Demon or Angel, We Choose

B F Hess Author Interview

The Devil’s Hand follows a man playing a high-stakes card game with the Devil, who in the process, is evaluating his life and confronting his fears. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

I once heard that Herman Melville’s classic “Moby Dick” was a metaphor for England, and his and Captain Ahab was meant to reflect the King. I felt this was a good place to start. I was also inspired by the symbolism F. Scott Fitzgerald used in “The Great Gatsby.” I wanted to write a contemporary story that reflected the US’s psyche at this particular time in history. I have heard many times throughout my life that America has a schizophrenic reputation. I took an innocent boy who had the potential to do great things (America) and added the element of money, power, affluence, and greed. This gave the book its depth and made it a real challenge to write. I wanted it to have many layers so that readers can get what they want out of it. In the end, Uriel is left right where we are now, lost in an identity crisis with the hope of a better future based on better choices. The book is about one man’s self-destruction and resurrection to life and true liberty and happiness. It was my hope that I could create a book of our time, reflecting our time for all time. Only time will tell if I was successful or not.

Uriel has a dark past, and his journey is a twisted path into his psyche, revealing his deepest fears. What were some driving ideals behind your character’s development?

It was the idea that the subconscious is more in charge of your actions than the conscience. Many of the answers we seek are right inside our own heads. We lament our pain and derive our identity from it to validate our existence. Who would we be if we hadn’t suffered? Uriel is tricked into seeing the world like a psychopath, i.e., that dog-eat-dog world without a heart. He was given two paths. One by his great uncle Walt and the other by his Uncle Matt. He simply chose wrong, and his subconscious knew it. Schizophrenic dilutions can be triggered by guilt. In Uriel’s case, the dilutions came after he found out about the death of his uncle Walt. This started his spiral into hell to find the truth.

What intrigues you about the horror, especially from the psychological perspective, that led you to write this book?

Fear exists in one place and one place only – in our heads. It is the fight-or-flight impulse. To someone like me, it is a chance to pull back the curtain on our own fears and guilt to expose the underlying truth about ourselves. I didn’t start out writing a Horror book. Indeed, it was I who put it in the adult fantasy/fiction genre, but I was corrected by my publisher, Austin Macauley. Of course, you can’t write a story with Satin in it without twisting it, can you? This is how Uriel defines hell. In the end, we are the Demons and Angels we choose to be.

What is the next book that you are working on, and when will it be available?

The next book I have written and had edited is called The High Side of the Mountain. It is about a nineteen-year-old non-verbal autistic boy who is left alone on a mountain in Kentucky. He was adopted by one of the nurses at the orphanage. His caretaker dies early in the book, and he is left to the utter solitude of that mountain. Through his adventures on the mountain, he learns a new skill and how to communicate with others. His loneliness causes him to kidnap a caseworker who comes to the house. When she is found by the authorities, a misunderstanding occurs to put him in direct conflict with the law – a world he has never known. This book is about understanding and the need for family and companionship. It’s a real feelgood book with an autistic slant. I probably won’t get it published until I see an interest in my writing. If you liked my style and want to read more of it, my first book was a (YA) fantasy fiction novel entitled. The Legends of Lynquest. Give it a gander. It won the Kirkus star as well as a four-star review from Clarion. It sports lots of Dragons, Wizards, Knights, Sirens, and a creature called a Black heart. I’ve been told it is well worth the read.

Ruled by Fate

In Ruled by Fate, by Sam Withrow and Amelia Pinkis, readers delve into the tumultuous life of Brie. A harrowing car crash five years prior claimed her mother’s life and left her narrowly escaping death. The scars of that traumatic event, intensified by a haunting supernatural experience, have made Brie’s journey to healing an intricate maze. As she grapples with these memories, two anchors emerge: the comforting presence of her confidante, Sherry, and a cherished pendant, a maternal legacy symbolizing protection and a potential connection to the enigmatic guardian angel, Cameron, who once saved her.

Taking a leap of faith, Brie embarks on a fresh chapter, embracing the challenges of an ER nurse at the esteemed Daya Memorial Hospital. However, the supernatural isn’t entirely done with her. As she finds herself ensnared in a web of malevolent forces, the protective shadow of Cameron returns, reminding her that the road to normalcy might be more elusive than she thought.

The narrative fabric of Ruled by Fate masterfully intertwines biblical characters and rich mythology, offering readers a front-row seat to Brie’s trials, her evolving bond with Cameron, and her crusade against otherworldly adversaries. The chemistry between Brie and Cameron, sprinkled with lighthearted banter, infuses warmth into the story, ensuring the gravity of their mission is always in sharp focus. As much as readers are drawn into this captivating tale, a lingering enigma remains—Brie’s unique role in the supernatural saga and the profound significance of her pendant. Although hints suggest a sequel might illuminate these mysteries, I think a revelation in this installment could have heightened the intrigue further.

Ruled by Fate is a brilliantly crafted debut to the “Forbidden Tears” series. Withrow and Pinkis weave a narrative that promises suspense, romance, and a tantalizing supernatural allure. Readers will be eager for the next chapter in Brie and Cameron’s mesmerizing journey.

Hess’s keen attention to detail immerses readers in a realm where the multifaceted intricacies of the human mind take center stage. This exploration of mental constructs and the labyrinthine nature of the human psyche doesn’t just propel the plot forward but also presents a mystery deeply rooted in the emotional conundrums that many of us grapple with daily.

One of the standout elements of the tale is how Uriel’s quest to reconcile with his history resonates as a symbolic reflection of the internal conflicts many encounter. Futility of Defense

In the wake of the epic battle at Swamp Hold, Krell and his allies find themselves in a world where heroism has earned them accolades, but the tide of conflict is far from receding. As the designated paladin of ReckNor, Krell’s mettle is truly tested by the menacing sea creatures and the intricate dance of politics and alliances. Bryan Cole’s Futility of Defense masterfully weaves a tapestry rich in character and color, offering readers a glimpse into the harrowing battles against fearsome beasts while delving deep into the protagonist’s interactions with friends and adversaries.

