The author draws comparisons and contrasts between ancient and modern prophets, framing his thoughts in a rational and non-biased manner. Readers will see how different 1st century Christianity is compared to today’s Christianity.

Clark guides his readers on how to interpret the word of God, and how to read, analyze, and shun false prophets and phonies that lie in the name of God. This book is eye-opening disproving the lies and myths that false prophets have peddled.

As you read the book, you will notice how genuine and open the author is. I love that Clark is consistent with his truthfulness and uses historical facts and happenings to support his concepts. One of my favorite discussions was about the end times and the tales peddled about the coming of Jesus again. Clark’s writings on eschatology and salvation were among my favorites.

For Such a Time as This: Let My People Go, You End-Times Doomsday Sayers! is an incredible book for people that have studied or want to study theology, as the author gives additional information that may not be known to contemporary theologians and Christians in general. This book is also a great read for believers and followers of Christ. The author is transparent in his message and will help you in your religious journey.

For Such a Time as This

For Such a Time as This: Let My People Go, You End-Times Doomsday Sayers! is a sacred book that discusses bible stories, prophets, contemporary Christians, the end of times, the holy scripture, and religion in general. Author Ernest Clark takes the reader on a wild ride of the teachings of Christ, religious beliefs, faith, and God. In a captivating manner, Ernest Clark expounds on various concepts and spiritual topics, Introducing unheard-of views and tales. The author is candid and forthright to the reader. This book will have you critically think about your beliefs and question some of the practices you partake in.

Not many religious books are laid out like For Such a Time as This. This book may appear peculiar to some, but there is a sense in what the author writes about. Ernest Clark gets the reader to understand the Bible differently and paints a new picture of God. The content is not for those reserved about their religious life. The author is raw, bold, talks about unorthodox topics, and is not afraid of speaking his mind. To understand where he is coming from, the author talks about his relationship with God, the times he fell short of the glory of God, and how he got back to his faith. He writes immaculately and can capture the reader’s interest with ease.

Ernest Clark made the reading experience easy as he shared his thought by talking about his life, journey in faith, and spirituality. The discussions by the author are sober and can appear radical for some staunch Christians as the author is raw. However, I like how passionate Ernest Clark is about false prophets and the end of times. Reading this book will enlighten you on the false prophets of today and help you analyze those that use prophesy to manipulate God’s people.

When discussing Doomsday, the author is armed with attributes based on his research, historical occurrences, and known beliefs. I like that the mention of Doomsday does not send a shiver down my spine when discussed by Ernest Clark. This is because the author understands the art of wording and uses phrases that readers can relate to without feeling fearful. Ernest Clark is excellent at demonstrating how faith works and debunking myths and false beliefs.

Apart from false prophets and Doomsday, other topics that I immensely enjoyed were new heaven and earth, death and resurrection, and the new testament. You feel refreshed by the end of the reading and learn dozens of religious jargon. I enjoyed reading For Such a Time as This: Let My People Go, You End-Times Doomsday Sayers! Because of how natural Ernest Clark is when writing and how articulate he is when expressing his thoughts.

I Want To Encourage Children

Kathleen J. Shields Author Interview

The First UniBear follows a cub that through acts of kindness and compassion grows a unicorn horn and spreads acts of kindness all around the forest. When you wrote your story at the age of ten what was your inspiration?

I absolutely adore Unicorns and I loved watching the Care Bears. I never understood why there weren’t unicorns in the “Land without Feelings” or why there wasn’t a bear with a unicorn horn and special magical gift. That’s how the idea came to me to combine them.

I began by wondering why no one could SEE unicorns. I determined that they DO exist, that they are rare, and we haven’t “Earned” the ability to see them. Then I began wondering what we could do to EARN the ability. Being a good person, doing good things, that was a given, but there were plenty of good people in the world that couldn’t see unicorns. So there had to be more to it. That’s when I came up with the “Pay it Forward” idea (long before that movie came out). You have to help one person, then that person has to help another person, and down the line. So by having met all of those challenges, you could have the gift… but would you know it?

As a child, I hadn’t helped save someone yet, so that made sense as to why I hadn’t grown a horn. As an adult though, editing my rhyming story – yes, I wrote it in rhyme at ten years of age, and no, I will not share that hilarious version, I realized that it may be because I hadn’t met a unicorn yet, muchless, SAVED a unicorn. I had met horses, but none of them needed saving. There were a lot of dominoes that need to be lined up just right to get to that miraculous gift.

So in my mind, I still instilled the idea that you should all do good deeds, help each other and be kind, because in that rare chance a unicorn is involved one day – I want to earn that horn!

