Colin the Crab Gets Married

It’s time for Colin the handyman and Clara, who works at the museum, to get married. Oh! and did I mention that they’re crabs! This is a delightful children’s story about two crabs who are madly in love and the only thing they want to do is be married to one another. The news of the wedding starts a frenzy and their dear friends’ good intentions ultimately impede on their very special day. Will Colin and Clara have the wedding they envision? Or will it be total chaos?

Colin the Crab Gets Married by Tuula Pere offers a lesson for young children to be aware of the needs of others. It offers a teaching moment to learn to respect people’s boundaries and wishes, especially when it comes to matters of personal moments in one’s life. Even as adults this is a hard lesson to follow through with. When the people in our lives mean so much to us, we want to do whatever it takes to show that love and sometimes the actions can overshadow that love.

The writing style in this charming children’s book is clear enough for a young readers and even toddlers to understand. The illustrations by Roksolana Panchyshyn are so utterly adorable that even as an adult reader I couldn’t help but enjoy and spend time looking through each scene. It was colorful, rich with life and set the tone of the story perfectly. I felt the author and illustrator had great cohesion when it came to the layout and formatting. Although this is nothing a child would notice, as a parent I appreciate it because it does truly help tell the story visually to children who may be too young to read. The words used in the book were suitable for elementary school children, but can be read out loud to younger children and wouldn’t be lost on them.

Terrific Teeth (Little Fears)

Terrific Teeth is another wonderous children’s book written by Tuula Pere and whimsically illustrated by Catty Flores. This is a story about young Emma who is in the midst of losing her first baby tooth and the scariness that comes along with it. Her family helps her through the loss of the tooth by explaining how normal and natural it is.

Tuula Pere has yet again cleverly written a book that covers an important life milestone, which is the way our bodies change as we grow up. This could be a particularly difficult and frightening time for kids. Not understanding how or why their bodies are changing. This book sheds light on some of those issues and helps children recognize that these changes are normal and should be celebrated. These types of conversations should definitely be started at a young age for kids to grasp that growing up and evolving is a good thing. This is an easy and simple story that gets the point across without making the conversation awkward and could help parents with future discussions.

This would be a great addition to any young readers library because it can help with gaining some knowledge on how our bodies change, but also to learn how to cope with them. The illustrations by Catty Flores absolutely help with the sweetness of the story and was a spot on choice for each scene that really helped immerse the reader into this tender moment in little Emma’s life.

Walter

After being neglected by a previous owner, curious and energetic Walter looks over the fence and discovers an entire world he has never seen before. Wanting so badly to experience this world, he takes matters into his own paws and jumps the fence. Walter by Sara V. Robinson is a sweet children’s book that is dedicated to the animals who have a special role in this world. This charming story follows Walter, an adorable black Labrador mix, who finds himself at an Atlanta, Georgia dog pound waiting for his forever family.

This heartfelt kids book is told through the perspective of Walter, and I felt the dialogue to be right on point with what I would imagine a dog sounding like when experiencing things or deciphering body language with humans. The book is a little sad, but the story does not go into detail about animal abuse, ensuring the story is emotionally light and approachable, and this also help keeps the focus on the point of the story. Which is that all animals deserve to be loved and live their lives to the fullest.

The images by illustrator Edixon Rodriguez matched the sweet and tender personality of Walter and helps readers connect with the story. It is an easy read, and there is a Spanish version provided as well. This can be beneficial for young children who are learning another language or for Spanish speaking people. My favorite part of this wonderful book is that it is inspired by a real story and includes a picture of the real Walter at the very end.

Walter is an emotional, illuminating and uplifting story of one dog’s journey towards love, trust and his forever home.

Empower Teachers and Parents

Ortal Green Author Interview

Think Unique introduces parents and educators to the idea of teaching creative thinking as a necessary life skill to help prepare them for the future world. Why was this an important book for you to write?