Cole’s vivid depictions of combat are nothing short of mesmerizing. Imagine being entrenched in battle, surrounded by monsters, all the while strategizing to unveil the greater powers at play. Fans of the fantasy genre will find themselves entranced by the myriad of magical and supernatural elements skillfully interwoven into the narrative. This book is a veritable treasure trove of fantastical wonders, from teleportation to gods, prophecies, and dragons.

A particularly riveting subplot is the novel’s foray into the realm of politics. Krell’s interactions, especially his charged exchange with a Watford magister concerned about the use of magic, add layers of depth to an already multifaceted story.

While I enjoyed the book, I felt that sometimes the dialogue can feel protracted, while certain characters, such as Cullen, the human navigator of ReckNor’s Bounty, seem underutilized, making sections of the narrative feel less engaging.

Futility of Defense stands out due to Cole’s adept intertwining of action, fantasy, and a hint of romance. The intricate political landscape further heightens the novel’s allure. It’s a compelling read, boasting a blend of strengths that make it nearly impeccable and an absolute delight for diverse reasons.

Affinities

In Affinities, readers are immediately captivated as our lead character, Andrew Goodwin, awakens from the aftermath of a devastating car crash. The distressing signs that follow—nightly sweat-soaked awakenings and a puzzling amnesia about recent events—hint at a narrative that transcends simple post-traumatic stress. Mysterious whispers, unsettling blood markings, and unaccounted-for bruises on Andrew’s skin craft an eerie tableau of a reality that’s darker and more perplexing.

The book’s initial chapter, though complex, soon finds its pace, ensnaring both its characters and readers into its intricate mystery. It’s a rare experience to find a narrative that elicits such a visceral response. With each unpredictable plot twist, I felt an uncanny connection to the story, as though I was experiencing Andrew’s turbulent psyche firsthand. Thompson showcases his ability to craft a clever narrative, spinning a tale rich in suspense and riddled with intrigue. It was only with the introduction of subtle supernatural elements that I found a moment’s respite to put the book down.

Affinities is more than just a story; it’s a journey. In a world of routine and responsibilities, it offers a thrilling departure into the depths of fear and the human mind. For fans of psychological horror and crime thrillers, this book is a must-read. My anticipation is already piqued for its sequel, Outshine: Lifecycle 2.

Resist And Survive

Stephen Wayne Author Interview

Steve the Zombie follows a seasoned detective infected with the undead plague who is trying to find a cure before he loses what is left of his humanity. What was the inspiration for the setup of your story?

Whenever I’ve read or watched a horror movie, I have always seen one perspective: the survivor’s perspective, their struggle, their will to survive. Then, once I watched a zombie horror movie where the unfortunate person who turned into a zombie had a past, a life, and a family, and was killed just because they turned into something they never wanted to be. This got me thinking: What happens if these people inside still retain some of their humanity? What if they can’t communicate it? In my opinion, good horror is when the main character is helpless, seemingly with no way out, so you have to root for the hero. And what could be more frightening than being surrounded by monsters, bound by something you can’t control, essentially helpless, and then the hero realizes they’ve become the monster too. This is how Steve the Zombie was developed – exploring what happens when someone realizes they’re no longer in control of their body, but still conscious, surrounded by monsters. As they roam with them, they become one of them. Deep within, while everyone wants to hunt them down, the hero tries to resist and survive. Getting into his perspective invokes the greatest fear, where horror isn’t just around the hero, but within the hero – the battlefield isn’t just the streets or the surroundings, but his own body as well.

Steve is not your typical zombie; rather, he holds on to his humanity and determination to save others. What were some driving ideals behind your character’s development?

To draw the line between good and bad, between human and monster, I needed to keep Steve’s core ideals from his former detective self, to set him apart from the monster he ultimately becomes. While he is aware he is a zombie, he must hold strong to his humanity, to not become the true monster everyone fears and that he also despises and fears. One of the core ideals was to present that even if someone appears monstrous on the outside, they can still be a hero, a good person on the inside. In the book, as seen in a few scenes, those who appear human are often more monstrous and cruel than the hero zombie himself.

What intrigues you about the horror and paranormal genres that led you to write this book?

I have always been drawn to the paranormal, the unexplainable. I’m only afraid of a handful of things, but I love to experience fear, like many others. I strive to find ways to scare even myself, which is likely why I write horror – to create scenarios that would frighten me too. Interestingly, my love for horror might have been influenced by my mother watching Alien in a theater while pregnant with me. Needless to say, the Alien franchise is a favorite of mine, with the second installment, Aliens, being my favorite movie. The blend of horror and action in that film resonates deeply with me. One of my other favorite scary movies is Screamers, notable for its isolation, where the heroes also have to confront the unsettling realization that anyone can turn into a terrifying evil monster.

Regarding the paranormal, as a child, I received a book filled with unexplainable mysteries, and I’ve always been captivated by the idea that there are things no one can rationalize, like the Bermuda Triangle or UFOs. Then came The X-Files, which brought visuals to many similar stories I had read and imagined. Horror and the paranormal are two intertwined genres for me, both dealing with the unattainable and often unexplainable. I have a passion for mysteries and constantly seek ways to uncover the enigmatic.

What is the next book that you are working on, and when will it be available?

My next book will be another monster story, but this time set in the Roman Empire. It follows a brave Praetorian Centurion tasked with discovering the true reason behind a madness that has befallen many emperors. The project’s working title is I, Praetorian, and I hope to have it completed this year.