I really loved the artwork and character renditions. You drew some of the illustrations when you were ten what was it like working with illustrator Aashay Utkarsh to turn your vision into the final artwork?

I wrote a blog post late last year entitled “My memories behind the upcoming book” https://www.kathleenjshields.com/authors/the-first-unibear-my-memories-behind-the-upcoming-childrens-book/ and in that post, I shared the original illustration I drew at 10 years of age. It really was adorable (in my own opinion) but Aashay added a level of depth, emotion, and detail that I could never fathom! Finding him was a blessing from God and it was all due to covid! During the lockdown, so many authors that I had met over the years had extra time on their hands and they all wanted to do children’s books. Since I had done so many illustrated books, they came to me.

Over the course of the year, I worked with nearly a dozen different illustrators across the globe to help illustrate their children’s books, but it wasn’t until I saw Aashay’s first page (of another author’s book) that Unibear came rushing back to my mind. I hadn’t thought of Unibear for half a decade, easy! I had lost my father nearly three years earlier. The will to even attempt it had been shelved, and yet, seeing Aashay’s first sketch ignited that spark within me! I immediately asked him if he could draw a teddy bear and a unicorn and what he sketched for me made me feel like that 10-year-old girl – all giddy and excited! I told him he HAD to do my book (as soon as he finished with the other author) and I have been utilizing his illustrations since, in many other authors’ works.

Working with him has been an absolute joy! He understands what I want, and adds a flair and thrill to his work that I haven’t seen from any of the other illustrators. I’ve started projects with a half dozen more this year alone, only to be grossly disappointed. Good illustrators that just disappear or don’t return messages. Illustrators that charge a ton and submit subpar work… maybe Aashay has spoiled me. All I know is he was a blessing and he’s definitely a keeper!

What were some themes that were important for you to explore in this book?

Originally, I just wanted to tell a story. I wanted it to be nice and magical and, as a ten-year-old girl who moved a lot, I wanted to make friends (out of a unicorn and bear of course). As an adult and author, my primary focus with all of my books is to educate and inspire. I want to encourage children to use their imagination, to do good, help others, and to believe that anything is possible. I want my stories to be fun and entertaining, and I don’t want to present major protagonists. I feel childhood is difficult enough without throwing so much ‘bad’ at them. And I wanted the story to be thought-provoking and a conversation started, which I believe it is.

I feel that 3rd, 4th and maybe even 5th graders can gain a lot from this story, especially Christian schools! Teachers could have the students point out Christian symbolism throughout the book; like the butterfly, the light leading the way, the ability to see with belief, and so much more. I even put together a document that detailed scripture along with questions of the theme which is available on my website.

What is the next book that you are working on and when will it be available?

I currently do not have an official book in the works. I have started a memoir but that has a long way to go! I also started writing a funny book about dogs, but it will be a chapter book. My illustrator for the Hamilton Troll series has come out of hiding and might want to work on the next part of the series… we’ll see. None of those are really inspiring me at the moment, and as any good author will tell you – when you force it, the readers can tell. A good story flows through you like warm chocolate cocoa on a bitter cold day. It comes to you like a frosty breeze and dares you not to shiver! When a story comes to an author, you have a very short amount of time to get as much of it written as you can because when that muse takes off, you’re left out in the cold without your cocoa. And for me… I want it to require illustrations because I want to work with Aashay again.

I am very grateful for the reception Unibear has received, all of the wonderful reviews, the awards it has already won, along with its stellar first day almost breaking the Amazon Top 100 Best Selling books in its respective categories! I honestly feel there are more awards coming up, and I have a dream of a screenplay making this inspirational and important story into a movie! Whether or not it makes it all the way is entirely up to God! Thank you for your support and don’t forget, “The First Unibear” is not only a full-color hardback book, but you can also get the full story in the black and white coloring book, for those young eyes that need a bit more activity to keep their attention.

Simple Money, Rich Life

Bob Lotich shares his story of strength, hope, and faith. Going through this book, readers will respect the author’s work and the lessons that he shares. Bob Lotich lays bare his journey with finances and, in a free-flowing manner, gives direction on how to achieve financial freedom with the resources you have.

I respect that the author does not sell a fantasy tale about money-making. Instead, shares his secrets to success and what has worked for him, giving real-life examples of people who have made it without being given a head start. The primary lesson you get from this book is that you do not have to come from money to be wealthy. Instead, money attracts those that are hungry enough for it.

Simple Money, Rich Life is the book you did not know you needed until you read it. Bob Lotich writes about finances, making money, and how the path you take affects your financial outcome and eventually your lifestyle.