I am a Design Thinker who studied Computer Science and worked at the forefront of technology for many years. My work experience in the Hi-Tech industry is diverse. I worked for large companies such as IBM research lab, creating algorithms for future technology; I also worked for different start-ups that developed technology that disrupted the market. This knowledge and experience helped me see that with the rapid advancement in technology and the development of machine learning, artificial intelligence and automation, the type of jobs we humans perform are changing. Computers now do many tasks that we used to do in the past, and new jobs are popping up daily. Who could have imagined, ten years back, that an e-sport couch would be a profession, an uber-driver, or a social media influencer?

Looking at where our world is heading, two things were obvious to me –

We don’t know what job types will be there in 10-15 years. Therefore, many children in primary school today would work in jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

As we work alongside computers more, we must develop our superhuman skills. The skills that are unique to us and computers can’t replace. These skills, to name a few, are creative thinking, problem-solving, and an innovative mindset.

Consequently, to succeed in the 21st century (in whatever path you choose and whatever career children will decide to pursue), children today must develop their creative thinking and problem-solving skills.

As a mother of three children, I felt the need to do everything I could to set up mine and other children, from around the globe, for success.

One of the ways for me to do so is to empower teachers and parents to help their students and children develop their thinking capabilities and become excellent problem solvers.

Therefore, I wrote the book “Think Unique” to guide educators on how they can create an environment that develops these crucial skills in their classrooms.

How much research did you undertake for this book and how much time did it take to put it all together?

I wrote “Think Unique” after many years of following my passion. I have spent many years exploring, researching and learning Design Thinking, creative thinking, and problem-solving.

As part of my desire to help others develop these skills, I have worked with many adults, educators and children, teaching them Design Thinking to develop their innovative thinking and problem-solving skills.

I have spent many years in classrooms, working alongside teachers and teaching children Design Thinking. For many years, I have been training teachers on Design Thinking as a framework for teaching and learning.

These years of going on my journey and mentoring and teaching others how to develop their thinking capabilities have helped me develop a deep understanding and knowledge of this topic.

This journey led to the birth of “Think Unique”.

What is one thing about education that you think is misrepresented in the media?

There are many conversations about the need to change our education system. These types of discussions have been going on for years now. Many people talk about our outdated education system and the need for politicians and bureaucrats to re-design our education system to suit the needs of the 21st century.

While today, many agree that the current system is not serving our children, we can’t afford to wait for governments to change this system.

And there is no need to wait for policymakers to slowly change existing policies and drive a top-down transformation of this massive education system. In fact, there is no time to waste: our children need a different kind of education now.

What is misrepresented in the media is the idea that this transformation needs to happen from the top down. The idea that governments and bureaucrats are the ones who need to lead the required changes to provide our children with the learning environment they need to thrive.

In reality, re-designing and enhancing our education system can and needs to start with the teachers. Teachers have the power to bring their classrooms to the forefront of education and provide their students with the learning experience they need.

They can deliver their curriculum differently. Educators can choose to use a framework for teaching and learning that provides our children with the learning environment they need.

Teachers have this power. They have more autonomy than they think. They have more choices than they might believe. Even within the many constraints of our education system, educators have the power to teach differently.

And this is what I do. I empower teachers to amplify their impact and create an innovative classroom learning environment.

I show them how they can deliver the curriculum they need to adhere to in a meaningful and authentic way.

I guide them on how they can facilitate learning that empowers children to become excellent problem solvers and change makers.

What is one thing that you hope reader take away from Think Unique?

I wrote “Think Unique” to empower readers to become innovative problem solvers. Therefore, I hope that “Think Unique” readers will learn from my book that creative thinking is a skill anyone can develop and will follow the path I provided them to develop their innovative thinking.

Through their “Think Unique” journey, I hope they will become excellent problem solvers and help others develop their unique thinking.

As per research performed by Dr George Land and Dr Beth Jarman, we are all born creative geniuses, but most of us lose this skill as we grow up and go through our education system. However, the good news is that we can develop this skill and become creative geniuses again.

I wrote “Think Unique” in a way that empowers readers to become creative geniuses again.

Superhero’s In Their Homes

Vera Harris Author Interview

My Mom has Superpowers follows a young girl who believes her mom has superpowers; once she realizes her power is prayer, she too wants to become a superhero. What was the inspiration for your story?

The inspiration for writing this book was so many kids look for superstars (football players, rappers, singers, etc., etc.) as superhero’s and they have superhero’s in their homes. I wanted children to just look to their mom or dad or even older relatives and they will see that they can be inspired from people in their own personal lives.

The art in this book is fantastic. What was the art collaboration process like with illustrator Ishika Sharma?

My illustrator is very talented and she worked with me to bring my story to life with her awesome work. I have recommended her to other authors since our collaboration.

Are there any emotions or memories from your own life that you put into your characters?

I saw myself in the main characters because I always looked up to my own Mother because she was so awesome! And she had much faith and belief.

What is the next book that you are working on and when will it be available?

The next book that I am currently working on is a Children’s Christmas book. This will be my first Christmas book. I have a great message to share in that book. I am working for its release in a couple of months. More to follow…

Tegan Finds Her Tribe

Tegan is a charming and unique cat who has big dreams. But those dreams are dashed when she’s abandoned in the woods. She survives one terrible night and decides to take it upon herself to seek safety and a new home. What she finds instead is a band of friends that make her feel better and let her be who she is.

Tegan Finds Her Tribe is a heartwarming and uplifting children’s book that teaches young readers to persevere in the face of adversity, and that a home is really a place where people accept you for who you are, not just a place. Throughout the story Tegan is wonderfully emotive, ensuring that readers can see her emotion in every situation, which speaks to the fantastic illustrations throughout the story. Tegan’s nose looks like a little balloon and was one thing I looked forward to in every scene. This picture book is filled with beautiful watercolor art that is vibrant, has depth and reminded me of the artwork in The Lorax by Dr. Seuss.

The story starts off with Tegan being abandoned, which is hard to see, but the story then takes readers on an inspiring adventure that is filled with lots of creative and cute imagery. I loved the scene where Tegan lists all the animals she heard in the woods. They were all so cute. Tegan’s imagination is also a source of inspiration for her and provides her with the motivation she needs to keep going. I really enjoyed this idea and I think it makes this book unique because there are not many kids books that show kids how to find inspiration from within. It’s usually an external force that motivates the character. In this book, Tegan motivates herself to find something better, imagines what that could be, and then goes out to find it.

Author Melinda Booth has created an inspirational children’s book that takes young readers on poignant journey to find a place where an abandoned cat can feel like herself. This is the perfect book for parents and teachers to educate kids on acceptance and empathy and show them how to find the strength from within to overcome obstacles.

Climate and Energy Decoded – Book Trailer

Climate change, renewable energy and low carbon transition are arguably the most debated topics of the twenty-first century. Climate and Energy Decoded provides a rare, unbiased overview of these critical topics. The book also methodically debunks the related myths.

The daily glut of biased information is leading to ill-informed discussions. In this book, Dr. Tushar Choudhary, a highly awarded industry expert, focuses on both science and practical matters for his clarifying analysis. Such an analysis, which uses the most reliable data available, is essential for informed debates on energy policies. The book has over 700 references and notes.

This concise book addresses all crucial aspects about climate and energy. Climate discussions include the history of climate change, the science behind climate change and myths about climate change. Energy discussions include the history of energy, technology basics, advantages & challenges of the different low carbon technologies, and myths about fossil fuels, renewable energy and energy transition. The final big picture discussion provides a framework for efficiently addressing climate change. This section also enables the reader to distinguish between efficient and wasteful energy policies.

Apart from providing a crash course (refresher) on climate change, renewable energy, fossil fuels and low-carbon transition, the book also provides answers to the critical questions that have been widely misunderstood.