In his book, Bob Lotich starts by discussing his relationship with God. The first chapter is titled ‘The Battle is His, But You Have to Show Up.’ A befitting title for the content inside the chapter. In this chapter, you learn how crucial money is in every setting, how draining having a debt can be, and its impact on your life. I love that the author introduced the religious aspect of things, as it gives readers faith and hopes to trust in God.

Reading Bob Lotich’s book gives readers a sense of realization. His relationship with God is amazing, and his perspective of life is fascinating. Lotich’s words are intriguing and inspire one to take the straight path. Throughout the book, you see the importance of religion as it has been a pillar to the author and his wife and helped him get back up. By the end of the reading, you feel fulfilled spiritually, financially, and socially.

Bob Lotich’s book will enable you to mold yourself to the best version. The author’s gentle words, courteous phrases, and valuable advice are worthwhile. The five critical pieces of advice I have taken from the book are budgeting and having a solid spending structure, debt management, your relationship with God, the significance of family, and making the best financial decisions. I like that the author extensively writes about saving and expounds on how you can save and still enjoy the good things in life. Bob Lotich is pragmatic, making his work stand out; he does not sell illusions.

Simple Money, Rich Life is a financial self-help book for those that want to approach financial security through faith and evidence-based methods. Readers will walk away from this educational book with renewed faith and a feeling that they, too, can reach a stable financial life.

The First UniBear

A brave bear cub loves to explore the forest he lives in. There are so many wonderful animals and things to see in nature. One day he follows a butterfly even into the dark part of the woods he hasn’t been into before. Continuing to follow the butterfly, he finds a clearing with shimmering light. Laying in the clearing is a horse that looks hurt, and Bear rushes over to help the horse. The horse is caught in a vine, and Bear is able to free him. He is rewarded with seeing the horse for his true self, a unicorn. Bears good deed starts a chain reaction of kindness and compassion through the woods, and soon the unicorn magic is spreading to all the animals in the forest.

The First UniBear, written by Kathleen J. Shields, started as a project when she was only ten years old. This beautifully written picturebook contains the messages of kindness, compassion, and faith. Bear’s pure heart and compassion for others allowed him to receive his horn. His good friend Bunny prayed for a chance to meet a unicorn and had faith that they existed even though she had never seen one. Once Bunny helps save a baby squirrel, she gains the ability to see a horn on Bear. Surprised, Bear and Bunny talk to Unicorn again and learn how kindness spreads and how showing compassion is contagious.

At critical moments in this story, there are references to scriptures. This is a great way to introduce the sometimes confusing concepts of scripture to young children. The whimsical rhyming style by Shields gives the story an excellent flow and makes it a joy to read aloud to children.

Complementing the touching storyline is the bold and colorful artwork of Aashay Utkarsh. The art style brings characters to life with expressive faces, and the scenery highlights the emotions that go along with the story on each page.

The First UniBear is a heartwarming picture book sharing the love of God with children and teaching them how they too can spread love and kindness to help make the world a better place.

Peace in the Midst of the Storm

Author Kaleb Thompson’s Peace in the Midst of the Storm is a poetry collection that aims to inspire others, offering sanctuary to readers going through life’s crises. This collection is based on religious beliefs and seeks to glorify God and exalt the human spirit. The writer captures the universal experiences of despair, stress, and not knowing where to turn while offering religious-based solutions to navigating these dark times in life.

These poems contain powerful and evocative images; the opening poem describes a peaceful place “my life will soon leap into.” I feel, at times, these poems would benefit from being simplified. Some lines are so long that the rhyme scheme is partially lost or muddled. Nonetheless, there is a promise of healing within these poems through moments of original phrasing and Thompson’s positive, supportive messaging. One message that stood out to me is that we are not who we were in the past, our future can be different, and we have the power to change our lives.

The poem “Blame” really struck me. The lines “A mature young man in the midst of grown adults who don’t know how / and when to grow up is not only surprising, it’s disturbing.” I see this attitude almost every day, at work, in stores, and even at children’s sports games. How can children learn to live in a Godly way when the example set before them is the exact behavior they are told to correct?

This collection is for those passionate about their religious beliefs and who have a strong faith background. The poetry is religious; there are explicit calls to prayer, alongside a sense of owing life’s successes to God. Through God, readers will find a path to overcoming anxiety, fear, a broken and troubled spirit, and an uplifting message of hope. The uplifting energy of this collection and Thompson’s attempt to reach out to the downtrodden are admirable.

Peace in the Midst of the Storm is a collection of poetry that will help guide readers into the light from the darkness that has built up inside them. This inspirational anthology will give readers hope and encouragement to find the best inside of themselves with the help of God.