Some examples of the type of questions addressed are:
Climate change: Should we ignore the climate warnings because of the past exaggerations by media and certain scientists? Can we ignore climate impacts since death rates from climate disasters have decreased drastically? Is climate mitigation the most important issue for humans currently? What is the estimated long-term economic impact of climate change?

Renewable energy & electrification: Is electricity from solar and wind cheaper than that from fossil fuels? Can energy costs of renewables become cheaper than fossil fuels? Why are most countries lagging when some countries already generate most of their electricity from renewable sources? Why is there so much controversy about green hydrogen? Are battery electric vehicles a very effective solution? What are the key challenges related to electrification?

Fossil fuels: Do fugitive emissions negate the advantage of natural gas over coal power? Do fossil fuels receive several trillion dollars in subsidies each year? What is the impact of fossil fuels on air pollution?

Energy transition: What are the key learnings from the previous energy transitions? How much will the low-carbon energy transition cost? What are the key challenges for the low-carbon energy transition? Why is there so much unrealistic optimism about the energy transition? Is there consensus amongst energy experts about the path forward?

From The Cats’ Perspective

Phyllis Smith Author Interview

The Legend of Paisley Pete follows a house cat that is abandoned by his family, and a feral colony takes him in till they can all be rescued. What was the inspiration for your story?

This story is based on real-life events when my townhome community became overrun with stray and feral cats, like overnight. My cat whisperer neighbor and I singlehandedly trapped, neutered, delivered to the Humane Society, rehomed with trusted folks and took in for ourselves some 30 cats over the course of two summers. It was fascinating yet disappointing to watch a blue-eyed feral kitten hiss and spazz-ball if you tried to pet it. I realized after we handled so many and varied personalities of cats that it’s humankind’s fault that animals bred for domesticity should ever find cause to be wary of us. When our mission was complete, I knew I never wanted to lose the memory of it all. Well, it did fade. I couldn’t remember all the silly names we came up with or what cat ended up where or with whom. So the only thing to do was finally sit down earlier this year and capture the essence of the experience and tell it from the cats’ perspective.

What is one thing about feral cats that you think is misrepresented in the media?

That feral cats are unlovable is the notion fostered in the media or other sources of misinformation. I’ve assessed that there are 3 types of feral cats: Too old and therefore wild to socialize, possibly able to be socialized as a pet later in their life, very likely to become socialized within first 3 months of life.

Yet, there was something about my partner, the real Miss Judy from the story, who coaxed 6 too-far-gone feral cats into her home, where they never beg to go out, simply because of the sweetness of the energy surrounding her. They love to be petted. But they will likely never be cuddle buns or lap cats even for Miss Judy. Once too old, there are still boundaries they’re unable to cross, and that appears to be long periods of close bodily contact. Still, that’s them giving to us their very best.

What do you hope is one thing readers take away from your book?

Please foster and adopt stray and feral cats. At the very least, TNR (trap/neuter/release) any you find and do it kindly. Remember, you can still love too-far-gone ferals from afar by feeding them and constructing shelters for them. At the very most, endeavor to “Miss Judy” them and bring them home to bask in your love.

What is the next book that you are working on and when will it be available?

A Halloween story is in the works – actually on Kindle Vella right now – that I’ll create into a picture book, I hope in time for October 2022. On the creation horizon I see other animal stories forming in my imagination, fairies ‘n’ fireflies, unicorn quest and oodles more ideas for children, my favorite kind of people.

A trusting cat, Flynn, finds himself dumped in the woods by his owner. A friendly feral/stray cat colony takes him in and cares for him. This would not be typical cat colony behavior – Flynn in the ordinary abandonment situation would have to fight and prove himself to a colony or go his own solitary way. What, then, makes this colony willing to take him in, no questions asked? The answer is an extraordinary practice of love. Does that mean a return to faith in human beings, by the way? And what does paisley have to do with anything? Find the answer in this charming children’s picture book about the global problem of feral and stray cats.
